After hours of work hard in the sun a body needs more than just water to rehydrate. Before high-fructose corn syrup, artificial dyes and flavors and aluminum cans were ever invented energy drinks were popular. You just had to make them at home!
They were inexpensive, delicious and REALLY good at replenishing the sodium/potassium balance in cells so that they can properly re-hydrate. This amazing drink was called by many different names, often switchel or haymaker’s punch.
In this video Carolyn shows you how to make a very simple version of this original sports drink, switchel.
You’ll feel so much better about what your family is drinking after that summer soccer game or after you’ve put in a day of hard work together in the garden. And best yet switchel has been known to help with digestion, skin problems, weight issues and lack of energy... all from an inexpensive and delicious drink!

Here in Arabia, we use something similar. but instead of vinegar we add natural lemon juice to mix of honey and ginger. Specially in winter, it's good for immune system.

You might want to try _mild_ molasses (not black strap which is the most common, its too bitter). Molasses is extremely high in electrolytes which is amazing for preventing cramps as well as dehydrating athletes (plenty of dancers work out as hard as those at the gym). I try to get molasses in me in the morning to prevent cramps, usually in my coffee or tea, and then at night i like to drink something like this. You wouldnt believe the difference a few tablespoons of molasses has a day, 1 tablespoon has around 5% of the potassium you need in a day and nearly 10% of the magnesium, so if you have 4 tablespoons a day that boosts your magnesium and potassium intake by about 40% and 20% respectively. That's more than most sports drinks, most of which have about as much electrolytes in 1 bottle as you'd get in 1 tablespoon of molasses.
Honey tastes better and has some health benefits but it lacks all those electrolytes. Look here for an example of all the nutrients:

This would be amazing with some elderberry juice mixed in during the winter for an immune boosting drink. For people who don't like such a strong molasses flavor you can split it with brown sugar and or honey. I do a water kefir that has tons of probiotics, but this would be great all mixed together for even more probiotics

Cornish games might work. I was at a friend's place and he told me to watch him.feed them. They were all ligned up sitting and facing the same direction. When he fed them they got up, ate and then went back to exactly what the were doing before. They were lined up like those marshmallow peeps. I told him to get them while they were young and never turn his back on them. Lol

We love haymaker's punch! I first heard about it from Stacy of "Doug and Stacy". I wrote down her recipe and have been using a version of that. I like the idea of adding salt. I always thought I was missing something. The recipe that I use has a few tablespoons (eye-ball measuring ;-) ) of lemon juice, about a tbl of fresh ginger or a couple tsp. powdered, 1/3 cup each acv and honey, and enough water to equal 1/2 gal. My hubby and children ask for it when it's hot outside! I drank it last week to help with a cold. Great stuff! I knew about adding maple syrup or honey, but had never thought of sorghum or molasses. Thanks for sharing this video! =)

I feel like I remember sweetened ginger water being talked about in one of the Little House books series. Maybe it was in The Long Winter book near the beginning when Laura is in the field all day working with Pa to harvest the hay. Ma sends the special water because the added ingredients made it such that they could drink deeply without getting nauseous and sustain the hard work in the heat. Anyone remember this?

Hi - yeah, I'm near 60, and my mom used to make this when I was a kid.
One thing I noticed, having used apple cider vinegar to combat inflammation, you didn't shake the vinegar to get "the mother", all those cloudy bits at the bottom, mixed in. That's where all the probiotics, antioxidants, and all those things you were touting are resting. Without a good hard shake, your switchel won't have any of the qualities you described.
I scrolled back a ways, no where near the almost 300 comments, and didn't see anyone recently mention this. If y'all are gonna make this, be sure to give your apple cider vinegar a good, hard shake!

I noticed that, too! Always give ACV a good shake to get the "mother" on the bottom of the bottle.

I’ve never heard of Switchel before but I’ll definitely have a go, I have both maple syrup and apple juice to hand so that will be my first flavour combo. Thank you as ever Carolyn for taking me along the path of healthy eating and drinking!

Great recipie carroline, thank you! We like to make nettle and all-heal (Prunella vulgaris) tea to add. The all-heal really helps your body regulate tempurature. It was a life savor for Dave last summer as he packed tires for the earthship.

I make something similar with an herbal tea base (any flavor) and stevia, and use about a fourth cup of Bragg's vinegar. It is so good!

I've been known to add just a touch of balsamic vinegar in addition to cider vinegar. I think this smooths out the cider vinegar tang. Cheers!

They used to call it "haymaker's punch" for that reason, as the people working in the plantations and big farms would drink this while in the fields.

I LOVE Switchel! It's so refreshing! I love muddling some fresh berries in the bottom first, then adding the sweetener, ginger, and ACV, it's so good!
I have a question about your tea kettle, it is new or an antique one? I just love it and would love to know where to get one! It looks like an antique cast iron gatemarked one, but the hardware looks new. I would love to know! Thanks in advance!

Someone asked about using stevia... here was my reply:
I think she uses these alternatives to sugar for the trace mineral content they bring. The sorghum syrup is really niche thing ... but molasses is not ... so stevia would bring sweetness but not the mineral content of the others ... perhaps use a small bit of "cone" sugar, brown sugar, or light molasses or that "raw" sugar ... for the slight mineral content they have ... and the stevia until you get the flavor to your liking ... but really the reason to make this with these sugar alternatives is for the mineral and vitamin content they bring to really make this an old fashioned energy drink.

Staring at the Black Sun Trying to SEE THE LIGHT But sugar is very bad. Maybe not when I was a kid 40’s 50,s but we consume so much more now that it has become poison. Every little bit you can get rid of the healthier you become. The best non sugar sugar is Monk Fruit no after taste all natural. Get it at Amazon.

Will be making this today!!!! I also just watched your comfrey for bones video. I plan to grow my own but until I do I ordered some organic loose leaf comfrey. My husband has a bulging disc in his lower back and I'm desperate to help ease his pain. Here's hoping it helps him even a tiny bit. Thank you for sharing such beautiful knowledge to those of us starving for simplicity and independence.

Thank you. We spent Sunday at the ER trying to figure out why he was hurting so bad. He's only 28 and waaaay to young to have these sorts of issues. What have you found to help with your pain? I've heard no amount of surgery eases the pain.

I have a bulging disc in my lower back. Physical therapy really helped, as do the exercises she gave me to do. Proper body mechanics and careful with lifting also helps. A chiropractor also helps. Best wishes!

I am a success story for that surgery. At the age of 36, I had two bulging discs and was in severe pain because it was pinching my sciatic nerve as well. I had the surgery to "trim and seal" them. It worked completely for me. Instantly the pain was gone and as long as I stretch each morning ( 5 slow toe touches held for 10 seconds) and keep to my lifting limit of 15 pounds, I would never know I even had a problem. (Those times I that I lift heavy things, I feel my back tighten and spasm).

Aquatic physical therapy seems to help the most. It keeps me flexible and my core strong.

This would definitely help with digestive issues. I have Sibo and take a cocktail of olive oil, ACV, bitters and Himalayan salt in the morning and it makes me feel better plus keeps me going all day while I practice intermittent fasting.
