I really like that the rare Pokemon are a mix of strong and weak. It makes the world feel a lot more real and gives it some character. How would it make sense that all of the rare Pokemon are also very good at battling?
Farfetched's rarity can be explained with lore, Farfetched's backstory is actually pretty sad, it was common a while ago but because it was delicious people hunted them to almost extinction.
He only did that cause he loves it one of his catchphrases is “Hail Yea” and that’s just “Hell Yea” but with the word hail, why hail? Castform Hail Form.
I kind of get Johto having so many weak Pokemon, since it's treated more like an expansion of Kanto rather than a completely different region. Almost every Kanto Pokemon is available in Johto, and for the most part, Kanto Pokemon are gonna make up a majority of your Johto playthrough team. The same is true for other prominent Johto trainers.

Very true Though I NEVER EVER see people defending Diamond, Pearl or Platinum but when obvious flaws about any other Generation are pointed out jump to the rescue...🤣🤣🤣 Physical Special Split, Stealth Rock, Toxic Spikes, making useless unevolved Gen 2 Mons finally usable (Gligar -> Gliscor; Yanma -> Yanmega; Murkrow -> Honchkrow; Misdreavus -> Mismagius) Still, it's all good, hating on Gen 4 seems to be a past time for most people...🤣🤣🤣 Anyways, yes they actually planned to discontinue the franchise or game series with and after Gen 2 so what you're saying makes a lot of sense! Gen 2 has MANY flaws but that's why we love it and Pokémon❤❤❤
But if people get that and why Hoenn has so many water routes... Then why don't people get Sinnoh not having many Fire Types as the very cold northernmost region of Japan, Hokkaido...? People really hate on Gen 4 a lil too much.
I like the idea of weak and rare Pokémon. It's realistic as weaker animals are often facing extinction. I think it would fun if a few weak Pokémon were so rare, that the Pokédex didn't cover them, and the professor in the game was surprised about their existence. It would be a nice bit of lore if later games showed their numbers going up, do to breeding efforts to save them.
"Amazing [player], your ditto and it's poor tuckered dong have singlehandedly brought [pokemon] back from the brink of extinction. You deserve a reward." [player] received one full heal. "Ah [player], there you are. There's no time to explain, your breeding effort has been too effective. We need to reduce the number of [pokemon]. I have three methods." There are two reasons why alomomola isn’t the evolution of Luvdisc. First, the out-of-universe meta explanation, which is that Gen V was dedicated as a sort of soft-reboot of the series and has lots of design counterparts between it and the previous four generations, such as Trubbish and Grimer/Koffing (Trash/pollution), Jellicent and Tentacruel (jellyfish), and Purrloin/Meowth/Skitty (cats but make them feral). Luvdisc and Alomomola both play into the same archetype of sunfish. In-universe, they evolved convergently. Convergent evolution is when a single trait (e.g. wings) appears in multiple unrelated ways (insect wings vs bird wings vs bat wings). Clearly Alomomola and Luvdisc both derive some sort of ecological benefit from being pink and heart shaped in their environment. The obvious conspiracy response is that they forgot Luvdisc existed when they were designed Alomomola.
Not competitive, but I remember Wobbuffet being my MVP when I first faced the E4 in SS, despite it being 20 levels lower than the rest of my team. I will always respect Wobbuffet.
@@ColgatetheTogekiss Well, Wobuffet is a double-edged sword. It can be very useful in Nuzlocke but it is also very hard to use and, definitely not for the people who are impatient Im on the same board as Mikey cuz while Wob is fun for competitive, it's not fun for playthrough and really worth if you just want to do a regular playthrough unless you want to mess with it for fun
Castform is honestly pretty fun to use compared to literally every other Pokémon on this list. I legitimately put a Castform on my Hoenn team and it helped a lot.
Exactly! That just goes to show that a person’s favorite Pokémon is too rare to justify their rarity and isn’t worth using if you don’t care about that Pokémon.
For the Johto swarm pokemon, it's even worse when you consider how to activate them in the first place. You had to have a specific trainer register on your pokegear then have to wait for them to call you and tell you about the swarm that would last until the next day.
Just as stupid was it that you got next to no evo items in GSC aside from I think the bug catching contest and in crystal, specific trainers calling you.
Imagine, somewhere in an alternate universe in the pokemon world there's an animal tuber making a video of the 20 rarest animals you should not catch. It's just not worth it for the animaldex.
Blobfish are extremely rare animals, only found in deep waters near Australia & New Zealand. But are extremely weak and easily outclassed by nearly every other fish in the area.
To add insult to injury, even after Murkrow and Misdreavus were made available before beating the League in HG/SS, you still couldn’t use them in a Johto playthrough since the Dusk Stone wasn’t obtainable until after getting the National Dex.
Most stones are really difficult to get in Johto. My last SoulSilver game, I beat the league with a vulpix and a weepinbell. HG/SS are great games, but their flaws are kinda annoying.
Tbh johto dex deserves to br trashtalked. Especially the cindaquil line. Their stats are 1:1 copied from the charmander line (I still love cindaquill and johto, but the region oberall is incredible weak, you have countless better kanto options in the game, the gym leaders mostly dont even use jotho pokemon and the level curve is terribly designed)
The dex was generally garbage. One of the core cool things in Pokemon is to work up a guy and evolve. See what you get. This gen had so many random no evo guys that had no point. I think babies did (and still) have no point. Just dumb gen
What Farfetch'd has going for it in Kanto, and what I think helps make sense of its location, is that it can learn both Cut and Fly. This is the point in the game that you will be getting both of those.
#8 Dunsparce... When I was younger, I thought it evolved into Gligar. I had an obsession with only catching base forms, and never catching evolved forms, because the anime made me feel that I'd have a better bond with pokemon I leveled that Dunsparce, ignoring my friends who said it doesn't evolve, until I eventually either gave up or found out online
Damn I did that also I cried when i finally got it to lvl 100 and it didn't evolve so I looked it up online and that's when I found out also did the same thing with Shuckle sadly.... my childhood was filled with 😞
I personally think wobbofet is so rare because it can kill at least one Pokémon on your team so if it could pop up all the time it would be extremely difficult to make it through a cave
It's also got banned from OU and went to Uber tier because of one single broken ability. Shadow tag. Which locked your opponent out of the game and with mirror coat and counter shengains it could do some serious damage if you got trapped. Possibly costing you the match. It deserves to be rare.
Farfetched’s low encounter rate makes sense imo. Because to find a duck that already comes with a leek is quite rare, dare I say, farfetched. Jokes aside, farfetched’ name and design is based on a Japanese expression that something is unlikely. So for it to have a low encounter rate keeps with the name.
Farfetch'd might not be worth it in gen 1, but in gen 6 it is an awesome team member. It gets Air Cutter at a low level, which in Kalos let's you get berries off trees. It also learns False Swipe by level up for easier catching, and can be used as your Fly Pokémon. Also is not hard to find. Definitely a good choice for any Kalos team.
Also lore wise, Farfetched's backstory is actually pretty sad, it was common a while ago but because it was delicious people hunted them to almost extinction.
I always liked how they managed Farfetched in the Kanto games. You trade it for a Spearow, so immediately it’s more powerful. However, if you would have just kept Spearow & trained it, it would become a Fearow, which is significantly stronger then Farfetcted. I always took it as the games way of saying “give stuff a chance before you get rid of it for a quick power buff, because in the long run it will be more helpful.” Essentially, it said you need to put in effort if you want the better option. I always liked that message, even if it wasn’t intentional.
Actually, Misdreavus helped me beat Red. When I was struggling against him, I caught a Misdreavus, leveled her up once and was able to take out his Snorlax which was the hardest one to KO. She learned Mean Look and Perish Song. I also love her design
It's funny I actually remember having the in game trade Farfetch'd on my 1st ever team in Pokemon Blue, mind you DUX only had one purpose, even tho my Charizard was my powerhouse, and was basically the only team member that battled, he couldn't freaking Fly yet (thankyou Yellow for fixing that by the way) so that's where DUX came in handy Also, side note, last night I watched a Pokemon Journeys episode that was focused on pokemon trades. @@ethantreadway9478 Victory road would've been better since that's a place you'd look for a possibly strong, rare pokémon. It's in a single patch of grass, out of the main way, on the top of that mountain you go *once* to for story reasons for like 10 seconds and have zero reason to visit again, so unless you notice that patch of grass, you don't even know there's something you missed. Meaning you'd have a missing pokémon like no trainer uses, with only one location you might not even notice exists. It's honestly insane that Emerald Tate and Liza use 3 psychic types with levitate, but instead of using the fourth one to have give the player an inkling that that pokémon exists, they used Xatu instead. And there, they don't even have the excuse of "programmed like 3 seconds before release" because it's the third version glow-up. If I were to fix Hoenn gym leader teams, replacing the Xatu with Chimecho would be one of the changes.
"Let's take a step back for a moment and look at Farfetch'd itself. Its Japanese name is made up of kamo (鴨 or カモ), meaning 'duck', and negi (葱 or ネギ), which refers to a variety of green onions." "There is a second meaning to the phrase, however. A duck bearing a green onion is a creature walking naïvely towards a nasty fate, and the idiom has come to refer to individuals who are easy to deceive. One dictionary gives the meaning 'along comes a sucker just begging to be parted from his money'. As a result, somebody who is easy to take advantage of can be referred to in Japanese as a kamo (鴨) or 'duck'." 10:05 fun fact, this is the Pokémon that took out Cynthias final Pokémon for me in brilliant diamond. Coco would’ve been taken out by the garchomp had it not been for the ridiculous friendship I had with it and the Shell Bell. Long story short I used fly because if Coco could take a hit from it or was faster somehow, I didn’t want her being taken out if the garchomp survived. She was not faster, but friendship allowed her to survive on one HP as she flew up and took it out without a friendship boost. It was low health so that contributes to how she took it out in one hit, but it does not change the fact that she was the one that won the championship in Sinnoh for me. So I have a respect for the murcrow

Rare Pokémon are just like rare animals: they are struggling to avoid extinction exactly because they are somehow weak.
You can obtain Farfetch’d before the electric gym in Kanto because it is intended to be used just to teach it cut, which you need to enter the gym and the rock tunnel.
There are more mons that get Cut and are more useful, and available at the time,,like Meowth(especially in FRLG because of Pickup) and then Persian is pretty okay if you don't have a Normal/Flying type, and until Snorlax...
That’s true, but I think that farfetchd is that weird because it represents a Japanese saying that is said when something really weird happens but it ends up being helpful. The saying was something like “as useful as finding a duck carrying a leek when you’re hungry”.
@@AlldaylongRock Meowth can't be learn Cut in the Original games. The only mons that can learn Cut in those games are Bulbasaur, Charmander, Oddish, Bellsprout, Sandshrew and Farfetch'd. But considering Paras has an abysmal 5 and 10% encounter rate, you might not even stumble upon one.
I would argue that gifted pokemon that can be bred shouldn't be considered rare. If fact they should be just under starter pokemon in rarity. You have to catch every other pokemon that's in the wild, meaning that's one extra step than a gifted pokemon. I couldn't call a pokemon that's gifted to you AND breedable rare in any sense of the word.

In a minimal defense of Luvdisc, at least you don’t need to catch it to get the heart scale. Thief will work just fine so long as you remember to remove the scale each time you get one. Frisk will also help tell you if it’s even worth using Thief. So in terms of actually catching any, you just need one for the Dex entry if you’re so inclined.

It's rare *because* it's so weak

I kind of get Johto having so many weak Pokemon, since it's treated more like an expansion of Kanto rather than a completely different region. Almost every Kanto Pokemon is available in Johto, and for the most part, Kanto Pokemon are gonna make up a majority of your Johto playthrough team. The same is true for other prominent Johto trainers.
I headcanon that Johto was once a colony of Kanto, and was called "New Kanto".
My original teams on HeartGold & SoulSilver were all Johto Pokemon

I like the idea of weak and rare Pokémon. It's realistic as weaker animals are often facing extinction. I think it would fun if a few weak Pokémon were so rare, that the Pokédex didn't cover them, and the professor in the game was surprised about their existence. It would be a nice bit of lore if later games showed their numbers going up, do to breeding efforts to save them.

I still don't understand why alomomola isn't the evolution of luvdisc.
I thought it was when I was younger
@@Repook we all did
Agreed
There are two reasons why alomomola isn’t the evolution of Luvdisc.

Panda is exceedingly rare and difficult to breed, but they’re completely competitively outclassed by the more common Bear types Grizzly and Polar.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Blobfish are extremely rare animals, only found in deep waters near Australia & New Zealand. But are extremely weak and easily outclassed by nearly every other fish in the area.
Even with the law of infinite universes, I highly doubt that.
Red pandas are very rare but they are a bit worse than their much more common racoon variant
To add insult to injury, even after Murkrow and Misdreavus were made available before beating the League in HG/SS, you still couldn’t use them in a Johto playthrough since the Dusk Stone wasn’t obtainable until after getting the National Dex.
I’d still use them in HGSS. I like Misdreavus more than Mismagius and Murkrow is perfectly fine on its own even before the evolution.
The best part is that the dusk stone is in Cerulean cave. A place you can't access until you beat all the Kanto leaders.
Surely you can use Pick Up?

"A duck comes bearing bunched onions" is the translated expression, and Farfetch'd's Japanese name, Kamonegi, is a shortened version of it.

I always liked how they managed Farfetched in the Kanto games. You trade it for a Spearow, so immediately it’s more powerful. I always took it as the games way of saying “give stuff a chance before you get rid of it for a quick power buff, because in the long run it will be more helpful.” Essentially, it said you need to put in effort if you want the better option. I always liked that message, even if it wasn’t intentional.

Chimecho is friend-shaped.
"Let's take a step back for a moment and look at Farfetch'd itself. Its Japanese name is made up of kamo (鴨 or カモ), meaning 'duck', and negi (葱 or ネギ), which refers to a variety of green onions."

A duck bearing a green onion is a creature walking naïvely towards a nasty fate, and the idiom has come to refer to individuals who are easy to deceive. One dictionary gives the meaning 'along comes a sucker just begging to be parted from his money'. As a result, somebody who is easy to take advantage of can be referred to in Japanese as a kamo (鴨) or 'duck'."

I have a major bias for Dunsparce. I had one in my most recent Ultra Moon playthrough and it clutched my fight against Lysandre in the postgame. It survived on 1HP for 5 turns against Yveltal. Thank Arceus for Pokemon Refresh!
Holy crap, that's a formidable dunsparce. My dunsparce in my first soul silver playthrough was the one to defeat Whitney's Miltank.
My husband wanted to get me flowers and I told him they were a waste of money. He said he would find a way to get me flowers that I would like, and I didn't believe him. So fast forward about a month to Valentine's Day, and he said he had a Pokemon to trade to me but it was a surprise. It was a Cherrim! ...I guess he was right, because I fell in love with her.
While Cherrim is one of those special Pokemon for us because of that story, I know she's not all that great in battle. I mostly used her for contests and cute things like that.

Considering Bellsprout and Sandshrew are Blue exclusive, you are pretty much boned if you chose Squirtle in Pokemon Red, since then the only options are Paras, Oddish and Farfetch'd.
In the case of Luvdisc, I use the move thief. My pokemon steals the heart scale, and kills it at the same time.
Sameee, i always use a pokemon with frisk (to find the heart scale) and thief to steal it. Of the pokemon doesn't have a scale i just run
Mikey: "gets robbed"
Also him: NO..... well anyways
He's used to Grunty boi's shenanigans
Can we talk about how Luvdisc should evolve into Almomola? It would make them a lot better
I'll never understand how GameFreak didn't go for that.
3:30 in defense of farfetch'd, it is a normal flying type that has access to the move Cut, which is needed to get into the vermillion gym. desperate for quick use of cut and don't want to waste it on a key team member? it's... easy?
"Delibird has no gimmicks" and Mikey is getting coal for Chrismas

@@THEWolfBlade3622 It's signature move is it's gimmick.

@@Jdudec367 I mean it's a gimmick, it's just a really bad one that you can barely call it a gimmick. It's like how unown's only gimmick is that it only learns hidden power, and it doesn't have the stats to make use of the move properly. A gimmick that just isn't possible in gen 8 due to the move cut.
@@michaellarose4913 Well it's easy to call it a gimmick since it's it's signature move. Wait really? They cut the move out? That's surprising, did they cut Delibird itself out then?

Re: Farfetch'd Trade in Vermillion
I like to imagine Farfetch'd are actually native to Johto and since Vermillion is a port city, travel is fairly easy and this is just a case of someone bringing pokemon home from other regions.
I think licktung is a Sinnoh pokemon and all the Johto pokemon you find on Kanto are in reality Kanto Pokemon
Yeah i think you are right. I mean, that at least can explain the low encounter rates (Or Route exclusive encounters) for some weaker Pokemon in a region.
You can basically make the same argument for the Pokemon that can only be found in Safari Zones in a region.

Beldum: Same rarity as Mewtwo
I got so angry that I couldn’t catch one that I used a master ball on it
They're not the same rarity, you can still get more than 1 beldum per game, wich is more than mewtwo by default, Beldum is just absurdly hard to catch and using a masterball for it is honestly fair
@@An_Entire_Lime wtf- i used a pokeball on it on the first turn and that's it- it got caught... Also if zekrom is so hard to catch how the hell did i catch it with a pokeball on the first turn in black 2 just an hour ago?- MY LUCK!

When you thought the catch rate of that Pokémon is High, but it's actually Low...
Mikey: "A FOOLISH MISCALCULATION!"

I think from a worldbuilding standpoint, farfetch'd makes sense. It being hunted to near extinction canonically would drive it to further routes to get away from people who might want to kill it. The few people who have it for trade are poorly placed, but farfetch'd being so rare and so hard to get even when in the overworld makes so much sense when looking into its dex entries!
