Eric, I am a FORD man through and through! I have a 2005 F-150 with 281,000 on the odometer; very similar truck to yours. However, I have the 4.6L v-8 engine instead of the 5.4L. The 5.4L has an engineering flaw in that the internal oil ports are too small. It is not the end of the world, though. At some point in time you will start to hear a slight ticking in the engine, You will need to educate yourself ahead of time by watching the 20+ videos created by the guy in Chicago who runs the "Ford Tech Makuloco" channel. Keep up the 3,000 mile oil changes with the best synthetic oil you can find, switch to 5W-30 weight oil, and when you have the timing chain replaced, have your very excellent mechanic replace the oil pump with a Melling High Volume oil pump made specifically for this application. Other than the oil pump, use only Ford genuine parts. The replacement parts have all been significantly improved since 2004 to help mitigate the original engineering flaw. It is not the end of the world as long as you do not wait too long after first hearing the ticking and the engine blows. Gonna be OK!!!

I was going to post the same warning as I previously had a 04 F150, Ex Cab with 8' bed, (HD version - 7 lug wheels) and the engine was great until it wasn't. In addition to what the previous post mentioned, if you start experiencing stalling issues, try cleaning out your MAF before bringing to a mechanic/shop - Ford wanted to charge me $8500 (back in 2013) for a new motor since they couldn't figure out the MAF (they claimed it was the alternator and other nonsensical repairs, but Click and Clack nailed the issue on a radio broadcast).

He is “not that guy” and he has made it clear time after time, in different scenarios. All your well-intentioned suggestions are for him to keep this vehicle for a long-term, but in reality, what has he kept for a long time lately? Watch the Geo-tracker video again, you would not have a happier buyer, just like now. All the comments and jokes got to him and he got rid of it. Right now, he resents all of these comments on all the things these type of Fords have historically broken down because you’re not “helping”, you’re dragging him down from his high. This Ford, like my comment, will not last. He will block 1,000 more by the morrow.

The timing chain tensioners and guides are something that wears out on these 5.4's. Probably have been replaced once at some point with the mileage. Also change the plugs every 50 to 60,000 miles because they can get stuck and require thread inserts to repair. If you have repair records that would be nice. Or just go ahead and replace the plugs to be safe.
The Ford dealer I worked at had a 2005 F150 5.4 that I drove delivering parts. It got up 750,000 miles on it before being retired. Oil change every 3,000 miles which was around every three weeks. You did good Eric.

    Hi Eric 5.4 3V 2008 F150 55,000 original miles. Owner here.
at the time I was needing a truck for my two acre property and I was remodeling my house and I also was needed something to haul supplies with as well as pull my flatbed trailer and my camper.
I found my truck several states away, but have family in a position where I can fly for very cheap. I flew out to look at my truck they were asking 7,000 for it.
I thought to myself $7,000 dollars for a truck with 55,000 miles on it doesn’t sound too bad. Worst mistake I ever made. I will never own another 5.4 3V again I have spent over $3,400 trying to get the motor fixed and the phasers are still completely messed up. I have got to the point to where I just keep Lucas in it and I am physically exhausted with it. Your truck reminds me a lot of mine body is very clean transmission shifts strong, and from an outside perspective looks great, but oh boy your in for a hell of a ride. For a local driving vechile I think you did fine. $6500 for a high mileage truck in this day and time is not unusual. P.ease do not treat this vechile as disposable. Spend the $$$ for maintence and treat it gently. I personally would not trust a high mileage vechile for a long trip until you know it better. Just because it is high mileage I would have a breakdown plan as back up. You know things break without warning. This can be a long term vechile if you treat it right. Talk to your friend Robert about the care and feeding of this type of engine and what to watch out for. Also if/when something goes wrong (and it will) don't freak out. It is a high mileage vechile and they can always be suspect. Treat it the way CVK treats his white van.

Only reason I got rid of it is because someone ran a red light and totaled it. Bought my current one new in 2009. It’s an XLT with 200,000 miles on it and runs strong as ever. My 2015 Ford F-150 XLT has 123K miles on it. I just had it completely tuned up for the first time, redid my front end, and had the computer program updated. I spent $6,550 on all the parts and labor. Other than oil changes and 2 catalytic convertors that had to be replaced, I haven’t done anything else in 8 years of running it.
    Yes! I love my truck!!

What's the deal with all the "Van Life/Nomad/Van Dweller" channels that used to actually be about "living the VAN/NOMAD/traveling life?" It seems like many of them are no longer actually living the van life, or should I say, living the nomadic/traveling life. Maybe a lot of these so-called "nomadic/traveling/van life" channels should just change their names to something like "Static Fanatic", "Living Free Homestead Life", "Camper Shed/R.V. Kevin", etc., etc. Oh well, I guess it is what it is, and being a "true nomad/van dweller" isn't for everyone. I guess I just miss the good old days when my favorite "van life/nomadic/van dwellers" actually were nomadic & traveled around and I could live & travel with them, vicariously, through there you tube channels.

If it's the three valve they tend to have issues with valve clearance and end up kissing valves and killing engines and they are very sensitive. I hear that the two valve is a more or less good reliable engine. You're saying it's a 2004 so most likely it is the two valves so just keep up on your maintenance, your oil changes and any of the stuff in the valve train as needed. Eventually stuff in the valve train will need to be at least looked at. I forget if they're a chain drive or a belt for the valve train drive, but it doesn't hurt to have that stuff inspected every now and then if it's a belt, make sure to keep up with it. If it's a chain, make sure to have it inspected and have a shop on occasion. Double check the timing and make sure that the chain tensioner and chain tensioner guides are not worn out and in good shape.

Hi Eric, I see the negative comment, but as a previous owner of, literally the twin of your truck, the only thing to keep your eye on are the cam phazers and the timing chain. It a guarantee that yours at 190,000 has a little stretch it it but if you religiously monitor your oil level and changes, it can easily go 300,000 before major repairs. Mine was a work truck and I had to replace the motor at 355,000. Also the passenger side bank of the engine on those burn oil for some reason so the catalytic converters tend to clog up. I have owned 10+ F150s and while I do prefer the 5.0 Coyote I would take that one for the price every day.....Good purchase friend.

Full timing set (including cam phasers (OEM)) is a maintenance items on these engines as they get higher mileage. You will know its time when the engine starts getting noisy at idle when it is hot (and turning on the CEL with cam phaser codes). I think that year also has the terrible spark plugs that never come out in one piece, so, best to take it to someone when it comes time for new plugs.

Honestly I've been a mechanic for awhile and those are not the greatest but not the worst either lol. I would mainly worry about the trans and do a service on it asap and if you find a yellow plug in the pan it's never been serviced. The other major issue I've dealt with is it blowing the sparking plugs out then you have the basically retread the hole for another one. Overall it's clean and congrats on it. White trucks are the best it's hard to tell when it's dirty, my black car is a complete nightmare it's dirty right after I wash it lol. Just do a Trans service asap I'm telling you that's gunna be the first issue next might be a timing chain or something like that or the spark plug issue.
