Aki Kaurismäki - Ariel - Mikkonen's Death - Coolest Death Scene Ever - Matti Pellonpää Kaurismaki

  • This is a clip from Arial, one of Kaurismäki's most talked about and critically appreciated films and the film where, arguably, Kaurismäki found his true voice.
Prior to Arial, only Kaurismäki's fourth feature presentation, he had released three films, Crime and Punishment (Rikos ja rangaistus), Calamari Union and Hamlet Goes Business (Hamlet liikemaailmassa), two of which were adaptations of other artists works, albeit with what would become the distinctive Kaurismäki stamp, and the other was more of an homage or experiment into the world of classic screwball comedy.
When Ariel came along in 1990, it seemed that Kaurismäki had truly found his way and had made something that, while only just over an hour long, was memorable, beautiful written, dark, colourful, deep and subtle in it's humour, in the way only a Kaurismäki film can be.
In this particular scene, we see the main character, Kasurinen's (Turo Pajala) friend and fellow jail-breaker Mikkonen, expertly played as ever by Matti Pellonpää, heading into the office of a man who hired them to rob a bank, as they needed some cash having broken out of prison earlier in the film. This is a cast-iron classic Kaurismäki moment with everything from ironic humour, deep-pan dialogue and touching beauty. It is an essential scene to see, arguably a scene that the 'highly original' Quentin Tarantino may have seen a fair few times before producing what is considered his best work.
It also has what is arguably one of the coolest death scenes ever put to film, with a message that comes in the most unlikely of places; Mikkonen finding the button in the back of the car that they had been looking for for months, teaches us that, even if it's at the very end, we all find what we are looking for.

The real joke is that the main character drove the car all the way from Lappland to Helsinki (over 1000km) without the roof on, because it didn't seem to work then.
That's in the beginning of the film and it was winter i.e. quite cold.

If I get the chance to choose, I want my last words to be "Bury my heart at the dump.". I would also settle for "What's this button for?".

One of the funnest scenes in film history, I almost collapsed I was laughing so hard but you have to watch the entire movie to get the joke.

I fell off my chair watching this scene. It's like the whole movie is a set up for a practical joke.

I thought the "En minä halua mennä kotiin... Vapaus.... VAPAUS!" in Calamari Union was the coolest and most poetic. :D

Hopefully there would be some Fins here who could help out, what's the name of ending song in Varjoja paratiisissa or even better who is the artist, really husky, coarse jazz voice
And I just must say fcking Aki is just unique, he can make a most banal script very well drunk getting slightly bored in leisure time not knowing what else to do and just out of fun or wondering and it goes something like this I believe ..."hmmm I wonder if I write couple of pages of script of guy who's drinking a lot of coffee and has some problems in expressing himself, is generally weird, distant, might end up killing somebody or just fucking up his already fucked up and practically non-existent personal life" ... yeeeaaapp that's the movie
I'm all into long multi layered stories and movies,no matter how much it lasts and pretty much I get disappointed with what comes out of cinema...but Aki achieves in 50 - 70 mins what other directors just don't no matter how much time they use ( or waste )
My humble opinion - he succeeds because he is honest in what he's doing, and/or has a different perspective of things
When I say things I mean everything

It has the slow flow in purpose...not chaotic panic where speed and action covers bad acting and poor quality of actors. Think between the words and dialog...so intelligent film making.
