It will be interesting to see how those locking teeth and enclosed button mechanisms last in the long-term, especially once they get dirt and water in them. I'm an avid Quadlock user, and one of the huge benefits is that the locking systems are very simple and robust - either a spring-loaded collar or lever. There's not much that can go wrong unless something actually snaps. I'd be worried about this enclosed Peak Designs system seizing up.
Imagine a world where you have a standard charging magnet for your phone/headunit/etc for your car/bike/tripod/house/etc. You wouldn't need any special case, it just works ... This product continues to spur my curiosity with how the new magnetized iPhones could integrate into car mounts and then will there will be an answer from other cell phone manufactures? I'd like to think that cell phone manufactures are the real drivers in the space, but it always seems like accessories in general are an after thought ... Glad to see Peak Designs make another solid products like this, although this is not for me, their camera mounts are totally worth the price! I would agree with you Russ, if they want to break into the cycling market they need to make an adapter for Garmin/Wahoo half-turn mounts!
Swift Industries "Peak Design" edition w/same connects between my camera (anchor links), and the Paloma bag would be a match made in heaven. 1 strap, camera inside, strap can be used for camera or bag - done and done.
It might not be for everyone but if you are using any kind of double-sided sticky mounting tape or pads. A little super glue goes a long way. Unless it's a very smooth surface even the 3m products have a tendency to let go at some point due to vibration.
I watched another review about this. I miss having my Lifeproof mount system, and this Peak Design looks like it will perform even better. Looking forward to it.
Looks to be pretty genius! Perhaps competition for Quad-lock? Russ, any thoughts on this vs. Quad-lock as far as how well attached the phone would stay attached on really rough terrain? Great review, thanks for making the viewership aware of this as well as the other interesting bikie products you encounter!
I can attest that the founder of Peak Design showed up to a conference in Monterey (pre-covid) on a gravel bike, sporting their prototype bike mount and case. Peter was kind enough to show me the prototype, and I was genuinely impressed with the mechanism, it was svelte and had a satisfying click, it felt very secure. I've owned a Quadlock, and used it on and off for years. In terms of the mechanism, it works well, it's very secure, but I'd say the advantage of PD's design is in how thin the profile of the case is. The Quadlock case is a bit chunkier in profile by nature of the mounting mechanism, I would occasionally find the imprint of the case's 'O' on my pants, but aside from that, it was very functional. I put in an order for the new Peak case, bike mount and tripod. I'm looking forward to seeing all the ways I implement the mounting system.
Did you ever have a problem with the Peak Design Universal Adapter coming off of the back of your phone case? PD states to use a on a phone case with a smooth service. Your case doesn't have a lot of surface space for the piece to attach to, but the video looks like it had a strong enough grip. Just curious how it held up over time.
Been a huge fan of Peak Design for years now. Backed their first ever KickStarter. I use their TechPouch as a GoPro bag. They just make solid stuff that looks as good as it peforms.
@@ChrisBundy17 I have some Surly Moloko bars, it has a hollow area just the right size for the bag. I just use some hook-and-loop straps to secure to the bar. When I need to park the bike I just take the bag with me and wear it with one of Peak Designs camera straps.
I've been a big fan of PD as well. For phone bike mounts I've been happily using Quad Lock for a number of years on several bikes. I am considering supporting the Peak Design Mobile Kickstarter to try their Universal mount for cycling. I'm interested in comparing the ease of install/removal between the PD product, and the Quick Lock mount.
yeah i used to use quadlock and liked it but ultimately i just went with a wahoo head unit as i ruined one phone with sweat.. this was back before the ipx ratings on phones became mainstream. And the next phone vibration over a year of commutes cracked the soldier point on the pcb and the screen went all wonky. i like aspects of this magnet design but since quadlock didnt use metal, nfc was never an issue so i would also be really interested in a side by side and what company is providing the best all around solution.
Thanks you Russ looks like a cool product I would be interested in this since I use my phone on my bike And not a dedicated bike computer thanks for the review .
Looks cool, hyped about those other attachments like the tripod as well. Tho is it not that easy to get the phone if somebody forcibly yank it off though?
Have had this for a few months. Before that had Quadlock for a few years. Key difference is PD has a much nicer case you won’t mind having the phone in all the time. quad lock is a good design and very secure, but the case is bulky, cumbersome, and ugly
I don't see a reason why a multi-million dollar company needs to go to kickstarter when they are perfectly financed to do as a regular product release.
The sandwich bag could work but it's ugly as hell. Waterproof cases don't exist for all phones. Technically I could make due by having the directions in my bag safe from the rain but products like this are all about convenience in the first place and convenience shouldn't include wrapping sandwich bags around your phones. I like this product but I'm not sold.
@@PathLessPedaledTV that can be swapped out for other colours, but you can rotate it so it sits under the phone and isn't visible anyway. I think the only thing I would change about my quadlock mount is to put a small pivot on the arm to be make it more adjustable so I can lower it and keep the screen level once its lowered but thats more an aero/ aesthetic thing for me. Though conversely it would mean you could raise it out of the way of any bar bags and keep it level too so it could be a bike packing thing too.

whoa whoa whoa! I need a review on that fork mounted bag!

I think you actually only have to push ONE of the buttons to release the bike-mount....which is nice !

Thanks for the nice review. Quick question - can you easily unmount the phone one handed?
yes
Great looking product 👌
Can you place the phone horizontally and vertically just by placing it on the mount? Does not require any tools to flip the mount itself?
Looks awesome!
Could you test on a ridged fork bike? Gravel bike?
Looks cool, hyped about those other attachments like the tripod as well. Tho is it not that easy to get the phone if somebody forcibly yank it off though?
It would be cool if it could pivot up to be able to use the phone as a camera while riding.
looks like a cool product. Will you let us know when we can buy it?
should've shown us the video from the iphone while riding the bike xD
whats the largest phone it can hold?

Does wireless charging work with the mount attached?
No
@@PathLessPedaledTV ouch

I want that
I am so in
No solution for when it rains? That's what is stopping me from buying something like that.
Phone is waterproof.
Haha you got burned
All phones are not waterproof
Then rubber band a sandwich bag around it. Or attach the mount to a case that is waterproof. I don't know why this is so difficult.

Hummm
Kind of cool but just not for me.
Crack @ 1:21 is telling me that this mount is not really that sturdy
That crack happened 8 months ago and completely unrelated to the mount.
big and ugly bike mount, quad lock has it beat
Isnt the quad lock the one with the big ass blue thing?
