One of the most simple, meaningful, and uncomplicated love songs ever written.
    Unconditional love.
I was lucky enough to have experienced that for 50 years and to return it in kind....and even now that he has passed away, I still love him in every moment just the way he is and wouldn't change a thing.
I wish everyone could have that experience.
    Billy says it perfectly.
    I love you Bob.💞

Phil Ramone and Liberty DeVitto recommended the change. DeVitto hated playing it until the rhythm was changed.
Even after the change, Joel didn’t want it on the album. Ramone recruited Carole King and Phoebe Snow to convince Billy to embrace the song and agree to put it on the record.
Can you imagine this song never being released?

Actually Mr. Joel predates the Disco era by several years. Disco was actually short lived, generally from '75 to about '80 (yes, there were some songs after '80 that had a disco vibe, but they were the exception. The mid '80s was the "Hair Band" era mostly). I remember in the early '80s certain radio stations were having disco record smashing events. Disco never really went away, they just call it "club" music now. It's what all the "hot" girls wearing 2 pounds of makeup and too small dresses get on the floor and wiggle to.

Love Billy and his legendary songs! This bossa-nova inspired beauty is one of his best. And with the incredible Richie Canata on sax? Well... it's a gem. If you haven't already, you should definitely watch (from this same concert) "New York State of Mind." Wow - what a performance. Then follow that up with his older live performance of "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" for dessert.

  • @DanielOrme
    @DanielOrme 19 дней назад

On most Billy Joel songs when you hear a saxophone it's being played by Richie Cannata, who was part of his band from 1975 to 1981. On the album for this song alone it's played by Phil Woods, but since this is a live performance, I guess that's Cannata playing here, too.

It’s more of a romantic song than it is a PDC type song. Let’s call it 75/25 romantic to PDC but that’s an awesome thing to be. I remember reading an interview with Paul Simon back in the 80’s in which he both complimented and criticized Billy at the same time. He basically said that Joel is so versatile and such a good mimic that he sometimes has trouble being himself. Billy could be Harry Chapin on one song then sound similar to Elvis. After that he may be Paul McCartney and then Ray Charles. While I see Simon’s point I think that in all these things we find Billy Joel.

I grew up with Billy Joel. At 74 he can still sell out 20,000 seat Madison Square Garden for his 100th concert in that location. Not to mention that he wrote every one of his songs on every one of his albums including 11 platinum. One or two were 10 times platinum. The premier songwriter of the 20th century.

That was a perfect induction speech 😄 I agree with you, as big of a Billy Joel fan as I am, I don't necessarily think of any of his songs as panty droppers, however he can be incredibly ROMANTIC. Just making your heart and eyelashes flutter as you heave a big sigh. Which is why it pleased me to hear you use the word "woo" since that is exactly what he's doing, the old fashioned way with words and charm. The saxophone, on the other hand, well, yes, of course that's an immediate underwear extractor. 😅 I would like to suggest Until the Night as another slow-burn romantic song (with SAX), it's his homage to the Righteous Brothers.

It's not "you're perfect the way your mother birthed you", it's "I love you, the way you are, no matter what" unconditional love. Like your mother loves you, no conditions, no strings, no need to change anything about you because I love you. If your hair is brown, blond, pink or purple, it doesn't matter, because I love you and it's your hair. "Woman, you don't have to change anything to get my love. You've had it from the start because I love you, not your hair, not your clothes, not your makeup, just you, anyway you are." This is the way a real man loves his woman. He can't help it because he's a real man and not some overgrown boy.

Just finished binge-watching your George Carlin reactions and thought they were some of the best I'd seen. That's me subscribed.
I'm not sure how I feel about Billy Joel. The album version of this song is sublime - especially when compared to the sugary Barry White cover that made the UK charts - but I didn't care for the direction his material took in the 80s.
I don't know if as a straight cis male I'm qualified to comment on the PDC concept, or even if it's appropriate for me to do so, but I'll stick my neck out and recommend the Split Enz number Message To My Girl followed by Todd Rundgren's Hello It's Me.

IMHO this is Billys best vocal performance and it helped end the cold war a must see so different In the summer of 1987, Billy Joel accepted the Kremlin’s invitation to the U.S.S.R. for six fully-staged rock shows in Moscow and Leningrad, fulfilling a longtime desire to perform in Russia and permanently affecting the spirit of the country ahead of the Soviet Union’s dissolution in 1991. Written by Billy Joel. I agree👍 He said it sounds similar to U'm Not in Love as popularized by 10cc, which they also produced, in 1975 because of the keyboards of Joel and tape loop which the late Phil Ramone recorded on while he produced the music 🎶.
In the same city, Waiting for a Girl 👧 Like You was recorded in 1981 by Foreigner. Three years later, (40 years 🎂 ago) The Cars recorded Drive 🚗. These 2 songs had Mutt Lange as the main producer.

I have been a HUGE Billy Joel fan my whole life and I feel the same way, he doesn't have that PDC vibe, perhaps because Billy's lyrics are complicated and thought provoking so his songs get me in more of a cerebral place, not a physical place. Even his songs sung about women and directly to women are more love or relationship songs, and you don't get that "I'm sexy and and I know it" vibe, he's very humble. However I'd say the closest to the Hall and Oates vibe he can be are "She's Got a Way", which can get you in your feels, and "Leave a Tender Moment Alone" (live, because he can sing it so sexy)

This is such a beautiful song! I think if you give "For The Longest Time" a listen, he'll be inducted.

So I think you should definitely check out his song Lullabye (Good Night My Angel) you will probably end up singing it to your baby or at least playing it for them to sleep. Billy's best vocal track where he does the most is called "Leave A Tender Moment Alone" you should check that out as well. Honestly you should just do his entire catalog there are honestly only a handful of bad tracks throughout his entire career.

While we're on the PDC topic, I must suggest Stevie Ray Vaughan "Little Wing".
Now this is totally instrumental, so I dont know if you would review it on YT, but on a scale of 1 to 10 on the PDC this is an 11!!
If you get a chance please respond and let me know if you agree!

For the best hit of sax try Christie Lee from the Innocent Man album, not quite a ballad mind you!
