I’m half Japanese and half white. All my life I was too Asian for my American family but too white for my Japanese family. Thank you for speaking up about your experience! It’s so good to know you’re not alone!
I am half Filipino and half finish and I went to a school in Australia and all they saw was Asian , they called me Ching Chong China girl I used to cry. Now people ask and they are intrigued and I love it there’s not many mixed people and I love being different it’s my point of difference. Mixed represent always is a huge cultural blessing !
I’m half Filipino and half white and the Filipinos I’d meet (not my family) would look at me skeptical of my heritage claims. In my white school district they assume I didn’t speak English at home. Being different builds character for sure and empathy teaching you how you can’t assume anything about someone
she really does have a beautiful speaking voice and a gift for talking to the camera as if it's her best friend, i feel like i'm in the room interviewing her.
I love hearing fellow mixed girls talk about their experiences with identity. I relate so much to each of you even if we're completely different. I am half Indonesian half white, but I look entirely white and grew up in a predominantly white country - but I've never _felt white_ but I'm also _not_ accepted by the Asian community entirely as "one of us".
I know sooo many people that are mixed Indonesia and dutch! My best friends mother is also mixed Indonesia and shes been like a second mother to me! She even taught me to make sambal! She's told me some wonderful stories about growing up in Indonesia. Being mixed can definitely have advantages like having way more types of delicious food to choose from in the family.
I’m Native American + White… There’s not such a thing as “feeling ***write one race***”! We are what we are. I’m seeing many fellow White ppl (but mixed) low-key not accepting their White roots and that’s sad. There’s a lot but as a girl born in America (by America I mean the continent bc I’m from Brazil) I guess these fellow White mixed ppl don’t rly get to know a lot about their actual cultures but more about what America “transformed” into White culture (which I discovered to be not even 20% of the actual European culture, depending on your European country of origin)! I kinda get your point but pls don’t feel less Southeast Asian just bc you’re White and don’t feel less White just bc you’re Southeast Asian! These are “the treats” of being a biracial kid. :)
I just wanted to say how very thankful I am for your videos. I found you when I was pregnant and my son is two and so, so many of your videos helped me - from sleep training, to toys, to pregnancy and newborn tips. I really really appreciate all the work you put into this channel
I love to hear you talk about growing up as a mixed kid. It's difficult, indeed, but it's also such a wonderful thing. My kid is half Norwegian, half Ecuadorian, and trilingual. I feel that a pluricultural life is one of the best gifts we've given him.
I definitely agree! My husbands is mixed Chinese, Surinames, Dutch and I'm American but we live in the Netherlands so we have lots of cultural things that celebrate! And lots of delicious food!
I had the same experience being mixed race. I really loved hearing your experience. You never fit in but when you get older you learn that society cannot define you. You are all your ethnicities.
It's really cool to learn from your experience because my daughter is mixed white and Vietnamese. I want her to feel included in both sides of her family and learn Vietnamese so she can communicate really easily with that side of her family.
I watched your video with Dr.V and thought you are so beautiful but listening to your story and hearing you were poor, bullied, and suicidal; you NEVER know what a person has been through to get to where they are! Thank you for sharing your ❤
Awww my heart was breaking at 7:39 when Susan was talking about her Dad and trying so hard not to tear up. Thank you for this Susan! You speak so eloquently! ❤️
10 minutes in and I was tearing up. People can experience different things, but the emotions and feelings we go through can be so similar. Thanks for being open and sharing this video with us!
but it is also true that you become more proud about your heritage as you grow older! Being mixed becomes almost an advantage in so many ways. Aaaaaaaand... mixed people are stunning :D
Susan, the more I get to know you on your various platforms the more I relate to you, the more I respect you & genuinely care about you. You have a quietly dignified strength & it resonates. I hope that didn't come- off weird.
I love the story about your mom and getting yourself out of poverty. My family was definitely low income growing up and I was embarrassed but as an adult, I am humbled and I’m gritty. It’s because i didn’t grow up wealthy, I appreciate more. I became a nurse and work hard to ensure my mom doesn’t have to worry about money.
Had to pause this before I forget. I’m obsessed with learning things about ethnicity and race (maybe because of my own roots). And while I find your mixed genetic makeup and background to be hella interesting, I’m most interested in your maiden name. It’s so fascinating. I’m not sure what all you know about your Mexican side, but Mexico (and all of Latin Am) has had a vast array of immigrants from various backgrounds. I sorta researched it, and even though it’s fairly spread out, your last name is of Arabic/Middle Eastern origin, for the most part. We all know most of Spain (except parts of the north) was conquered and ruled by Muslims (Arabic muslims were the ruling minority while most of their troops were North African Berber with some Greek and Eastern Euro thrown in). Well when the Christians (let’s just say it: white) took back their land, most people think the Muslims either stayed or were expelled to North Africa or the Middle East. And while a very tiny % were allowed to stay (mostly native Iberian/formerly Christian Muslims who converted back) and a lot were indeed expelled to NA and the ME, a fair amount were sent to the Americas as slaves/indentured servants/etc. Maybe this was the case with a paternal ancestor. I’ve had my own genetic ancestry testing done, and I found it hella interesting. It would be cool to see your results if you ever were to do one and wanted to share!
I have done a lot of research into my family history and name. It’s such a loooong and interesting story, but the short of it is that my father’s ancestors were definitely from Spain and some were Sephardic Jews. We also have indigenous ancestry, which makes sense because the Spaniards made their way to the area that is now New Mexico. My family has been there for centuries and I think there is so much more to discover!
I have a cousin who looks like her and she's 100% Mexican. She has no recent Asian ancestry. That side of the family we're assuming is a lot more indigenous and they have some Asian features since that's where indigenous people came from thousands of years ago. She is constantly mistaken for being Asian.
@@karinr5168 That's true, there's also black and white Mexicans too but I don't think she has any recent Asian ancestry. It's all from the indigenous side just like many Native Americans from the U.S. also look Asian.
Being mixed (black and Vietnamese) I felt the same way. I feel like you couldn’t fit in with certain groups. Being mixed is it’s own struggle and many people don’t know. Seeing the future generations grow up, I’m excited to see the diversity and am obsessed with being mixed as well. I feel like people love it now
That was a great video! Thank you, I myself am not mixed but I‘m adopted from India and grew up in a predominantly white community and therefore had similar experiences
Thank you for opening up and sharing this life info with us Susan :) I think your life advice is spot on. Tough times when you're younger end up being molehills when you're reflect on them. Also, for what it's worth, I think you're a fantastic mum. Parenthood isn't a one size fits all kind of thing. You parent in a way that works for you and Arun. That's the best thing for kids!
Thank you Susan for sharing parts of your personal life and growing up. I know many people who are mixed can relate to this. I'm a teacher and bullying at school and racisim happens everyday and has a huge impact on a child's wellbeing. It really hurts me to see teachers, especially white teachers who feel like they don't have to address BLM because of their own discomfort. BIPOC kids already have it hard enough being accepted and we know school causes alot of hardship. I know uoir life experiences will certainly be there for when your children navigate the school system. Lots of love from Vancouver, 🇨🇦!!!
I’m half Mexican, but didn’t have my dad around growing up. I was very much in touch with my Thai half, but when I got older and decided I wanted to embrace my Latina side I got the same thing from people, always made me feel like I wasn’t “mexican enough”
I love this video Susan, it is so cool learning about your interests, it really put a smile on my face, like when you said what you wanted to be growing up. I really like this kind of videos. Because people create this image in their mind of what someone is like (especially youtubers) and then you learn personal things about them and your perception of them changes. Really loved this video, big thumbs up!❤️❤️❤️ Edit: What is also inspirational to me is people who, like yourself, build a life for themselves from scratch. I also live in a small town and I am very ambitious, but it seems like I will never get where I want to go because I don't have the opportunities here, I don't know the right people, and as of this year, I can not even go where the opportunities are. It is so frustrating and it also gives me literal anxiety. Listening to your personal story gives me hope and motivation that I will be able to do the same with my life (also we share the same birthday, so here's to hoping that being a Leo also plays a role hahahaha).
BlueColeman, I know we’re all feeling "stuck" right now (temp. circumstances) but try to look at this time as an opportunity to plan. Bullet journal perhaps? Any type of planner/notebook- use this to plan. Start small-things you can accomplish daily and then mark it off. Then onto bigger things. And even bigger! You will be ready to fly in no time! Once we get the green light anyway. Best of luck to- you’re going to be great!
@@MarissaRenee211 First of all thank you for taking the time to write this to me, you are a very kind person. I really like your idea, I have many things planned and I need to organize everything and writing them down and having the visual aid might help me out to be honest. So thank you for you suggestion, your reply made me smile and gave me a little bit of peace of mind. I also wish you the best of luck, and know that people like you are what's good in this world. I hope only good things come your way.
I also love that my children will have multiple cultures and race to identify with. They will be both Filipino and Black! They get to experience a unique Asian and Black experience.
I found your channel when I was having a daughter. I had no idea your were mixed. I’m black/Korean and my wife is Mexican and my daughter is way cuter than either of us lol. I think an advantage you and I have is that we can prepare our children to embrace their identity.
I feel you so much on not fully belonging to either of your cultures - I'm half Chinese and half English, born in Canada. When I go to the Chinese malls, they look at me like I'm not quite right, and to Caucasians I look obviously Asian. My family and close friends accept me as I am, but when I'm traveling or people don't know me, I feel like people make assumptions about me. Even when I was visiting in China, I wasn't 'Asian' enough, and then when I'm in any English speaking/western countries, they expect me to speak Cantonese or Mandarin...they even seem surprised that I'm fluent in French.😂 I still have a hard time coming to terms with how my identify comes across to people, but I also try to believe that my personality and true self shine through when you get to know me. Thanks for opening up about this, Susan❤️
Great video. I feel like your personality shines in this video and I love seeing a playful side of you. ❤️ I actually had no idea children got bullied about being mixed but I'm happy for being made aware now.
Susan, I love watching your channel! I was surprised to find out you were from NM. FYI, Yara is an old New Mexican name. Most New Mexican families came to the area in the 1500s. My family is an old NM as well. I was always told we are Spanish, not Mexican. I have done my genealogy and many hours of research, that is 100% correct. If you have any questions about NM genealogy, let me know!
I find it interesting that our generation who are mixed all seemed to go through this. It’s interesting to see now, there are so many mixed kids, specially in Los Angeles.
Right now I’m in the phase where i feel like I’ll never get out of the rut I’m in. And i feel like i won’t get out of it. Thank you for your words ... i hope one day i can do better and be better and look back on it and laugh.
I'm half Taiwanese and half Peruvian (of Arab, white, indigenous descent) and relate so much! I look more like my mom (Asian) so unfortunately most people don't really see me as mixed, and so I feel even more isolated because how I feel differs from what others see me as.
I can totally relate to your story. My mom is from Mexico and my dad was American of British descent. I look Hispanic but my last name is an English surname. And I don’t speak Spanish that well. Do you ? P.S. I think you are so beautiful!
I loved this- I admire you so much and I am so happy to know more about you! I want to know more about you and your husband as far as when you met him, what stage of your business were you in and how did you guys navigate that time of your life when you were not "blowing up" lol but you still knew you wanted to go down this path. Thank you!!!
2:46 here in Brazil one of the most well know personalities is also “Wasian”… Her name is Sabrina Sato! Her dad is Swiss-Lebanese and her mom is Korean. I’m Brazilian too and I’m Native American-White!! So… As a Latin girl I’m pretty glad you explained that Latin American ain’t a race… It’s basically like saying that Anglo American is a race (and I swear I met Anglo American ppl who didn’t even know the meaning of being Anglo American, but still thought they know plenty of things about what is a Latin American person lol) or that Gisele Bündchen and Cardi B (I mean both Latin women) are ladies with the same race (even though actually one is White, the other is Black and that’s pretty much it)!!
Thank you for sharing your mental health struggles. It's nice to see someone who I look up to thriving and overcoming these mental struggles. To someone who has anxiety and depression (not to worry, I'm working with a doctor), do you have any advice?
I know exactly how you felt I grew up being told I’m not Brazilian enough or Dominican enough. To my Brazilian friends I was the Dominican friend snd my Dominican friends would just label me as the Brazilian n it was really hard
i LOVEEEEEE heidi gibson! 😍 i hope to have one of her rings when i get married one day. it’s so funny, when i first saw your ring i thought it looked like one of her designs 😌💕
I totally feel you on being denied your ethnicities. I'm Chinese/Cuban & Nicaraguan - both sides of the family didn't really get that I was still part of them and their culture. My husband is Korean so our daughter is very mixed, but looks more Asian. Sometimes I worry that she will also not be accepted by the mixed cultures.
I related to this so much! I’m half white and half Japanese. I look more white though but people don’t see me as asian. Even though I feel very connected to my culture. Also once some people found out I was half Asian... people would make fun of me for being Asian. Never felt like I fully fit in.
Hi! I found your channel a little over a month ago. I love it. And today I found out you are 1/2 latina like meeeee!!!!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼 i don’t know how I didn’t picked it up before. Let me tell you, I ordered 600$ worth of products on the Sephora sale following exactly your recommendations for oily / acne prone skin. Thank you for the advise. Arriba los latinos 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
The biracial thing about not being accepted on Both sides because of your appearance is SO TRUE. I went trough the same thing. I don’t look Korean enough and people are shocked to hear that I’m half black
I am racially just white but I was born and grew up in Bolivia where I still live and am raising my family. I am American and Bolivian and it's sometimes hard that my cultural heart is not reflected in my appearance. My children are white & hispanic and I feel that maybe it will be easier for people to understand them as their different cultures/languages/experiences will be reflected in their faces. Multicultural people who are not multiracial often feel othered too. I struggle with the fact that I will never be accepted or perceived as Bolivian when I am a passionate citizen. I can't speak to being half Korean and half Mexican or any other such pairing, but I feel like I've had a similar, if less visible experience. ❤️🇧🇴🦙
Another halfie chiming in about feeling lost about my identity! (South East Asian/European) I thought I had gotten over my identity crisis until I recently realised that my (white) father sees me as a white woman. It's tough having that erasure from even your own close family
I'm half Thai, half Belgian… On both sides people say I'm from the other side ^^" It doesn't bother me much, but it makes it hard to answer when people ask where I'm from, because I grew up in a bit Hong Kong, a bit in Thailand and mostly France 😬
I am an archaeologist! I was terrified that I would hate my first dig (after a four year college degree). Luckily I loved it! But I am severely allergic to pretty much all of the outdoors. 😂
Archaeology is fascinating! As a kid my grandparents organised geological digs via a local museum and it was fantastic! As an adult I've been to soooo many archaeological sites like castles, prehistoric mound graves, native American cliff ruins. It's definitely a professional i considered but i didn't have the grades unfortunately. I hope you have a long and interesting career!
I so enjoyed watching this. Thank you for sharing parts of your life with us. My schedule is similar as far as working mom schedule. We do what we can. I’d also like to recommend The Secret Slob on yt, she makes keeping up the house pretty doable.
Aww I loved your story about learning that you didn’t want to be an archeologist! It’s great that your parents let you explore that avenue so you could see for yourself If you liked it. I’m all for parents who let their kids make their own decisions ☺️
I am 1/2 Filipino & 1/2 White and look Hispanic. LOL My husband is Puerto Rican. My kids love being a mixed race. They both say they have the best of both worlds.
On mother’s side Italian , Filipina/Spanish (let’s face it they conquered us all) & fathers side I’m afro Cuban. So I’m definitely all over the place in identity crisis. However I’m trilingual and working on Italian atm. No te preocupes, todas las latinas somos iguales, mi padre tiene un dicho “dios puso a todos los latinos en una mano y los aventó al mundo, donde cayeron es la diferencia de el dialecto en que hablan, costumbres, y dieta. Pero la sangre no cambia” so if you’re Latin, you’re Latin by blood, no one can deny that. Envy is what makes people criticize you.
I’m half Japanese and half white. All my life I was too Asian for my American family but too white for my Japanese family. Thank you for speaking up about your experience! It’s so good to know you’re not alone!
Same here! Also a hapa!
I asked my son a haafu if he had any issues growing up and he said no. We respected both cultures equally and maybe that did it ka shira?

Susan is basically my mom at this point. I'm Indian so this works out too lmaooo
Haha! I welcome you with open arms. 🥰
I actually had no idea children got bullied about being mixed but I'm happy for being made aware now.
Who else would like Susan to do a video in spanish? I really think that would be a good idea :)
I can totally relate to your story. My mom is from Mexico and my dad was American of British descent. I look Hispanic but my last name is an English surname. And I don’t speak Spanish that well. Do you ? P.S. I think you are so beautiful!
Love this AMA format! Can't wait to watch the rest!
I loved this- I admire you so much and I am so happy to know more about you! I want to know more about you and your husband as far as when you met him, what stage of your business were you in and how did you guys navigate that time of your life when you were not "blowing up" lol but you still knew you wanted to go down this path. Thank you!!!
Love these videos of getting to know you, skincare queen! Thanks for uploading such an honest and fun video! 💕
I really wanted to be a archeologist as a kid too! I was obsessed with dinosaurs and all the old egyptian history!
Thank you for sharing your experiences, Susan! Being mixed can be strangely isolating
From a fellow small town New Mexican, I enjoyed this so much!
Can you do a makeup tutorial?! I always love your dusty pink lipstick look!
Omg you’re kids are so lucky… They’re American-Mexican-Korean-Indian???? Damn 😍
God blesses these beauties ♥️🙏🏼🙏🏼
Just discovered your channel and now I’m hooked! ☺️
Your advice is soo amazing for young people! I wish I had a role model like you when I was younger.
Thank you for sharing your mental health struggles. It's nice to see someone who I look up to thriving and overcoming these mental struggles. To someone who has anxiety and depression (not to worry, I'm working with a doctor), do you have any advice?
My husband and I met with Heidi Gibson at a Starbucks in Long Beach in 2015 to design my engagement ring. Love her designs!
You are such an interesting, smart, and insightful person. This was such a delight to watch.
Loving your authenticity! Honestly sounds like we're casually chatting on your couch.
I know exactly how you felt I grew up being told I’m not Brazilian enough or Dominican enough. To my Brazilian friends I was the Dominican friend snd my Dominican friends would just label me as the Brazilian n it was really hard
Loved this! You’re so beautiful, inside and out ❤️
Thank you Susan- this was exactly the pep talk I needed ❤️
This was lots of fun! Gave me some good laughs. Great to see this casual side and get to know you better. 👍🏻
i LOVEEEEEE heidi gibson!
This was so chatty, I loved listening to you ☺️
I related to this so much! I’m half white and half Japanese. I look more white though but people don’t see me as asian. Even though I feel very connected to my culture. Also once some people found out I was half Asian... people would make fun of me for being Asian. Never felt like I fully fit in.
Christina Bowen I am the gaijin no Okaasan and I will see you as you choose to be seen. My musuko wa haafu desu.
I love this! Thank you ❤️ Now I get why you have such amazing skin and hair.
I'm half Cuban, quarter Greek and a quarter English and boy did I relate to not knowing your identity. I still struggle from time to time.
I got so exited when I read “ my necklace” lol
I’m mixed, half chinese and half malay and i identify with you.. Identity crisis is real.
South Indians love jewellery 🤩🤩
Unmai unmai🤣
Susan answered my question and my name was listed in her video! Yay! Thank you Susan! 😆
I love your sincerity
Mexican and Korean is a gorgeous mix!
Another halfie chiming in about feeling lost about my identity! (South East Asian/European) I thought I had gotten over my identity crisis until I recently realised that my (white) father sees me as a white woman. It's tough having that erasure from even your own close family
Please share more food related vlogs or content. Would love to see your perspective.
Your awesome, so true to us as viewers and yo yourself. Thank you truely!!
I'm half Thai, half Belgian… On both sides people say I'm from the other side ^^" It doesn't bother me much, but it makes it hard to answer when people ask where I'm from, because I grew up in a bit Hong Kong, a bit in Thailand and mostly France 😬
I flashed a boy in kindergarten, also in San Antonio, Texas!!!😂😂😂💜💗💜
I am an archaeologist! I was terrified that I would hate my first dig (after a four year college degree). Luckily I loved it! But I am severely allergic to pretty much all of the outdoors. 😂
Archaeology is fascinating! As a kid my grandparents organised geological digs via a local museum and it was fantastic! As an adult I've been to soooo many archaeological sites like castles, prehistoric mound graves, native American cliff ruins. It's definitely a professional i considered but i didn't have the grades unfortunately. I hope you have a long and interesting career!
susan you look amazing, almost glowing... I wonder why :)
It was lovely to know you 😍
Love the story ur amazing love u 😍 so many insights wow
I so enjoyed watching this. Thank you for sharing parts of your life with us. My schedule is similar as far as working mom schedule. We do what we can.
I’d also like to recommend The Secret Slob on yt, she makes keeping up the house pretty doable.
Aww I loved your story about learning that you didn’t want to be an archeologist! It’s great that your parents let you explore that avenue so you could see for yourself If you liked it. I’m all for parents who let their kids make their own decisions ☺️
❤️ Susan is my inner voice.
I am 1/2 Filipino & 1/2 White and look Hispanic. LOL My husband is Puerto Rican. My kids love being a mixed race. They both say they have the best of both worlds.
You are amazing girl ! 🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼 don’t let these bitter people get to you 💛 (IG post convo)
