    Broke my heart when you painted it.

    • @TheVikingWoodsmith

      I had no choice since I fixed some parts with filler and sadly it stood out too much too leave it as is. I tried different finishes but it came through with all the others ;(
      But trust me, the paintjob looks way better in real life :)

      When you stop the video at 7:37 and 7:50 you will see the parts on the inside where filler is, that was the first and last time I used that stuff, but at that point time I was obsessed with getting the surface perfect. ^^'

      The Viking Woodsmith brother as a shop owner and craftsman myself no paint job looks better than wood😉 great job though! I understand the need to hide mistakes or imperfections. However on a ancient instrument of the Viking age those could only improve the look. Very inspiring work though. I see one on the workbench very soon.

    • @TheVikingWoodsmith

      I am totally with you ^^ all I say is I made the mistake to apply that stuff and there was no going back.
      If I could turn back time I would leave it as is.
      And thanks! :)

      @@TheVikingWoodsmith Why would you fix parts with filler? What is it with this instrument and RUclipsrs not making them correctly, or even remotely to any standard of quality? It's disgraceful. If you really are of norse ancestry and I question that based on phenotypic evidence - your ancestors are rolling in their graves.

    I like how, even though the video is sped up, you can still get a sense of how much work went into making this. Often times, sped up videos make the thing being made look quick and effortless, but this video was able to still convey the large amount of time spent making this beautiful instrument.

      Thanks for the kind words :)
      But if you are serious about playing I recommend a more traditional design anyway, I have sacrificed a lot of sound quality for looks, but I was aware of that trade of from the beginning :D
      I have now built 3 Tagelharpas and the best one is definitly this style: ruclips.net/video/OnnSgkHQ3A0/видео.html ;)

    When one is building an actual musical instrument, one should ask throughout the build, Am I using actual tone woods? Is it designed in a way that is resonant with those proper tonewoods being at correct thicknesses? Is the bridge made out of the right material and grain orientation allowing for vibrations to be transferred to the top plate?

    • @TheVikingWoodsmith
      @TheVikingWoodsmith  2 года назад

      Thanks for the feedback :)
      Believe it or not all that was taken into consideration.
      With it beeing my first ever instrument and the focus lying on the design that's what I was prepared to get.
      Had I wanted to make the best Tagelharpa possible I would not have used reclaimed material and went with a traditional design.
      But that was never the goal of the project.

      I guess there's no accounting for tastes. That's an abomination that is worthy only of being firewood. Please, improve your standards - learn what instrument it is, what it looks like, how it sounds, how it is assembled. The market is FLOODED with inferior quality junk like this these days. Actual instrument makers go starving while China, India, and Eastern Europeans flood the market with pure garbage they made in their shed. It's frustrating when I see people acting like this junk is somehow acceptable, let alone impressive. :/

    Would you at any point release the measurements of the instruments? Maybe the template you used? Ive always wanted such a badass instrument and kinda wanna make it myself

    • @TheVikingWoodsmith
      @TheVikingWoodsmith  3 года назад +1

      I can take the measurment for you but truth is I kinda winged it so I am not sure to what degree you would want them to remake it.
      Also since I had no former experience at that point the sound quality fell short. :)
      My advice would be to just start with the main chaimber of the body, decide on a size and basically "add" your design to it, if you know what I mean. :)
      All that depends of course on the material and tools you have available.

  • @Raphael_FFS
    @Raphael_FFS 6 лет назад +3

    I see a Tsfh fan here ! Can you tell me what kind of wood are you using, and if "pinus" (pine wood) would work ?
    I saw your composition "Dreki Kalla", there is some especial scale length from the bridge to the tuners, or any would work ?
    I discovered that instrument 1 month ago and your video turned on a light on me to build one, your carving are very complex and work very well even though you have pasted layers, and I want only one square thing that issue the same beautiful vibe.
    I don't have any experience with wood, but if it works I will be glad.

    • @TheVikingWoodsmith
      @TheVikingWoodsmith  6 лет назад +2

      I used spruce and yes pine should work just fine. :)
      Altough the length between the bridge and the tuners affects the distance between your notes there is no specific distance I aimed for, since this build was very experimental.
      Going with a square design is definitely the saver route for getting the best acoustic ;)
      Also I highly recommend getting fine tuners! It's possible to tune it without them but especially when tuning for the first time the horse hair often stretches and you are off tone the tiniest bit.
      :) Good luck with your build!

    • @TheVikingWoodsmith
      @TheVikingWoodsmith  3 года назад +1

      Sure thing :)
      I used horse hair as well, just order hair you would use for a violin bow.
      You should find white or black one on amazon or pretty much any online music store.
      I found a video of a guy explaning the amount of hair to use and how to put them together:
      ruclips.net/video/ICLelbWyCVE/видео.html
      helped me out a lot, also keep in mind that no two self made tagelharpas are the same, just experiment with tuning and different string thickness until you are happy.
      They also take a lot of Rosin in the beginning before you have nough friction and produce a sound.
      Should you need any more tipps just let me know :)

    how much does something like that cost to have made after seeing the video it gave me the idea of a bass tagelharpa but instead of a dragon you make the top part a demon so you can add the goat horn and if possible add a built in drum you can tap

    • @TheVikingWoodsmith
      @TheVikingWoodsmith  3 года назад +1

      On this kind of design I sacrificed sound quality for looks, so given the end result it would be an overpriced showpiece.
      Not sure how you would implement the drum but I'd say with such an elaborate project + materials at least 1000 bucks.

      About 50-55 Hairs for the lower String and 30-35 for the higher. Make sure you twist all strings in the same direction and adding 3 or 4 extra never hurts because there will always be some weak hairs that break when tuning ;)
