Just one of the greatest songs ever written to describe the vile act of war. The various artists who have recorded this have never come close to Liams.
How the hell can anybody sing this without crying? I can't listen to it without trying to sing along, and since I heard it first in 1989, I've not been able to finish. RIP, Liam.
“The young people ask ‘What are they marching for?’ And I ask myself the same question” - The lyric itself is so devastating and bleak, but his delivery here is exquisite and crushing. Maybe it’s because Mr. Clancy himself was well advanced in age, because there is just so much weight in every glance and frown he shows. I think this is as well as this song has ever been presented.
Man Liam sings this with heart like he is telling the story in the first person. This is the kind of performance you want to close the show with because nobody wants to follow it not even Liam because he drained all his emotion singing it. BTW, I looked at my grandfather's discharge papers from WW1. St. Meheil, Muse Argonne, billers en hey sector, puvenelle sector and Pumy offensive. He nearly didn't make it home. He was gassed several times and once nearly left for dead. He saw his buddies fall by his side. The gave him $141 and $60 more in bonus pay, plus travel pay home. No mention of the mustard gas that destroyed ih lungs and health. He died on my 15th birthday. Now we are close to Independance Day in the USA and I am reminded of my father telling me how my grandfather would get jumpy on July 4th from the fireworks. War is Hell. Nobody comes back undamaged.. Eric Bogle wrote a great song. Liam really paid it a great tribute. It makes me want to listen to Masters of War by Bob Dylan next.
The only reason he fought for Britain in WW1 was because the Brits promised the Irish home rule if they joined the British fight. As usual the Brits lied. Not so unusual that he fought for Irish independence after he returned home. Brrits need to start learning their true history. Otherwise they will always find some events strange when the rest of us know they are not strange at all.
The Englishmen sent the Anzacs to our lands Gallipoli Çanakkale Türkiye 🇹🇷 from very very far millions kilometers away from Australia 🦘 from New Zealand to kill my granddads. Brought here by a book I'm currently reading about historical disasters and came to an entry about Gallipoli, which opens with some lyrics from this song. Beautiful.
A performance that only Liam could render. Heart and soul that only a select few can deliver. May Liam rest in peace.
The finest, most respectful and moving version of this unforgettable song.
No body has ever given a better rendition than Liam.

I cannot hear this song without breaking up.
Me too!
One of the best traditional voices ever RIP Liam Clancy

RIP, Liam.
I'm 70 years old and I'm almost ashamed to admit I've never heard this amazing song before. Stunning.
No shame, no meanness, no regrets, sure you have the next 30 years to enjoy it!
It's a childhood favorite of mine. I first heard this song sung by ronnie drew when I was around 10 or 11. I love the way Liam sings it as well.
The original is by Eric Bogle, an incredible Scottish singer and songwriter who emigrated to Australia.
I wonder ware uve been oldson. I've back catalogue before Luke kelly
I am 70 as well I listen to it at least a dozen times a year. From various artists Clancy is one of the best
We never learn...there is always a war and the accompanying misery. This song says it all.
From a proud Aussie, this has made me even prouder. What a beautiful version of this great song.

Happy St Patrick day.

I was at this show. Forgot how amazing this performance was.
What year was it
And their Ghosts may be heard as they march by that Billabong... Kudos, Mr. Clancy!

My own grandfather (an Irishman) fought for Britain in WW1, yet after WW1 he went to war with Britain on behalf of Ireland to achieve independence.
They lied as always

He sure knows how to tell a story!
Such a powerful song beautifully sad 🪖
This Aussie says thanks you sir 🤟
