  • This is not intended for speaking Greek but for learning the alphabet as needed when rushing a Greek letter organization in the United States. I am aware that pronunciations may vary, for example depending on whether it is a male or female greek letter organization.
    Brought to you by the GRLs of Gamma Rho Lambda, Epsilon Chapter at California State University, Northridge!
    Mnemonic device to learn the Greek alphabet:
    Alpha, Beta, Gamma Delta, Epsilon, Zeta, Eta Theta, Iota, Kappa, Lambda, Mu, Nu, Xi, Omicron, Pi, Rho, Sigma, Tau, Upsilon, Phi, Chi, Psi, Omega

    Fraternities and Sororities chose Greek letters because when the Colleges first allowed them on campus, they were REQUIRED to change their names to Greek letters because the knowledge and culture of Greece were apparent in academia in America.

    and for the one's annoyed by the mispronunciation, let's learn it first then worry about the way it's really said. I just need it now!!

    For centuries, Greece was considered the birthplace of philosophical ides and values that most academia and Greek Organizations hold today. Most Greek Organizations chose the three letters in order to signify what their most important values were, For instance if their values were "Knowledge, Character, and Loyalty," their letters would probably be ΚΧΛ. Most organizations keep these letters today because of its long-standing tradition and to remind them of their values.

    As a side note, a bunch of the guys were clowning on me for using this little semantic device to learn the Greek Alphabet, but the rest of the pledges fucked it up royally and at least I got the whole thing right the first time.
    You Officially rock.

    And since the English alphabet originated from Greek letters, even if we used our own letters, they would still be "Greek" in a manner of speaking. As for being Jewish, not all Americans or Fraternity or Sorority members are from Jewish faiths.

As a "pledge," I remember having a hard time trying to remember them all with my fellow "pledge" class brothers. I am now the Sentinel of my Chapter and plan to let all future new members know of this technique. Two thumbs up!!!

    Technically, most Fraternities and Sororities like their members to worship a "God." Technically, the term "God" could refer to any power higher than yourself. So if someone was to believe in the String Theory, they would be believing in a type or form of "God."

  • @marli8907
    @marli8907 13 лет назад

    @Foreever4 why do people not read the descriptions to videos before posting about them so they clearly have NO idea what the heck they're doing? Why not research into it first? (this isn't to learn Greek it's to learn the alphabet for pledge purposes for "greek" organizations such as honor societies, fraternities, and sororities.) Just because you never got asked to be in one doesn't mean you should post negatively for those helping others.

    Fraternities and Sororites would be forbidden to use such Aramaic or Hebrew letters because since America was founded on the belief of freedom of religion, we had a law to separate church and state institutions. By using Aramaic or Hebrew letters, it would make the institutions seem religious to one of those two religions. By using Greek letters, commonly associated with academia, Fraternities and Sororities could co-exist without expressing any religion.

    As for you being prejudice, how can you talk about those sorority students talking about Greece being about drinking and fun when you yourself rationalize both Sororities and Americans without meeting different ones? For all you know, it could be just people from the Netherlands that act that way. Also, how can you talk about Americans not having respect for Greek culture when you slander and group us all into the same category?
