  • Rep. Gloria Johnson destroys Tennessee Republican Ryan Williams and the GOP for their awful bill that would allow teachers to carry guns in school. Johnson bashes the TN Republicans for not understanding what goes on in a school, wanting to add extra, unnecessary responsibilities to teachers and so much more.

    As a teacher who has been teaching for 42 years and still teaching in Trenton, New Jersey. I have to say that to bring weapons into a classroom is an insane idea. Even with my military training, I wouldn't even think of bringing a weapon into a classroom even if it's for defense. I learned in the ARMY that bullets trajectories do not always end where they are supposed to. Anything can change the outcome of a projectile, even by the most accomplished shooter. So, this idea that you can train teachers to protect schools with a gun is a dream, I meant to say a nightmare.

    There was a school in Texas where the superintendent left a gun in the restroom. It was found by a 3rd grader who left it behind and told his teacher. She sent another 3rd grader to check because she didn’t believe the student. Only when the second student came back and confirmed there was a gun in the restroom (and thankfully left it alone) did the teacher go and get retrieve it. In that instance two 3rd grade students were more responsible than a superintendent and a teacher. I shudder to think what could have happened if they weren’t.

    There are a million things that can be done that will actually work. Teachers teach period. They are not security. You want to hire security but oh we can't afford it. Here's a novel idea. Add a tax on the purchase of firearms and ammunition. I'm a gun owner. I am also a believer in the 2nd amendment but not the perversion of it. It should be difficult to purchase a weapon. There are far too many people who probably shouldn't have one owning one. The right to own a firearm is a fundamental responsibility and not an unfettered responsibility.

    • @00tree
      @00tree Месяц назад +1

      Agree on every point. I’m also a gun owner. They are not paraded around like trophies of my manhood. Guns have one purpose, to destroy a target. Once something is destroyed, it’s very hard to put back together. That is a that that every gun owner should always have on their mind when they touch their firearm.
      At gun shows, you used to have one or two weekend Rambos in a GI Joe cosplay that everyone else was looking at like he was an odd duck. Now they make a large bulk of the attendees. People don’t take ownership of their firearms nearly seriously enough. These are not toys, these are weapons. Treat them with the care and respect that the danger of their presence brings.

    The way legislator's, government, and parents treat teachers is appalling. Teachers are the reason this country, no, the world is were it is today. No one who is successful would be were they are to day without the dedication of a teacher. It only takes one special teacher to touch a child in that special way only they posses, to change that child's life forever. Schools are understaffed, under funded, and disregarded when funding time comes. But do those in charge disregard their personal needs? NO! They raise their own pay while cutting funding to schools that are already underfunded. And people wonder why more and more parents are giving up on schools and home schooling their children. ECUCATORS are the only people qualified to govern, litigate, and run educational systems. So stop voting for the inexperienced and make certain those we vote into positions of reasonability understand the scope of the job they have been given.

    I wouldn't give guns to any teacher. The psychotics, ne'er do wells, and men damaged by two world wars I was taught by, shouldn't have been allowed board rubbers. I had several who were deadly with them. Another was an an art teacher, with the sobriquet "Killer", who possessed a Spanish Fascist officers sword, he'd taken off a prisoner he'd taken in Catalonia. He had a habit, if someone wasn't paying attention, of quietly taking the sword out from wherever he had hidden it. Then bringing it down in the centre of the desk. My brother who'd was older than me, have me a heads up about this habit. I thought he was just exaggerating, until my first art class. When I sat at my desk, looked down to see, that the centre of the desk top looked like it was a butcher's block!!! Then I saw him action, about a month into my first term at school. When a guy called, of all things, Puddephat, was looking out the window at a lovely early autumn day. Then Killer did his thing! Scared the bejesus out of me, I thought Puddy had had an heart attack! He went as white as sheet, and promptly threw up on the floor!

    I see this as an excellent opportunity to make better choices. Team up you can have classes in movie theaters and young mothers it an opportunity to share the work but provide a safer space for students. We need a national movement to get this done and end the NRA’s MURDER of our children. So like teachers can alternate when a teacher can’t work and maybe some mothers would volunteer to sub here and there. All the time planning , breaking grounds for more gun free schools.

    Do teacher assaults on students still outnumber school shootings in Tennessee? If so giving guns to those teachers doesn't sound very smart does it?

      Currently in Europe, where school shootings are not a problem.
      We have had less people killed in mass shootings in the last 20 years than you have had in this year alone……and yes, there is private firearms ownership here before you say ‘but you don’t have guns!’.
      Kids in European whoops have fire drills once every 6 months, not active shooter drills, because there is a greater likelihood of a fire.
      I take a shopping list with me when I go to the shops, not a firearm.
