Unions are also great at causing huge issues. NYC electrician union for example. A trade school went "There are 100s of jobs that are not being serviced because they don't have enough electricians! We should fix that!" and started a school. First series of graduates. Couldn't join the Union. Why? The Union wanted to protect their *current* electricians. The Union wanted to have them the option to pick and choose jobs. If they increased the number by 50, not a actual number, electricians some of their inept electricians would suddenly not be getting as many jobs so they pretty much went "Nope. Not here. Go elsewhere".
Now, to counter my own story a bit. If you tripled the number of electricians in the city. Sure those '100s of jobs' would decrease until probably they wouldn't have enough jobs for all the electricians in the union which is what they're there to protect. Which is fair.
But as a customer, wouldn't you rather the Union go "Ok. We'll take the top 90% of the electricians and not keep the incompetent ones"? Because Unions tend to start out fighting for the people who need it and then get into petty BS territory after a bit of time. A lot like HOAs.

My mother worked in a company that had a union (no, she was not part of it). Anyways I remember that the union went on strike for something (benefits probably) and a bunch of her work friends were complaining about how they wouldn't be able to feed their families if it lasted too long

    • @Captain_Bad_Bill
      @Captain_Bad_Bill 7 месяцев назад +3

@bleachedkill yeah, a strike can apply pressure against a company to force their hand, but if the company has deep enough pockets, they can outlast a union. I have seen companies that push back against the union & if they can show that the union is not "negotiating in good faith," they can use that to break the union and the workers, at least, lose wages or benefits or, at worst, simply lose they jobs. I've seen companies simply close shop and sell out, some times to themselves, and workers are S.O.L.

My first job was a Storeman and I had to join the Union. We went on strike for 3 weeks, no pay and in the end our Union accepted the exact same deal the company offered in the first place. Another time my forklift had developed a crack in the mast that would open a little wider when I had a 1 ton pallet of paper 15 feet in the air, I complained to management, forklift is safe, complained to the incompetent Union lackey Shop Stewart who agreed with management because he knew I didn't vote for him. Luckily he lasted a very short time and we voited in a new Shop Stewart who worked with me, his first job was to put a black ban on my forklift.

@@Captain_Bad_BillYou also have some unions going for predatory expansion, making promises to force their way into areas, and then use it to screw that place to the advantage of others. That happened to my grandfather where the union came into the area with the expansion of a company from another city, the union tricked a bunch of the local shops to join with massive promises, then screwed all of them in exchange for better deals with the larger company that moved in since the locals weren't "senior" enough in the union to stop them with declared strikes pushed through at several of the locations.
Apparently after that went down they found the corpse of the guy heading that with the union with his head caved in, dumped on the porch of the owner of the larger company... but my grandfather only learned that when he got back from his time in the reserves.

Wonder what your mother thought of her friend being arrested and getting jail time for assaulting you? (No, I do not expect you to ask her.)
Days off story: There are positives AND negatives to unions. IMO the biggest negative is that it makes it difficult to fire people who truly need to be fired. And yes, I do know of several instances where this is the case. But I'll also agree it keeps power tripping management from running wild as well. I've also seen some local smaller unions that were useless yes men to the companies involved with them.
HOA story: I'm glad the wall got built. I wonder if OP's insurance sued the HOA company for the damages it had to pay out?

Let me tell you my father's story. My father was a hospital pharmacist his entire career. Back before the drug companies were prohibited to visit physicians and pharmacists (honestly not much has changed), my father would bring home pens...lots and lots of pens...mugs and other do-dads. It was pretty cool! His pharmacy (at this point he was the assistant manager, in charge of every drug purchase and contract) had a new drug distributor and sales manager (same company). The overlord and the sales guy sat down together and made this grand plan. Their home office was based out of Chicago. Both were new on the job and neither had really traveled west of the Mississippi. They booked a flight to Salt Lake City (about a two hour flight from Chicago). There they would visit several hospitals, then rent a car and drive to Boise, Idaho (where I grew up). Then after a couple of visits in Boise, they would drive to Portland, Oregon, make a couple of visits and then drive to Los Angeles stopping at a couple of hospitals on the way, before making their final visits in L.A. to fly back to Chicago.
Anyone who has any knowledge of anything west of the Rockies, knows this is impossible. They flew into Salt Lake, met the clients, drove to Boise, where dad got paid overtime (that is at best a six hour drive, but generally closer to eight, sometimes ten on a bad day), met with my father, looked at the clock and dad said, "So you are going onto Portland, Oregon, right?" "Yep." they replied. Dad said, "Have fun sitting in the car for another eight hours." I don't know when they got back to Chicago. I don't remember getting any pens. They might have been able to sell drugs, but they couldn't read a map.

Unions are indeed great at protection workers, and they indeed do a great job of that, but they can and do sometime go on a power trip. In Québec, they are one of the major reason why building anything is extremely pricy. The entire sector is divided into trades. While I do agree that there are some jobs that shouldn't be done by peoples who don't have the necessary training, I completly disagree with the way that everything is compartmentalised. There's a bunch of simple jobs which construction workers refuse to touch because its not in their job descriptions. The direct result is that everyone end up having to wait on the other trade, which creates a lot of sitting around, on the clock, getting paid to do nothing. The other big issues is that there are peoples who have the required training to perform tasks from multiple trades, but they can't because they are locked into the trade that they are registered as through their union. Its absolutely insane that this is how our construction sector works.

The first time that manager made up her own schedule instead of using the app and waited until the last minute to post it, a grievance should have been filed. It doesn't matter if she liked the app or not. If it's company policy and when the schedule was to be posted, then all of her disregard needs brought to her boss's attention. The grievance may be dismissed, but all of her garbage will be out in the open.

A long time ago, I read that you need to do something different if you have less than 1000 employees and they need a union. In this case, the manager should be replaced. Schedules should be the same from week to week, changing only for holidays, vacations, and emergencies.

The thing about unions is that too often they become so exclusive that you can't get in. the reason Texas became a "right to work" state is because back in the 70s, unions became more about shutting everyone else out than protecting their members. I wish it hadn't gone that way but I understand why so many welcomed it then. I was there and I was one of the ones prevented from working many jobs because i wasn't in a union, nor was i related to anyone who could sponsor me into a union. Unions in this state killed themselves.

Unions are like HOAs, some are competent but the worst of them make the rest look really bad. I'd say 30% are good, 30% are evil, and 40 % are just average. They can and do kill businesses when they want something that the business can't afford.
Personally I find blue flu to be amusing. A lot of places police and fire aren't allowed to strike. So instead they work with the union to have certain people use their sick leave for a couple days in a two week period forcing others to work OT to cover the shifts. When the 2 week pay period is over the guys who picked up the OT would sick out and the original officers who used their sick leave would cover the OT. Both sets of officers would bring in extra money due to time and a half pay. It was a good way to hit the bureaucrats in their most vulnerable appendage - their wallet. On the other hand the unions do protect pieces of shit who have no business in being law enforcement (or nurses, doctors, lawyers, teachers etc).

If that wasn't enough to get her to start using the App as required by the Company, then I'd report her to the State Department of Labor for not posting the Schedule as required by Law...EVERY State has a Law that requires all Employers to post the Schedule 7 or 14 (it varies by State) in advance and once posted, it can NOT be changed without the Written Consent of everyone affected by the change (so if you and a coworker want to swap shifts, the Consent Form must have the signatures of you, the coworker AND your Manager/Supervisor...

US style union's are generally run from the top down, so the base line worker usually gets screwed while those at the top get all the goodies. With the national leadership overriding all the shop/local/state ones (look at the recent Writer's and Actor's strikes to see how f*cked up their unions are run, they screwed over the majority of their members to give everything to like the top 5% of their membership) European styled union's are run from the bottom up. With the shop union having the power until the issue becomes too large and goes beyond their scope. The grievances get passed up the ladder to someone who can deal with it. With the national leadership only dealing with the "big picture", politics and BIG issues. Usually no one is left behind or screwed over because the membership holds the power over their leadership
