19:22 Swordfather’s lesson about art and the artist stands dramatically in contrast against Fowler who learned how to do all kinds of crazy arts and studies while bottled up in his castle but never for anything but to feed his conquest
The every bite monologue kind of comes out of nowhere, sneaking up on you through the usual villain mustache-twiddling to provide a sobering moment of horror. That and the negotiation with God speech are peak Kenneth Branaugh, animated or not. I honestly haven't been that gobsmacked by him since Henry V...
I will never get over how delightfully evil Abijah Fowler is. There really is no redeeming him and it's like he goes out of his way to make sure you never forget that he's dangerous.
It’s extra interesting that while we get his tragic backstory, it’s only used as a vehicle to drive home how fucking evil he is rather, than to make him sympathetic. All the evil we’ve seen from him is stuff he wants to do.
I'm kinda seeing a sort of "cliche" tragic backstory between the protagonist and antagonist. I'm saying between the two their origins starts with pain but the outcome between the two is with either good or bad purpose that motivates them. Sharing their backstory makes it understanding for audience to feel sympathetic and hope for characters to developed a change or stay on the path of their goal.
13:30 So when talking about making steel, Navi and Marketa are both right. In Japan (and some other places), the black-sand/iron-sand/satetsu is very high in iron content, and can be melted directly to make ingots. The sand is the ore, and it is prepared in a tub like bloomery called a Tatara. It takes roughly 9 pounds of sand and 11 pounds of charcoal to make a bit over 2 pounds of steel.
A couple plot holes: Mizu never grabbed the broken shards of her blade before jumping out the window with Taigen. Given that her clients book months in advance, Madame Kaji never bothered to tell Mizu to simply wait until Spring when Fowler would be stopping by on his way to the Shogun and thus be far more easy to kill.
I feel like the latter is less of a plot hole and more about the fact that Madame Kaji never expected Mizu to come back alive from her mission. Also I doubt Mizu would have the patience to wait until spring. Her entire character is like a runaway train of hate and rage. She would’ve gone to Fowler castle during winter even if she was given that advice just to kill him sooner
I feel like Fowler definitely sexed up Shindo. Some of their dialogue feels like a toxic romantic relationship. Shindo's thumb collection is for people who go against him and Fowler. Taking the thumb from a swordsman's dominant hand would make them effectively unable to fight. That is why it was a demand for Mizu fi she took teh pay off, she also had ot make herself effectively unable to ever enact direct violence against them. It is also kind of a nod towards the yakuza practice of losing a finger if you fail in your duty, at least that is how i took it. The yakuza structure themselves somewhat after samurai culture, and their origins are presumed to have started as masterless samurai who basically formed up into gangs. I don't think that has any actual grounding in history but it is part of the mythology built around them. Shindo and Fowler's little organization has the stink of a cartel or mob.
In fairness Akemi's dad did give her all the freedom she wanted and has been asking for the entire show and he's only a bad man now that we know Akemi's husband isn't a tyrant.
So much goodness in this, it's so nice. first, though, Navi ... I salute the outfit. Okay. The episode was really great! The prostitute that got killed was the one wearing the mask with Fowler; that's how she knew the plans. Fowler ate his sister; go back and watch it again. Taigen and Mizu has to happen at some point. Navi and Marketa's faces during Swordfather's speech is PRICELESS. The Swordfather hit everyone in the feels. Akemi is going dark. I think she's going to end up being the big bad, like 'Breaking Bad.' I think Ringo is going to be an even better Samurai than Mizu. He's positioned to be the darkhorse in the series. This is great! Can't wait to see your take on episode 8!
I believe Taigen, in some level knows Mizu is a girl, because if you remember, Taigen pulled down his scarf to reveal she had no Adam's Apple. While that's not a end all be all, they are in a time where an Adam's Apple is a *very* determined factor. So all of Mizu's features are starting to go through Taigen's mind...so ye that man's mind is going through it with Mizu. 😂
"Samurai" is an umbrella term, used much like "soldier" in that culture and time period. This term would have be applicable to anyone from bushi( warriors ) to servants in a particular household. The term "swordsman" has no historical context or meaning. It may help to understand that this show is a fantasy, and contains many ahistorical and anachronistic elements.
This show takes place in an( alternate fantastical ) early Edo, and historically, Tokugawa policy was inconsistent during this time. The first law imposing restrictions on commoners carrying weapons( that served to separate them from bushi ) was issued in 1648. Yet commoners in the seventeeth century were still permitted to carry long and short swords, while traveling, and even in urban areas.
The big irony, is that her she spend a lot of time talking about how she dont want to be married, she dont want to be the wife of some man she dont know, So her father was give her exacly that, a short wedding, kill the husband, set her free, and give her a lot of power. yes he get power too, but he is giving her exacly what she asked
You guys are being unfair with Akemi's father. The Shogun is a horible person that pratically EVERY lord is ready to betray. He married Akemi against her will, but that's the NORM for his time period, and it's only for a short period. Then they kill the Shogun AND the prince. Akemi inherits Japan and is single again.

@@josephine4s Yup, Like Fowler said, "I control my life now, Every bite."

Not Ashley Johnson, I believe that's Stephanie Hsu - Joy from Everything Everywhere All At Once - and the Madam is Ming-Na Wen
4:18 My face was exactly Marketa's. Suraj sometimes you're too good at making sounds. That was not needed, it was impressive, but not needed 😅😂

Fowler has a final 'word' of wisdom.
A 'Magic' word.
Can't wait for the reveal !!!
5:42 that John Cena edit was brilliant editor omg i'm 💀
11:57 she was the one wearing the long-nosed mask

Shindo doesn't like Fowler though

Fowler is to important to need a reservation, Madam would let him cut the line
Chris intros are goated

Watch interview with the vampire series

Idk why they call Mizu a samurai, that's a social class and not just being a swordsman.
Because only Samurai can carry katanas. So they just assume...

> Tofu is delicious
Tofu is bland by definition. It's supposed to absorb the taste of whatever you're cooking that tofu in.
I miss the old normies with everyone 😞
Did somebody say Lost??????
edit: Show watchers when Navi closed with hopefully Fowler dies. 😜
