Prayers Before Battle - "The 13th Warrior"

- My favorite scene from "The 13th Warrior", showing preparations and prayers of the remaining warriors before the final battle.
Muslim prayer: ""Merciful Father, I have squandered my days with plans of many things. This was not among them. But, at this moment, I beg only to live the next few minutes well. ... For all we ought to have thought and have not thought, all we ought to have said and have not said, all we ought to have done and have not done, I pray thee, God, for forgiveness."
Viking prayer: "Lo, there do I see my father. Lo, there do I see my mother and my sisters and my brothers. Lo, there do I see the line of my people back to the beginning. Lo, they do call to me. They bid me take my place among them in the halls of Valhalla where the brave may live forever."

there was an interview of Antonio Banderas where he was going over his career. He said that he always hoped this movie would be rediscovered and people would see how good it was. the interviewer (paraphrased) said, "Wait, do you not know? Go online and see, there are many people who love this movie."
It's a good movie
I watch it every month. It's just a good over all movie.
Great movie that I thoroughly enjoyed.
I'm one of them
Lo there do I see my father
Lo there do I see my mother...
One of the greatest underrated movies in history! Such as shame people didn't see it.
This is legitimately one of my all time favorite movies, seen it probably 20 times since I was a kid, it's criminally underrated.
Beowulf historically.
that's what i was going to say
It is indeed an underrated, though at times very flawed film.
It was the viking version of the Magnificent 7.
This movie is a absolute legend in Eastern Europe!
Exactly, we love these kind of movies, if we were the main audience this would be popular but sadly, movies like this get bombarded with bad reviews from the west, mostly all the mental groups that live among them, that think this is too much manliness on one screen lol
I am agreed. It's an absolute shame, because beside the production difficulties it's a great movie. It's an absolute shame that after the success of Braveheart (which isn't nearly as historically accurate as this film), they stop appropriating historical movies.
@@bencebotye3904 There are so many interesting historical events/figures and you could do a movie about every single one of them sadly the mainstream audience isn't very interested in historical epos
Unfortunately it did not so well globally, and it is a pity. One of my personal favorites. Glad to see it is acquiring a cult status as the time passes.
Aside from all the cool mpdern speacial forces and navy seal films i love this one is my all time fav movie
If this had been an "A" list movie; this scene would have been remembered for eons. Thank God for us the real fans.
+Odir Matamoros It was an A list movie, but it flopped. I still love it though and saw it more than once when it was in the theaters.

As many before me have stated: This movie is criminally underrated.
Merciful Father, I have squandered my days with plans of many things.
This was not among them. But at this moment, I beg only to live the next few minutes well.
For all we ought to have thought, and have not thought; all we ought to have said, and have not said; all we ought to have done, and have not done; I pray thee God for forgiveness.
So good!
What is a moment against eternity
And thou wilt give thyself relief, if thou doest every act of thy life as if it were the last, laying aside all carelessness and passionate aversion from the commands of reason, and all hypocrisy, and self-love, and discontent with the portion which has been given to thee. Thou seest how few the things are, the which if a man lays hold of, he is able to live a life which flows in quiet, and is like the existence of the gods; for the gods on their part will require nothing more from him who observes these things.
amazing 👏
@@vsync Is that the koran? it's the most zoroastrian thing I've heard from it if so. it sounds like a direct jesus or mohammed quote
I love both of the prayers but especially the first. It goes the complete opposite way you expect. Ibn isn't asking forgiveness for the things he's done, like most movies would show. He's asking forgiveness for everything that he should have done. He fully admits to having waste of much of his life with frivolous nonsense. And now, at the potential end of this time, he suddenly realizes how unimportant a lot of those things were. It's it's an amazingly simple but powerful sentiment and since none of us are going to make it out of here alive, definitely something to live by. No regrets.
It's a very Muslim attitude. Satan in Islamic mythology is less about tempting you to evil, and more distracting you with pointless crap.
Yes, to come to the realization, that we all die with our life unfinished. In the sense that we never accomplish all the things we thought we could and put off. How unimportant so many of those are when we think of the time spent on them instead of other things. Like sitting watching RUclips clips. Ha.
One of the most underrated books and movies ever.
A great quote from "Kingdom of Heaven".
"I put no stock in religion. By the word 'religion' I've seen the lunacy of fanatics of every denomination be called the will of God. I've seen too much religion in the eyes of too many murderers. Holiness is in right action and courage on behalf of those who cannot defend themselves. And goodness, what God desires, is here (points to the head) and here (points to the heart). By what you decide to do every day, you will be a good man. Or not."

That and Alan Shepard’s prayer. “Dear Lord, don’t let me fuck this up.”
So well said. A small band of brave men. They are outnumbered and are not seeking any personal fame or reward. They are just defending a small village of women and children. They know this is a desperate last stand and all they think of is to ask to live their last few minutes well. A moving scene and a very underrated film
Antonio's prayer and then the prince, led by the worried and sad dog, dragging himself out to fight with his brothers one last time...did me in. Epic.
I love how he doesn't ask forgiveness for what he's done but for what he hasn't done.
Better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all.
It is more a sin unto yourself to not aspire to reach your own potential than to God, though by mistreating yourself, you do sin before God. Jehovah, Allah, and Odin would all hold that to you that you live the best life possible for yourself. Which would include taking time to heal your mind, and appreciate the world around you. Look to the horizon and wonder what could be beyond. Relish the smell of a flower that you walked by. Listen to the stories of a man you only just met. It's not just what you can give to people, but also remembering what you can give yourself. Being selfless doesn't mean having no regard for self. Because when you take care of yourself, the longer your journey may be, and the more you can give unto others.

The Arab’s prayer is better.
i think between this and the one from roscoe in the cowboys are my favorite movie prayers .
if ever a movie deserved a "directors cut", it's this one. The budget was over $136mil, and you can tell so much ended up being edited out. This movie could be an all time epic if it were finished out.
Agreed. Like “Kingdom of Heaven” (which is bound to it by its brief use of the Valhalla musical cue as an homage), I feel like a Director’s Cut to The 13th Warrior would turn this into an all time classic (like KoH’s extended version is).
In my book - it already is.
@@YankeeBlues21 KoH became a completely different movie with the DC. The splendor and brutality of those times was magnified, it became almost like a Blade Runner DC in terms of changing a flawed movie into a flawed masterpiece.
But which director is the issue. That's why this movie had problems initially. there were disagreements between the director and the author of the book, who took over and directed the later part of the movie. Some people would like to see how the first would have finished it.
the scene when Ahamed says. "Across seas of monsters and forests of demons we traveled. Praise be to Allah, the merciful and compassionate. May his blessing be upon Pagan men who loved other Gods. 7 years ago I still loved watching this scene in one of my favorite movies of all time.
This is one of the most honest depictions of a true "holy man." His companions may not believe in his God, but that's okay. All he asks for is for his God to believe in THEM. He doesn't push his religion on them. His faith rests in that God will help them because he was thinking of them enough to pray for them.
@@karazor-el6085 Thank you.
The rank of logicness is:
1. Islam
2. Agnostic
3. Atheist
4. Christianity, Judaism, and other monotheistic religion
5. Hinduism, Buddhism, and other polytheistic religion
6. Animism or people that worships nature.
If you're atheist, come on. Just 2 rank again and you will be more smarter.
Islam is the most logic.
Atheist itself is not logic because.. If the universe make its own self, then who create it in the first place? Who create the first material of universe?
In religion, we have concept of.. God create the universe and God exists since we don't know. He already there so he never born and never die.
At this point you will become agnostic person. A person that don't follow any religion but believes in God. One God. There is one invisible divine being that created us and watch us.
And after u became agnostic, you will feel the urge to find the most logic religion. And it's Islam of course.
Islam have complete rules about life. That's how "God's rules" supposed to be. If religion is God's rules, then it must have rules for every sectors. To make human live in the right way.
Religion must not just talk about spirituality. Religion also need to talk about their stuffs like economy, how to dress, how to interact, how to slaughter animal in the kindest way, etc.
AND RELIGION NEED TO STAY SAME SINCE THE FIRST IT CAME OUT UNTIL FOREVER.
Look at Christianity. Lot of edits happen there. The latest edit of Christianity is.. some churches allowing LGBT community.
Even the birth of Jesus on Dec 25th is a lie too.
Jesus born in the warm season of Jerusalem. Soo.. Obviously it is not December. December is the cold season even for the Arab region even though there is no snow in there.
The same thing goes with another "religion". Lot of edits. And still growing.
Unlike Islam that stay same like that since the birth of Islam until we don't know when.
Islam law doesn't change. It just adapting to the new latest knowledge and technology of humankind.
For example is.. In Islam, interest is FORBIDDEN or HARAM. But this law/rule also applies to the interest in e-finance thing.
Don't u think e-finance interest is acceptable because there is no e-finance word in Quran or Hadith.
Interest is interest.
I really do like the movie alot, and sure these lines you mentioned, but Come over.. Try JESUS.. No harm. I can push you bible, you definitely will fall in love with him
Why can I never hear that speech without tears?
The interesting part of the two prayers is that they come off as a dialog. The first prayer is asking for forgiveness and support. The second comes off as if it were a reply promising the reward of afterlife for bravery and sacrifice.
Say what you will of the movie as a whole, this part was particularly well written.
Everything about the movie is well written.
Dude that's a beautiful way of looking at it. Bravo!
I read some comments and this makes my tears fall.
I love this movie last part which i believe ask for forgiveness for the last time...
Thats all i want before i die to have a forgiveness for the last time who made as...
I saw the first was of a man clearing his soul, preparing it so that if he dies, he dies with no stain of unforgiven sin. Someone prepared to die, but making sure they died in a state of holiness and purity.
The second, I saw it as a declaration that there would be no cowardice, that their ancestors would witness their acts and not be ashamed of them.

13th warrior is one of my favourite films, there's just something about how it manages to escape some of the normal pitfalls of generic medieval films.
I like that it was pretty much the story of Beowulf, done as though Beowulf really happened. Then it got expanded and exaggerated into the epic legend that was eventually handed down.
Really? I like it because it falls into so many of those pitfalls. There’s a certain charm to it. Sometimes it’s genuinely exciting, other times it’s so bad it’s good.

A very underrated movie! A silent classic.
The part that always gets me is at 2:00, where their leader has stumbled, and one warrior instinctively moves to help, but stops when he realizes it is important for both their leader and the rest of the men that he take his position unaided.
"For all we ought to have done and, have not done..."
So very much agreed that this was horribly underrated. The prayer scene and the following death scene alone are worth another star each, and the rest of the movie was frankly damn good.
This was one of many of the "smaller" movies my father showed me. I'll remember and love it forever.
Antonio's prayer is awesome. I tell these at risk youth that true prayer is raw honesty. And a true follower prays not to be spared. But to accept his end.
I love also the distinction - instead of "have done but have not done" he says "have done AND have not done".
Every time this movie is broadcasted, I watch it, and always for these two prayers. They both have their merits. One is a man simply asking God to give him the strength to live the next few minutes well, to stand against the Wendol, as well as asking him to forgive him for not living life to the fullest.
The other is a firm belief that your ancestors are watching and waiting for you, and that aslong as you are brave, you will be welcomed into Valhalla if it is your time.
Both aren't so bad at all, I think.
I love it when a movie just mix different cultures and make them work together and understand each other :)

The Wendols obviously representing Mongols. Shown in the movie as being evolutionarily challenged, living isolated lives outside of human civilization. Language they do not understand and customs that are not of their world. It's a fictional story based on what would have been the Vikings most hated opponent.
One of the most powerful moments in all of film history
As a Viking I approve this movie. 😁
One of the most important scenes is when Ahmad ibn Fadlan learns the language just by listening and the Viking King asks him to write something ('paint words') and then to imitate him the next morning - to show him that Vikings are capable of learning and not barbarians.
I love this movie, have seen it at least 12 times!
'Can you draw sounds?' I think is how they put it.
Just once more then ...😂
Only 12? Lol
It’s even better than that. Bulwyf is testing him. He wants to see if he’s really writing, or just making random marks. When he tells Ibn to speak what he draws, he leaves a little piece out. When ibn corrects it, he knows that the symbols really do mean the words.

I still remember this in the theater and just that first shot of him stumbling down the hill is so incredibly moving, I instantly got chills and still do.
A true warrior would rather die beside his brothers in arms than lay there dying in bed. It allows his soul peace to know that his death was for a purpose rather than something that he meekly submitted to.
The looks on their faces as he stumbles down the hill is despair and sorrow and a feeling of defeat. Their hearts and courage only come back and are lifted when he starts his prayers. It is an amazing example of what words can do for the human.

One of the things I love about this movie is that final fight was just a few moments of slow motion, and practically still frames, it was the build up and dialogue from the characters which made this so memorable.
Small detail that I like was how he unsheathed the sword (knife) and threw the scabbard away, because he knows he will never use it again.

But seriously that Viking prayer may not be historically accurate but its a pretty fucking bad ass prayer.
The historically accurate prayer is that prayer except you say,
In the halls of Valhalla,
Where the brave may live forever,
Where thine enemies have been vanquished,
Where we no longer fear but rejoice for those who have died the glorious death.
That's the historically accurate prayer, they would use this before going into battle. At least from my research and by being a proud heathen and soldier I say this prayer too.

It also has somewhat of a much gruesome truth to it which is better left unknown. Things that involve the one who said the prayer did not have a pleasant end if we put it like that.

This is freaking beautiful..... Oh merciful Father Mother Divine Love, please let me die while in a worthy cause, that my life in the end had accounted for something, and at least, aided someone...... May the Great Architect of the Universe be praised in love, emotions, and actions.....
A man and warrior who has prepared his life is spared fear and panic in combat situations where they may face overwhelming odds and certain death. The reward of preparation is Peace and resolve. This manifests itself in a fierce resolve that can lead to confusion and dishearten the enemy, breaking their courage and their attack. Both of these prayers reveal a mastery over life and fear from two cultural perspectives. Every culture has something similar.
Prayer completed.

In tha Halls of Valalah
Where the Brave May Live for Ever.
Power full lines can't stop my tears as on thousand blood Boiling vibes come in my veins.
It's a good video it's a good movie he looks so tiny compared to them LOL I didn't realize he was so small next to Scandinavians anyway.
Valhalla. or depending on certain spellings, Valhol.
A point of watching this with my daughters....... This is what real men and women do when it counts......
Yes. Why does this scene seem so relevant lately?
Still one of my FAVE films of ALL TIME. I went to Film School. I have a graduate degree in Film Study. I know what makes a decent movie. Despite the fact that this BOMBED at the American Box Office, I still see it as a "CLASSIC" although a 'Cult Classic". to be sure. Classic none the less :)
Who cares of this movie bombed this is my all time fav film to watch no fancet cgi or any of that bullshit
GMC-if you went to film school, your prof would have expected you to justify that opinion with detail. Yes surely this is a cultish movie; what makes its transcendently "good: ??
Perhaps.....the box office performance is not an indication of ANYTHING.. other than 'mass appetites' - of the time.
Alot of today's beloved classics did horribly at the 'box-office'......eg Blade Runner.
Criminally underrated movie!
to me this actor its the thor that the marvel movies deserved.
Nah, he is too awesome and serious to be playing a character whose target audience of fans are teens and chicks who drool over abs.
Fate decide it. He came very early.Very charismatic very strong ,many would like to follow his lead as a king. Unfortunately as someone said he came before people appreciate the live and badass of a viking era.
If they'd done these back in the early 90s, hell yes. But by 2010+, maybe Odin?
Lol fuck no. I mean I’m sure he tried his best, but Bovine (Buliwyf) was easily the blandest main character in the movie. The actor is not bad, but nothing indicates he’d be a better Thor.
i agree 100%
This movie has such reverence for what the world really was in the early dark ages
I watched this movie 10 times at least. I watch it every time I stumbled upon it while switching through the channels. This scene still gives me goosebumps. Every damn time.
I always liked this film for it's aspects of bonding either male or cultural. Coming out at the time it did after 2001, and showing how the east and west (this time North) bonded in battle. This scene pretty much sums up the whole film.
it actually came out 1999.
Should have said around 2001, sorry ... There always already a lot of prejudice already and 2001 didn't help it much either. Still an underrated film tho.
Fuckery this is a good movie. Totally holds up.
“I beg only to live the next few minutes well”-Words to live by.
I love this movie “ don’t worry little brother there are more” I say that all the time at work when somebody is working to hard!!lol
My favorite moment from my favorite movie. Thank you for posting this. It brings great masculine warrior tears to my eyes every time I see it, no matter how many times I rewatch this amazing film. From my first few times in the theatre to now, it never gets old.
Remember who you are, where you came from, and what your holy destiny is before the Lord your God, the true Old Father who has designs for you far greater than anything you could possibly imagine.
One of the greatest scenes in movie history.
💖 this prayer as a CHRISTIAN & especially as a PROUD military vet of forgotten but real Afghan war. 💖 scene of different but common brave warriors working as 1 as all should.. Lo did I myself see my father, my mother, my sisters, my brothers, and lo did I see the line of my people back to the beginning. Lo they did call to me. They bade me take my place among them in the halls of valhalla. Where ALL the brave may live FOREVER. Till then.. Till we meet again..RIP all my passed on brethren; any champion at all of good that needed no weapon but their heart 💛.. Till Valhalla 🗡🤝✨🙏💜
Beautiful film, I started watching this absently, by the end I was inspired..
Greatest mistake of this movie is coming out before Skyrim engulfed the world with interest and love of Nordic culture
Well speaking of Skyrim. The sick Viking who fought outside did the voice of Ulfric Stormcloak
John Natalis I knew I recognized the voice, thank you!!
@@HunterGilligan not viking! He is a Hesir and his men, the Arab too, were his Huskarls or Hirdmannen.
@@jarlnils435 what’s a hesir might I ask? Just wondering. I thought these guys were like Eastern Germanics (Varangians), I I think Eben was a Muslim Spaniard in real life.
@@brotherhoodofsteeld.c.chap1917 I think Ibn Fadlan was from the Abbasid Kalifat. And the Varangians were northern germanic and eastern slavic warriors. The name is not the name of a culture or tribe. It's the name of a guard unit of the emperor of Constantinopel. Eastern germanic tribes didn't exist at this time anymore. These warriors were Svear or Göter. In eastern europe called Rus. That name came from the finnish word for rowing. Oh and a Hesir is a noble of the northern germanic tribes. Later the Jarl replaced the Hesir in his rank and the Hesir was a minor noble or a leader of a warparty.
With Viking blood in my family, I think this movie captured something that makes my blood want to fight the crap we see in the news, the murders, the drugs the theft. So many life's without honor. Lo there do I see my father, lo there do I see my mother, and sisters and brothers, lo do I see the line of my people back to the beginning, they bid me to take my place among them in Valhalla, where the brave will live forever
You are not alone, I will stand next to you as long as I can 🇺🇸
I just realised this scene got inspiration from 'the Battle of the Mounds' from Conan the Barbarian (1982), with Conan's final prayer to Crom before he and the few faced the evil Riders of Doom! And even this was inspired by 'the Battle on the Ice' from Alexander Nevskij (1938) with Alexander and his army awaiting the evil riding knights of the Teutonic Order.
Watched it in the theater when it came out. Always loved this movie.
I never get tired watching this movie, such a shame people did not go see it or have even heard of it.
I saw it at the cinema when it first came out, and I saw a good review of it in my local newspaper. But then the major media critics started saying how awful it was, and very few went to see it.
I think it's great. It's based (somewhat) on the travels of a real Arab who had contact with the Vikings. The Viking funeral is based on his writings.
Most underrated film in the history of film making! 😄 So many memories with this movie...One of my all time faves for sure!
One of the greatest scene sequences in Hollywood recent history. Still get choked up watching this.
One of the very few movies that I will watch over and over again with as much enthusiasm as the first time I saw it.
"When the time comes... don't let them be taken."
Echoes of Whitman's tale of the Alamo.
Honestly would you want your children to be taken back those cannibals.
Every time I go before an exam... This is what I say.... HAha
I've been saying this alot since my girlfriend and I broke up, to prepare myself for any possible emotional ups and downs (and to also process my own thoughts and who I am). I love it!!!
Hahaha me too!
Greetings from the future, nobleman! Odin trusts you made it through your studies unscathed and you are enjoying the hard won fruits of your labors.
VERY GOOD FRIEND BLESS YOU JUST CARRY ON 😉🙏😅😆😂🤣🤣🤣👏🍒🤝
Massively underrated film.
In my top 10.
This movie definitely has its great moments!
"The times when Islamic culture was illuminated and superior than any others, in phylosphy, science, music, poetry and in many other manners." ... its a shame what this become today.
Sir I'm a right wing conservative and I agree with you 100 percent
+Ebefren Revo I'm a Muslim and I agree with you 100 percent as well.
Well "superior to any others is not fully true"..Their science was very advanced for that time but depending on wich place in the world so where many others. And this wisdom was also shared to other people, like the european christians. Im not trying to argue and say you're wrong im just stating some facts :)
agreed less militancy more scholars..most culture could benefit from more scholars.
Al-Andalus is paragon.
