The "wooing" in question was between Henry VIII's son (prince Edward) & his infant grandniece (Mary, queen of Scots). Henry wanted to unite Scotland & England under one monarch. Since Mary was an infant, Edward was a child & he was fully grown, he expected to be wearing the pants in this diplomatic relationship. Scotland was unimpressed. They sent Mary to France where she married the dauphin, Francis. After he died, she moved back to (now-Protestant) Scotland & married her half-cousin lord Darnley. He was a terrible husband & Mary had him killed, for which she lost her crown to their infant son, James. He would later become James I of England.

Yes. Katherine Howard and Anne Boelyn were cousins. They were also related to Jane Seymour, though more distantly. Catherine Parr (The surviving one) was also Catherine of Aragon's (The first wife) goddaughter. Parr then went onto marry, get this, Jane Seymour's Brother Thomas Seymour, who sexually abused Elizabeth I but that's not the point. When Henry 8 died Catherine Parr had a bunch of ladies in waiting and took some more to her estate to help her. One of them was Lady Jane Grey, who was the niece of Henry 8/first cousin once removed of Mary 1, Elizabeth 1 and Edward 6. Hold on it gets wilder. Edward 6 was apparently very close to Jane Grey, as they were a similar age and Eddy's sisters weren't really part of his life, except for when Catherine Parr was Queen, cause she wanted them to be actual siblings. In reality, Catherine Parr is the only reason we got Elizabeth 1, as she made Henry reinstate her as an official heir. Anyways, Jane Grey, so when Eddy dies, he makes Jane Grey his successor, probably under the influence of Jane's father and Jane's husbands father. Anyways it's unknown if Jane was ever truly Queen, cause around 9 days after she's declared next-in-line and possibly unofficially coronated, 30-ish year old Mary 1 rocks up, declares her unfit for the crown, deposes her, then throws her in the Tower of London where she's beheaded. Jane's father, father in law and husband were hung drawn and quartered or something, I think her husband may have been torn apart by rope pulled by oxen, I don't remember, and Queen Mary 1 is crowned queen, where she outlaws Protestantism, kills anyone who doesn't convert, keeps having miscarriages or dead babies so her husband leaves her and finally dies of probably cysts or cancer. She's followed by Elizabeth I who's thankfully not insane and goes on to rule for 60 years. Also each of the Wives of Henry 8. Catherine Aragon died of cancer, most likely in her heart, Boleyn was falsely accused of adultery, witchcraft and treason and was beheaded, Jane Seymour died of childbirth complications, Anne/Anna of Cleves lived the longest, far away in Germany for a bit, but came back to England cause she and Henry became friends, and died most likely of cancer and was apparently good friends with Catherine Parr, Katherine Howard, Edward 6, Mary 1 and Elizabeth 1, Katherine Howard was 19, most likely forced into a sexual relationship Thomas Culpeper (Who was her Distant cousin...ewww) and was beheaded, and finally, Catherine Parr outlived Henry, got pregnant with Thomas Seymour's kid, Mae/Mary Seymour, and died because people didn't wash their damn hands when women give birth. Then Mary Seymour died at age two. Sorry for this fucking essay, I love the Tudor's and I love SIX the musical and I love Catherine Parr cause she was an early feminist and overall badass.
Hi@@VestigeGG You got most of that right But I'm going to point out that Anne of Cleves didn't go back to Germany and that she actually lived out the rest of her life in England. I know that a small mistake but I just wanted to point it out. Have a nice day

Actually Henry VIII was very much taken with the beautiful young 'Spanish Princess' Catalina (Catherine of Aragon) . They were even betrothed when Henry was 12. It was the dight over her dowry between King Ferdinand of Aragon and Henry VII that took so damn long for them to marry. After Elizabeth of York died, he considered marrying Catalina himself partly because he was taken with her and partly because he didnt want to lose her dowry, half of which had already been paid in golden plates (actual plates..like dinnerware plates lol) However after abput 6 or 7 years of bickering between the 2 kings. Henry VII became ill and on his deathbed he told Henry VIII he could marry whomever he chose. He chose Cataline, the future Queen Catherine 7 years his junior. He couldnt wait to marry her. If they were allowed to have married sooner perhaps she would have given him a son or two...who lived.

Jack Rackam the production quality certainly has improved by bounds, but what i enjoy the most is how your narrative style improved while still keeping tonal consistency throughout the years. But enough of my ramblings, happy holidays Jack and a delightful new year. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication.
I just realized something, out of Henry's three options, he oddly made the right choice. NOT SAYING IT WAS A GOOD CHOICE but it was the right one compared to the other ones. Option 1, Marry Mary and hope for a grandson as soon as possible. Mary never had any children, and most likely died of Ovarian cancer. Option 2, Have Henry Fitzroy legitimized. Henry Fitzroy died at age 15 of Tuberculosis. And Option 3 is History, which gave us queen Elizabeth I.
Well, maybe Mary could have had better luck if she tried at an earlier age. We wouldn’t really know how it would have went because we can’t change the events and I am too lazy to study up on Ovarian cancer and what it can do to childbirth to put here, so maybe in an alternate timeline, Mary would have had children。
@@kikispears4749 Exactly. Politically, England had been gunning for a Habsburg marriage for /years./ Henry VII had initially betrothed his daughter Mary (sister of prince Arthur & Henry VIII) to Emperor Charles V, but the marriage was called off. Then Henry VIII's ministers tried a do-over on that marriage and tried to wed Charles V with the new King's daughter, also called Mary (sister of Elizabeth I), in the hopes their eventual child would inherit England. Those marriage plans never materialized, since Mary was declared illegitimate and was replaced first by princess Elizabeth and then by prince Edward. Since she was out of favour & without any claims to anything, Mary was effectively prevented from marrying anyone. She was eventually put back into the line of succession via the influence of Catherine Parr, but she and her sister were still considered illegitimate and so she was only able to marry when she ascended the throne on the death of Edward VI. She was 37 years old. The person to which she had initially been betrothed was now dead, so she married his son, Philip II of Spain. Mary loved Philip & desperately wanted to believe she was pregnant, but Philip didn't much care for his wife, & seems to have brought out the worst in her (Bloody Mary she would be called, for implementing oppressive policies on the recommendation of Philip). They never had any children. If Mary had married to Charles V at a younger age (17-20), then history would be profoundly different. Had they had a child (we have no reason to think Mary was totally incapable of having children, but I suppose it's possible), England may have been incorporated into the other Habsburg domains (Spain, Austria, the Netherlands, etc.)

Hi@@VestigeGG
You got most of that right
But I'm going to point out that Anne of Cleves didn't go back to Germany and that she actually lived out the rest of her life in England.
I know that a small mistake but I just wanted to point it out.
Have a nice day
@@tailsandpenny1495 Fair enough. I know she went back to Germany for a little post Divorce and I only know about her friendships and death. Thanks for the info
@@VestigeGG I thought Anne of Cleves didn't like Catherine Parr?
@@mjpeng6516 it’s not really well known. They apparently danced together at events when Cleves attended, but we have a ‘probabal’ Howard Letter that said she didn’t like her. But that was written when Henry and her first married, personally I believe they became friends overtime
Came here for the Annapantsu vocal cameo, stayed for the absurd and funny historical storytelling
MORE WIVES YOUR GRACE?
GET ME MOAR WIVES 'FORE I PISS MESELF
As Henry got older actually more and more noble ladies across Europe turned him down. Talking about a reputation
honest to god man, you deserve ten times the subscribers you have right now at least. your videos are well-made and your humour makes them even more engaging. keep up the good work, my dude
Okay the sweating sickness doesn't sound that bad but
Just imagine, no air conditioning, terrible medicine, and sweating through your underclothes and sheets, if you were lucky enough to afford them
Imagine sweating yourself into dehydration
Pastime with good company playing in the background.
Nice detail.
I genuinely shouted 'Whoop!' When I saw this.
Henry's life is one of the most hardcore CK2 playthroughs i've ever seen.
The devotion Henry had to his Catholic faith cannot be understated. It is reflected to this day in Anglican churches.
Literally just here for Anna’s voice
That's fair
3:18
5:09
Huh, both Annas had the same voice. I wonder if all three Catherines did, too...
You deserve like, a hundred times the subscribers you have man. Your videos are engrossing and hilarious. Hope you get the recognition you deserve. :]
To think I was just watching ' Wolf Hall ' ( I know, it is more about Thomas Cromwell, but still ) ! What a coincidence....
You might recognize a couple of the background images in this episode!
@@JackRackam Yes, I did ! I've seen some places from the countryside !
In case you're wondering about The War With The Creepiest Name
It's called The Rough Wooing
King Henry VIII was one of the earliest recordings I’ve known of someone getting catfished. Interesting. Probably has happened to plenty of early nobles when the term wasn’t even a thought in their heads.
your editing is hilarious. Just loving it😂
It did always confuse me how a devoutly catholic king who wrote a book on how important the pope was would create his own church that only existed to not have a pope
Great to see the Father Joe Rogan makes an appearance in this one.
Anna voicing both Annes
Wow
"WE'LL MAKE OUR OWN CHURCH, WITH BLACK JACK AND HOOKERS!" Henry Vlll, probably
In fact Henry and Catherine were pretty much in love, there´s a letter written by henry
where he expresses his desire to marry Catherine, "even over other women" , the only reason he left with Anne was because he wanted a male heir.
Love your stuff. You make history fun. But I miss your rapid fire narration. The best part for you is I had to watch it more than once to get it all. Oh look! I can speed it up in the settings. Keep up the good work. Glad to see you back!
That was brilliant - loved it
To be fair to Henry the 8th he did start the Royal Navy
I wish he could of talked about Charles Brandon
I just took a college course on Tudor and Stuart England and not going lie the constant revolting of Ireland was so accurate
*HENRY HENRY HENRY*
Even their mouths move like his wives in that video!
Henry and Catherine actually loved each other for the first years of their marriage
I love history! You my friend just got yourself another subscriber :)
Thanks!
Damn. Very happy about this episode :D
The Editing makes this even better
Great, informative, and funny videos as always. Hate to be a nitpicker but when you showed Henry's dysfunctional family around the time Edward was born, his other illegitimate son, Henry, was already dead at that point.
Nitpick away! I should've paid closer attention to the dates
The Papacy: The Church will decide your fate.
Henry VIII: I am The Church.
Papacy: Not yet
Henry VIII: It's schism then
And that, my friends, is how the C of E started
Keep up the good work man!
2:57 - and it remains one of the British monarch's titles to this day. It's on our coins!
Love your vids. Keep it up!!!!!!
Your commentary is everything!! Soo clever & humorous! Love it
Adultery is not allowed in England.
Henry. Also cheats on his wives
Me: Disappointed sighs.
In case anyone is wondering Henry’s religious argument for annulling his marriage to Catherine is Leviticus 20:21
(Runs around frantically because nearly all of his favorite "not often uploads" youtubers have uploaded before he can)
Who are the others?
That demoman charge in the Scotland bit was gold, ngl
Dude, your stuff is so good. I love this point in history and all of your videos are pretty fantastic! I hope you get popular enough soon that you can do this full time (though probably not on RUclips since their system makes everything hard)!
Thank you! It'd definitely be a long time before ad revenue provides any kind of living income, but with sponsorships and a little extra through crowdfunding I might not be that far off!
The greatest Christmas gift ever
Thanks Jack
Ho ho ho!
A video on Thomas Moore would be hella interesting
Oh HELL yeah, it's another Jack Rackam!
Got to love the Brady Bunch montage. Fucking hilarious.
"3 popes ago"
The average reign of a pope in Tudor England is now the SI unit for time
HELP I READ IT AS THE KING WHO BROKE THE COUCH AND NOW I DONT KNOW HOW TO FEEL
It's all right, I wouldn't be surprised if Henry brike a few couches in his day
The wrestling match was a weird Celtic resurgence, because the styles the kings employed were Cornish and Breton, respectively...
Watch out Jack, Oversimplified just made a video about Henry 8th
@MARM315 like what?
@MARM315 Hmm, similar language to the knew oversimplified video. Anyways, even if they were on good grounds first, they ended up divorcing. So he isn't wrong.
It really does make you wonder just how things would have ended up had Arthur not died
I know, right? Or if he'd had a son!
Funny enough Henry was meant for a church career (celibacy and all...)
Oh wait I thought the skull meant you were dead (Worset Joke Ever I know)
Just happy you continue making great videos.
Why do I find these portraits of historical people hovering all over the place so damn funny?
Jethro Tull as the background music? Oh fuck yeah.
WELCOME BACK
OOOOOOOO a video finally
Can you do a video about 'Mad Jack' Churchill? He fought in WW2 with bagpipes, a bow and a longsword, escaped more than once from a concentrationcamp and was furious that the war ended.
Good stuff as always and subscribed to ur pal !!
The war pope the best returning character of the show.
“Tutoring Tudor England” three times fast
Jack is the kind of guy who makes everything wrong while simultaneously being surprisingly accurate.
You should do William the conqueror, sargon of akkad and charlegmaigne
An Englishman decides his wife’s head is getting too big for her shoulders
Me an Arab: wait that’s illegal
Finally it all comes together. From king of France to king of England.
So weird hitting the Field of Cloth of Gold again, but my goodness has the animation improved! I love feeling like I'm creating some kind of cinematic universe even though people in history just interacted with each other
Jack Rackam the production quality certainly has improved by bounds, but what i enjoy the most is how your narrative style improved while still keeping tonal consistency throughout the years. But enough of my ramblings, happy holidays Jack and a delightful new year. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication.
@@michelsand5399 Happy holidays Mr. Sandman!
Good queen bes is one of the best Queens England had
@@bocholotthethird3159 agreed.
I’ve noticed people who have three or more spouses over a lifetime tend to be bad eggs. Henry VIII is a shining example of this principle in action
I came here for Annapantsu and i realized she was in this video
Why am I only now finding this channel??? Maybe the algorithm has finally started getting its shit together, only recently have interesting and actually relevant channels been recommended.
Could you do Timur the Lame or Tamerlane I think that would be a great episode
You should really have far more subscribers.. You have prob my fav history channel
See hearing "you should have more subscribers" at 100 subscribers was nice, hearing that at 68,000 just blows me away
Thomas More would make a great episode.
Make a video about Catherine de’ Medici I guess...
Aw, NOTHING on his plan to marry Mary I to her half brother?
