      Duran was kinda sloppy compared to Chavez.. Chavez had the best body movement and a better head movement than Duran.. but if you ask Chavez he will deny that he was that good.. although he did do more than a lot of other Legendary boxers in many ways, he stays humble and doesn't consider himself the best like other boxers do.

      budfr Agreed. That was thrown at Chavez when he was undisputed no.1 pound-for-pound by the biased US fight media who took against him because he wasn't American and didn't speak English. They were desperate for an US fighter to beat him. Fact is Chavez, like most Latin-Americans had virtually no amateur career (Whitaker and Mayweather jr had hundreds of fights) and essentially learnt his trade as a teenage pro. Many of his early opponents may have been no great shakes but Chavez was likely giving away a lot of years and experience to them, so it's swings and roundabouts. Mike Tyson, who was an accomplished amateur fought a lot of "bums" early on but nobody ever mentions this, somehow. Roger gives Chavez grudging respect for his "great chin", which seeing as he was brutally KO'd in their first fight and beaten down second-time around is the very least he could do! He "had to have something" apparently or "he'd would get knocked out all the time". What an idiot! I've seen fighters with a better chin than Chavez who had vastly less success. Fact is a great chin was just ONE of his many assets. Roger, as a very experienced top-class pro and now trainer should really know this. He sounds bitter that he lost to a much better fighter, simple as. First fight he landed some big shots early in the second round but Chavez started throwing big counters as Roger punched and pulverized him. Second fight he was 10lbs heavier, more solid, experienced and knew Chavez was dangerous. He took less risks and lasted 9 rounds but, let's face it he was battered in that fight.Like many US fighters/trainers/analysts he also thinks great defence is exclusive to boxers fighting off the back foot, moving and swaying away from shots - the Ali model I guess. It is virtually impossible to attack relentlessly (like Chavez) without getting hit. But he had a great defence, just a different style.

    • @killcancer6499
      @killcancer6499 6 лет назад +3

      Donte Burgess Chavez fought bums? Many times it's very difficult to get a win over a tough club fighter in his hometown with out the KO, and many of those guys ARE tough. When you are not an Olympic golden boy that is where you must start. Just ask Hagler, he was robbed twice in Philly early in his career. I also disagree that Roger was giving Chavez his due. He will only admit that he had a great chin. Chavez brutally KOd him the second round of their first fight, and made him quit on his stool in the second fight. He was a lot more than a slugger with a great chin.

    I always did like Roger as a fighter. He wasn't afraid of anyone and fought his heart out. What a fight that would be if Chavez were in his prime today and fought Floyd (If they were the same size). The best defensive fighter of all time vs the toughest fighter of all time. That would be an interesting matchup for sure. The biggest problem would've been getting Floyd to take the fight. He most likely would've avoided fighting a fighter like Chavez

      E Cervantes - I partially agree with you been P.R., but boxing is more than just style, it requires skills and when a boxer can make you miss and outscore you in the process it merits recognition. It doesn't make a fight as exciting as a toe to toe brawl, but it takes skills to impose your style and win.

Mastery of fundamentals leads to superiority of boxing skills. These men were master boxers. Where they separate themselves from other countries is the fact that they have choose to use their supreme skills and display them by FIGHTING. People tend to forget that BOXING, at the end of the day, IS A FIGHT.

Also, study a prime Julio Cesar Chavez and notice his skills in the arts of self-defense notice his use of parries, the bob&weave,slipping punches and countering. Watch his ability to block punches with his elbows and catch them on backside of his gloves. This is what boxing is all about---SKILLS.
