Not sure 33 1/3 was still playing in theaters…The release date for the film was March 18th and the bronco chase was June 17th, so not the same week, but it was soon after the film came out. 😊
In the director/writer commentary (which I highly recommend listening to if you ever rewatch in the future because they’re also hilarious), they actually comment about Mary Lou Retton doing her own gymnastics stunts, saying “Who would we hire to do her stunts for her?”.
How they filmed the scene at 5:33 was, they had a lookalike in negligee walk into the bedroom, shut the door and hid, then Priscilla Presley came out fully clothed. It was not CGI, it was just a directional trick. 🎥
Although I still enjoy the film, I would agree with the order that you ranked them. However, watching it with both of your reactions makes watching it even more of a joy.
Matthew made me extremely happy when he said that the movie the baby carriage staircase shootout comes from is "on the list" (assuming he means the Brian De Palma movie that borrowed it from a Sergei Eisenstein movie). Historical and technical inaccuracy aside, it is a rousing story with a magnificent Ennio Morricone score and an Oscar winning performance by Sean Connery. Saying that you get your history from Drunk History reminds me of my little sister winning a college trivia competition because she knew what kind of poison killed Socrates. She knew it from the Steve Martin comedy skit "The Death of Socrates" in which Socrates nonchalantly drinks the hemlock given to him not realizing that it's poison then complains "People always say to me 'Socrates, what is the meaning of life?' 'Socrates, what is happiness?' NOT ONCE did anyone every say to me 'Socrates, hemlock is poison!'" Don't have to do a reaction video, but just to complete her own happiness, Emily needs to watch the "Police Squad" TV series that the Naked Gun movies spawned from.
Love the trivia contest story. I won a college debate for my team by knowing the author of a book I received as a kid: "Lad: a Dog." I never read it, but for whatever reason, I remembered the author's name years later.
@@Trebor74 yes, that was the Brian DePalma movie that borrowed from the earlier movie. It's also the one he said he hoped people wouldn't name in the comments and spoil for her. So, yeah.
I used this movie opening as part of a project for a cinema class where I used it as an example of parody vs homage. I used The Untouchables scene to demonstrate homage to the Potemkin.
Watching Emily laugh is just pure hilarity in itself. She gives the most wonderful reactions to comedies. Watching her enjoy herself it's a great way to end my day in a good way.
Speaking of comedy, Emily should react to 1991's "City Slickers." It's funny, has some seriously heartfelt moments, and it has more cows than you can shake a cattle prod at.
Oh, nice. I made the cut. I knew that sounded familiar. Funny enough, we had the same conversation about my name on your Twitch stream a few months back.
Love you two. I'm a huge fan of immature silliness and background humor so we're 3 peas in a pod. Emily not knowing what she's been doing for 2 years on her podcast - it made my day. #noway #way
If you haven't picked out a movie for New Year's yet might i suggest the original "The Poseidon Adventure" and then maybe follow it up with it's counterpart "The Towering Inferno"?
Fine Alley! I am glad that you guys finally got to this one. In my opinion, the first one was a brilliantly crafted comedy film, that started out with a solid action story, but balanced it with just the right amount of gags. Some were obvious, but there were also some more subtle layers. The end result being that you might be able to watch it many times, and still see something new, with each viewing. The door gag has been there, since the series, and I highly recommend that, even if just for your personal enjoyment. I think there are only six episodes. With each sequel, the movies become less about the story, and more about the number of gags they can fit into the film. A bit of subtlety is lost, as the gags get more bold and blatant. HOWEVER, at the same time, the jokes and gags DO truly get funnier. Therefore, I'd say this is one of the few movie series' that defies the rule of sequel suckage. I would still rate them by release date - just like you guys. However, I was thoroughly entertained by all three. They are all rewatchable, in my opinion. It's an extremely strong series compared to its peers. (Airplane 1 & 2, Hot Shots 1 & ducks, and the Police Academy series, etc.)
Finished out the series. Finally someone completed a movie series. You know, should have a contest to have a 3rd person join that's a fan of you 2 & gets to pick the movie.
14:19: Historical joke. Concealed Weapons Handler....Leon Czolgosz (who assassinated President William McKinley in 1901). IIRC correctly, there were similar references in the credits of the other 'Naked Gun' movies.
I'm not worthy to do this. But here's a clue on that *"doo luuu doo luuu".* It started on a skit show. Then a movie was made based on that public access TV skit. Party on Emily.
If you watch the Police Squad TV show that these movies are based on, every episode starts with a different opening about where the patrol car goes. It’s hilarious.
Another brilliant reaction. You guys should watch the original short TV series Police Squad, which these films are based on. As a suggestion, I think you would enjoy the Peter Sellers comedy films involving his most famous character Inspector Clouseau. The Pink Panther (1963), A Shot in the Dark (1964), The Return of the Pink Panther (1975), The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976) and Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978).
A few things you missed: 1. Jane's friend (the redhead) was played by Ellen Greene, AKA Audrey from "Little Shop of Horrors" (assuming you've seen That one yet) 2. The Oscar Lifetime Achievement award was being given to a guy named "Samuel L. Bronkowitz"; which was a name that ZAZ used years ago in their sketch film "Kentucky Fried Movie" (which you SHOULD see if you haven't) 3. A young Taran Killiam (SNL, Single Parents) appears in the "Geriatric Park" parody Otherwise, I totally discovered you by accident, and I couldn't be more thankful that I did.
Jim Abrahams ( the middle of ZAZ ) also worked on Scary Movie 4, which I haven't seen yet. Once upon a time, when Leslie Nielsen was minding his own business, a random man spots him then goes up to him and blurts out 'Banacek!'. The random man thought Nielsen was George Peppard. I figure this is why the jokes show up where Drebin is confused with someone else. ( Phil Donahue will not be invited back ) When you get to the Police Squad series, be sure to watch the opening credits for the special guest star. On the last disc there's footage of a long scene made that was for a movie they would have slapped together from the existing episodes.
This movie isn't really that good. I used to watch it all of the time on cable TV. Every couple of years I get a desire to watch it, but I don't think I could ever actually recommend it.
The stairway scene that this movie parodies is itself an homage to a silent movie called "Battleship Potemkin" and its famous Odessa Steps scene. The sequence is very thrilling and horrifying and still stands up today. Well worth a watch if you haven't seen it.
@Brad1980 Yeah, I know. I didn't say the name of the movie for Emily's sake as she hasn't seen it yet. I was saying that '87 movie was an homage to the movie Battleship Potemkin.
The beginning is a parody of the stairs scene in the Untouchables (Kevin Cotsner, Sean Connery, De Niro). A great movie to which you should react too. By the way, the scene was itself a homage to a similar scene in older movie I can't recall at the moment.
The title maybe was supposed to be "For the record", like vinyl, but people weren't buying it like they used to, so they wouldn't understand the reference.
The scene where they are getting ready to head on that road trip. the ladies are dressed as the characters from Thelma and Louis it is also the same car used in the movie.
I LOVE Man with Two Brains, but there's a huge payoff that's dependent on knowing who a certain someone is. Kind of like with Mel Time and Top Secret...it's WAY funnier if you know who Mel was.
I've seen these movies before but after your series I bought them on bluray and found out there was a TV show as well. I picked it up too but haven't seen it yet. Hope it's as funny as the films.
