Those old timers sure knew how to work. I honestly believe between their diet's and all the hard work is the reason so many were so healthy. The best thing you can do for your kids and grand kids is to teach them hard work and to live a self sufficient lifestyle.
My neighbor is 99! She was born in 1922 and can still drive and do things on her own. She use to farm with her late husband, she grew up on farm, killed her own chickens no problem lol! She’s an amazing lady and she told me during the depression years her family grew strawberries and sold them. She said they survived on those.
Absolutely, for one thing they ate a lot better diet than we do without all the processed foods and they weren't drinking all the pop and other crap that we drink and they weren't getting any vitamin D deficiency cuz they actually spent most of the time out in the sun and with all the hard work they got plenty of exercise and all of these things we are lacking nowadays.
@@scottbrown5587 Agreed. I truly believe its our diet and lifestyle that perhaps are causing all the ailments and cancers we see today. I've wondered what the antibiotics and hormones that are pumped into livestock are doing to us? All this processed/packaged stuff with ingredients we can't pronounce and high fructose corn syrup cant be good. The wholesome goodness of natural sustenance and physical activity can't be beat. Stay healthy my friend.
@@jimb3093 Whoa there, cowboy. Now those pioneer people may have had good exercise and fresh food and sun, BUT all of that can't stop genetic diseases or viruses or bacterial infections from happening. Not to mention the vast array of mental illnesses that too many peoplen handwaved away using faulty religious logic. Sure, our current sedentary lifestyle may not be the best, but we still have sun, good food, and the ability to exercise. But now, we have more modern medicine and surgery techniques to help us do these things longer. More humans are living longer and less babies are dying because of this. Don't abuse those rose colored past glasses now! :)
One cannot teach another who Does NOT WANT to learn ...
Toughness is a part of that generation for sure. My grandma worked the cotton field and garden everyday keeping 7 kids fed while grandpa worked off the farm to make ends meet.
YEA for your Dad! I'm 74 and still do square bales. My wife drives for me to load . I load and unload. My children fuss at me
about doing hay. they offer to help but I won't let them. I have to do it at my own pace, I said I can't keep up with them and they said they can' keep up with me. Scott and Sandra, Greenbrier, Arkansas
Good for you! You didn't chicken out and went to round bales. Greetings from "Mayberry" NC.
Keeps you healthy!
You sound like my Pops who, at 74, is STILL going up Ladders and Building, he's a Trained Caroenter/Aircraft Fitter lol xxx

Your father is SO PRECIOUS!! He brings joy to my heart ❤ I have 92 &96 yr old clients that I see every Wednesday
..last week we were sitting outside visiting before I started my work and there was an airplane above. She proceeds to tell me how they used to have a plane and he taught her how to fly!! Said she had some trouble with the landing, but no problem on takeoff or getting above the clouds and flying!! I said, lady! I've been coming here every Wednesday for over THREE YEARS and you are just now telling me this interesting story?!? Most ladies didn't do that sort of thing. These old folks have so much left in them it breaks my heart when they get treated poorly. Also, I'm glad you help instead of doing it for him. That is one thing, if they want to do it I always let them, but I'm there on standby in case they need me. 🥰
As the 'Widow Short' at a living history museum, I was responsible for feeding and medically caring for the reenactors. My favorite drink to revive over heated soldiers was Haymakers Switzel. Similar to your recipe but using Honey for sweetness, and energy. It is more easily digested, sugar can cause stomach upset. Natural apple cider provides electrolytes, and ginger settles the stomach preventing nausea. I use fresh grated ginger , it is more effective. To add flavor, I add the juice of fresh crushed berries . Taken room temperature, ( cold will cause the stomach muscles to cramp) this concoction can get a collapsed soldier on his feet in 30 minutes. (Wneck and
The original reciept was = 1 Gallon boiled water (of course), 1 Cup Apple cider vinegar, 1 cup honey, 1 T grated ginger, and 1 C berry juice. (Without the berry juice it has a lemony tang).
Thanks for sharing. Does this recipe have a shelf life? Thank you for your time.
Beet juice is full of nucleic acids, and carrot juice both add nice depth of flavour.
@@deborahsantiago7642 I have never had it last long enough to store. Being room temp and the person drinking it is usually dehydrated, it is consumed quickly. I mix it up on site and set it on a table under a tree. Reenactors walk by and ask for Gatoraid, and I say , nope, not authentic, tastes different but refreshing, try it, and they come back for more.
@@tada6672 Never tried that, berry juice is easier to find, or extract . The reenactors are used to sweet drinks and the flavor of berries (blackberries are the favorite also cherry juice) encourages them to drink it.
@@sandrashort1221 Well everybody planted " sugar beets" and pickled them. As you know when pickling you use salt, vinegar and a little sugar. Just as you can swig some pickle juice, ( great for hangovers or dehydration) beet juice works great, with the added bonus of nucleic acid , which helps in the repairs damaged cells. They would have had lots of jars of beets right next to the pickles, corn relish, spicy ginger carrots( my favorite) . I'm an old Lady ,and an old nurse, used to live on a farm. We canned and pickled EVERYTHING. Applesause , use that instead of oil in your baking, never have a dry crumb! Tapped our own maple trees and boiled down the syrup. That , my dear is Hard work! Any way just offering a little tweak.
And if your stuck in the bush., have a fever, pain, Strip some birch bark and boil it into a tea, it is aspirin! Better with honey.
Our family recipe also includes salt as well since heavy sweating and exertion depletes sodium. The salt also seems to balance and cause the other flavors to bloom and blend well, and is quenching to the dusty throat that comes with haying, potato harvest etc.
My mom used to make us drink a glass of apple cider with ginger tea, over ice, fill with water. If they had it, a comb on honey was added. MMMMMMMM!
Growing up I often stayed summers with my grandparents on the rez. My grandfather was NDN and my grandmother was German. She made her own sauerkraut in an pottery butter churn and during the summer when us kids were hot and thirsty she would fix us a glass of cold kraut juice. That was the best thirst quencher I've ever drank. I'm 68 years old so I'm a grandfather now and although I don't make my own sauerkraut I'll still pour the juice out of a can over ice and drink it when I get hot in the summer. It's not nearly as good as my grandmother's but it is still a good thirst quencher.
That sounds amazing I'm going to try that thanks for sharing sir!
Old timers heated up the ingredients to dissolve everything together and kept it in the syrup stage to just before serving where they mixed it in a large jug of ice cold spring water. Also, honey was mostly used as the sweetener.
As a firefighter we keep those sport drinks (Gatorade etc) on our rescue to rehydrate with but to be honest they are just terrible. They leave your mouth parched due to the high salt content and you end up going and looking for water anyway. Nothing worse than fighting a fire with your stomach full of fluid so I stay away from them.
While working in the bush I drink this though we don’t call it Haymakers since we all learned it from the Finnish loggers that lived here last Century. It is an awesome drink and works amazing. Wish we could keep it on our Rescue.
Great info..
Thus is a really good jar of ingredients.
Many people today do not realize just how good Apple Cider Vinegar is for them..
In the times of Our Pioneers..
Vinegar was the Medicine that would kill germs..
When the Old Town Doctor would visit a home and realize that family had no Vinegar put up from harvest..
He worried..
Because he knew it would be a winter of sickness.
Apple Cider Vinegar with the mother is blessing.
Those little piece of Apple will travel through your arteries..
As it does, those pieces will grab small particles of Plaque and it will be sent to your urinary track where you will pass it out..
I strongly believe in it and many other old remedies.
Thank you for sharing your all natural great replenishment drink..
You just got a new subscriber..
Keep up the great info..
Videos like this is very important..
Yes I am Old Fashion and I am Proud of it..
As you have stated, working in the sun can cause dehydration which causes the blood vessels to constrict and the blood to thicken. Ginger helps with digestion to get all the drinks ingredients into the body and to open the blood vessels to allow the blood to get to exhausted muscles.
Thanks for the recipe. It is so humid this summer and I'm in my 60s, and I sweat gallons. That's why real brewed ginger ale is good for you. Europeans say not to drink very cold drinks. Best to your dad. Greetings from "Mayberry" NC.
So nice to watch such a wholesome video. I drank apple cider vinegar with honey in water during my pregnancies for easier deliveries. Read about it in Vermont Folk Medicine years ago. I still put vinegar in my water everyday.
Hats off to your hard working dad. I am going to try this drink.
Man. I cant get enough of your channel. I love the old homesteaders recipes!
Remarkable! There's a Com. Sgt. Maj. that pulled a big stump out of the ground, on his own. Did I mention, he'd already served for over 30 years.
This was perfect!! I’m cooking in a Historically House at our fair next week and looking for some beverages to demonstrate. EXCELLENT job!!! Thanks SO much!!
New subscriber but love the content. Lost a lot of my grandma's recipes & so glad to have found this. I definitely remember drinking this when we bailed square bails back in the '60's. You must be smart & good bc my mothers family were Norris's. 😃
My 2 year old loves this! First time I made was after watching this video. I’m on the fence, but love the health benefits. Next batch I’ll use my own maple syrup instead of honey.
Your Dad is amazing. I make ACV tonic with raw honey never thought about adding ginger. TFS
New subscriber. So glad to have found your channel. I have learned so much. I remember reading all the Laura Ingalls Wilder books as a child. 😊 Many blessings to you and everyone who watches this channel.
Welcome to an awesome lady's yt channel. I been watching her for a little over a year. She is such a wealth of knowledge. Blessings to you as well. 😊
Girlll hay stacking is so much easier if you grab both strings, use your top hand to pull the bake up and hip check it into place. That’s how I do it anyways for the lower bales.
Thank you Melissa - I have been having cramping etc. after working in the South Carolina heat and humidity and every year notice that water doesn't help rehydrate - going to try this solution this coming weekend!
I have been making this punch for a few months. Love it. Yours is similar but I strongly recommend using local honey as sweetener
I use sorghum syrup as my sweetener. I’ve made it with black strap molasses, Honey, and maple syrup. Good stuff.
Just made a batch - had everything but the ginger powder so picked up some from bulk spices at my grocery. Excellent!
I'm still drinking a quart every 3 or 4 days. The vinegar is supposed to be good for the heart and the ginger powder for health too. I saw a "health drink" the other day that for $7.00/pint, they added cayenne pepper to Switchel. I might try that as well. Thanks for the recipe! :^)
I learned to make switched from John Townsend's channel, his recipe is from colonial times and uses either lemon juice or vinegar. It's one of my favorite drinks.
Yes, I have to check out Townsends. He has a great channel.
Another good home made cool down drink is pineapple juice (unsweetend), lemon juice and ginger. mix to taste. I call it kickapoo joy juice.
Great recipe! Really enjoyed hearing about your dad's 84th birthday. I hope he's doing well and celebrated his 85th just as he pleased! 😊
I need to get to making this asap thank you Melissa 🥰
I make Switchel all the time in the Summer nothing quenches the thirst better. I have tried all kinds of different vinegars, various molasses types etc.
watching this made me feel good. I needed that
Here in south TX just mowing our 2 acer front lawn means three changes of clothes after being soaked with perspiration. Without replacing the potassium and magnesium you can get some serious leg cramps. Anyone even thinking of hard times ahead needs to be aware of this and keep a supply to make plenty of this sort of drink.
I love the reference to little house. Loved the books and have seen all the shows…lol…Ty for sharing
I’m going to try this with my kombucha vinegar! Thank you 😊!
I literally just read about this in "the Long Winter" on Friday and was intrigued.
I've seen several variations of this and some also add oatmeal. I've never tried it yet, but I will. I'll try it both ways; with and without the oatmeal. Thanks!
Your the best. Great teaching skills.
My friend taught me how to make homemade ice tea. I can see how this is a variation of it. Definitely going to try this!
Hi Melissa, isay good recipe for a very healthy drink which has a lot of good health values with the variety of ingredients it has, thank you for bringing this video on,lovin’it,love Denny😘🙏🦋
Great video! I take a shot of apple cider vinegar(diluted of course) everyday for health benefits, so this drink is great!
Thanks for the new ‘old’ idea for refreshment!
I gotta try this. Im a fan of dill pickle juice myself, but this looks interesting. Thanks for the video.
So knowledgeable the old fashion way love to watch your videos thankx
Great video as always. I just made some pineapple vinegar, so I think I'll try this recipe with that and some honey to keep a lighter color to the drink. Thanks for sharing!!
That sounds delicious, thanks for sharing and reminding us of how smart our ancestors were.
Thanks, I am inspired to try this!
Great recipe, black strap molasses is so mineral rich and acv is hard to tolerate on it's own , but is so recommended. I make water kefir with sucanat or turbinado and let it go a couple days extra to reduce the sugar. I'll have to try this with the molasses and some stevia. A couple pinches of pink salt would really help retain fluids too.
Love the channel and my granddad use to make this! He was a 3rd generation farmer from Bronson, Iowa! Just subscribed and smashed bell!!!!! fyi you are absolutely gorgeous 💯❤🤠🙏 If you ever need a old cow polk from Alabama! I can grow anything and work on any machinery! My Grandfather took a shot of vinegar everyday!!!!! Great drink to keep healthy! Thimbd up 👍
The drink we used to have when I was young at haymaking time in Somerset was rough cider !!
I even like to make herbal iced teas in this heat you can sweeten them with Stevia instead of sugar if you want also I would add some ginger to some flavours but even adding lemon to mint tea is quite refreshing and helps detox.
Love your shirt! I am one too! Thanks for the recipe Melissa!
I just made this while watching your video. It’s good. I debated on adding more sweetener too but decided not too.
No idea why you popped into my feed, but I'm glad you did. This is a great tidbit and your other videos look promising.
I love the smell of fresh cut ginger, I’ve been brewing it with tea to make my ice tea.
Yes in New England it's called Switchel. I drink this every summer.
Great video. I'm going to try this.
We love this with honey from our bees. Never tried it with ginger. Will now!
I have a old book lady wrote about growing up in southern Michigan in the 1880s. Her "rule" or "receipt" is close but just a little different than yours. Thanks for the video. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I like mine sweeter too: 1 quart water, 6 tbsp of molasses (not blackstrap), 1 tablespoon +1 teaspoon of cider vinegar and 3/4 tsp ground ginger. I know it seems like a lot of molasses, but that is where the potassium comes from, I’m not sure ACV has much potassium as indicated in your blog post. I adapted this from a recipe in the old farmer’s almanac.
I found a similar recipe on Old Alabama Gardener's you tube channel. It really is refreshing on a hot day and good for digestion. I'll have to try this one
Let me know what you think!
cold pickle juice can be a good backup or addition. Obviously it's not going to have all the extra but, beats a Coke when overheated.
Totally enjoying this blog.
Thank you!
We make this recipe every year for the kids around Thanksgiving time; from the same book. We also do the corn soup recipe too.
What book is that? I would love to get it!
Great video with a healthy recipe.
Pretty good. Better than what I tried making from a book as a kid. (Difference of natural vinegar and cheep stuff?)
But I only needed enough for a water bottle while out gardening. So cut the recipe in half and dropped in a handful of ice. Perfectly filled a 22 ounce bottle.
Blessings to all!
Love your videos, please keep them coming.
Thank you and will do!
Great video😀. Your dad is a hero!!!
electrolytes are minerals! Herbs rock for this so much. I do nettle infusions it’s loaded with important electrolytes but it’s high in magnesium low in sodium. Magnesium lowers sodium and potassium. Nettle is high in potassium though so you can drink Himalayan salt or add oatstraw to nettle. Oatstraw has high sodium and magnesium
I use half nettle and oat straw in my kombuchi.
Our local farmer sells stinging nettle. Is that the same thing? If so, now I get why he's selling "weeds"
We'll give this a try. If Ma Ingalls said it's good, it must be good! Cheers from a few miles from where Laura grew up!!
Wow,,, talk about history 👍
LOL Pa's "itchy foot" took the family so many places, lots of towns can make that claim! So grateful she wrote it all down, what a good life.
and so disgusted that today people are trying to ban the books simply because Ma was afraid of naked men she'd never met before barging into her house while she was alone with her daughters. But funny, they never mention that part when denouncing Ma and her daughter as "prejudiced" against Native people! They weren't at all. Any mother has good reason to worry for her safety, no matter who those strangers are barging in (un)dressed like that.
Thank you for this cool recipe.🌷♥️👍😊
Thanks.I needed this!😀
Awesome, I got something very close to this recipe from Stacy (of Doug and Stacy's channel) just great during the summer to quench the thirst. 👌👍
I remember mr Wilson on a Dennis the menace episode going to the pharmacy and getting sulphur and black strap molasses to make spring tonic
Cool recipe! l will definitely make this soon.
Wow I just made this with acv, bs molasses, brown sugar and a bit of honey. I am currently growing ginger but don't have any on hand. Tastes great and can't wait to try it again with ginger! Thanks for sharing!
So glad you enjoyed it!
Strong and such a beauty. Love ginger.
The haymaker's punch I make also calls for a fresh squeezed lemon. I enjoy it cold especially after coming inside from doing yard work.
Just made your haymaker tea. Instead of apple cider vinegar I used maple fermented vinegar. It is really good. First time of making this. Since this is my first time trying this should I start small or drink it all? I only made a half quart. Thanks for so many great videos enjoy watching them.
Thank you! I shared this recipe with my brother as he constantly drinks power aid and I told him it has dyes be he won’t stop
That's cool! I shall try that
Awesome show thank you
I remember that in the summer at Grandma's when we used to gather the hay. No such thing as a bales back then it was just loose hay that dried in the field, pitched onto the back of an ole school bus converted into a flatbed and stored in the attic in the barn. What Grandma gave us however I swear was fizzy.
Perhaps she allowed it time to ferment. that could make it fizz, no?
after mixing it, I'll let it mellow in the fridge for a day or so, the flavor blends together and smooths out a little. 👍
I just enjoy watching you and listening to your voice. You are beautiful. Thank you for the natural gatorade recipe. I quit drinking Gatorade when they got involved in politics Coca-Cola as well.
i making this by the gallon . im using it while i fast prior too and to stay hydrated during chemo .
Ty so much!
Thank you
Read they also sometimes added a raw egg to it, not for me , but that's some well needed protein. Thanks.
Thank you...
I make this alote in the summer, I go between raw honey or the molasses, I use the grandma's molasses gives it more of the old fashioned taste
Now I'd fortify that energy drink with one gallon of corn whiskey and one heaping cup of raisins and a packet of brewing yeast - pour into a jug and cork. Set aside for about 30 -60 days in a dark and cool place. When the cork blows off - it is time to get Schnackered!
Added lemon juice and cinnamon. Switched from honey to brown sugar and maple syrup for the sweetener. Much better than just honey! Although I did have to add much more than 2 tablespoons of syrup to get it sweet enough.
Oh my gosh, my dad is the same way. If he sits, he sleeps. If he’s not sitting, he’s working. There is no in between.
i use white sugar and a little extra molasses. most the "brown" sugar i find in the stores is white sugar mixed with molasses. and gets hard as a brick within a few weeks.
I'd LOVE to get my husband off the Gatorade. I'll try this and see if I can convince him...
Very informative
Working for the Amish when I was a teenager we drank this all the time in the summer.
