  • @cyberjujo4413
    @cyberjujo4413 2 года назад +4

    Basenji are very smart dogs, but can be stubborn! Train him ASAP and do it every day so they understand. Few tips: 1) one word for each command, use words that sound very different phonetically. 2) your life will be much much easier if you train him to come on demand, very important esp w life on the road and camping. Use bacon or steak to associate “COME”, bacon esp has a very strong smell. Nothing worse than having to chase your dog around. Always reward the “come” and never scold after the “come”. I a distinct whistle with my German Shepard, and now u don’t need treats, she comes immediately. If you hike consider a gps collar to let him run free, but test him out in controlled areas to see if he’s a runner. Beautiful dog!

    • @cyberjujo4413
      @cyberjujo4413 2 года назад

      Sorry didn’t specify that bacon should be used sparingly and only in small amounts because dogs (esp small dogs) don’t process fats well and can get pancreatitis which can be fatal. Lean meats and small amounts of bacon bits or better dog treats that they love are best. 😀👍👍🐕🐕🐕

      @@IreneIronTravels Hi there! I actually watched your video today. I was doing a big post maintenance test flight and bringing the plane home from annual maintenance when you released it.
      How awesome! Remy got an honorable mention!! That would have been hilarious---same trailer, almost same truck, ......and same dog name!
      It is always interesting to see the criteria that folks use for their dog picks. Ours was 1) don't have to bend over to pet it, and 2) one that we don't have to put a coat on. But...fact of the matter is that Remy is my wife's and mine's 5th german shepherd.
      Before I forget.....Remy just ruffed in my ear that he looks forward to meeting Louie in Ouray.......or at Pets Mart.....or in the desert........or on any adventure!! Louie is a mega cutie! What a cuddle monster too!!
      Trailer status-- I contacted the trailer repair guy yesterday. He said he will start the repair of our rig. It needs to be 60 degrees for the fiberglass repairs.
      And..I was called by Holiday RV that our dinette window and front auto level control module have arrived!! woo hoo!
      QUESTION: So, I was unaware about being hitched and using the auto leveler. Just leave your hitch connected to the truck and activate the auto leveler like normal?? I assume you have to be on a somewhat level spot already? Or...was that a manual drop of the jacks?

    • @IreneIronTravels
      @IreneIronTravels  2 года назад +1

      Hey Alan! Glad to hear the status on your Rv is progressing! You could probably use the auto level while attached to the truck if you are pretty level. My concern ( and why I am doing the jacks manually) is if it try’s to lift or lower too much and gets stressed because of the truck…..

    I have found a harness much better for the pup than a leash on the collar...and safer on his neck. And he won't be able to slip out of the collar. Louie is adorable.

    I have had 2 basenjis and I love this breed good things are no barking , has no smell even when wet, doesn’t shed much, has tons of energy to match your energy
    Great size for travelling. They are a lot like cats as they are ok being alone for periods of time
    Great sleepers
    Love going on walks or runs
    Some down sizes.
    They always need to be on a leach as they tend to bolt.
    Are very independent and view themselves as equal to humans it seems.
    Chase anything that moves
    They love to chew so make sure he has enough chew toys or else he will chew your stuff
    Always ready to play
    Mine currently is 13 years old and on raw food which he does better on than dry food
    Enjoy they are a little different than a conventional dog but my favorite
    Any questions let me know as I didn’t realize when I got one how different they are than a regular dog

    Love the open honest emotions about your new puppy. The maternal instinct was in high gear....loved it! I have had Golden Retrievers for the past fifty plus years. Every time we get a new Golden puppy we go into new parent excitement....even now! Nothing better than a new puppy. We always have a young Golden with a older one.....the older Golden actually helps to "house break" the young one.....after the initial jealous resentment wears off the older Golden...usually two days. Congratulations!!!!!

    Congrats on your new addition. We travel in our Winnebago Horizon with our two basenji. As a basenji breeder for 30 years I do have to make a couple corrects. Basenji have low dander, but they are NOT hypoallergenic. Weight for females tend to be around 20 to 23 lbs and males 25 - 28 lbs. Campers also need to know that a basenji is one dog that should not be allowed off leash. They are a sight hound and if they see prey they go into full hunt mode. For walking purchase a good martingale collar. Safe travels and enjoy your new baby.

    We had a basenji many years ago. He suffered from separation anxiety and sounded like a little kid screaming when you left him. Lots of energy, too. But a very inquisitive and fast learning animal. They are sight-hounds so if they see something they will take off after it and they are fast! I hope things go well.

    Your new pup is adorable. I know you are going to love having him. One big thing I would recommend is using a harness for leash walking. Having a leash attached to a collar can damage their tracheas and cause collapsing trachea. If you haven't already done so, get him microchipped and be sure to keep your online microchip info up-to-date. Also attach an ID tag to his harness and put both of your cell numbers on the tag. I would also recommend getting him neutered at the appropriate age. Happy pet parenting!

    Beautiful pup. Crate training will be your lifesaver for the house training. I really like a "wonder walker" harness. Really takes the pressure off their neck if they are a pulling active dog. Super easy slip on harness. No juggling of feet to get on.

    Just saw your Basenji puppy video. I have a female (Kamille) that just turned 6. I absolutely love her to death, but I don’t think that I could have picked a higher maintenance dog. Probably most important is to always keep him on a leash. If he gets loose, he will take off and not think about coming back. Watch your power cords (especially while plugged in) and seatbelts. These dogs have serious teeth and when they get bored, they will “saw@ through anything extremely fast. Oh, and All of your jackets will loose they’re zipper pulls if you leave them within reach. Other than that, Basenji’s are really cool :)

    As someone has suggested, get him started on learning that his safe space is his kennel if you’re going to use one. If you NEVER intend to use a kennel that’s fine, it’s much harder to get a dog to associate a kennel as their safe space the older they get. Also, hopefully you purchased some puppy training pads. you can place them on the floor inside of your rv so when he starts to piddle you can place him on the pad. The pads also are scented to encourage him to go on them. That way if he does have an ‘accident’ inside it will be localized.

    You are doing great with Louie. I have 3 adult basenjis right now. Yes, a basenji puppy will sleep a lot, just like a baby does. It's completely normal. Continue to socialize him and take him with you whenever you can. Make sure he has toys that he can chew and play with. Eventually you will want to get him a martingale collar as basenjis can easily slip out of the type of collar that you are currently using. I know people who use harnesses, however, all 3 of mine can somehow get out of a harness no matter the brand or how tight I put it on. Many basenji owners use leather Martingale collars. A good inexpensive Martingale collar brand is called Lupine and come in pretty colors and patterns. They are guaranteed for life no matter what. Many pet stores sell them. One of my basenjis likes to chew the collars off the other two and I literally brought 3 back for replacements in one week before I decided that I had to remove all collars while indoors. Basenjis are extremely intelligent and escape artists. My female that likes to chew collars off the other two also knows how to open the crates and releases her brother and mother from their crates. She is a naughty basenji. Oh and as for potty training, I used bells that hung from the door nob and I would take my basenji's paw, hit the bell with it, then take her out and when she went potty, I would give her a treat and praise her. She learned to do it on her own super fast and was quickly potty trained. Like I said, the breed is intelligent. You guys are doing wonderful with Louie!

    Catching up on past few weeks videos. Congratulations and Little Louie looks like a Louie! Irene and Louie make a great combination! He’ll light up your life and keep you occupied for sure. Hang a set of small bells at from your door handle that he can reach and ring them every time you’re trying to get him out, take his paw and guide him to ring them, give him a treat when he starts tapping them to go out.

    Congratulations on your new pup!!! He will undoubtedly bring you years of joy and unconditional love. You ( and he) are very lucky. One piece of advice concerning his health…( I’m sure you are already getting WAY more advice than you wanted but this is important.). Puppies bones and cartilage take time ( many months - up to 18) form fully, and too much exercise can harm their growth plates and cause long term issues. You have to search thoroughly, but there is some useful info available online. For the first several months a puppy should be self- led…meaning just nosing around and doing what he would do on his own. Long walks ( and / or running for any distance ) shouldn’t be part of his first six months . It’s definitely even more important for larger dogs. I know you guys love to run and go for long walks. He will be a great companion, but in these early months please know that his exercise should be in short increments. ( fortunately he is small enough that you can carry him !). Have fun, and know that he will likely “ house train “very quickly with you guys there with him all the time. Enjoy!!

    I thought it was nuts when my daughters decided to make a multiday, cross-country trip to get a dog. I mean, there are dogs Everywhere. But, the miniature dachshund puppy they brought home has been a perfect addition to the family. AND, he loves to hike, and carries his own gear in his miniature backpack. (You might look into that!)
    Oh--learned this from someone with experience--large birds can harm--or even carry away!--tiny dogs! So they make cute vests for these little guys, topped with large, bright foam spikes that make these puppies look less like lunch.
    Happy for you! Enjoy!

    Seems like you got a good puppy! You are very lucky. Cutie pie! I'm sure in no time he will get adjusted to your lifestyle and he is the perfect size! I like the name Copper, but Louie is cute too. Whatever you do, don't name him Jack, for many obvious reasons! Lol! Have fun with your new fur baby!🐕💖

    We just got our new puppy on Tuesday. Although this is our fourth dog, we signed up for Baxter & Bella online dog training. It’s a really great resource. Great price for a lifetime membership which includes multiple classes, tons of videos and personal zoom calls with live trainers. At a minimum, it makes sure both my husband and I are on the same page.

    Suggestions: 1. harness for walks and runs, and 2. When he starts to pee and poop outside, say the word you want to use for the next 15 years, several times while he’s doing it. Over time, my dog George and I have settled on two terms: Do you have to poop? Do you have to lift your leg? He will tell me in response, which he needs to do. As in, he’ll twirl around when I say the correct thing. Don’t use: do you have to go out? Because you two will be saying go and out a lot, for all kinds of generic reasons.

      @@IreneIronTravels I learned this long ago watching Barbara Woodhouse. She had a British- import TV dog training show in the early 80’s. (Check her out on RUclips- she’s the Julia Childs of dog training.) She used the term “hurry up” because she didn’t want to say anything off-color when out in public, at like a rest stop or dog park. Just use the term, at first, when he is doing the thing. Later, you can start using it to ask him if he needs to (….). Have fun guys.

    Congrats on the pup. BTW, have you considered using an aircast for your ankle instead of a wrap. I've rolled my ankle a number of times and had bad sprains and using an aircast was very helpful with recovery. Unfortunately once you have this type of injury you're at more of a risk for a repeat . Using resistance band exercises is also helpful.

    First night we got our puppy (he is 13 now) my husband bought a crate for him because he wanted him to be safe when we are sleeping. We put him in the crate, shut the lights off except for a night light and went to bed. Within 5 minutes all you heard was little cries coming from living room. My husband who insisted the puppy was not sleeping in our bed, got up grabbed the puppy and put him in our bed and that is were he slept every night until he turned 13. He cannot get in our bed anymore and we do not put him because we are afraid he would jump out an get hurt. Enjoy the puppy, he is a cutie..

I’ve had 4 kids and yes you feel like you have no idea and they just let you leave the hospital with them - no manual or instruction book - I got a bigger instruction manual with the tv purchase. Anyway I’m sure by now you are all 3 settled in! I saw on your IG post that Louie has taken over half the RV leaving you slivers to workout in - I have the same with my cat River - by the time we load her litter box and the bed and the scratching pad and all the toys - crazy! BTW I wanted to ask - did you cover your vents with something? I’d love to hear about that if you did? Thanks for sharing your puppy story! He is super cute and I’m soooo happy for you!!

    … you can teach him … ultimately … to go to the bathroom ‘on command’ … we us the command “get busy”. Keep saying it when you take him out; and when he finally ‘goes’… pet him really friskly and tell him “you’re such a good dog … such a good dog”. This behavior will really be helpful when you’re traveling … a gas stop is also a bathroom ‘break’

    The most important thing to do while training is, you must walk the dog. Dogs need to rome. Like fish need to swim dogs need to walk. Walking is where boundaries are established and bonding with his new pack you and Aaron. Trust is also established the most important building block of training. Get him on a walk schedule and walk him not just around the site, walk him until he relieves hime self and more. Don't let him walk in-front and lead the walk, that is your job to lead. Also a good rule of thumb. However old he is, is how often you should walk him in the beginning. For example, if he is 4 months old he should go out every 4 hours 5 months old every 5 hours you get the picture. Make sur you get a kennel that is fit for his size, you do not want it to be to large so he doesn't relieve himself in then kennel. Make sure it is just big enough that he can stand and turn in a circle comfortably. Try to get hime to enter his kennel on his own. Do not put him in his kennel for punishment or if you get frustrated. His kennel is his safe space. Never hit or yell, firm one word commands, Come, stay, no with a firm but calm voice when he listens and follows a command praise him. Do not use his name with a correction command for example (No Louie) you do not want hime to confuse his name with NO. Just say NO. I hope this helps. Congrats he is beautiful.
