One of our most beautiful songs sung, and played by a wonderful native of Carrick On Suir. R. I. P. Liam.

I've been in love with Liam Clancy for at least 40 years. Used to see the boys in concert in Chicago in the late 60's and early 70's

Thank Mr Clancy, for many afternoons of boyhood inspiration, for providing the soundtrack to my courting of Mairead, though I usurped you on occasions, my wanderings across craggy country with my donkey Rainbow, and for reflecting what Irishness is for me: courage, open-spiritedness and hefty portions of well-watered craic. It is not possible for me to point my brogues in the footprints of such greatness, but I warble in your name and feel good about it.

I believe these are the lyrics:
Areir 's me 'g tearnnamh ar neoin
Ar a' dtaobh eile 'en teora seo thios
Do thaobhnaigh an speirbhean im chomhair
    Dfhaig taomanac, breote, lag tinn
Le haon ghean da mein is da clo
Da breithre 's da beol tanai binn
Do leimeas fe dhein dul 'na treo
Is ar Eireann ni neosainn ce hi.
A gradh ghil bi pairteach liom fhein
Is go hairithe da mbeidir liom scriobh
Beinn ag gaire le ban-chnois na gcraobh
Da bhfaighinn airithe o eine ce hi
Nil a cairde ro-shasta liom fhein
Cun arus a dheanamh na tias
Ach ma tha si d'reir raite mo bheal
Ni nair dom a leamh duit ce hi

It's real simple. When he sings a sad song you feel sad, when he sings a joyful song you feel joy. What more does a great performer need than that?

Ar Éirinn Ní Neosfainn Cé Hí
Aréir is mé ag téarnamh ar neoin
Ar an dtaobh eile den teora dá mbím,
Sea do thaobhnaigh an spéirbhean im chomhair
’Dh’fhág taomanach breoite lag tinn,
Le haonghean dá méin is dá cló,
Dá briathra is dá beol tanaí binn,
Do léimeas faoi dhéin dul ’na comhair
’S ar Éirinn ní neosfainn cé hí.
Dá ngéillfeadh an spéirbhean dom ghlór
Is iad ráite mo bheoil a bheadh fíor,
Go deimhin duit, ná déanfainn do ghnó,
Do léirchur i gcóir ’s i gcrích,
Do léifinn léirstair dom stór,
Is ba mhéin liom í a phógadh ó mo chroí,
Do bhéarfainn an chraobh di ina dóid,
’S ar Éirinn ní neosfainn cé hí.
A ghrá ghil, bí páirteach liom féin,
’S go háirithe, dá mb’fhéidir liom scríobh,
Bheinn ag gáire le bánchnis na gcraobh
Dá bhfaighinn áirithe ó aoinne cé hí,
Níl a cairde róshásta liom féin
Chun áras a dhéanamh ná tíos,
Ach ó tá sí, de réir ráite do bhéil,
Ní náir duit a léamh dúinn cé hí.

  • @stjjmk1971

Last eve as I wandered quiet near
To the border's of my little farm
    A beautiful maiden appeared
Whose loveliness caused my heart's harm
By her daring and love smitten sour
And the words from her sweet lips that came
To meet her I raced the field o'er
But for Ireland I'd not tell her name
If this beauty but my words would heed
The words that I speak would be true
I'd help her in every need
And indeed all her work I would do
To win one fond kiss from my love
I'd read her romances of fame
Her champion I daily would prove
But for Ireland I'd not tell her name
There's a beautiful stately young maid
At the nearing of my little farm
    She's welcoming kind unafraid
Her smile is both childlike and warm
Her gold hair in masses that grows
Like amber and sheen is that same
And the bloom in her cheeks like the rose
But for Ireland I'd not tell her name
