- I knew that Avi Kaplan split from Pentatonix a few years ago, but I just hadn't gone to check out his new solo work. How embarrassed I am that I waited so long. This is AMAZING!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Avi Kaplan for the first time, performing "Change on the Rise”.

Thank you so much for all these kind words! I love how in depth you went musically and vocally. I’m honored that you chose to react to my solo music and that you truly felt it🙏
Avi ❤❤ he's just a decent human being
We love you, Avi. As a Baritone who leans bass, I just soak up all the music that you put out.
You know - its impossible not to feel your music. Its like an emotional cane for one which mind keeps struggling with life in general. Thank you for your voice and lyrics.
Wow, Avi commented :). Big fan! Ordered a t-shirt from your store last year, all the way here to Sweden. Wish you the best!
You are my favorite and I think you have incredible talent ❤️ I just listened to your song The Summit and was totally blown away. Thank you for always making me smile
You may not be aware, but Avi was an opera major, theory/composition minor in college, trained as a basso profundo, and had been offered a position with the Los Angeles Opera just as he was recruited into Pentatonix in 2011. He was also considering a career as a music director, and still pursues that in a way, doing workshops at high schools and universities. He's also co-founder, along with Ben Bram and Rob Dietz (both arrangers and composers themselves) of the A Cappella Academy, a 10-day intensive music camp held every summer since 2014, where kids 12 to 18 from all over the world learn vocals, performance, theory, and specialties like beat-boxing and bass singing (often with sessions by Avi). Avi has said that ACA is his proudest achievement so far in his life. Just to show you why he's so proud, here's the full ACA choir in 2019 performing Avi's original song, "The Seed". ruclips.net/video/XZ89BHmRfws/видео.html
Hi again, Charlotte! I'd love for her to react to The Seed! :)
Thank you very much for that. That performance made me tear up. Awesome 😃
Always a wealth of knowledge Charlotte. So very proud of our Avi. He is a true giver.
He did a HS “competition” workshop of sorts in Riverside Ca, in or around 2018. My daughter was in one of the school choirs.
Wow, so amazing. I have mad respect for Avi.
Bass voices fully mature around age 40. Avi is only 32. I can't imagine how much more rich his voice will become. Tim of Home Free and Geoff of Voice play are both 40. Quarter past Four is one of his best original songs.
I love Quarter Past Four. When I first heard it. I listened on repeat for well over an hour.
As a bass, I can concur with the voice not getting it's full resonance until about age 40. I have had a chest range that extends to E1 since I was a teen, but didn't reach the ability to project well below B1 until I was in my 40's. Avi's voice is so powerful at C2 (his low note on this song), it slips past a lot of people the note is actually that deep. You just rarely hear someone with that much power and clarity at C2... this is the area where a lot of average bass voices fake it with strohbass or if even in pure chest voice, their larynx is so low it darkens it... he is still singing with a neutral larynx.
He's on a whole other level than those bass voices, blows them away in terms of tone, resonance and musicianship. This guy is really special
Avi, his music is being true to himself... I will always like Pentatonix, but they have become very commercial and Avi has gone his own way... Avi's music reaches into your soul ... it is amazing... I have followed him since he left Pentatonix and his work is magnificient.
Become very commercial?...Okay if you say so.
I thought commercial means you only care about how to make more money and produce what you thought people like and put no efforts in you own thing or don't care about creating, well...if spent almost 2 years on an original album called commercial, I really don't know what's not for them...or for most people in general?
I mean, they didn't become, they've just always done pop music, flashy things... they didn't really change, just improved production
@@jonas8993 I 100% agree. It's always what they've done; they just have more money to play with now and can do things they couldn't before with tour outfits and sets and all that.
I feel PTX used to be more experimental with their music, which I suppose made sense as they were exploring their sound in the beginning, and for me, besides their insane talent, it's what made them stand out. They seemed unafraid to go above and beyond, trying out different genres of music and mixing it up in mash ups and in clever arrangements.
Around the time Avi left, they settled down with pop, almost exclusively, and their arrangements became more predictable or formulaic. I think that's when they 'found their sound', and (this is 100% speculation from me) I believe that it might have weighed into Avi's decision of leaving the band.
It's rather a common thing to happen for a band, to find a type of music that suits them and run with it.
Do I think their latest works are bad or commercial? No and not necessarily. Anything can be commercial if it sells. That doesn't mean it isn't well thought out or it didn't take a lot of work to make it happen. They are very talented people and I seriously doubt they're capable of doing 'bad' music.
Do I like their latest work more than I like their older stuff? No. As I said at the beginning, the versatility and risk taking they used to do were some my favourite things from them, and while I still listen to PTX, I feel they lost some of their 'magic'.
I get it.
Otherside is another one of Avi’s best from his solo career.
I always thought of "Otherside" as the aftermath of "Change on the Rise".
Yes, I love that one
Aberdeen is also incredible
Listening to this helps me to understand why being part of PTX with their pop covers and huge venues worldwide began to eat at his soul. Kudos to him for realizing he needed to make a change, your analysis highlighted how much more he wanted to do and was capable of being.
Avi's solo work is amazing. He hasn't put out anything disappointing, but there are definitely several you should check out. It Knows Me. The Otherside. Aberdeen. The list goes on. Great reaction as always Elizabeth!
ABERDEEN most definitely
Also the Alt Versions of It Knows Me and Aberdeen (and Chains).
My absolute favourite is Song for the Grateful. I am in love with that song!
Aberdeen is my favorite!
Chains is my favorite.
Avi’s voice is like when you sit in a comfortable worn leather chair, open a old book with that old book smell and have a nice a glass of nice wine beside you. It’s just warm and cozy
This was Avi's battle song after a long struggle with depression. It is all Avi...that drum beat you hear is him...Avi said he did use an organ in one part where it changes tempo and of course the clapping but apart from those two...all of it is Avi. Layered with his own voice. Just magical...I love the cinematography too. I also feel it has a Native American flavour to it.... Brilliant production. Liked and Subscribed. Waiving from Australia
I am disappointed that both you and Elizabeth think this is Native American. It is native American only to the extent that a war party is getting ready for battle. Avi is Jewish and he is using Old Testament Hebrew imagery, "breathing fire", "you can't tame it", "Jubilee", "Oh Lord I feel the revelling", "Torches", DO SOMETHING? "March (around the walled city)"
@@michaelmclane8501 You may be disappointed that some people feel a different vibe regards Avi's song. I saw so many suggesting it was a 'Viking' or 'War' song my comment was from an image of him dancing in shadow and to me I felt it looks almost like a native Indian dance. I am well aware of Avi being Jewish and as I said in my original comment it was his personal battle with depression etc that inspired him to write this awesome song. I will try to find his interview regards this. So please try to be a little more tolerant with others that have differences of opinions. God bless you.
His original "I'll Get By" is great as well as his cover of "Hey Ya" released as Avriel and the Sequoias. Please add them to your Avi list.
I'll Get By along with most of that album seriously helped me through some of the toughest times recently. I don't know where I would be without his music.
I love the "Hey Ya" cover
Hey ya is really good
Hi Elizabeth, I loved this performance. Avi was outstanding as part of Pentatonix, but his solo work is amazing as he took full advantage of his vocal training and abilities. This song was powerful and he has such a strong, soulful voice. Thank you, Elizabeth!!! 💙
So agree Kirby S.
My first thought: "She's gonna lose her mind". Reckon I was right about that...
Woulda been here for the premiere, but that was 3am in my timezone so yeah nah.
Anyway, thoroughly enjoyed this reaction and analysis. This is one of my favourite songs, not just of Avi's but in general, and it's always a treat to experience my favourite music through my favourite reactors' perspectives.
This song has a special place in my heart as a key turning point in my life and the beginning of an upwards hike clawing my way out of depression one fierce grasp at a time.
Avi and the Sequoias doing their cover of Outkast's 'Hey Ya' is pure delight. I hope you consider giving it a look, you won't be disappointed!
I just love watching you facial expression while you listen.
I was really sad when Avi left Pentatonix but if he wouldn't have done that we would not get this wonderful music....
While he never voiced it, many of us feel strongly that he wasn't "down" with the very commercial route PTX was heading down. He needed to literally voice what was in his musical soul, and it wasn't pop. His influences are largely folk, and it shows in his songs. "Change on the Rise" was released in March 2019 on the same day PTX released "Come Along". Compare/contrast the two videos, both musically and visually. About as different as can be.
Elizabeth: stopping to give us some good info
Me: She needed the break anyways
Always get goosebumps with Avi!
I had the opportunity to see him live and it was hands down one of my favorite concerts I've ever been to. I absolutely loved seeing you geek out to him, that reaction was adorable! Honestly it's impossible not to rock out to Avi. If you're looking for another one of his tracks to listen to I suggest you take a listen to Full Moon, his vocals are INSANE on that one!
I completely agree about Full Moon! I will almost definitely agree about seeing him live in concert when I finally get to early next year when he comes to the UK. I'm SO excited!
Love your reaction 👍👍👍
Very impressed by the fact you realized it's all his voice. No reactor before did 😁 Great ear 😀
He's an outstanding singer with great control and an amazing sense for how to use his voice to create a certain feel.
Check out "Full Moon" by him. One of the best arrangements I heard in a while.
If you’re into choral music, definitely check out “Otherside” and “Full Moon”. Both of those tracks are very stripped and bare-boned, but they’re also so ethereal and dreamy-like with the way Avi has the vocal parts arranged, so trust me when I say you won’t be disappointed. 👌🏻
For Full Moon, I recommend the official audio instead of the live recorded one on his channel first. The official audio has so many layers. I mean, ultimately, I recommend doing both. But start with the official audio. :)
Please listen to his song "Otherside", to see what happens when a bard multiclasses with druid.
Finally! I hope there is more Avi to come! You won't be disappointed!
I LOVE your reaction Avi is a God sent Blessing to the faith
Yesss! Absolutely more Avi! Full Moon has to be my absolute favorite, always makes me feel some strange sort of primal calm
Full moon is such a magical song!
Completely agree!!!
I heard a reactor once say that this should be used as a theme for a tv show and I cant unhear that quality about it.
i think it ll be perfect for a trailer .WIth a little drums boost in betwen
It was recently used in the show "Resident Alien". Towards the end of I think Season 1 Episode 3.
I’m glad that you really enjoyed this song💕 All of Avi’s solo music is incredible 💚🎶💚🎶 He is pretty eclectic. Otherside and Full Moon are calming and almost ethereal. Born in California, Get Down and the Summit are just a good groove. It Knows Me and I’ll Get By are beautiful and inspirational. He has some new music that he premiered at a recent livestream concert. On My Way is a gorgeous song about him missing his family💚 and The First Place I Go is just 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 You really can’t go wrong with Avi. He is such a phenomenal singer, songwriter and person.
Miriam, I agree about the 2 new songs. Hopefully we won't have to wait much longer for studio versions.
Ive had this on my playlist for forever! Still gives me goosebumps. Love Avi!
First Dio, now Avi... she must be picking songs from my 'On Repeat' playlist on spotify lol. Really happy about this one!
I respectfully bow to your taste in music, sir.
Same! Listened to this on my walk earlier.
Your thumbnail reminds me of going to the movie theatre for the first time. Just an innocent glee radiating from your face
that's what made me drop everything and investigate, too.
My anticipation is in full-blown ass-kicking mode! Let's do this!!!
This song always makes me feel empowered to kick anything's butt.
I love, love, love your reactions. Your ear-to-ear grin as you lean forward in your chair, obviously delighted, as you hang onto each and every note makes my heart happy.
You spoke of the 'breadth of sound' that Avi has in this song. I would add that this song, especially, also speaks to a personal depth, a darkness that isn't scary as much as it is vulnerable and organic and earthy because it is tinged with hope and undergirded with a core strength, ominous and yet not terrifying. I expect that this came out of some very personal experiences for him and I appreciate his willingness to be transparent with us enough to let us see in a little bit. I liked your reference to an American Indian tribal feel. I'd also say a bit medieval?
I've heard from other commentators that most all of the vocal is indeed layers of Avi and I love that you picked that up. What talent he has and what an astute perceptive ear you have!
While there have been suggestions that this could/should be soundtrack for Game of Thrones or Vikings, I laughed when I heard it on a television series that I did not expect: Resident Alien, Season 1, Episode 3, about the last 2-3 minutes or so (it's actually a fairly long clip for a soundtrack in a show). It was not what I had envisioned for this song and yet it fit in so very well.
2:33 your reaction and after with Avi's deep gravel mud notes. you introduced me to his lower note after i had heard this over and over. honest reaction channels should teach, gift, sustain, educate... Love This Channel.
FINALLY! Yay! You just made my day! Indeed all the voices are Avi. This song just gets you in the soul. You should watch the trailer for the EP, as it explains a LOT of the emotion on the record.
Otherside by Avi is my go to for peaceful thinking when my mind is feeling mixed and conflicted, I believe you'd love it for many reasons, pay attention to the lyrics, they're so purposeful. ❤️
This is magnificent!!! Never heard of Avi Kaplan before....
Listening to Avi's solo work is like an awakening; I'm so happy you've finally listened to this because you always give the best analyses and breakdowns of what the singers are doing. I can't wait for you to listen to his "Otherside" song, because, where this song is Avi announcing himself to the world, Otherside is where you hear Avi's true spirit, his true artistry.
He's got a crazy range considering how low he can go lol. It's actually insane. I miss him in Pentatonix but I'm glad he's able to flex his muscles a little more and not stuck as a base.
this is my faorite song he has ever done. the mood, the lyrics all so intense. it's my go to song when driving
Change on the rise is my favorite Avi's song. Love it sooooo much and hope you will tooo
👍👍👍🌟🌟🌟🤩🤩🤩
It's an amazing song and I think she'll be blown away. Hope she gives props to his awesome beard.
Mine is I'll Get By. That one got me through some tough times ☺
I have been waiting so long for him to get some love his solo work is fantastic thank you for this
All the voices are Avi, even the choir, just multi-tracked in. I like that very low, nearly sub-sonic, in the background. He did that sound for the soundtrack to Harrison Ford's move Blade Runner 2049, the track called "Wallace". In some parts it takes you a moment to realize the sound is even there, and that it's a real voice, because it's so low yet clean, not gravely like most low voices.
Now you want to hear "It Knows Me". Trust me, you do. "Full Moon" is worth listening to, but very different.
Avi solo > Pentatonix
Seriously, he's so far ahead of the rest that it's not even a fair fight.
I have to agree. After he left, Pentatonix hasn't sounded the same. Their mixes started sounding top-heavy to me, to the point of auditory fatigue
@@Musicownz1997 so true
They're still great, but yeah, they've definitely been missing something since Avi left.
The song has an inspirational beckoning feel to it. I love the fullness of the choir, which leads to the importance of the absence of it.
HEY.... I recommended this. Yay. This song is awesome.
same!
"I get by" is an excellent continuation of his soloist portfolio.
I agree. "I'll Get By" and "Aberdeen" are two of my favorites of Avi's songs. "Change on the Rise" is his best song, so far, though.
Yes!! I’ve been waiting for her to react to this one!
FINALLY!!! I have been dying to see you react to this!!!!
Avi is my fav. I listen all the time. Quarter past four is great too.
This is my FAVORITE song by Avi! So glad you reacted and enjoyed it.
OMG. He makes me cry. This is just so amazing
I am such a fan of this channel but I will admit my first thought when you said you hadn't listened to any of his solo work was "where have you been?". This is one of my absolute favorite things he's ever done. It's such a powerful piece.
Just in case you didnt know, Avi also did the entire baseline for this song and even hits a vocal fry C1 during the chorus which is technically his lowest personal recorded note
It actually isn't by vocal fry (it would sound much different), but it's a growl, a technique he has absolutely MASTERED and knows how to control it incredibly well.
Avi truly is amazing, my favourites are ‘Otherside’ ‘Quarter Past Four’ and ‘Fields and Pier’, one of his latest, ‘Song for the thankful’ is also beautiful.
His voice gives me the chills. I do love his solo stuff
THANK YOU!! I've been dying to hear this reaction!
Technically, Avi didn't leave Pentatonix to pursue a solo career. He had gotten burned out by the group's fast pace and intense recording and touring schedule, was frustrated that the group wasn't even considering recording any of his new songs, AND his mother had gotten very ill. There was a break of more than a year between the time he left the group and when he started recording his first solo album (second if you count the album he made with his side group The Sequoias in 2017 while he was still with PTX). Yes, every voice is Avi. AMAZING layering on this track. This is the kind of music he was holding inside of him his last couple of years in Pentatonix. He HAD to get away from the group to get this amazing music out to the public. Avi's solo material is nothing short of magnificent. VERY soul-cleansing and personal. The lyrics in this song clearly show how frustrated he was in his last days with the group. Now that he's in his own career, doing the songs HE wants to do, the genre and style he wants to do, and at the pace he prefers, he is much happier...and I am very happy for him. And I'm excited for the future of his music. He just released the lead-off single for his next (third actual solo) album a couple of weeks ago.
Avi has natural multi tonal qualities to his voice. I've heard very few singers who have that type of vocal ability.
"Maybe I'm gonna go get my shardblades and destroy evil creatures or something"... Was that a Brandon Sanderson reference? I knew there was a reason I enjoyed your content! 😂 As if I needed another one. 😉
So glad I'm not the only one who got this, at 12:50. Casual reference to Stormlight gets +250 bonus points.
I went looking for this comment as soon as I heard that reference 😁
Dang I wasn't first in about the Shardblade. Cosmere FTW!
Shard blades!!!
I’m so glad that you are doing Avi’s music! He has such a unique sound and I think he is under appreciate for his talent!
Yes!!! More solo Avi stuff. His voice is so magical. His tone is pure and cannot be taught. Awesome video.
I really like Avi's song "Aberdeen" as well.
That was great! I hadn't heard of Avi Kaplan before nor this song, but I'm going to check out his album now.
Love Avi's voice. Love your reactions. You can see your appreciation of on your face.
Love Avi!
Great reaction as always
“What goods a man who’s lost his soul?” Wow - something the men of this world need to hear more than ever. Thank you Avi 🔥❤️
I have typically heard most of what you React to but this is a new one for me. Thank you for introducing me to this song.
Avi's 'It Knows Me' ... my favorite!

This needs to become -- at least temporarily -- the All Avi All The Time™ channel as you catch up with his solo material. :)
Here I am, a year later and after seeing this video you're the best reactor by far for Avi Kapland's (Change On the Rise).
I love it when people who know an art can explain to me why I so instinctively love a piece of art. Thank you for this.
Everything about this sounds like an old southern spiritual. I love it so much.
I saw Avi live. He was amazing.
It will be awesome!!
Avi is awesome ..
Great reaction! So many things you pointed out that I hadn't noticed, although I've seen this many times. I love the power in this, and I can't imagine it being something PTX would do, so it really made his move to solo work seem so necessary. I hope you also react to some of Avi's more folksy ones, like Hey Ya and Aberdeen. Also, his first solo video, Quarter Past Four, is amazing.
THANK YOU so much!!
And my very favorite (so far) is Full Moon Live. Just voice and gentle strum.
Just before pandemic Avi was traveling performing in small, standing venues which included Cambridge , MA ( across the river from Boston). It was so wonderful to hear his Voice vibrating in my chest!! I was all set to buy my tickets for his April Concert in Boston 2020. Of course didn’t happen😞
Avi's voice, music, skill everything.... touches ones soul. Listen to him for hours.
I absolutely love watching the face of someone who truly loves/lives music the first time they experience the solo Avi.
This makes your soul want to sing with him.
Avi Kaplan is amazing
Ohhhh this is gonna be so good!
Otherside is my fav. of him !!! +1 on that Song
I love how you seem to feel music with your body ❤️ i can see how important it is to you. I'm amazed with people like you!
Great reaction! I love your passion & knowledge. I've heard this song a few thousand times & still get goosebumps every flipping time.
Thank you so much for this GREAT analysis! I think you're the only one who's been able to understand that he sang all the voices himself. And yes please listen to more from him, you'll be wonderfully surprised more than once! I don't even know what song to recommend you, they"'re all different and all so good!
When Avi cuts loose as a soloist, rather than just the grounding element of PTX, his resonance is absolutely extraordinary. Some of it is doubtless production, but some of it just his gorgeous voice ringing.
Listen to his live version of New Moon

Love this song and by another singer. I never heard of . That’s why I love this channel , introduced to soo many different groups /singers I never knew
I love how you could see the exact moment when you started fangirling. You got that giddy look on your face. Which is the same one I had when I saw this the first time.
I watched this reaction about a year ago, but I decided to revisit, because yours is my favorite reaction by far. I completely relate to you, as you listen to Avi like tasting the smoothest, richest chocolate. I grew up singing a capella. I couldn't read music, but my dad would play a song to me, and I would teach all the parts to my siblings. Then he would have us perform.
So excited that you finally reacted to this one. Avi is awesome. Great reaction. You really need to check out Voiceplays My Mother Told Me. Geoff hits some mind blowing low notes.🥰
The moment Geoff whipped out that warhorn sound I immediately thought "Elizabeth HAS to react to this!" I'm sure it will happen, just not soon enough for me.

Avi Kaplan has so a rich and good voice :) He comes realy deep with his voice.

Avi is an amazing singer, songwriter. Love his music❤
change on the rise and sweet adeline pt.2 are my favs of avi, but all songs of him are good, for example aberdeen or otherside. his voice is just awesome.
