Desire is, in the end, an emotion, which Mesprit represents. Explosion is a sacrificial move that is known to be the strongest move in terms of pure damage, and using it requires bravery, as such moves are rarely used. The bravery comes from the willpower of the user, which Azelf represents.
I'll never forget the time in Diamond I ran into Mesprit without tracking it, and when the music kicked in, I thought my game broke for a second when the audio cut. My heart had never sank so fast.

Sin oh was my first Pokemon game I loved it. but chasing Mesprit was torture!and just when you think your done with the roaming legendaries BAM! Fucking cresselia comes along and is all "oh hey! I see you just caught mesprit after chasing it for days on end, it would be a real shame if, you had to chase another roaming legendary."

Honestly one of the best unique pokemon themes in pokemon to this date. Just strolling through normal grass and suddenly there isn't any battle music. It just slowly comes in, and then THE BASSLINE. Fuck man my heart was going 300 beats per minute.
