Floyds quickness and fight IQ to hit gaps in the defense is amazing, and beautifully complimented by Agustus’s twitchy slips, consistent jab, and unorthodox movement. so i guess people don't know why the commentator is so against emanuel augustus, so let me explain it briefly. emanuel's style was always disliked by critics, commentators, and basically anyone who was at the top level of the business. they thought that his style was disrespectful to do in the ring, because they view that his style takes away from boxing's legitimacy as a highly technical sport, and didn't like changes to the orthodoxy of how boxing is supposed to be done. Old people don't like change, so when they see someone straying so far from the accepted norm, they don't know what else to do but be against it. many of emanuel's fights went to decision, and were given to his opponent despite emanuel being the clear winner
This is still my favorite fight of all time. I watch it a couple times a year and notice new things each time. A perfect matchup between supreme technical skill/conditioning and instinctual wildcard energy. Each a master in a completely different way. While Floyd handily showed The Drunken Master that skills are king, Augustus gave him some amazing work and a well-bloodied nose. No clinching from either, just beautiful boxing and unrelenting heart from both men for the entire fight. So happy that TR put out a remastered version of it.
This was high level technical boxing between 2 fighters in their prime that should be used to teach kids how feinting, parrying, framing, among the other little nuances like Emanual switching between orthodox and southpaw. It’s a shame how bad the commentating was, really could have been used as a teachable moment in real time to show its viewers what they were actually seeing and how lucky to be seeing this fight on free TV.
