Don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but the real Erin Brokovich and Ed Masry make cameos in the movie. Near the beginning when Erin and her kids are in the diner. Their waitress is the real Erin, and as a joke she's wearing a nametag that says Julia. So Julia is playing Erin and Erin is playing Julia. And in same scene , the real Ed Masery is the guy reading the menu in the next booth. Thought that was pretty cool movie trivia.

Fun story about Julia Roberts. In 2002 or 03 I met Julia Roberts. She was on a USO (United Services Organization - for you Canadians that may not know, they bring entertainment to troops at home and abroad) tour with the cast of Oceans 11 right after it came out. The USO flew the whole cast out to Turkey to visit the troops. They just flew something like 15 hours out to us and immediately came to see us in this giant semi-air conditioned tent. No rest, no stretching the legs or anything. Plane, transport to the tent and a 2 hour meet and greet with the troops. Julia, the poor woman, looked like she had just been worked over by a mob bookie. Her hair was wreck, she looked like she didn't sleep the whole trip. But she was gracious, generous with her time and seemed genuinely happy to meet us all.

I want to give a huge shout-out to the absolutely brilliant Marg Helgenberger. Her performance as Donna Jensen was critical to driving home the crimes that were committed against the people of Hinkley. Donna's initial strained confidence in the PG&E b.s. is shattered by Erin's research and you read every bit of it in Marg's dawning realization. And of course her "Am I still a woman?" scene is arguably the most heartbreaking and enraging one in the film. Marg won one Emmy for her supporting role as a prostitute in the Vietnam drama series 'China Beach' roughly a decade earlier and was nominated every season it was on. That she was not nominated for a supporting Oscar for Donna Jensen will always stick in my craw. She was the embodiment of the people of Hinkley in this movie and she made you feel every bit of it. Marg is the daughter of a meat plant worker and a nurse from a tiny Nebraska town, and she perfectly portrayed an earnest and credulous good-hearted small-town mother here.

The companies and, in Flint's case, the politicians who pull this shit should be bankrupted and probably jailed for the things they do to people. PG&E has been in the news again recently due to their failing or malfunctioning equipment starting wildfires. From an article back in May from The Guardian: "In recent years, PG&E equipment set off 31 wildfires that wiped away entire towns and killed 113 people." PG&E has been subjecting American citizens to hazardous chemicals and faulty equipment that starts deadly wildfires for decades. Their stock price did take a sizeable hit after the Camp Fire in November 2018 but they're still a $40bn+ company.

He was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in this (also well deserved). Peter Coyote, who played Kurt Potter (the lawyer who took over the case) does very little acting any more because he's making buckets o' money doing voice-over work. @@zammmerjammer Well, you have to blame Washington for that. He was the one that had it taken out. In a 2002 Newsweek profile of Washington for which Roberts was also interviewed, she said that she'd been asked numerous times why she didn't want to kiss Washington in "The Pelican Brief." She explained, "Don't I have a pulse? Of course I wanted to kiss Denzel. It was his idea to take the ... scenes out."
In the same piece, Washington explained that he didn't want to alienate his predominantly Black female fanbase by showing a Black man being intimate with a white woman rather than a Black woman. "Black women are not often seen as objects of desire on film," Washington said. "They have always been my core audience."

You could hear it in her voice she was having a great time. The cussing was cleaned up, but even in Spanish the words coming out of Julia Roberts mouth must've been shocking and so funny to say in Spanish. I just laughed and laughed and laughed. So I decided to show my parents the movie. God, I wish I'd had recorded their reaction. Seeing their eyes grow as big as saucers and laughing at what was coming out of her mouth. Priceless. Dark Waters would probably be at the bottom of my list between those three which is surprising to me since I really like Mark Ruffalo. Can't remember what it was about, but the one thing I do remember about it was Paul Newman smoking a cigarette while drinking a glass of beer. I remember that because he did it in a different way than anyone else. He sucked on the cigarette, but didn't exhale the smoke right away, instead he took a big gulp of beer first, swallowed and then, only then exhaled the smoke. It was the coolest thing I ever saw and years later in college when I started smoking, I used to do that as a party trick to impress my friends. Fortunately, I've quit smoking 9 years ago.
