    Thank you so much! I'm a 55 year-old woman and fixed it myself. I feel so proud. My mower wouldn't start after winter and I drained the old gas and took off the bolt like you said and cleaned the holes with a sewing needle. Mine looked a little different but it had a few holes in it. Cleaned the gunk around the area with an old toothbrush and put fresh gasoline in it and it started! I'm so happy, thanks again for taking the time to make this video.

      I always point out that fact that, yes, you fo need to drain out the old gas, sldo, wouldn't hurt to to replace the fuel line as well as install a gasoline fuel filter, and replace your fuel fulter every two years.

    Really quite an amazing tip. I tried everything to start my relatively new mower that had sat for a season. I literally had a blister on my hand from pulling the starter cord so many times. Bought a can of carb cleaner. Sprayed the heck out of the carburetor. No change. Put gas treatment in tank. Tried to run the mower. No change. I was ready to buy a new carburetor and I stumbled on this video. What did I have to lose, so I tried it. It took ten minutes to do. I laughed to myself when I pulled the start cord. I had a brand new Toro lawn mower that ran flawlessly the first year, but by the 3rd or 4th use of the mower the second year, it was hard to start and then ran only briefly. From the very beginning, I noticed the plastic gas cap was hard to close. I did a little head scratching and came up with the idea that the cap wasn't sealing properly, allowing the more volatile component of the gasoline to evaporate. I emptied all the old gas out & replaced it with fresh fuel. It started right up and has run perfectly since. Bottom line : regardless how much of a pain in the neck securing the gas cap is, make sure it is completely tight. I also went on Toro's website to let them know about the gas cap tighening problem, but I've not heard back.

    TIP: Pinch off rubber fuel /gas/petrol line with locking Vise grips so it doesn't spill all over or pour gas out into pan out of fuel tank, doing two people is easier. Those holes are what feed the fuel to the engine & small pieces of grass, dirt or even plastic from manufacturing can plug them. As well this drians any possible water that may have collected in the fuel bowl.

    I removed the carburetor to fix the thing from leaking gasoline (which meant removing the bolt and reinstalling it as well). Done. But no starty. Took out the spark plug, cleaned it up, wire brushed it. But no starty. Went to the local hardware store and bought a new plug. No starty. Figured, what the heck, just try this and see if it works. Starty! I was shocked because I already had that bolt off and cleaned the whole carburetor thoroughly. I am pretty sure I wiped that bolt down, too. But low and behold, when I took off the bolt and cleaned out those holes, it started up like it was champion. Holy crap! Thanks!

    Thank you for posting this video. My mower had been running 'just fine', though I'll admit that it probably wasn't, it just ran well enough to cut the grass, and then - this weekend, 'suddenly', it wouldn't start.
    I'm not the most handy person when it comes to engines - but I followed your recommendations. I disassembled the air intake, and used a stripped bread-tie, and poked several of the gasoline ports, and then worked on the air filter which was totally caked and clogged with grass and dirt. I scraped the gunk off and then poured a tiny bit of gasoline through the sponge (after removing it to a pan to catch the nasty run off ) and then let it air for a few minutes, before reassembling everything. The mower started right up, and it ran much better than it has for a while. Saved me from buying a new one or paying a repair shop. Thanks again!

    @johnheck2611 6 лет назад +26

    The "bolt" is a jet that feeds the gas into the mower from the bowl. This is the problem with 90% to 95% of the time. To confirm this problem before repair, drizzle a little gas into the carb and it should run for just a while. This tells you the mower cannot get it"s own fuel.

  • @Anonymous-it5jw
    @Anonymous-it5jw 6 лет назад +5

    Great video, thanks. Try letting a little gas run though the fuel line to the bottom of the carburetor when you remove the bowl - catch it with a paper towel so you can see if any gunk is coming out of the gas tank and fuel line with the gas - the same kind of gunk that clogged up the holes in the first place. After cleaning the bolt, be sure to turn it upside down and gently tap it on a fairly soft surface to remove any gunk that might still be in the bolt. I noticed the gasket around the bolt appeared to be torn - think about replacing it to avoid future leaks from the bottom of that bowl.

    I was going to make fun of this but the bread tie is a great carb cleaning tool. Of course not all mowers are the same, but it seems like you've helped many people which is neat! Really if you empty the old gas from the tank and bowl, change the oil every year or two, and run a little Seafoam the first of the year, your mower should be very low maintenance. Don't let it get water in it, and check the oil before you use it. $175?? Wow. Also be sure your blade doesn't become loose or too dull. And any time you work on a mower it's not a bad idea to disconnect the spark plug wire.

I mow my lawn and my neighbor's lawn, front and back once a week here in Austin, TX 8 months out of the year and I've had a very hard time keeping my mower running. I've been told that water gets in the line and then I need a carb rebuild, and tune up while their at it. Ha, this very simple fix saved me $175 once or twice a year getting my lawn mower working again. Granted, I did pour Iso Heet in my gas tank before the gas and that may have helped finish the cleaning, but it was definitely this tip that got it running again!

      Yep or use something like Sea Foam which basically keep things from getting mucked up. When mower sits with gas there will be a varnish deposit in those places which keeps the fuel from flowing properly. Sea Foam will help remove this varnish.

    Ap 4/'21 WORKED! Used electrical contact cleaner and 100 grit on sparkplug, ran the wire through the hole and sprayed both with DUSTOFF spray air. Primed 3x and moved throttle into full position. PERFECT - FIRST PULL - after a few earlier hours of frustration. :-)

    Recently my 3 yo mower started playing up on me. It could start a few times in a day and then I'd have to wait for the next day to use it again. After watching this video and some other related videos I decided to give it a go. I cleaned that bolt with a paper clip, also replaced the filter. Along the way I tilted the mower the wrong way while checking the blades and caused petrol leak..haha....but over all, the mower is now easy to start as the day I bought it. I had also checked the service cost in a local mower shop, which quoted about 120 to 200 NZD. This video saved me the money. Thanks man.

    After taking that bolt out,above the bolt is a jet valve. You can use the same wire and stick it through the valve to clean it out also. A can of carb clean with the straw,stick the straw in the hole of the jet vale and blast carb cleaner into it. Most of the time it will stop it from idling up and down.

    now days,leaving old fuel in causes the seat up inside that bowl to swell up. it is pressed in and has to be removed with a dental pick. If your mower floods,or will start on choke or primer only,chances are that seat is swelled up. you will have to remove the carb,turn it upside down,remove the float and needle. that little seat is only a few dollars. next year,drain the gas,dont leave it in. Number one problem with mowers now is gasline gets disolved by bad gas and plugs the jets and the seat swells up. plan on changing the gas line also. I use snowmobile clear gasline now,it doesnt break down.

    If you have acess to a compressor use compressed air to blast out the main jet with;
    then you dont have to buy a loaf of bread to clean out the carb. main jet!

    • @allangrey1950
      @allangrey1950 6 лет назад

      Yeah you can buy small tins of compressed air for not much more than a loaf of bread & you can use it for all sorts of applications.

    use premium fuel in small engine , for some reason it works better and does not gum up in a carburetor after long storage ,
    second if you have a fuel valve turn it off while the engine is running and wait until the fuel dries out from the carburetor ,
    Fuel left in the carburetor for a long time will dry up and damage the carburetor , installing a fuel shut off valve is easy ,
    If engine is hard to start remove the spark plug and use a propane torch burn off the Corbin residue and whatever might be on the spark plug , I do it until the Central Electric and the ground electroid get red hot , of course wait until the spark plug cool down before reinstalling it , in the Old Country Palestine we used to put a small amount of gasoline on the ground put the spark plug in the middle of it and set it on fire , that always worked to get us out of a jam ,

    I can’t find the support and donate button on your site, but this worked for me. Mower had been stored for two seasons and prepped with oil change and filter yesterday. Couldn’t get it to work. Watched your video, drained my gasoline and followed directions. Unplugged spark plug, unbolted thingy and cleaned it out. Worked as advertised. Thanks.
