    What an incredibly rich life for your basenjis! Loved seeing contented dogs living a games and rewards-based life with lots of training, love and enrichment. Our two basenjis were my first dogs, over 35 years ago. They were challenging “first dogs,” and we made many training mistakes. I wish I knew then what I know now about positive reinforcement and relationship-based training. I love your set-up for them with a large exercise pen, couch/bed and crate, plus an area to relieve themselves and a big variety of toys! I also love that you give them time for walks and training individually. That’s so important in a multi-dog household, tho I did not know it when I had my two basenjis. Thank you for so beautifully filming a typical day in the life of your lucky dogs!

    I have enjoyed finding your channel! I’m a professional canine behaviorist and will be bringing my first (red) Basenji home early 2024. I’m absorbing every bit of Basenji content that I can. I absolutely love to see how much enrichment and stimulation your dogs have. This is exactly how I plan to raise mine. Your dogs are so confident and attentive! People say this breed is difficult to train but you prove them wrong! I look forward to bingeing more of your videos!

      thank you so much for your kind feedback!!! These basenjis are my first dogs, and I must admit I knew very little about the breed when I got them, but now I wouldn't want to have any other breed! they are so human-like, independent thinkers and also so much fun 😊 all the best with your first basenji pup!

    Dang you have taught your Basenjis so many aspects of discipline and training as well as so many tricks that I thought it would be impossible to accomplish. I have had five Basenjis in my lifetime and I thought I was doing good with handling them but that was marginal in compare to what you do. Beautiful dogs and great video. Thank you!

Fascinating to have a peak backstage like this and I can see clearly why your basenjis are so motivated to understand and work with you to do so many wonderful things! 😊

    Thank you so very much. You have made me realize I need to spend more time nurturing my beautiful Basenji boy as he is showing signs of aggression from spending too much time in the yard (BAD advice from the Breeder). I can tell when I am with him how much potential he has. He is still young enough for him to train & learn. His parents are both DOUBLE Grand Champions - one being in Agility. Want to put him both into Agility & Lure Coursing. LOTS of work ahead!. Again, thank you so very much for sharing such valuable information. What type of food are you feeding them & how old are they?

      thank you very much for your comment! basenjis being such a smart breed definitely do so much better when their brain is stimulated. I beleive they are more content and calm when they are regularly engaged in enrichment activities. Besides, doing things together strengthens your bond.
      my two are nearly 3 years old now. They have kibble in the morning and a salmon roll in the evening. they have some food allergies so are mostly on fish based diet.
      I am sure your boy would love agility! I do agility with Oringo and its so much fun for both of us.

    Basenji's don't have that lovey dovey expression of most dogs, that "smile." They do have a greeting sound, a yodel, and wag their tails only then. They don't wag as part of a general, good-natured romp. In other words, they're not generally as friendly. They want what they want, for instance, escape. They don't want to be cooped up with you. You have to force yourself on them, and they're going to find ways around you when they can. They do rip things up. Not a dog for everybody.

      It's very interesting how you described basenji, and I tend to agree with this, even though its a generalisation and I've seen very friendly basenjis who love all people and like to please.

    This can't be a realistic way to manage these dogs. I should say not the only way because your entire life would basically revolve around keeping them occupied.

      thank you for the comment! I do put a lot of time into my dogs, and I feel blessed that I am able to - I work from home and have family members who help. At the same time, keeping this general routine, I find that my dogs are very forgiving if/when I am unable to give them that level of attention - they cope very well if we skip walks, or they need to stay home alone for a full day, if required.

      @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407  Год назад +4

      You are welcome!
      I try to give them regular individual walks for a number of reasons: ensure they develop and maintain their confidence as individuals and are not too reliant on each other; nurture my personal bond with each of them; do some outdoor training with each. I really enjoy our individual walks, there is so much more connection I feel with them this way.
      They never showed any food agression towards people, but definitely have it towards each other and other dogs.
      They are my first dogs, except for a poodle my family had when I was a child 😊

    You don’t crate them at night when they sleep I see just during the day ? What if you crate a basenji when they sleep and also during day when you are out of house ? Would you leave them alone in play pen if you went out ?

    • @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407
      @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407  11 месяцев назад +1

      thats right, I dont crate at night, mainly so they don't wake me up in the morning if they need to go toilet and can go themselves. Because I use enclosures, there is no real need for me to lock them in crates, I only do it so they keep that skill and stay crate trained. If I go out during their day sleep I keep them in crates, otherwise in the enclosure or the hallway with access to the backyard. It would be perfectly fine to use the crate both for day and night sleep, as long as the dog is comfortable with the crate.

    Hello, thank you for you great videos ! Your dogs are adorable and seem really happy !
    I too have a basenji. It's really nice with people but aggressive with most of the dogs that we meet during the walks. Would you have a solution to that ? (She's very spoiled, maybe too much ?)

    • @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407
      @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407  11 месяцев назад +1

      thank you very much for your feedback! it is very common for basenji after they mature to become hostile to other dogs while they are on leash. especially if also undesexed. this is my personal advice only, and what I did with my dogs:
      1. focus on teaching them to ignore all dogs while on walks. do not approach other dogs while walking and pull your dog on a side if another dog is walking by. using treats, make your dog shift attention from the approaching dog to yourself, before your dog get fixated and aroused. I have a video on that but you can also google how to teach a dog ignore other dogs on walks using positive reinforcement.
      2. group dog obedience classes at your local club is a great way to desensitise your dog to other dogs and teach them to not react when other dogs are around.
      Do not expect or demand from your dog to be friendly with all stranger dogs you meet. It is much safer instead to teach them to ignore other dogs and to not force the interaction. If your dog is still happy to play with other dogs in an off leash park thats great, but on leashed walks other dogs should be ignored.
