- One of the opening scene's of 1988's Arial, shows his father giving him the keys to his car, telling him that life basically isn't worth living and then going to the bathroom to shoot himself. This is typical Kaurismäki at his best, and is actually a lot funnier than it sounds. Includes English subtitles. Please subscribe to see more Aki Kaurismäki clips coming soon and even request some. However, I won't upload full movies, as the idea of these clips is to promote the brilliant works of Aki Kaurismäki.
This must be the best suicide scene I have ever seen in a film. It's dark, sarcastic and the music in the background and the 60's cafeteria make this perfectly symbolize the death or traditional countryside life in Finland and downsides of urbanization. And the monologue of the old man is great!
R.I.P. Actors Erkki Pajala (1929-1990) and Turo Pajala (1955-2007)
One of my favourite films of all time! Discovered it when I was deep into my obsession with all things Finnish when I was about 16-17 and watched it many times since. The deader-than-deadpan performances, the locations, the music, the sparse but comic dialogue - all brought together by the master of black comedy!
I've seen a good few of Aki Kaurismäki's films (none of Mika's yet, though!) and this is still my favourite. His adaptation of Crime and Punishment (Rikos ja rangaistus) is also a delight. Well, maybe not a delight exactly, but it sucks you in just like Ariel does.
I’m twenty totally obssesed with all finnish things does it mean it will end?? I dont wanna
@@jonasbalcar4473 It'll never go away, don't worry!
They're father and son in real life. Both long gone now, sadly.
Kimi Räikkönen could be a character in a Kaurismäki movie... 😀
I know that Nordic pain. Amazing scene. Greetings from an Estonian :)
watched this whole film again yesterday. brilliant 10/10 must-see masterpiece
Didn't even realize that the old man is the actual father of Turo Pajala, the guy playing Taisto.
Absolute masterpiece
great how we never even see the corpse but just deduce it is there. "brevity is the soul of wit"
"The ship's called Ariel. Tonight at 10:00 off Hernesaari Point."
What a masterpiece.
pure cinema

1988.
My home town.
Father? I always thought this was the manager of the bankrupt company,
This isn't too far from my mental state to be honest.
The only difference is that I don't have a son to whom I can impart my wisdom........or to give my car away to.
Perkele.
Erkki Pajala !
Could you please tell me what's the song in the beginning?
It's called "muistojeni tango" by Olavi Virta.
This language sounds very much like Magyar although i dont speak either.
looks like a walther PPK pistol - the same gun that hitler shot himself with
Nope. It's the FN Model 1910.
@@GugureSux think you're right. well done thx
@keku42 Do you know what car he drives in the movie?
somogyvari Cadillac 62 series
So the scene is completely different when he looks into the bathroom. Is there a point to this?
No, many toilets have a pathway, especially in older buildings. You don't face the stall straight away.
@@magnuskallas That's right, it just cuts off the unnecessary and irrelevant few steps walk through that little pathway
Why he shot himself?
They were miners, but the mine was closed and they lost their jobs.
Why does finnish sounds like greek?
What's this?... 😐 Music 🎵 is not bad, but, what's this!?..... 🙄🔫 Fta I need cocaine 🤣😭
