Then here's you fellas 👍😎 I like these harps similar to the Kobyz . Now I want one , and the Macedonian version I like too. And the Kora . Harps are prett underrated in the U.S. We all play electric guitar but it actually compliments it well if you play in open turnings and such . Rock on brothas,😎

    This is fascinating. I have always been intrigued by ancient instruments and how they are built. I have always been interested in ancient songs and sagas. I watched this with keen interest, especially your craftsmanship. My imagination conjures up images of those craftsmen and musicians of long ago who built these instruments by hand. The Viking war drums will be next on my list of things to watch.
    I am not a Viking. I have no Nordic blood within me but permit me to say this. By you building these instruments, you do honor to all of your ancestors and keep tradition and culture alive.

    Colour me impressed, this is certainly way more fancy and high quality than my tagelharpa which I built. I'll add this video to my list of inspiring designs for my future work so thanks a lot for that! One thing to note however, the title of this video is incorrect. Well, possibly it is anyway. There is absolutely no historical evidence whatsoever that the tagelharpa was played by Nordic people during the Viking era of Scandinavia. It may have been but we don't know that it was. The Viking era ended in the year 1066 and the earliest known use of a bowed lyre instrument in Scandinavia was the Jouhikko in the 14th century. There is a Nordic poem called Voluspa dating back to the 10th century which describes a plucked lyre though. I just want to make it absolutely clear that I'm not saying all of this as a criticism to you but rather just as an FYI sort of thing.

    • @volfgangtwins
      @volfgangtwins  3 года назад +4

      Thank you! We’re happy you like our design and build. That’s great that you also create instruments! We understand what you are saying about Viking instruments, but just because there is no proof doesn’t mean it wasn’t so. Vikings were intelligent enough to build superior ships and navigate extremely far distances over the high seas, forge with high carbon crucible steel, and were imaginative creators. We ought to give them more credit for their ingenuity and mechanical minds. Why would they not have figured out how to play stringed instruments with bows? Sure there may not be any tangible proof, partly because most instruments built back then wouldn’t have stayed preserved over 1000 years or even 500 years. Also they were not big writers. Most knowledge was passed down by word of mouth, who knows what has been lost never to be regained. It may not be best to fixate only on what facts scholars have recorded, but apply our belief to the mysterious history that was our ancestors.
      Also just to clear things up -
      1. We are descendants of Vikings. The blood flows in our veins. Let’s keep their way alive!
      2. AND these are our instruments.
      3. That would make them Viking instruments. Haha!!
      Thanks for your input on the subject!

    • @brendanm6921
      @brendanm6921 3 года назад +3

      @@volfgangtwins I absolutely 100% agree with you that we need to give the Viking people a lot more credit than we do. I think it's a real shame how a lot of people seem to think they were just mindless barbarians who did nothing but drink alcohol and go on murder sprees. They were indeed very sophisticated as you say. A lot of misconceptions are floating around about them. I do really hope that in the future there will be more understanding about them and also of other historical people in general. Until then I think you summed it up best by saying to keep their ways alive. I do like your logic too that they are Viking instruments because they were built by people who have a Viking heritage. Well, thanks for the reply and keep up the work!

      @@brendanm6921 Thank you for your support!!

    • @Luredreier
      @Luredreier 3 года назад +3

      @@volfgangtwins The problem with that logic is just that just because something seems *obvious* to us doesn't mean that it did so at the time.
      Bows used as instruments has existed in our part of the world for a long, long time.
      But bows used to stroke string instruments where invented on the Asian stepps and only reached Europe around year 1000.
      So while we can't rule out that the vikings where early adoptors and used the tegelharpa before the official end of the viking age it most certainly did not exist during the majority of the viking era.
      If the vikings *did* know about them earlier then the idea would most likely have spread in Europe much earlier due to interactions that the vikings had with them, and even if there might not have been traces of the actual instruments we'd probably have seen writings from other civilisations that where literate at the time mentioning them.
      Stroking instruments where a innovation around year 1000 making instruments never before seen possible all over Europe, the Middleeast and Northern Africa and they where quite popular.
      The original 6 string viking lyre however where most definitively used during the viking age and where apparently popular among the upper class.
      Anyway, I absolutely love your work, they look amazing. =)

Your method for stream bending is way more badass than mine, I scrounged some large diameter pvc pipe from a construction site, slide it over an old electric kettle, and let it boil with a towel over the top with a small opening to let the steam out and hang the word in it.

    It has to be said that then music is outstanding & I love a man that's good with his hands, I love to make lot's of different things myself, I'm particularly good at cross stitch & making my own patterns, I even made a pattern for Valknut that glows in the dark, the guy that wanted it liked it so much that he's commissioned me to make two more, Vegvisir & Mjölnir that also glow in the dark 🤭

    Excellent video! I love and appreciate "functional art" as I am a professional builder of reproduction flintlock firearms. A weapon, musical instrument, or piece of furniture should be a part of the artists soul and show beauty, creativity and function. Well done, can't wait to see more of your project videos

      Thank you! Glad you enjoyed our video, we will have more project videos coming in the near future. We’ve enjoyed shooting Flintlocks in the past! Very impressive to build them from scratch.🤘🏻🤘🏻Some of the best craftsmanship tricks we’ve learned were taught to us by gunsmiths, skilled workers of wood and metal. SKÅL! 👊🏻👊🏻🐺🐺

    *First of all, I think it's great that young people are still involved in instrument making and are maintaining traditions in this field in particular🙃*
    From the perspective of the instrument maker, I have two more comments 🙏🏻
    Why are the the top and the bottom so thick? For sound reasons, doesn't it make more sense to make the top significantly thinner? The instrument can never resonate or vibrate optimally with such solid wood🙏🏻
    The horsehair strings should be twisted against each other in several small strands - then they last longer and become more stable🙏🏻
    Nevertheless - respect for your twin work 🙏🏻It's really great when brothers harmonize like that and share a common passion.
    Even more manual work and less machine work would be a good goal for you for the next instrument - then it will be even more authentic🙃 Greetings from Germany 🙏🏻

    Beautifully made instruments! And with such a gorgeous sound, too! What kind of wood did you use for the body/sound pieces? I will suggest one thing for the bows: The more the bow is used, the more the horsehair will fray and break. Either have a backup bow handy, or there might be another way for you to re-string your current ones without all the hassle. --from a violin player
