    Nice, I bought a Bluetooth keypad that has the same button layout but has a 4 button half height row on top minus the turn dial. I still need to map and print out labels to glue to the keys tho.
    I like what they're doing but they need a way to label the keys. Maybe swappable labels under clear caps you can rearrange.
    I wonder if you can map a key to toggle 2nd functions to the key like how num lock and caps lock work. Having that LED would make a great indicator to tell users what key set you're on.

    I got the Huion 610 Pro V2 because of the affordable price, modified the 16 function keys and put dotted stickers on each key with a drawing of the tool or the function it does. Ever since I did that, I noticed my hand never touched the keyboard

    Hate to say it, but not being able to do key combinations was an instant no on my end. Real pity. Would have been useful if they had made it so you could actually do shortcuts with it. Kinda seems like an overwhelmingly important thing for them to have overlooked when making a device dedicated to shortcut keys.

    • @digilocker

      Purchased yesterday as my Xp pen ac19 driver was causing mouse stutter when using with any huion. The combination keys aren't as big as a deal as I thought. You just have to work out what works best. Z for example is only 1 for zoom so no big deal. Some additions have also been made since the video I think. You can move the preview button or remove it (just an option). There is also a radial menu you can use as an option to bring up to add an additional 6 commands (can even pin it). Found this great for things like warp or deselect etc
      Biggest con for me is actually the lack of backlighting for the keys as with no markings in the dark its not ideal

      I don't use this exact remote, but I actually prefer to set entire combinations for each key instead of pressing multiple keys. That way it becomes program-agnostic. So I know that a particular button will always switch to the lasso tool, whether I'm using Krita or Photoshop or anything else. I don't have to remember different combinations for different programs, I just set it to switch automatically based on the program.

    • @artbygabe
      @artbygabe 2 года назад +1

      @@mistermastermind528 a keyboard is fine but the whole purpose for these short cut keys is centralization and the ease of use of your most used tools/functions. With a keyboard often times your tools will be spread out (and yes, I know you can change your short cut keys in each program's settings) but I want centralization for my hand, so that through muscle memory my fingers can quickly move to the tool/function I want. To be honest the best device I've found so far for short cut keys is the ShuttlePro v2. Even beats Wacoms little remote, I think. The ShuttlePro's scrub wheel is what really sets it apart from others.

      'No combination keys' is not much of a deal breaker for me. If I wanted combination keys, I would just stick to what is already set on my laptop's keyboard and the software I am working with. And I agree with Gengu and Gabriel. 1-button presses should be a good example of making life easier with less to think about after setting the buttons and memorizing the button layout.

  • @zinzolin14
    @zinzolin14 2 года назад +4

    Real shame this doesn't work with combo keys. I have my tablet hooked to my laptop and it's kinda tiring to reach all the way to press the a shortcut. I guess I'll hold off buying the keydial for the time being and think of purchasing a wireless keyboard instead. Thank you for your review.

      Razer makes a small gaming keyboard. Try looking into it. It is much better than this as all keys are customisable and have backlighting. I think the wheel is missing but I guess you can make it work out.

  • @PlazDreamweaver

    My only 2 issues with it are:
    1. No left handed design (technically right handed, but I mean for left handed artists like myself)
    2. The dial portion often stops working (multiple times per session), and I have to constantly go into the settings and choose a different setting, then turn it back to the dial setting.
    Otherwise, it's been great for me, although it feels cheap. Like it's made out of really cheap plastic and paint, which was disappointing given the $50 price tag ($60+ after fees).

    • @littleripper312
      @littleripper312 3 года назад

      I haven't had the dial stop working yet but one thing I would check in your settings is that it has a sleep option. I would change it so the device doesn't go to sleep. If it's not that then that sucks, I hope mine doesn't end up doing that! Here in Canada it was $75 on amazon so it's pretty expensive but I'm loving it so far.

  • @The_Curious_Cat
    @The_Curious_Cat 3 года назад +6

    Nice, I've been looking for this for a while, since I don't have much space on my desk and the dial is very handy.
    I have a couple of questions:
    - When you press a shortcut to a tool (for example the brush), can it be configurated so the dial automatically is to adjust brush size? Or the dial only goes to that functionality when you press the middle button to choose it?
    - Can the KeyDial be used in other programs outside of 2D or 3D applications? Like Premiere or Davinci, for example?
    Thanks in advance for the answer and great review.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  3 года назад +2

      1. Pressing the shortcut for brush will not automatically have the dial control brush size. You will still have to switch the dial (press the middle button) to adjust brush size if it's not already using that function. Usually for me I only configure one shortcut for the dial and that's to change brush size.
      2. You can use this with other software

      @@teohyc Cool, thanks for the reply. Pity about the dial not being directly connected to each tool, it makes sense since it makes it flow better while working. I hope they can implement it on the software updates in the future (or at least the option to make them work together somehow).

    What I like about wacom one or clip studio one or even the new xencelabs remote is that they seem to be comfortable to be held in hand while the ones like this can only lay on the flat surface where space is already limited and we have keyboard. I personally use a very small gaming controller 8bit zero, it’s perfect for artists on budget and to hold in one hand, it’s great for the most important shortcuts. Also I can customize it for iPad and for different computer too while this one unfortunately can’t do that. Nonetheless very helpful review. We know this review is "old" in YT terms, but we hope you can help us with this.
    When we change the dial between the different commands by pushing the button, what it changes to is displayed on the bottom of the main display, not on the Kamvas pen displays we use. This is irritating because we have the Kamvas raised up on a Kabcon tablet stand to get it off the desk and it hides the changes when it's in front of the main display.
    Our question: Do you know of a way to get the KD100 prompt to display on a pen display instead of the main display? We would think Huion would've done this by default, but as far as we can tell, no.

      I use a Contour Design ShuttlePRO v2 on my PC ($99) for video editing for my modest kayak fishing channel, and it's amazing! Scrubbing on the Jog Wheel only requires CTRL+R and CTRL+L key combos, and has seven programmable positions in each direction that can iddividually macro-up a repeat of the sent commands at higher rates of speed, so the further you twist the jog, the faster the rate of video scrubbing. Anyone who's ever used a shortcut programmable keyboard for art knows that two or three button commands using modifiers are necessary; ctrl+backspace zooming on photoshop; brush resize using the tooltip on SAI or clip studio, and lets not even talk about more complex hotkey mambo such as the floating color hud on photoshop (which includes a mouse click and I have conveniently mapped to one key on my corsair keyboard)
      What disappoints me about this gadget is that it's great on theory. But it's functionality ends up nerfed by an incomplete implementation.

    Can really no one come up with a remote even close the Wacom ExpressKey?! It's been years and the offerings are pathetic.
    Hell, to be better any such product could have worse build quality but actually have a decent ring/dial and offer bluetooth support as well as via a dongle.

    Instead of this just buy a half keyboard, it's much better and cheaper. You can configure your drawing program to use shortcuts just in that half of the keyboard (the most frequently used are already there anyways), and since half keyboards have control, alt, shift, tab, space, etc. you literally have hundreds of possible shortcuts. Just search amazon for "half keyboard", there are some for less than 20 usd. The only drawback is that they don't have the windows key (you don't need it anyways) and some don't have the option of turning off the RGB LED, because these are "gamer" products.

      People tend to forget that there are a lot of left-handed users out there (especially in the art world). Using normal keyboard shortcuts just doesnt feel comfortable when using your right hand while drawing with your left, as most shortcuts have been created for use with your left hand.. Devices like these help bridge that gap.

    • @joseph-montanez

      @@sikarin_co2463 As someone who is ambidextrous, there is nothing wrong with a one handed "left handed" keyboard. I would argue that moving all the keys primary keys such as control, alt, shift, etc where my right hand thumb is far better then my left hand where my pink is doing most of the work. However you could look at "V BESTLIFE Single Hand Keyboard Mini Gaming Keyboard One-Handed" on Amazon, unified layout, still registers as a keyboard so you can use it anywhere. It looks like the Logictech G13, without the issue of needing drivers. Given that the G13 doesnt work in all applications, and Logitech no longer supports configuration in their latest software (GHub), I worry for spending money on hardware that will stop working in 5 years, if I update Windows/MacOS.

      Don't underestimate the scroll wheel on these things. Brush size and zoom tied to a wheel is a massive productivity increase for people who paint full time. I swap brushes and resize them thousands of times while working on a piece. Instead of tapping away at a key trying to nail the right size, it's a millisecond finger swipe. No tool swap for zoom (button is already under the finger) nor hotkey tap to avoid tool swap (dial does it). Plus, zooming can be tied to cursor location- so it's possible to navigate the file visually very very quickly by gesturing with the stylus to your focal point and then spinning the zoom wheel. Same motions used to paint, making it very efficient.
      It's also wireless, which adds to the cost for any device. Lastly, the size is a big selling point. It's comfortable and can be "attached" directly to the tablet- which has a lot of benefits for posture, health (wrist/elbow issues are exceedingly common for full-time artists), comfort, and productivity.
      Plus just being the right device for the right use. No fiddling with changing established hotkeys and such, no unnecessary keys wasting space. Etc. It's made for artists, not mixed use. For like $20 more than a dependable half key, this all adds up to being worth it imho.

    • @teohyc

      You can set keyboard shortcuts to the clockwise and anti-clockwise movement. With Photoshop, you'll have to set R to a button and move the mouse to rotate.
      For Affinity Designer, you'll have to set the keyboard shortcuts to the two rotating movement. Not sure if you can do really fine adjustments instead of the 15 degree changes.
