Some of the popcorn would still find its way to the fan probably and usually there is only a small space, your best bet would be to find some kind of lid for the airfryer basket.
My airfryer hasn't got an exposed element it has a grill to protect it, is that an expensive one? If you have a rotissetie airfryer you can use the rotating chip basket. Although I would agree a microwave may be better.
the best way is a sauce pan with a little oil, bring the heat up high with the lid on when it pops turn heat to low, shake the pan to make the raw kernels drop to the bottom, when popping slows down turn off heat. Perfect pop-corn, no burns no raw kernels takes 4 minutes

I wanted to do this and I was thinking maybe if you put a metal strainer/sieve (with holes that aren't big enough for popcorn to fly out, but the right size holes to still get air to your popcorn) on top of your popcorn kernels then maybe it'd work. However, I've never tried this and I do know that popcorn needs a lot of space to pop in the first place so it might or might not work. I'll try it soon though, I can let you know if it works!

Yes, people have been doing just this. In the Cosori Dual Blaze, you just take the crisper tray and only put it at the top, w/ the kernels below it.
