Hello, great video. Regarding keeping this plant in semi-hydro. You mention ferilizing during the growing times of year, do you also fertilize during winter - does the plant ever dry out? In normal care for this species, they claim it requires a dry rest with no fertilizer in winter.
Three magnificent blooms. I have a couple of dowianas and they are growing new pseudobulbs. Thank you for showing everyone these beautiful blooms and I long for the day that the blooms I may get are as good as yours....thanks again. Ed
No matter the growing method, I feel that they do require the same few distinct conditions. Very bright sunlight, to be of age, to have had enough time (2-4 years) to adapt to a big change of enviroment, and I refer here to those imported from another continent and climate. Exactly how fast they adapt, depends on the individual itself. Either than that, I feel like it doesn t matter what growing method one uses, for as long as he/she is capable to keep the orchid happy. Good roots, leaves, psb, pest control, fertilizer that has both micro and macro nutrients. Take care!
Hi Ana Maria, so glad to see you here again. What a beautiful blooming. That lip is absolutely gorgeous. It is true that this orchid has a certain reputation but I also know that orchids have a.mind of their own. And yours is a surely a happy orchid. Thank you for sharing. I hope you are doing well ❤️😍
Hi, there! I think it is interesting to see how she develops in time. I already have her for quite a few years and learnt to read it. I think she is happy too. Take care!
Ooh!! She is beautiful 🤩 I just purchased a seedling of the aurea variety. My other dowiana is doing great in self watering ... hoping to get blooms next year 🤞🏼 so good to see you again ... I hope you are doing well 🥰
I live in Costa Rica where these are from. Bought 2 of these in bloom. It's been 3 years and though they get new growth they never bloom. So expensive and so frustrating!
Sun exposure - maximum, without burning. No rest. I just don't fertilize as much in winter. Maybe 50 ppm in winter. I do look at her. If shes strong in her growing, she receives the nutrients she needs.
Good morning Anamaria, I was wonder you say that you water once every 4 to 6 weeks, doesnt the water go bad, or the ph change? I dont understand I am afaird to leave the water so long. I also grow in the same way but I water every week i dump out the old and add the new water with the new fertilizer everytime. My ph is lower at around 5 or 5.5 beceause lecca raises it very fast. Thanks and have a great day.
Well, once the orchids adapt very very well to the SH, the water doesn t go bad as fast. At some point, inside the pot will be a stable microenviroment. My orchids did already adapt completly. About the ph, SH is somewhat different than SH with self watering. The PH will always change, but at a slower rate than in simple SH. Also, I find the orchds cope ok with the PH change. The PH changes as carbon dioxide gets out. It is a natural process which occurs in the wild as well. They are ok with it. I belive it is a mistake to try to create a perfect enivroment, stable, with all conditions met al all times.
@@frankgordonsmith4795 I have bought it about 5 years ago from a German nursery. I paid for it about 100 euros plus shipping 25 :D .... and it was 1-2 years from flowering size. They said. But for me, it took about 4 years to bloom. But it was pretty big, i remember she had about 9 psb, 1 direction of growth and an amazing root system. Anyway, ever since, she has growh much bigger and fatter psb. I remember I always paid special attention on her. At this point, she s the only one who gets watched over daily :)) Also, she never got repotting shock. I repotted her from bark to semi hydro only when I saw new roots growing actively. That would be my biggest advice for orchid growers.
I think the downfall of this species is the short lived flowers. To wait a year just to have this amazing flower for one week, isn't really worth it unless you're a fan of this species.
Well, first and for most, this is an expensive orchid. No one pays the money if it is not a fan. Second, if you ever get your nose on it, you will understand why it is worth the wait, and why amazing essences are kept in small bottles. Cheers!

I find this orchid quite easy to grow in semi hydro. Glad yours is doing well too. I'm doing great, just very busy with work. Take care! 🤗

Thanks! Nope, I just post as often as I can...and lately, I have been rather busy :*
Soooo beautiful, love it!! How much sun do you give it? Do you also keep it cool in winter?

How long do the flowers last?
