My grandfather was an officer in the ARVN. He was a captain by the start of the war and by the end, he was a major. He didn't rank up a lot because he didn't see much combat due to his job. He was a civil engineer. After the war, he was put into a reeducation camp like this veteran here. When he was released in 1984, he moved to the US and built a house for his family. He passed away in December of 2020.

My grandpa fought in the Vietnam war. He had 7 children and worked and fought alongside the Americans and Australians. Speaking English, Vietnamese, French and Cambodian. He was a highly decorated soldier, the informants came looking for him after the war. He fled with my dad and uncle, fleeing through a rice field and having bullets indescrimnately shooting at innocent people. He ended up in Sydney with his two sons, my dad and uncle. He passed away before I could meet him. May you rest Ong Ngoai, thank you for your sacrifice, for helping those in the village fight against opression. And for fighting for our family and where we are today.

My grandfather was an ARVN airborne Sergeant. He defended Saigon in the last day till the last bullet. The North commie sent him to the concentration camp for 2 years and took our home in Saigon, sent the rest of our family to their so-called “New economy zone”. We will never forget what the commie did to us, to other ARVN soldiers, to the free Republic of Vietnam

They called the Airborne "Angels in Red Hats". The Airborne Division of the ARVN were all volunteers (Like the Marine Division) no conscripts. So unfortunately they were treated very harshly by the VC after the fall of Saigon. They were the last ARVN troops to surrender, still fighting the NVA at TSN Airport on the last morning of the war.

Nice to see more interviews of South Vietnamese vets.
Mainstream Vietnam War history often portrays it as the Americans fighting "the Vietnamese", ignoring our antiCommunist South Vietnamese allies.
Did Hanoi Jane and her ilk who opposed military aid to South Vietnam say a peep when the South Vietnamese were put into "re-education camps"?

I don’t know if they are entirely taking Ho Chi Minh’s side, or just ignorant.

My Ông Ngoại (Grandpa on moms side) fought in the South Vietnamese army then Air Force. He was a lieutenant (highest rank you could achieve as a draftee). He was sent to a re-education camp and faked an incurable illness, so after 30 days of faking they let him go (since they thought he was going to die). He then went back to my family, and took all of them to America. I was born in the USA and he died when I was 17 (now 23). Forever greatful for what he did for my family.

My father served in the Vietnamese Marines because they were better trained and fed well. He avoided ARVN mainly because it was conscripted and there was a lot of graft and corruption. He wished things were different with how the structure was ran. But him and all Vietnamese people are in debt to all the democracies that sheltered and adopted us. I can happily say that today, he can pass away peacefully in Vietnam or United States. Both countries are currently strong Allie’s.

They were brainwashed that the VC would massacre them if they took over the South, which history recorded was not the case. Regarding the lack of ammunition and equipment, the amount of war booty captured by the VC was worth nearly 5 billion dollars in 1975 and the ammunition was enough for the VC to fight for 10 years in Cambodia. They are simply a mercenary for the US, with no spirit of unifying the country but just following orders. Regarding being in prison, he certainly has never been to the prisons that his regime has reserved for VC throughout the South, especially in Con Dao and Phu Quoc. Tens of thousands of prisoners were tortured to death there without trial. His regime's crimes against its own people are unforgivable, ridiculous for the so-called love of homeland.

The truth is there was no record of bloodbath in Saigon, however there was a silent bloodbath when the re-education start, Vietnam at that time was the largest prison state in South East Asia. Over 1 - 2.5 million people went to re-education camp WITHOUT A SENTENCE & over 150,000 didn't make it out alive - IS 150K not considered a bloodbath? Not to mention, did You know which was the longest imprisonment in re-education camp after 1975? it was over 37 years - in the case of CPT. Nguyen Huu Cau for accusing 2 VC official raped 2 innocent boat-women. You mentioned Phu Quoc? Did you know that in 1973, the VC prisoners that did NOT want to join prisoner exchange over Thach Han River, there were political and civilian prisoners in PHU QUOC, you can't compare the 2 treatment between 2 class of criminals - YOU CAN'T GET IN PHU QUOC PRISON WITHOUT A TRAIL under Republic of Vietnam Laws - you are INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY.

ARVN also had a widespread corruption & MIDDLE LEVEL LEADERSHIP - NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT, but comparing a 1975, ARVN was alot weaker in 1972 but they managed to win Easter Offensive ( Chiến Dịch Xuân Hè by the VC), in April 30th, Br General Le Minh Dao held Xuan Loc for 12 consecutive days. On April 30th 1975, South Vietnam fell into the hands of the Communists from the North. Countless Southerners from various backgrounds were being herded into concentration camps. The author was one of them.
"I MUST LIVE!" was the loudest scream I had ever made, which activated my survival instinct when I was tortured to the point of death. Thanks to these three words, I was able to survive in order to recount the painful and horrifying experiences to share with the readers. It was a type of experience that the readers could not possess and no one wished to have.
In short, this is my experience: HUMAN COMPASSION HAS ITS LIMITS, BUT HUMAN EVIL IS BOUNDLESS, ESPECIALLY WHEN THAT EVIL IS INCITED AND INDOCTRINATED BY THE VIETNAMESE COMMUNIST REGIME.
I hope the book I MUST LIVE! will give readers a deep insight into the darkest side of life, at the same time as to realize that they are the most fortunate people on earth compared to the life of the author. Father Nguen huu Le.

When the French defeated and left Vietnam in 1954. The country divided into two partition states: North Vietnam is the communist and the South is Republic under Democracy government. So, let both side of Vietnam run their countries the way they want. The American participated in to assist by providing aids to South Vietnam to fight back the International Communist (that is Soviet Union and China). So, the US helped South Vietnam so long until 1973 and declared to withdraw cutting significant aids to South Vietnam. The let South Vietnam fight alone against North Vietnam (North Vietnam with the helps from Soviet and China)...and so those nations (US, Australia, Korea, Philippines, Thailand and the whole West) under Democracy running away. Sounds great, huh? Ultimately, the citizens of the Republic of South Vietnam collapsed and its people stranded and faced the consequences of all cost: jails, rapes, rootings, refugees, death, poor, loss....You name it. Why the West entered the war rather let South Vietnam taking care of their country from the beginning, so they didn't depend on the West? You promised and ran away from this war.

They didn't promise to be in a forever war. I guess you are forgeting that the US had 58,000 soldiers killed in Vietnam. They had already lost over 30,000 troops to hold South Korea less than two decades prior as well. It's hard to sell tens of thousands of your own soldiers dying half a world away for people you don't really know or share much with culturally. The US also isn't a dictatorship. So every 4 years public opionion can change etc.
Also, the US didn't lose a single major battle in Vietnam. The issue was they were not going to invade and occupy the North. So they opted to instead fund the south and provide aid. Unless the world was ok with the US taking control and dominating the entirety of North Vietnam, it was pointless.
The saddest part? The US won anyways. Communsim in Russia, China, and Vietnam all collapsed in the 80s. Now all 3 are primarily capitalist countries and all attached to the US and Western Europe for economic success. The war didnt even need to happen.

There’s a point we should all notice: After the U.S. stopped aid for South Vietnam, they didn’t have enough capabilities to fight anymore. That means they depended on the U.S.-which is an outsider-to protect themselves.
Objectively, war (or politics in general) isn’t a game of right or wrong; it’s the game of winners and losers, and the winner is considered the right side. So, if South Vietnam couldn’t fight by themselves, they didn’t deserve to win. That’s it.
    P.S.:
    - I'm Vietnamese, living in Vietnam right now, my grandfather was a government official in South Vietnam. Even thought I tried to be objective, I know my opinion may offends some of you.

Well the same could be said about the north to be honest. Last time I checked, the rifle most commonly associated/used by them (the AK-47) wasn’t a weapon created by them… the north won because they were being backed and supplied by 2 of the biggest communist states of the time (Russia and china) that didn’t care about how much they were spending to fuel their communist cousin’s war effort. America’s people on the other hand did have a say in the matter with how much they we’re spending on it’s capitalist cousin, though unfortunately it would result in the south losing.

If you talk or brag like that about our Vietnam's re-education program, then look at the prisons of the Republic of Vietnam. There, Communist prisoners of war were brutally tortured and treated disgustingly, shot to death without mercy. Before accusing others, look back at what you have done to them. But can you confirm the information you gave? In other countries, prisoners of war on the losing side will be shot. For example, in France after WW2, people who followed the Vichy government were all killed. In Korea after WW2, those who collaborated with the Japanese fascists were also shot. Only 1/10 of your soldiers go to re-education camp and the rest integrate into society. The people who go to re-education camps are only high-ranking commanders of your government.

  • @spike_picard
    @spike_picard 8 месяцев назад +6

Based on the comments I read at the time of writing, here are my thoughts of the war, both mainstream, and sources from people in the south. Have fun reading.
"The US originally 'invaded' Vietnam" -> This is commonly taught to everyone in Vietnam post '75. However, South Vietnam (RVN) was created by the co-operation of the new southern government (successors of the final Emperor of Vietnam + a French handover of leadership) with the US (the "liberators" and French's successor that want to kick out the French but don't want to leave due to communism).
South Vietnam's "illegitimacy" -> This ties in with the first. While the idea that the US prop up a "puppet state" in the South spread after '75, the same can be said to the north. The southern government at least have the lineage date back to the Nguyen dynasty (the final dynasty in Vietnam). The flag is also a final version from the previous dynasty's flag (yellow flag with red circle) with a mix of the history of the French colonial era (white flag with 2 blue stripes). The northern flag have little source to prove its lineage. Official the red and yellow star is a new creation after the formation of the new northern government in '45. But other sources cites the appearance of the red flag from southern China. The flag was seen moving to Vietnam when the Kuomintang liberation force cross the border to arrive at Hanoi. Couple this with photo evidences of South VN's flag hanged around Hanoi post '45, and the way communist parties work (there is no such thing as nations in socialism; they are part of the larger sphere of influence), there can be a legitimate case to say the Soviet and China "prop up" the northern government. Both government were legit, and both were heavily influenced during the entire war.
US soldiers' brutality -> There are videos of US soldiers in villages and cities everywhere. But rarely any photos from soldiers in the north. They are infamous for scaring and disguising among southern civilians, which make it difficult for southern and US soldiers to advance (these gorilla tactics are reveal by northern soldiers after the war). War is always brutal. But the south have freedom of press that allowed quick communication from the frontline to the media back in the US. Effectively dooming the support for the war.
Agent Orange -> Real effects or false claims. Look for correlation between the agent and people, vs the agent for plants. They work on plants, but their effects on people are mostly on presumptions. The US still allocate money for the recovery effort, which is good regardless (because whether the correlation is real, the civilians still need help). There is little mention of food rations, many are full with unknown preservatives, that were supplied from China to the same regions where agent orange were presumably used. These rations are not tested, and where delivered straight to people in poorer central regions. There is a sharp difference in the number of cases where people were affected by agent orange, with central regions affected the most. It's also strange that the central region were where supplies from the north arrived into the most; and many cases of agent orange are people in families that have contacted to north Vietnamese soldiers.
There are a lot more. You can start looking into them. English sources are limited but you can also translate the Vietnamese articles from both mainland Vietnam and overseas for further information. Try to authenticate and explore these:
    - Origins of Ho Chi Minh (this guy have evidences that he were born in China; the where able the original person Nguyen Ai Quoc after he left Vietnam is unknown)
    - The naming of Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam. This re-enforced the claim above. Throughout history, the last name was used when referring to the dynasty, while the middle and first name was for normal naming. (Nguyen dynasty. Emperor Nguyen Phuc (Bao Dai), Tran dynasty, Emperor Tran Thanh Tong. Or the famous general Giap (Vo Nguyen Giap)). No one called other as their last name. But Ho Chi Minh was always referred to as 'uncle Ho', not 'uncle Minh'
    - Claims of corruptions in the south from the north and US reporters. Locate their sources (for example, every government will have some form of small corruptions. But the north claimed that the failure of controlling corruption is one of the main causes of the south's collapse. In the mean time, the final president of RVN have a friendly policy with the north, and the former prime minister of RVN - Nguyen Cao Ky, fled Vietnam, and become friendly with the new government again. Soldiers in the rank have family members in the north army. Some even provide money to support the war and to get a good pardon afterward. There were traitors left and right in the southern chain of command that 'corruption' was the least of their worries.
    - Interesting story: Former president Nguyen Van Thieu and the 'missing' 16 tons of gold 'fiasco'. The legitimacy of the accusations. (fun fact, the gold were still in the country, yet people escaped Vietnam were still accusing Thieu of shipping them to the US in a few 'luggage bags')
    - Lasting consequences of the socialist reforms from '75 to '86 (that's why Vietnamese currency have so many 00000)
    - Southern liberation front: A socialist government yet more friendly to the west. Working in tandem with the north for years to liberate the south, dissolved a month after reunification.
Pol-Pot: The leader guy were buddies with Mao and Ho for years. Until he went rogue and decimate Cambodia. Then invade Vietnam in '78, in which Vietnam have to occupy Cambodia for nearly a decade.

Sir. My grandfather also served South Vietnam as a truck driver. However, he realized the truth and stayed at Saigon at the day of reunification. And unlike your "story" up there, my grandfather willingly accepted reforming and were allowed to go home after 3 days. And then....he lived happily under this very flag 🇻🇳. His son was 10 at that time. And yes, that boy would then become father of me & my little brother. None of us got to suffer any animosity because of my grandfather's history. Heck, my maternal side of family have elders serving North Vietnam. Yet none of...i repeat...NONE of them showed any disgust to my grandfather. We Vietnamese have one thing in common: Forgiveness. We did so to Nguyễn Cao Kỳ & Dương Văn Minh. So please. Stop spreading lie about North Vietnam & Vietcong. The truth is the truth. You walked away from your birthplace.

If your grandfather had of been an infantry soldier in the Airborne or Marine Divisions, I can guarantee you 101% the VC would not of let him go home after three days and "forgiven everything". The VC divided their southern "enemies" into different categories, while a truck driver with a willingness to accept the new bosses may of gotten off lightly.
