Just switched from Steam to standalone for all the right reasons and loving it for the known reasons. However, only to find out Reshade doesn’t work with OpenXR. Such a shame, but hopefully a solution will come in due time.
Thank you for this. Just really started in DCS ( about 1 year now ) coming from MSFS FSX , MSFS 2020, MSFS 2024 etc etc. I was well aware of ReShade and there are many MSFS simmers who use reShade in that simulator. Also many use the new Nvidia app filter settings. But I find the FPS drop to be a problem with the Nvidia app so I dont go down that route. However Reshade in DCS is excellent. Just installed today. makes a big, big difference !!. just taking away the washed out colours in default DCS. I installed reShade to DCS MT. No real FPs hit so far. I also watched the video from "Bogey Dope" so a big shout out to him for his good work. Many thanks for this tutorial and making the setup straight forward. I will experiment with some of the effects but the ones you choose are very good, so will probably stick with those. Much appreciated.
Reshade is also good for people that export the MFDs to a separate screen. The exports are always darker than in the cockpit (a DCS "feature") but with Reshade UI Mask feature you can just make those parts of your screen brighter so your exported MFDs look the same as the ones in cockpit.
Hey man good video but seems like I have a problem with Reshade and DCS : basically when I try to install it and the window that should let me choose the game appears I just don't see DCS listed there. How can I fix this? Thanks!
Sometimes it won't show up there so you have to manually path it. Click on "browse" and go to where the DCS.exe is. For me it's in the "DCS World Openbeta - bin-mt" folder. Or just the bin folder if you're not running multithreading.
Hello, for some reason it wont give me the popup window for tutorial when i install it, and it doesnt respond to the HOME key, i followed the instructions and nothing seems to fix it, ik this an older video but it would be much appreciated if someone could help out.
This is kind of silly but I really dislike that idiots who want to rag on DCS for “needing reShade” to look good. Sorry, that is just bullshit. It’s great that reShade let’s you adjust these things to your liking because more people are having fun. But let’s not be silly and think it improves the game’s graphics in an objective way - all the way to saying “you need this.” Also, funny thing is, if you’re adjusting colors and other basic settings with reShade, you could just as well be adjusting your monitor. So how can we put that on the devs if your monitor is poorly set up? In reality, reShade is just saying you don’t like the opinion of the original artist who probably has a better calibrated monitor than most. Even more tricky, what should DCS really do with the sun? In reality monitors have far less dynamic range output. There’s no way you could see the cockpit under the cloud deck, and then fly above it to direct sun and actually see both without the eye adjusting to let in more or less light, and the human brain processing the visual impact differently. Games only emulate such adjustment effects when they are being cinematic to show the human perspective.

You know, I never did check those out in DCS so I had no idea they didn't work. I tried the filters in MSFS but still preferred ReShade to be honest, but I know a bunch that prefer the Nvidia filters in MSFS.
If you run the process again, installing reshade, after you select your game .exe if it has already been installed when you click next through the menus it will take you to an uninstall feature. Click, yes, for uninstall and then next.
There's definitely a lot you can tinker with. Nothing wrong in staying with the base settings, it still looks great! It's all about personal preference.
When i boot the game i don't have the menu open at the top of my screen I've tried reinstalling and all the stuff like that. Does anyone else have this issue?
No, DCS is currently still DX11, they've just manually added multithread/multi-core support. Previously at most DCS would use "3 cores", 1 for 'game', 1 for 'sound' and 1 sometimes for modules that hard coded certain features (like the m2000 radar). Now it (mostly) properly spreads the load of all the bullshit tasks like scripts to other cores, and leaves the render pipeline (the shit that actually matters for frame rate) on a single core. with SteamVR you can technically force DX12, however this literally does nothing except cause problems, as its just running DX11 through a DX12 compatibility layer. Vulkan is "coming soon" but we still don't know when, they promised it to us LAST YEAR, yet here we are without and and half-ass implementation of MT that tends to CTD waaay too often.

@@BlackHornetSim Well, the rule may have changed but, I know for a fact that Hoggit and GS wouldn't allow reshade at one point so, I just uninstalled it. It's great for personal recording and SP play, tho.
There's no way for the servers to detect that you're even running reshade, it doesn't interface with the game in a way that the anticheat or the pure client checks can possible check.

5.7 doesnt appear in the vr toolbar using mt for me, 5.0 works in non mt though, any ideas why? im using valve index btw
I've heard there's issue regarding this and VR. There's this however, I hope it helps. forum.dcs.world/topic/312893-reshade-working-with-openxr-opencomposite-and-pimaxxr/
Base game looks better lol … i wonder if reshade’s SMAA or FXAA is better though. That’s where DCS is awful.
I personally prefer the reshade. It all comes down to the preference and if you enjoy the base game. Just trying to show there are ways to shade it if you'd like, definitely not trying to change anyone's opinion. Happy flying!
reshade for vr doesn't work :(
Sorry man, that's too bad.
Does this work in VR? The MT version of DCS only supports OpenXR now. As it should.
I do not believe it does unfortunately.
@@BlackHornetSim That is a bummer, I hope Reshade will support OpenXR one day. It looks so gorgeous.
Has the vr version been updated to work with openxr? Or do you only use in 2D mode?
Not too sure on the VR, I only use 2D and TrackIR
Any performance differences?
Minimal, I haven't noticed a hit on my FPS at all. It's a quick uninstall if you're finding it bogging your PC down.
Looks pretty nice! Do you know if this work in MP servers or will you get tainted ?
That's definitely a good question. I will test it shortly and let you know.
@@BlackHornetSim nice! Tnx a lot man :)
Not a problem. I logged into a populated multi-player server and flew around for a while with no issues. I also searched a few forums and was able to find this as well, forum.dcs.world/topic/254194-reshade-with-multiplayer/
Hope this helps 👍
@@BlackHornetSim tnx a lot for the help and advices! Im going to install shaders now and play with them :)
Happy to help! I hope you enjoy.
Thanks… is it VR compatible?
I hear conflicting reports. I hear it works for SteamVR while others you have to download an older driver from reshade and it works.
forum.dcs.world/topic/312893-reshade-working-with-openxr-opencomposite-and-pimaxxr/
I didn't get the list
Is there an online forum that has a lot of reshade setting presets we could try?
I believe on their site they have forums for a bunch of different profiles people have created.
@@BlackHornetSim oh nice!
The DCS MT executable isn't working for me. I managed to get it to open one once somehow but reshade didn't load, so I'm just using the regular version for now. 4090 and 13900KF so I'm still getting 150+ fps, just curious how it would run in MT mode
Interesting....You're machine in on steroids lol I'm curious if you would notice as well.
@@BlackHornetSim NVM I figured it out. Had to select MT preview in steam general launch options
Does this make any difference in vr?
Does this work in VR wit a quest2 ?
Do you have to reload the program after every update?
Nope.
it's not working on VR, how do i activate it to work for VR as well? When i launch and toogle it on and off it's changing only the mirror (monitor) effects, and not that in the HMD
what preset you are using?
hey @scanman87 i installed reshade, it shows on my flat screen but does it work for vr?
Hey buddy, it does work for SteamVR for sure. If you're using another VR try following this forum. I do not have VR, so I can't experiment.

Hello, I have struggled with the reshade, with the multithreading update it does not work for me in VR, in 2D perfectly and with the version that is not multithreading it works for me in both VR and 2D. I have done everything and nothing at all

Do some servers restrict reshade?
I can't confirm. I was flying around in Growling's server yesterday with zero issues. I would say it's best to check the server rules, however I did find this forum.
forum.dcs.world/topic/254194-reshade-with-multiplayer/
wow really a nice improvment, really bumed though that it didn't work/apply in VR.
I hear ya man, it's super unfortunate. I have yet to venture into VR but undoubtably I will one day soon.
@@BlackHornetSim: That's unfortunate since I just went VR and am trying to clean things up a little better, still learning the tweaks so hopefully something works there to sharpen things up better.
New to this, but I did noticed that my HUD is harder to see with my current reshade setting. WIP.
I don't use curves anymore. I found that warped certain colours.
does it come at a huge performance cost?
Nope, not at all. I don't even notice it.
What about VR . ??
does it lower the performance?
If only the Filters worked on Geforce Experience in DCS. After all these years, Geforce Experience filters still not a thing.
You know, I never did check those out in DCS so I had no idea they didn't work. I tried the filters in MSFS but still preferred ReShade to be honest, but I know a bunch that prefer the Nvidia filters in MSFS.
@Scanman87 Filters are great, the Sharpen Filter I use exclusively for everything if I can. Really helps identify targets better and farther.
Does it aid in spotting enemies aircraft and ground units?
It'll help sharpen the picture, if you find it blurry. I wouldn't go as far to say it'll help with spotting targets though.
Helo Hounds has a reshade setting for just that.
I can not use it with multi Thread Version
Make sure your DCS version is on OpenBeta, not the "release" version.
Make sure you're using the right version, stable vs open beta. Also make sure you are selecting the DCS.exe from the "Bin-mt" folder.
So does this work VR? If so, do you take a framerate hit.
Does this work with VR?
I found this on their website regarding VR, albeit a year ago.
ReShade only supports SteamVR, it specifically does not support the Oculus runtime.
do you think you could get away with 32gb of ram with all of this on? Or do you actually need 64gb
I believe you could, yes! Definitely doesn't hurt to try. If your FPS suffers as a result, it's a quick uninstall.
Works fine at 32 and uses no where near all of it. Does use gpu though.
Thanks buddy 👍
How to uninstall?
If you run the process again, installing reshade, after you select your game .exe if it has already been installed when you click next through the menus it will take you to an uninstall feature. Click, yes, for uninstall and then next.
I found it too detailed to figure out the best settings
There's definitely a lot you can tinker with. Nothing wrong in staying with the base settings, it still looks great! It's all about personal preference.
When i boot the game i don't have the menu open at the top of my screen I've tried reinstalling and all the stuff like that. Does anyone else have this issue?
nm just got it working lmao
@@WaterComputer how
Unhelpful, I use the website one, Is there any other path you can provide
This works in VR now?
I have heard it works great, yes. I don't have VR so I can't confirm.
I'm also curious if anyone has experience with VR and Re-shade. I find VR to be very washed out looking.
@@l8knight845 A gentleman in a DCS group I'm in on Facebook confirms it works well in VR.
@@BlackHornetSim That's great. Thank you!
No worries man 👍
Anyone know how to get Reshade working in VR?
There's this I found online. Hopefully it'll help you out.

@@BlackHornetSim thanks fpr this!!!.. Spend hours.. Looks like old version works for VR
This game looks like you have clouds in your eye if you play without reshade. I know you can lower gamma but the menus look terrible.
Same in MSFS too. Looks stunning once you're in game but the menus are terrible.
I've read news that DCS's API now are directx 11, 12 and also is using Vulkan (should be the one for multi-thread)
Interesting. I will have to look into that, cheers for the update.
@@BlackHornetSim do you know if it makes any difference when installing reshade and choosing the api option?
@@BlackHornetSim Did you get any answers?
Been running MT since launch and never CTD. Not yet. Have 95% modules and 100% terrains.
Will I lose some frame rates
on all the computers I've tried this on, I've seen almost no difference in frames. May be a bit late but I hope I helped
THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEO NICE WORK I HAVE CONCOCTED A PRESET PLEASE I WILL LEAVE A LINK? THIS GAME IS MAGNIFICENT BUT I AM A NOVICE SO THE FIGHTS ARE NOT YET
Sure bud, I can give it a look! Cheers for the comment!
Great video!! but no offense your microphone sounds horrible
Haha none taken. Cheers buddy.
HYEA :)
Bad thing... the game only needs more advanced contrast control in options not this
All in personal preference. I like having the options ReShade offers.
Reshade is too dark. Base game looks more natural. But thanks for the show.
I found curves threw it off quite a bit, I don't use it anymore. Other than that I find it doesn't make it too dark, but curves definitely darkened it a bit.
i dot think this reshade stuff is good. Looks like CSI Miami or some Hollywood Movies... If you do recording and doing some crazy movies, then it might be fine, but to be honest, i could not be able to play with these colours. I have problems when i am 30Min in Nevada map LOL, imagine those colours every day... crazy
All personal preference my friend.
@@BlackHornetSim yes, thats fact and we can not debate on that. it was only my opinion, as it would matter LOL. thumbs up
A lot of the more popular MP servers won't allow reshade.
Can't say I've seen it mentioned anywhere. Always best to check the server rules.
@@BlackHornetSim Well, the rule may have changed but, I know for a fact that Hoggit and GS wouldn't allow reshade at one point so, I just uninstalled it. It's great for personal recording and SP play, tho.
I was on GSs last night and didn't see a mention of it. I was booting around for a while.
Never once had an issue
There's no way for the servers to detect that you're even running reshade, it doesn't interface with the game in a way that the anticheat or the pure client checks can possible check.
what is happened to this site? Look at that banner🤢
