    What do you think about the Surface Laptop? If you're a Mac user, could it tempt you away?

    • @slowercuber7767
      @slowercuber7767 3 года назад

      nope, but then i've not watched the episode yet ... I get off work in a couple of hours and plan to check it out then. Somehow, I doubt you could reveal anything that could convince this anti-window codger even to consider a windows machine for anything other than gaming, and even that reluctantly.

      No, I’m leaving the Windows world because I’m fed up with the OS. If I could install Linux on it I might, but I’d rather just stick with with M1 MacBook Air and a used Thinkpad with Linux Mint.

    The Surface charger is actually a fast charger (since Laptop 3) and charges your laptop in record time. That can be very valuable if you suddenly get an appointment and need a dash of electricity in quickly.
    Really liked your review. You are a fair man.

    The 'charging port' is actually a multi function high speed interface. If you pair it with the Surface break out box you can run 2 4k monitors and the box also has 4 USB type A, gigabit ethernet and speaker connection. It's called the 1661 surface dock but requires mains power but does charge the laptop when connected. This has been part of the Surface design for a long time but I think MS should have moved on and just added a couple more USB C connections so you can pair it with a generic (and far cheaper!) hub

    • @benkeen
      @benkeen 3 года назад +3

      This ^.
      The dock is an excellent (reassuringly maclike price) piece of kit. The standard PSU also has a USB A charging port which is useful on the move.
      Alcantara only gets manky if you are using it in a mucky environment or you are a dirty bugger (like the tyre kickers in the macstore who have just been to MacDonalds). It does clean up really well though. Had my Surface Laptop for three years, no issues and looks like new despite going all round the world with it.

    • @TheNightquaker
      @TheNightquaker 2 года назад +1

      Yeah, I hate that the Surface Laptop 4 has that highly-proprietary connector for the dock. C'mon, Microsoft, just put some high-speed USB-Cs in there instead.

    • @HaydnMowbray
      @HaydnMowbray 2 года назад +1

      @@TheNightquaker plus point was that they introduced it with a MagSafe (style) connector just as Apple stupidly removed it

    • @rowaystarco
      @rowaystarco 2 года назад

      @@HaydnMowbray And now Apple went back to MagSafe instead of USB-C as the main charging port.

    • @norebar5848
      @norebar5848 Год назад

      But I REALLY badly want my charger to be magnetic so that I don't drag it out accidentally, because I've done that a lot in the past 😅
      Is that possible with a usb-c charger? I've not seen MagSafe usb before, the cord was always stuck in there when you pull at it. Which is a good thing for other purposes, but not for my charging port.

    My MS Surface Go is a couple of years old now and yet the Alcantara covering is still in good nick. Also, I love typing on it and, even though it's a small keyboard, I can type quicker on it than on a regular sized keyboard. Thanks for this video Mark. I look forward to your thoughts on the Edge browser. The time since I last used Chrome is now measured in months!

    Thanks for the real-life review! I think this is the sort of review that appeals to most people looking for a laptop. I'm a Dell XPS user (9500 UHD+ 10th Gen i7) and the Surface Laptop 4 is really the only professional laptop out there that gives me some PC envy. As a Note20 Ultra guy, I was hoping that Samsung would win the day with their Galaxy Book lineup, but that was a big miss, in my opinion--at least for what I wanted in a laptop. (Also, the Galaxy Book comes with very limited specs in Canada.) Anyway, the only reason I went with the XPS is for the display, both its aspect ratio and quality, and that I could find a refurbished one for a great price. Okay, the form factor was another reason. It's simply gorgeous (especially the white one). The similarly spec'd Surface Laptop 4 was simply too expensive--and I'm not a big fan of the 3:2 aspect ratio. I look forward to your future review! Maybe try the XPS 9510 base model and give us your thoughts as a Mac guy? Cheers!

    Just a quick note on warranties. UK consumer law gives you 6 years from delivery of the item (in England). This includes a right to a free repair, replacement, or refund if caused by a manufacturer fault (not accidental damage).

    Fans in Windows computers run differently to Macs’. Mac fans don’t start spinning until the machine got a little bit hot, PC fans however they start spinning when you turn on the computer. In Bootcamp the fans will still perform like it’s in a Mac. I actually manually set the fans to run at the start when in Bootcamp.

    Another great review.
    As I am moving most of my personal world from Windows to Mac, this journey that I see in this video is quite interesting as it is the opposite path that I have been taking in the last 10 months. Although, I am going to need to purchase an Intel based, Windows 11 system in the future as tech is no longer "single system" based if we expect to have the best features for a task.
    Best of luck with this PC! It looks like a winner.

    I'm not saying bluescreens are a thing of the past in Windows land, but I personally have not experienced one in years. On the other hand, I just got an M1 MacBook Air a month ago and already experienced one "bluescreen" (kernel panic). Frankly, I don't think it's a big problem on either platform for a typical user, although there are of course exceptions.

    I actually have both of the mentioned laptops and did a quick Geekbench 5 test out of curiosity, here are the results:
    Intel i7 16GB Ram Surface Laptop 4 (plugged in high performance mode):
    Multi Core Score 5722, Single Core Score 1514
    M1 MacBook Air 8GB Ram 7 Core Base Model (unplugged):
    Multi Core Score 7505, Single Core Score 1704
    In addition, even though the Surface Laptop 4 has the best battery life I’ve ever used in a Windows laptop, but the MacBook Airs battery life lasts almost twice as long in everyday use.
    Loving both of these tbh, but I can’t imagine what the rumoured M1X MacBook will be like…

    I'm looking at replacing my current laptop - the 1st Gen Surface Laptop which I bought back in 2018. I would really like to get the new surface laptop however my main gripe is that, after 3-4 years, the display specs (bar size) haven't changed. To pay for a premium product with display tech from that long is annoying for me.
    Edit: Forgot to mention, the alcantara on my surface looks worn but by no means gross. Not bad at all for a laptop that's been my sole computer experience for the last 4 years.

      I'm looking to replace my current XPS 13 from 2017 as well, and was looking into the Surface Laptop because it seems to be the only package comparable to the M1 Macs. The specs of the Surface Laptop 5 had leaked (WindowsPrime), so I'm hoping it releases soon enough. The display specs have changed for it, bumping it up to a 120hz panel, but I do not think the bezels have reduced, as the dimensions of the laptop remain the same aside from it being 2mm thinner.

    The machine has a “hybrid sleep” so depending on how long it’s off it’ll either keep things in memory or move them off into storage and take a little longer to boot. Own a higher end model myself (i5/16gb) and was interested to hear a more Mac oriented opinion. Only side note is I’ve had my own machine die after a few months, best guess was due to heat causing the battery not to charge, but MSFT replaced it. As for Alcanrara long term, had a Laptop 2 before this and it wore alright, material does feel a little less smooth with time and only discolored a little so mileage varies.

    It seemed to me like everyone uses Scrivener, but apparently not. Do you just think Scrivener is too complex? Or can Ulysses do something that Scrivener can't?
    To be honest, I also really liked that Scrivener is a one-time purchase. For some reason, subsription based writing apps stress me out when writing and it kills my mojo 😅

    Great review! I’m very interested to see the transition to Windows 11 - perfect to see on your new device. I could go either way; loving our new M1 Mac Mini (it’s been 6 months) after coming from a lifetime of Windows - but still very much In the Microsoft ecosystem on our Mac, due to our Android phones. After a lot of experimenting, we have found that Microsoft apps have better integration on The M1 Mac than Google - either one is essential if you have an android or Windows device… and Apple calendar and reminders sync better with Outlook calendar and ToDo than it does with Google from Mac/iPad to an android phone. New entries to Microsoft ToDo, shows up on Apple reminders under an Outlook file - genius.
    On another matter - super curious about Ulysses, especially uploading to Wordpress, because that’s where I am as a mature aged student studying a Bachelor of Arts in Professional Writing. In fact, all the tips please🙏😂.

    This is not a bad laptop but is average at best and does get a bit too much affection from the MS crowd. It is rather dated in its fourth iteration and at manufacture recommended pricing is way too expensive for one with no dGPU especially the higher spec models?
    The AMD version is misleading as the good battery life is faked with power throttling when running on battery. If you can get for 33-40% off then they can fit on a shortlist but like much of the Surface line, it seems MS has lost interest and just going through the motions? This i not a totally negative take as my original Surface Laptop (7th gen) still runs nice enough and the material still looks okay. I certainly have had no inclination to upgrade its the three newer updates and barring a total refresh then I not recommend upgrading.

    I actually wanted a Surface Laptop 4, but it is still not available where I am. The Microsoft site still shows "coming July 2021" but now it is September 2021 and no one knows when it will be available. I blame rubbish inventory control since I have been told by staff that they don't order new models until they sold all the old stock. Because of this, sometimes a new laptop is unavailable up to a year after launch.
    Since this market is big on Apple devices, at least that is available on launch day...

Not only is the PC crap, (keeps freezing, is slow, WiFi drops out constantly and other issues) but DELL as a company are as dodgy AF. Different prices for the same laptop on 3 different DELL websites, advertising which is as clear as mud and limited models for sale from stores, for people who prefer to purchase from a store.
