Awesome job! I’m going to dig mine out of the attic this week & see what kind of shape it’s in after 30+ years. I’ll never forget when my dad gave it to me on my 14th bday
I’m not in the RC game anymore. But my dad and I were heavy into it in the late 80s and 90s. And this was the car to have. We smacked them with an RnD upgrade. Built custom modified bodies on them and painted them up like locals cars. Had so much fun racing them. We Raced everything. Miss my monster beetle. Lol. Thing was great. We also took an Ultima, modified it with black foot parts and raced that against traxxs stuff. Haha. Just reminiscing. Glad I found this. Really took me back.
Back in the early 90's when the RC10's came out. I bought two of them. One I raced, but the other one, I never built. The idea was it was going to be used for spare parts. Anyway, I have it complete, including the clear plastic body, decals, etc (The box has been opened). I also, have other parts including electronic speed control, servos, radio, charger etc. Basically, it has all been in storage for over 30 years. Just starting to collect everything now.
Great video! I've never had an RC10 before but these have been catching my attention more lately. I'd like to find one in decent shape that needs a good clean up.
Absolutely gorgeous restoration! One of my buddies gave me an RC-10 just like this, but it's in several pieces right now. He said that everything is there but I'll definitely be reviewing this video several times as soon as I'm ready to start working on it!
Looks great! I have an all original gold tub RC10, it even has the wire-wound mechanical speed control still. I plan on doing a nice restore to it. The body is not box art at all and there are a couple of minor scuffs on the bottom of the chassis, but it is 1st Gen. I bought it from a friend of mine years ago. He bought it, when he was in the military, when they first came out. He ran it on base a couple of times, then he got into trucks instead, hasn't been run since.
Great Restoration Ari!! Came out beautiful bud.. I'm actually in the process of doing the same thing. A-stamp Cadillac, Also have Andy Jacobson doing the body for me as well but a custom paint scheme. I'll check my stash of parts to see if I have any spare gear covers for you :)
Thanks for the comments and glad you enjoyed the video. I have another custom painted protect body by Andy. I decided to with the box art one for the video. He does such great work. yes, if you have a spare cover, please let me know. Thanks Chris.
I went to the graphite chassis. Dumped the dog bones and went with a Losi lnk rear. I races pro stock and modified. When I first got the gold chassis I sprayed it with oven cleaner and it turned silver. Looked awesome.
Came out awesome. I’m about to tear apart a CE to clean her up and paint up a body. Approx how long did you leave it out in the sun. Would a UV light work? What was the cream you used on the nose tubes. Thank you.
Thanks! Just so you know I covered the glass dish with clear plastic wrap. I know that wasn't in the video but it keeps the peroxide from evaporation. I had the parts in direct sunlight 1 whole day on each side. So after day 1 in the sun, I brought the glass tray into the garage at night. next day brought it back outside and flipped over pieces. put new clear plastic wrap over them and let them sit in the sun for the entire day. The polishing cream was autosol. Better then any other metal polishing cream I've used. The problem is that it comes from over seas. I ordered through amazon.
I just got a lexan figure. I will eventually be painting one. I had to wait for TBG as they were away on vacation for a while and their eBay shop was closed.
Hi Ari, super video, one question for you: do you know if hydrogen peroxide can remove dye color on the nylon plastics? ..or do you know any other product that does? Thx
I purchased the ultrasonic cleaner off of amazon and I use warm water with a squirt of Palmolive dish soap as a degreaser. Sometimes I'll spray simple green in with the water and soap depending on how dirty or greasy the parts are.
Beautiful car! I am planning a restoration of my Nikko Thunderbolt, my first RC car in the 80s that got me hooked on this great hobby. I have all the plastic parts, electronics is dead, motor might still be ok. Would hydrogen peroxide be useful on black plastic parts? Sorry for noob question...
Nope. Hydrogen Peroxide only for the RC10 cream plastic parts. For all my other restorations, for black plastic, I use a ultra sonic cleaner. cleans nicely but you will never get those black plastic parts looking shiny like out of the box when it was brand new. I've heard of people using a polish or wax to get them shiny but that seems messy and again I've never done that. Can't recommend it then.
the mark is an ejector pin mark, they normally stamp/form and cut the chassis in one operation. the part is formed to the die, some parts will really stick some less due to the variance of the thickness of the metal. Also use a drill to polish the rods and tubes
Thanks for the comment. This body was painted by "Andy" and not me.. But I did paint another body for the rerelease RC10 and did the same where I painted the window trim (black) from the outside. I used black Tamiya spray and then went over it with flat clear spray. But before I went over the black with flat clear, I waited 24 hours for the black to fully cure.
@@josereta2321 no sorry I don’t own one of those. They seem pretty cool and maybe in the future. However the channel is mostly vintage or retro (rereleases). I do have some modern badgers that me and the kids mess around with for fun but that’s not featured on my channel.
How long did you leave the parts in the bath? Its a bit cold and winter sun (low in the sky) right now, so I was thinking about putting the parts in my wifes tanning bed instead. Do you think that would work?
I can’t for sure if that would work but I have heard of people trying UV light which is what is found in tanning beds. Can’t say if it will work as good. I left my parts in for one day and then flipped parts over for another day. So basically 2 days.
Hey bud, where do you get parts for it. I have the cad data for the aluminum frame but looked you can buy for 60+. This one has been used and needs shocks as well as the steering knuckles and more. Also im looking to change out the motor and speed controller to brushless system. thanks in advance. PS: if there's parts that cant be bought i have a 3-D scanner and a CNC MILL to make any thing.
Here is a video I did for my RC10T. At one point in the video I go through a bunch of 3rd party companies that make parts for vintage RC10s. Finally, check team associated's website as they rereleased the RC10 for its 40 anniversary and may have posted parts to purchase. ruclips.net/video/ovLsD4IWrmk/видео.htmlsi=1ju_0_auZBSrjqvv
I use Palmolive dish soap, very little, and a spray or two of Simple Green right into the water. I run it through the ultra sonic cleaner 2x at 5 minute a pop. Then I rinse the parts off after as the water in the ultra sonic cleaner gets pretty dirty.
I still have my RC 10 that I bought new back in the early '90s. Runs great and pretty much mint. Original box and all da exrta parts. I don't run it much except to harass the dogs in the back yard every now and then.
FYI if you need peroxide for retro-brighting your parts just get salon 40 Volume clear (12.5% peroxide) the stuff used for hair brightening/highlighting. Just dilute it down for retro-brighting (Hydrogen peroxide from the store in normally 3%).
Thanks for the info. I've heard of people using the stronger peroxide and diluting it. I've used store bought peroxide (3%) 4 times now...It seemed to do the trick but I had to leave it out out for 2 days in the sun. I'm assuming the stronger it is the faster it will brighten. Might have to try it next time with the higher %. Thanks.
Can we celebrate Adam gase being fired as head coach and can you find an original jrx2 with the 5 link rear suspension. It would be a nice addition to the original rc10 and would give it a good race on the track. (With a good driver of course.)

I got an "A" stamped RC10. The nose was all scrapped up but the rest of the car was great. I bought an RC10 re-release nose for it. This was a bad idea. The gold parts do not match. The color is wrong. I finally found an original nose for my RC10 but it cost a lot of money. However, my RC10 is now correct. Just a heads-up on trying to restore an RC10.
Yes I'm very well aware of the different colors of gold used. Early RC10's "Edingers" were lighter gold. Later RC10's "Cadiliacs" were more orangey gold. Thats why I'm a little hesitant to mix and match. thanks for the comment.

EEEXCELLENT
Thanks Benny Boy!
Beautiful work.... question though, did you use any grease/lube or did you build it dry?
Dry. No grease and no shock oil. This is a shelf queen "trophy" car.
I have 3 of those, 2 A stamp and one A&L trailing arm conversion, I can't find enough parts to make them usable though.
With a little Ebay and forum surfing, I can usually find most parts for them. Sometimes the price sucks, but that's part of it.
There are plenty of RC10 groups on Facebook. Join and ask around. People are always willing to help out.
Wonderful vid, thanks for sharing. What liquid did you use in the ultra sonic cleaner? And where did you buy the ultra sonic cleaner? Cheers.

If you put the hinge pins and shock shafts in the dremel and spin in a rag w metal polish they come out perfect.

All the white parts to clean and degrease them. Then I put everything into hydrogen peroxide to whiten the parts up.

Will the hydroxine peroxide clean colored parts as well, or will it bleach them?
Not sure. I've only done the hydrogen peroxide to the plastic parts and never with paint on them. Sorry...
