Extremely specific comparison, it made me giggle! That reminds me of when I lost all my coffee from dying in stardew valley and then I had to buy it back for an INSANE amount of money. :'-D
This is why translation is really hard. Sure, you have translated words, but those words have slightly a different meaning in the two languages. Especially when comparing an Uralic language translated to a Germanic language. It's a whole different language system apart. Sometimes, ye a direct translation is technically the most correct, but it still misses that small context that word for word translation misses. Like Japanese honorifics. The closest english can get to them is sir, ma'am, etc. but you don't just drop them at the end of the person's name as much as in Japan and there way more versions of the honorifics to have english keep up with them. Which is why some translations keep the honorifics but just don't translate them. My point is, translation is a mess of compromises.
Fun fact: that skit is so culturally significant that it has spawned a saying. When you have a deadpan expression on your face, you're "as a thousand mark bill" (tonnin setelinä)
I have to thank the clip of the rally driver @ 1:50 sending me down the rabbit hole of research what “rally English” is and it’s origins are, another thing to add to my collection of random facts I know.
That "big note" stare is what you get in Budapest, Hungary after you give a 20.000 Forints banknote for your 5000 Ft ride and the taxi driver tries to convince you that you only gave him 2000. 😂
The first kid seems like the extremely gifted kid that then suddenly started struggling because everyone kept encouraging & praising how grown up he was 😭
I don't look back fondly on most of my time in EVE Online, but I'm so glad my corporation had so many Finnish people in it, because they introduced me to a whole new genre of regional humour.
Something you may want to take into account if you decide to do more of these (I do hope so! I like these!) is how much text the average viewer can be expected to read in the time a given line is visible on screen. For instance, I don't think it was necessary to convert the marks to euros for Tonnin seteli. Since (I assume) the target audience is global, the average viewer can't be expected by default to be familiar with the purchasing power of a single euro, especially when it varies over time and by country, so it's not useful as a point of comparison. Moreover, it's already contextually obvious from the skit itself that if a coffee and a pastry cost 8 marks, then 1000 marks is a very large bill. The idea was lovely on paper, but in practice, it's a distraction. The part with Pekka Pouta losing his composure, on the other hand, would probably have benefited from an added Fahrenheit conversion, since every country in the world uses one of the two temperature measurements, the conversion rate between them is constant, and there are ways of communicating both in a compact way: "5 degrees (celsius)" takes up about a third more space than, say, "5°C (41°F)".
I think it is much better that they are translated as accurately as they are now. It makes the nuances of the jokes more understandable. If someone doesn't keep up they can skip 10 sec back.
@@teppotulppu1603 You can get accuracy and legibility both. It's not a tradeoff. Jokes especially suffer from having to pause and skip back repeatedly.
@@Yoarashi I stand by my opinion. There are many videos that I don't fully understand at the first time and I either have to watch them all over again or jump to some previous point. I don't think the joke gets worse because you have to rewind it or watch it again to understand fully.
Röllin kankkunen vois toimia hyvin lontoolaiseen yleisöön kun se on varsin tarinavetoinen. Pitöisiköhän olla alkuun oikeaa Rölliä hiukan ja sen hehkutusta kun rölki on semmoisenaankin tosi kova (esim Riitasoinnun kasvatusmetodit jne). Rölli itseasiassa käy itsessääbkin jo vähän meemintapaisesta.
