The scheme:
The number of loops must be divisible by 2.
In the example the number of loops are 20.
1 row - knit 1, *yarn over, knit two stitches together*, at the end of the row knit 1.
2 row - purl 1, *yarn over, purl two stitches together*, at the end of the row purl 1.
Repeat from the 1st row.
** - repeat loops specified between **.
The main rule when knitting openwork patterns: if there is a yarn over, then there must be loops that knit together. This is necessary so that the number of loops from row to row remains the same.
