- We may not have been big fans of the Prius before, but we are now. There’s lots to admire in the engineering and technology, if not the look of the car. And it’s hard not to be swayed by the numbers - it’s not cheap to buy, but it will be cheap to run. It’s comfortable, refined and easy to live with - and more than just a cabbies’ favourite now.

My wife and I just purchased a 2016 Prius Package 3 model and have had it just over one month. At age 74 it is our first new car ever and will be our last. We can't get over the mileage average of 62 mpg both city and hwy speeds combined. We are not the tree huger type of people. Just average people. We love our 2016 Prius.
Poor build quality?! I've sat in one and it was utterly solid, hard to take this guy seriously. Also, what's with all of the subjective judgements about looks. Why don't you focus on the function of the car, I can make up my own mind about the looks. Is it really necessary to call out Prius owners as smug!? They are cheap, reliable, economical cars. Nothing more.

I really like the appearance of this car, especially the back end. The tail lights are unique, front end looks good too...
I used to own a 2006 Prius.
Loved it for the gas mileage and reliability.
It had no issues getting 4.5L-5.L/100km with a heavy foot; me and the wife didn't baby it at all. I gave the car to my sister in law and it's now at 300,00+ km and still on the first hybrid and 12V battery. The car is still going strong. The only thing that were changed were the tires and the front pads and rotor. The rears are still original until now:)

+Cyrus McMillan Toyota's advertising is complete shit. They say hybrid cars are fun and exiting to drive, and they have these really weird characters driving them. All they really are, are very comforting and relaxing to drive after a long day at work or at long distances. Hybrid cars drive very differently, and I like it, but it won't ever put a smile on your face.

I agree the Prius is now a odd design, but i drew a picture of the 2016 model and my mind was changed forever. as i was drawing the Prius, i realized the body shape was for cutting through the wind to get both quicker speed and better mpg. i thought" wow what a cool design"
one sad thing tho is many people fail to see the how the 2016 Prius has own stile. its hard to think i have only seen 2 of them! :L

It looks totally fine for me, it doesn't have to be like every other car. I would never understand why prius get so much hate.
Just brought my 2016 home today and am loving it. My BMW driving/loving husband drove it and was wowed by the improvements over my 2009 Prius. I purchased the Four (not Touring) and the handling is excellent, mileage so far is at 56.5 mpg and the seats are very comfortable. I expect the reliability that Toyota has always offered. Giving my 2009 to our college-age son for the duration.

+kma198199 Actually, not getting up to 60mph fast enough, especially for freeway on ramps, can be dangerous. And with 70mph speed limits being the new normal especially so.

+netsrac cjf You answered your own question. YOU live in Germany with nice loooong smooth on ramps with plenty of merging space. Here in Washington D.C. you have a very short on ramp to get up to highway speeds, very hair raising. I hate getting stuck behind a Prius driver getting on the freeway because I could get rear-ended at any moment with how slow they are.
So the second argument against the new Prius is, that many have prejudices against the "type of people" who buy it??

When I first saw photos of the new Prius, I wasn't sold at all. But it's definitely a grower and you wouldn't mistake it for anything else, which is surely a good thing. Toyota are going full steam ahead with alternative technologies and that's refreshing to see, whatever you make of the styling.
What! This is the best looking Prius ever! It's not just a green eco conscious car for environmentalists snobs. Politically conservative business owners, who create jobs in the private sector and hire people, totally get the business sense of the Prius - you pay more up front to reduce operating costs over the long hall.
It's the first Prius that really drives like a regular car, especially the package with the 17" wheels.

I'm not entirely sure why so many people hate Toyota Prius. Is it because Jeremy Clarkson and other former Top Gear presenters said so? In my perspective, Prius will be a landmark car in history for many reasons. Being the first Hybrid to be mass produced is one thing. While Jeremy Clarkson said that the battery on the Prius is more environmentally UNfriendly because of all the seemingly sensible reasoning he had, why do you guys put that hate only to Prius? many other cars utilized hybrid technology since the first Prius. Now even the so-called "holy trinity", 3 "Hypercars" with hybrid technologies are praised more than anything and everyone kept quiet about how they mocked Hybrid not so long ago. Even someone in the comment below said "Japanese shit", why is it a shit when it actually sells? why is it a shit when Toyota made a history and you guys don't even have a life? If you said Prius is shit because it isn't as good as a Mclaren P1, for crying out loud, you can't even compare things correctly! Prius were designed for practicality, the original purpose of a vehicle, which in this case is a car. On the other hand, P1 is a recreation car, a car you use to enjoy thrill and pleasure of speed, on a track if possible. They are different!

I have to say, this is your best review yet. Accepting that there are two different kinds of people who either love or hate the prius and hybrid in general. Your review really suits the character of the car. Its a very comforting and relaxing car to drive, it won't ever put a smile on your face but it does have character. I always say: Let's take the Prius or, come pick me up with the Prius as if it is a person or something. It isn't the best thing to look at, but if you give if black rims and a nice paint job, it'll be a nice car to have. It is way too expensive though. Toyota's doing it wrong.

Prius is a numbers car, for numbers people. does it have electric only mode? how far does it go in that mode? any estimates on how much cheaper it is to run? how long/far ill need to run it to pay back the extra cost over a gasoline or diesel alternative? How much better is it than the previous generation? This review didn't deliver enough of what people interested in this car would want to know IMHO.

I love my Prius. Best decision I ever made. Would like another one but every year since the one I bought, haven't liked it. Might go take a look at this one though, the 90mpg is VERY tempting. I get about 54 in the one I have now. And for all those who says it's slow to hit 0-60? Did they slow it down in the newer Prius? I can hit 60 in about 5 seconds, WTF.........

Well, Prius is not for conventional people, so why would it need to look conventional. And as Clarkson says it beautiful and cool are two separate things.

P.S. I love it how he complains about build quality but actually talks about hardness of plastic... And actually disses old models even more. That's interesting as Prius is for a decade benchmark for quality and reliability. Also, I was driven in a lot of Prius taxis and I've never seen one that looks worn more than it is expected, or with something broken. Hard plastics on places like lower part of the doors (and most of the cabin) are usually made of hard plastic because a) you don't touch it, b) hard plastic is more resistable to wear.
What is your problem with headroom ?
I have seen a video in which he 2 guys as big as 2 m . sit in the back of the car with no problems at all !

Now one looking from the outside would expect that kind of spaciousness inside !
I honestly don't see the problem with the hard plastics because it is certainly chosen for its durability over esthetics and it is definitely not a reflection of its build quality.

ive always wondered why reviewers bitch about plastics in cars lol. Its a weird thing to focus on as if youre constantly going to be rubbing or touching let alone scratching the interior. Im guessing these people just dont know a whole lot about the cost of manufacturing and design intent. If you want a completely leather interior, youre really going to pay for it.
+hudson fox as the car gets older and the suspension and shocks wear out, cheap plastic interiors get noisy, thats probably why.
+Trab Ali the only noises i hear coming out of my 86 is a ton of wind noise. Quite honestly other than wind noise the only other thing that rattles is the seat bracket on my passenger when its empty. I dont see plastic noise being an issue the only major concern is maybe that plastic dashes do crack over time, also im not entirely sure why the mention of suspension.
well depends on what 86 you have, and depends on the quality of the plastic, japanese manufacturers are quite partial to the cheaper stuff.
Trab Ali 1987 toyota corolla GTS and it seems like 90% of the interior is plastic. luckily no cracks, i have to say if this stuff is as cheap as you say its been holding up pretty well maybe im just lucky.

Form follows function. The idea was MPG's. Aerodynamics. And that it does in perfection. I don't care what it looks like. I don't see it when I drive and I don't care what others think of me when I drive my 2018. Besides.....those that say it is ugly.......they have not looked in the mirror. I watch as pickup truck drivers at the gas pump spend almost a hundred dollars to fill their tanks and yet can't go half as far as I can on a fill up. I guess it is the..."Well I have to pay so much, why don't you?" syndrome. As far as being cheap.....NOT. At 33K US, it is not cheap. Comes with radar cruise, heads up display, power everything, auto dimming headlights and tons of other things that make this car actually a great car. That and I can haul so much stuff with it as it has so much room with the rear seats down.

I have a problem with today's hybrid and electric cars. during Project Gemini, astronauts were able to run their spacecraft for at least 4 days with 5 day capacity at 29 vdc while drawing 50 amps. What this meant that they could run maneuvering units, radar,environmental systems, communications and emergency backup subsystems for up to 5 days, continuous draw. In real road equivalency, the entire car should run 720 miles without needing a charge, when totally electric! Remember, this is Project Gemini and this battery system was designed and ready to go in 1964. So, what's the reason we don't have this available today? the batteries were no bigger as size and weight were critical.
As the Prius, I think that guys has improved in the way he talks and behaves. Still, both are not perfect and there are things to not like about them or that others do better but I'm quite happy the hate and dislikes of the video are mostly focused on the car, not the guy :P

I have a Prius, and while it is nice that it is green, I'm happier with the average 50 MPG that I get with it.
Toyota has nothing to be afraid of, Taxi companies aren't going to switch over to Kia or Hyundai anytime soon with their reliabilities.

The design reminds me of the Pontiac Aztec, but I somehow like it. The Prius is meant to be this way. If you want a Toyota Hybrid with normal body, you buy the Auris, the Yaris or the Rav4.

i have a toyota, and the hard plastics is better than the soft because is easier to clean, the sun doesn't crack the plastics.
Nice review, but... Did James try to imitate Jeremy Clarkson with that smug face thing? Don't try to do that, please. Also, as it has been mentioned, don't confuse build quality (which is generally not so bad in toyotas) for poor material quality (which is a common thing in toyotas). Editing done brilliantly, also nice to see good filming and audio quality.
As for the car... Spend an extra few grand and you are a happy owner of a Golf GTE, which is not only as efficient (if not more efficient) and about as practical (albeit smaller), but is also enjoyable to drive (something Prius will never have) and is much, much faster.
Despite all the petrol-heads bitching around I must say the car looks different than any other on the road nowadays. I love the weird angles and the car at first sight.

Coupled with the fact that oil gas prices are bottom low now, it's the worst time for this new gen to be introduced.
This guy needs to understand that poor ''build quality'' doesn't mean ''hard plastic''. The hard plastics are the interior design choices and how they're assembled together is the ''build''. You can say that the interior feels cheap because of the hard plastics but you can't say that its a poor build quality unless you see the plastic falling apart.
Also, why would you leave out the fact that some driving aids come standard in Toyotas?
disclaimer: I don't own a prius. i own a hyundai. I've test driven an older prius and I think no other manufacturer comes close to the efficiency of the prius as you can manage 60+mpg which is impossible in others.
Please don't confuse "luxury impressions" with "build quality". A Toyota has build quality, i.e. it uses rugged materials that last forever, even though they might feel hard to the touch, or sound hollow. Similar to Mercedes' approach from the 1950s to 1980s. Other companies that are favorites of car testers such as Audi or VW define build quality in a different manner: soft materials, doors that thunk pleasantly, tiny panel gaps. This is excellent in the show room, but after a few years things tend to fall apart. (And soft plastics are stupid anyway, because they emit gases that you inhale. Just check the residue on the interior windows of a new car after a few weeks).
