i know this vid is 5 years old, im late to the game, but a french cleat on the back to attach it to your tractor/coop would eliminate the problem of the hinges on back. it would also make it easier to move or remove if you choose. Great work on all your designs Pete, appreciate you sharing them.
Well now I’m super excited. We just finished the 12x24 run using your design, but I hadn’t seen feeder ideas I liked. I’ve watched all the builds from buckets and trash cans to pvc pipe and it just wasn’t working for me. This feeder is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much for sharing this great build. I built 4 of these already, 2 for my brooder and 2 for my chicken wagon. 50lbs and 80lbs capacity. And if anyone's wondering, you can also use 1/2" plywood rather than 3/4" for the entire build. Works just as great and it's lighter.
Thanks a bunch for sharing your thought process when putting this together. I have the same problem with my chickens and I have tried the various hanging feeders and such but the feed waste is still too high for my liking so I will give your ideas a go. I do suspect that the access for the chickens would be some profile that only allows their heads to go through as you said, they tend to kick the food out if they can.
I'm so glad your video is still made available to view. I needed something geniously made to solve my future problems with chicken feeders ie, which one be the best performer and less hasell with time feeding every other day etc. My plan is to be homesteading by year 2021. Your video has inspired me to copy your method. It's very sufficient and I can extend its feeding capacity to a larger feeder per number of chickens. Thank you for your great idea. You are truly self made!
Thank you so much for this video!! I have literally been searching the web for something I liked and I woke up this morning and had this similar idea in my head but not quite near as good as yours .. Very much appreciate it thank you so much
I've just found your site lately. My daughter now has chickens and still learning what works best for them. So much of what you discuss is worth passing along to her. If she'll take the advice...LOL.
I am inspired. Love the fact that it holds an entire bag of feed. I'm building a new, bigger coop since I'm upping the flock from 2 to 15 so anything to ease the work load and make it a little more efficient. Thanks for the video! 👍
I have a metal feeder that is suppose to be waterproof but I want to build a shelter over it because mine is outside the coop. I'm going to TRY and make it like your design only like a lean to 3 sides and the hinged roof for easy filling. Thanks for posting
Yup. Thats exactly the kind of feeder I want to build. I have three large hens. Would like to be able to fill the feeder once a week, instead of every day.
Thanks for sharing Pete, now a copy (made of phenolic resin coated plywood for better grain slippin) feeds my chickens here in Hanau/Germany. Best regards. Peter
Thank you for great video.. made a bigger version for my newest hens (went 61" x 10" a d same height.. takes 2 50lbs bags with room to spare..would add pictures but doesn't allow me. Cheers from Canada
This is just about exactly what I plan on doing, I’ve already made something similar out of a 15 gallon round drum, I can put about a bag and a half in it and it last 2 weeks give or take, only problem is I want something more compact against the wall, I’ll make one like this one, probably only 8” out but 24” wide, maybe a center divider for support
Nice work there mate, the only issue I would maybe have with a bulk feeder like that is mice. I have found in the past with bulk feeders etc from my racing pigeons was it attracted mice . Your coop is off the ground so maybe no issue there, my coop sits on the ground so maybe a issue for me. Great job there the chooks love it ,they look very happy , thanks for sharing.
Thank you, I haven't had any mice or rat issues but like you said It's probably because it's off the ground. I feel sorry for any mouse that gets in that coop with all the chickens in there 😀
Mine is alot like yours, except mine I fill from outside and just the feeding area is inside. Also mine holds like a hundred pounds... I feed my layers a mix 50/50 of layer crumble 20% and cracked corn ....
To make your divider to prevent "digging and splashing" don't use plywood. Use Round Head Screws or Flat Head screws, 3 1/2" - 4" long. You want the thread-less shank to be just Under 2" long, and the rest threaded. Screw them in every 1 inch, starting 1/2" below the upper rim of the lower front plywood face. Drive the screws into the second panel, and continue on thru, until the head bottoms out on the front panel. The thread-less shank will span the feed opening, and the threaded part of the screws will extend inside of the feeder, which is no problem, since it's protected from the birds. Even better if the screw points just poke into the back wall, without going thru to the outside. The 1" spacing of the screw shanks is close enough to keep the chickens from splashing the feed, but wide enough to allow them to peck the grain. Simple, cheap, easy, and effective.
Father of Four Homestead Thanks, it shouldn't make them over eat because like my hanging feeder, the food was always available. But I'll keep an eye on them.
I had a Gravity Feeder. A 5 - 6 inch diameter PVC pipe, that held 50 lbs. The chickens ate ( and played with ) 2 -3 times as much feed. Sooo we put a gate with a timer on it.
I read somewhere in a chicken book do you know why most plastic feeders and waterers have red on them because chickens can see red and they will go to the item that they know there's water and feed just a little trivia love your videos just came on today May 6 2019 I started in the beginning of your first video so far I love them all thanks a lot
Great feeder ideal! Would a rooster with a large crown have any issues feeding? I went with a PVC tube and drilled out 2” holes. This wasn’t big enough for my rooster to reach in
Again - you've gone to a lot of work for your birds! Nice! If you're still monitoring messages - did it work out long run or become a nuisance for maintenance and cleaning? I'll be close to the woods - I don't want to attract rodents with trapped feed.
Nice explanation!! But just wondering what's wrong with a pvc feeder that will hold plenty of feed. Thought it'd also be easier to clean off poop etc compared to wood?!
Mullai Acres Homestead I use a PVC feeder and want to switch to this. The food doesn’t seem to flow very well inside the PVC. It gets stuck and I find myself moving it around so it fills the opening and so the chickens can get to it. Really frustrating stuff 😕
I was wandering if you are still satisfied with your feeder. Did you make any changes to it? I really need to make a better feeder. I’m wasting too much feed😔
How does this go for mice and rats? I have a metal sheet one the same and am very happy and got insured no problems with vermins. I like it but am in Australia!
Richard Habicher My chicken coop is built tight and the only way a mouse/rat is getting in there is through the chicken door, and if that happens, it'll be facing 15 chickens that will happily kill it 😁
Pete B. I have a mouseproblem here in The Netherlands. They dugg holes into my run (no other predator problem here in my town) and eat the food outof the chickenfeeder 😳 my chickens do not kill them....
Great design Pete I really like it I watched almost all your videos but I’m wondering I see you have designed this about two years ago any problem or is it working perfect just a little update I just started gardening and I’m about to get some chicken
Have you realized anything about it since you made it that you would change? Design flaws? Choke points? Or are you overall happy with it? I’m going to make one this weekend. Also, I’m thinking of painting it so it’s more durable. Thoughts? Thanks!!
How much would you charge for one of those. My neighbor has at the moment 12 chickens that i help with. It looks like an easy way to feed Also i noticed you had "dirt bath" Do you show how you made that?
Wow don't really know what to charge, you'll have to figure out the materials and time you put into it. The dirt bath is just a plastic tub you can buy at home depot the type you mix mortar with and add a bag of play sand and a cup of diatomaceous earth.
do you have a problem with it being so narrow? how many chickens can eat at one time - 3 or 4? I was thinking of building one like this but I was going to put a drop down lid to cover the feed at night.
also, if they flip feed out, you could run a piece of half round on the inside of the front so they can't scoop it out so easily. I'm interested to see how this works for you - please do a follow up in a year to let us know! and thanks for the great instructions on how you built your feeder.
They usually feed two or three at a time and use the feeder through out the day. I've had no problems with them throwing feed out at all, and the feeder has been working better then I had expected. There's really no need to put a cover over the feeder at night because they are roosting anyways so they don't feed out of it at night. Here's a video I did in September that shows a lot of the inside of the coop. ruclips.net/video/eTtcrVJme0s/видео.html
Would it be Better. to cut 3 inch off the top of your led . then put 3 inch strip you cut off . on the top of your feeder led opening . then hing your led off of the 3 inch strip . then you can mount your feeder flat to the wall . & when you open your led to put your feed in it . you can let your led lay on the wall & it will stay open till you close it .
I was going to suggest the same thing, but had to scroll all the way down to see if it had already been posted! Glad I did so....that way I don't look like a redundancy idiot.
I don't get mice in the coop because it's sealed up pretty good and I'm sure the chickens would kill them but I do get ants sometime. So I do spray around the outside of the coop and under the coop on the wood so when the ants crawl over it, they die.
This is exactly what I have been wanting to build for our layers but haven’t been able to find any very good instructions. Thanks for a great video!
I like the design !!
Should I ever build something like it, I would fit it into the wall and fill it from the outside.
Thank You !!

Great job. You had me at, “I usually don’t build with plans”.

Yeah same here!
Hi Pete, Like your feeder. Nice job, too. I'll build from your Idea .Birds are wasting to much feed with these commercial ones. Thanks.

With all respect, french cleat mounting of your great feeder is all I will modify for my application. Thanks for sharing your idea.
👍
Thanks for sharing! I'm building one just like this for my pigeons
Pete the whole outfit is built very nice, I like it!
Thank you
Nice Pete. Your chickens are going to have it made in the shade!!
That's for sure, Thank you 😃
Thank you so much best feeder I have ever had

Thanks Pete for the idea. I believe I might make one twice as wide & half as tall to give more birds space at the trough.
Good idea to make it thinner and taller to give them more room. 👍
Thanks for the idea bro. I like it more than the PVC way.. like this we can have wat more feed in it..
👍
Thanks my friend, im from Malaysia. I will follow your idea to build my chicken feeder
Great 👍
great job! Im gona make one backwards and hang it on the outside of my coop lol love your coop and run!
Thank you 👍
Great design. Thank for sharing.
Thank you 👍
Good stuff. Looks tight enough that they won't sling the food everywhere.
Thanks, yeah it's been working out better then I had expected and no food on the floor.
Mine is alot like yours, except mine I fill from outside and just the feeding area is inside. Also mine holds like a hundred pounds... I feed my layers a mix 50/50 of layer crumble 20% and cracked corn ....
Hello. ru able to share your design?
Thanks so much for this video . Im.new to my chickens and have 5 and man do they waste alot. This will be my husbands project this week for my girls
Awesome 👍
Great video, clean, simple and very effective feeder. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you 👍
Nice idea !!
what a nice workshop
Thank you
Great Idea.Thank you.
👍
I love the feeder!!! That's great.
Thank you
Best design ever.
Thank you, it's been working flawlessly too with pellets and or crumbles.
Smart man and smart chickens. IIIII LIKE IT.
Patric Bear Thank you 👍
very cool, Good Job
Nice!!!!! I also made a new feeded..i did mine with the set in pvc elbows.....mine were wasting so much feed.
Thanks, that's what I was worried about. But I'm glad they don't wast any feed with this feeder.
I like the design I just wonder if it enables the chickens to over eat though.
Father of Four Homestead Thanks, it shouldn't make them over eat because like my hanging feeder, the food was always available. But I'll keep an eye on them.
Great feeder
👍
Just saw this project. Looks great! Did your chickens end up roosting on that back filler board?
Thanks, the chickens don't get on it at all and the feeder is working great.
Put a slick metal on lid they slide off of it unable to purch on lid
Nice coup! I love the swings for the chickens :)
Andrea Herrema Thanks, they just started using the swings the other day ☺
I had a Gravity Feeder. A 5 - 6 inch diameter PVC pipe, that held 50 lbs. The chickens ate ( and played with ) 2 -3 times as much feed. Sooo we put a gate with a timer on it.
👍
I like, for me is the best chicken feeder thanks.
Thank you 🙂
gracias me sirvio mucho! desde argentina
eso es bueno. Funciona muy bien y todavía lo uso para mi alimentador de pollo principal
You need brushes at the front to control grain outlet.
I read somewhere in a chicken book do you know why most plastic feeders and waterers have red on them because chickens can see red and they will go to the item that they know there's water and feed just a little trivia love your videos just came on today May 6 2019 I started in the beginning of your first video so far I love them all thanks a lot

Sir Can you make a diy video of this feeder how did you made it👍
best design
Thanks
Nice design! Thanks for sharing.

Again - you've gone to a lot of work for your birds! Nice!
If you're still monitoring messages - did it work out long run or become a nuisance for maintenance and cleaning? I'll be close to the woods - I don't want to attract rodents with trapped feed.
I still use it today and works great. But this feeder stays in the coop so rodents can't get to it because my coop is 2ft off the ground.
@@petebeasttexashomesteading I looks robust enough to last a long time yet!
Thanks!
A tin or plastic cover on your lid will reduce the hen's traction and slide them off to reduce their roosting on top.
Nice explanation!! But just wondering what's wrong with a pvc feeder that will hold plenty of feed. Thought it'd also be easier to clean off poop etc compared to wood?!
Mullai Acres Homestead Nothing wrong with the pvc feeders. I just wanted something to fit in that corner that would hold an entire bag of feed.
Mullai Acres Homestead I use a PVC feeder and want to switch to this. The food doesn’t seem to flow very well inside the PVC. It gets stuck and I find myself moving it around so it fills the opening and so the chickens can get to it. Really frustrating stuff 😕
Do mice get up in there?
Not in my coop, it's 2ft off the ground and the chicken run is screened up tight.
So how is it working as far as the chickens making a mess throwing the food all over the place. I would like to make a larger version.
It works perfectly, I'm really happy with it and no mess.
Thanks Pete😇
@@petebeasttexashomesteading Thanks Pete, I will start on this project today💃
👍
I was wandering if you are still satisfied with your feeder. Did you make any changes to it? I really need to make a better feeder. I’m wasting too much feed😔
This feeder works great and it's my chickens main feeder.
Thanks for sharing. I think you could have made it higher, and instead of hinged top maybe a rest on cover. Still love the idea.
Thank you
Well done.
How does this go for mice and rats? I have a metal sheet one the same and am very happy and got insured no problems with vermins. I like it but am in Australia!

I loooooooove your chsnnel😍😉

Great design Pete I really like it I watched almost all your videos but I’m wondering I see you have designed this about two years ago any problem or is it working perfect just a little update I just started gardening and I’m about to get some chicken
Thank you, this feeder works great and is their primary feeder.
how did u use the T bracket on the left side it was a little tight
I screwed the feeder on the left side directly to the 2x4 on the wall.
Have you realized anything about it since you made it that you would change? Design flaws? Choke points? Or are you overall happy with it? I’m going to make one this weekend. Also, I’m thinking of painting it so it’s more durable. Thoughts? Thanks!!
It's been working flawlessly and I wouldn't change a thing. Painting it is up to you but mine still looks great, just dusty. 🙂
Pete B. Glad to hear it! Thanks! 🙂
How much would you charge for one of those. My neighbor has at the moment 12 chickens that i help with.

Yes that would work too.
Did you think about hanging the feeder using a French cleat
Great idea! If I have to take it out for what ever reason, I'll install that system.
I was going to suggest the same thing, but had to scroll all the way down to see if it had already been posted! Glad I did so....that way I don't look like a redundancy idiot.
Nice job thanks :)
👍
thank you, I made a smaller version and made it out of cardboard.
Thats not going to last :/
I love the look of that type of feeder but decided not to build it because I figured it would be too easy for bugs and mice to get in.
I don't get mice in the coop because it's sealed up pretty good and I'm sure the chickens would kill them but I do get ants sometime. So I do spray around the outside of the coop and under the coop on the wood so when the ants crawl over it, they die.
Nice feeder. Do mice and rats get into it?
Thanks, my coop and run are pretty mouse and rat proof so they don't get in there.
@@petebeasttexashomesteading thx for the reply. Going to get my first chickens this spring, so watching a lot videos.
Thanks for uploading a useful video, however, I cant see how this design will prevent rodents from enjoying chook food.
Rodents don't get into my coop because it's two feet off the ground and 1/2 inch hardware cloth all around the coop and run.
Grate idea but at $35 a sheet I'll just get an extra feeder from the store
The things that you build are priceless
next time make the video actually making the feeder or any you building,
