As I've grown up, the only thing I really like about the Decendants movies is the songs. The acting at times can be....questionable but they're still fun to watch
Heartwarming comfort they did their best with the budget they had
The biggest thing I hated was how overt the lip sync was in all the songs. It was too jarring.

It's such a shame about the drama that went down between Decedents and Ever After High. Because ultimately the death of Ever After High isn't due to Descendants, it's the marketing crew of Descendants, who did everything in their shady power to push Ever After off to the side. :/ They could have shared the attention, but no, Disney corp had to be petty.

That makes 0 sense. Ever after high is nickelodeon and descendants is disney. Mattel didn't even make descendants dolls, if that's what you're talking about. It was thought that Mattel lost the disney license because of the poor quality of the princess dolls and because descendants coming up would be a conflict of interest with eah. Basically, what I'm saying is that it is impossible for the marketing crew for descendants to push ever after high to the side, since hasbro made descendants dolls and Mattel made eah

It's not, it's actually because the quality of the dolls dropped.
My favorite low-key thing about _Queen Of Mean_ (aside from literally _everything_ about it) is actually that she changes her hair subtly to look a bit more like Mal's, showing that she's doing all of this because she's jealous of her, and rather than trying to be the exact opposite of this person she hates, she's trying to embody her in a desperate attempt to get people to finally like her, which is all she really wants.

Audrey (the one from the last song) is basically what Apple White could have turned into if she (Apple) was an actual mean girl. Both girls had their future pretty much figured out, but when the one that was supposed to be the villain of their story decided to pursue what they really wanted, they put at risk their future. With Apple, she needed Raven to be evil so she could have her happily ever after, something that was put at risk when the latter decided to change her fate. With Audrey, she was perfectly happy with the future that awaited her until Mal (who was the daughter of her mother's villain) appeared and took that future from her. However, Audrey, unlike Apple (who is unknowingly selfish but still good-hearted and kind), used to be spoiled and bratty and, together with the pressure placed on her, decided to become the villain in order to take what she believed was hers.

Generally, Disney Descendants 2 have the best songs. It deserves a Grammy.

The books goes into more detail about the darker aspects but yeah it’s fucked😭the food on the isle is literally the leftover and remains from the kingdoms. They basically are punishing them w absolutely inhumane levels of poverty lmao. And the thing is when you leave kids to be w horrible ppl and never give them the chance to be raised by…normal ppl. That’s also just a one way track to abuse lmao. Part of me wishes someone else made the movies so we could have a darker story. Bc a lot of the actually horrible things the kids faced and why they’re so scared of their parents in the first movie is never even mentioned in the movies

@@kayleekirkpatrick9193 yep i rlly wish they had atleast implied what the kids were going through bc that would have made things more impactful bc looking back at the films we are never truly given enough info on WHY the kids are still so afraid of their parents and not doing what they want even when said parents literally have no access to them. We truly don’t see enough of the parents or the core 4’s lives before they left the isle. They also just rlly made Carlos less intelligent in the films when HE was the one who broke a whole through the barrier and him being a literal genius was a big part of his character in the books. He and Jay sorta just have the same personality in the movies (w Jay just being more of a flirt tbh).

Descendants is a bit frustrating for me, who is obsessed with logic and the canon of Disney movies, because they never explain how the villains who died are alive on the Isle of the Lost, or why Uma’s color is teal when Ursula’s colors were all purples, but there are a lot of Disney villains with purple color schemes
Well I can explain the first one. In the books, the villains that died were brought back to life by King Beast, solely to be placed on the island. It’s super disgusting honestly. Imagine being brought back from death just to be imprisoned.

Fun fact: Kenny Ortega specifically choreographed Chillin Like a Villain as a tribute to Michael Jackson. Or at least thats how I've heard the dance moves be explained.
Also, seeing Cameron Boyce as Carlos still to this day breaks my heart. Knowing that Descendants 3 was his last appearance before passing away makes me appreciate it that much more in a way.

The line "You need to not be yourself" from Evie is really the whole conflict point of D2. This song really highlights how hard it is to conform Ben to the "Villain lifestyle" for mere survival, and how that was exactly what he expected Mal to do in Auradon.

I’m always taken aback when I see people I watch acknowledge Descendants cause it was literally my entire personality for years. I genuinely had an unhealthy obsession with it. I found old texts with a friend where she was like “can we please talk about something other than Descendants?” And I said No. I also still have 6 cardboard cutouts of the characters in my room. Over 30 books 70+ dolls multiple posters and insane amount of random collectibles including backpacks notebooks perfumes cups shirts board games dvds cds pens jewelry wigs bedsheets and pillows I’d buy costumes and clothing of it even though they didn’t have my size. amongst other random things….. I have other interests now. :)

You’re like the best reactor to Queen of Mean for me because I watched a bunch of reactions from vocal coaches and no one mentioned anything about her singing through a key change. That part of the song is really cool to me.
Added context:
The first song you listened to (What's My Name) is the villain song of that movie so of course it needs to slap and be among the best of the Descendants series.
The second song (Rotten To The Core) sets up the four main characters we follow in the movie series, introducing them to us and giving us small bits of their personalities at this point through their actions and lyrics (such as how Jay is a bit of a kleptomaniac, Mal is a bit of an artist as we see her painting graffiti, Evie is self centered shown by her walking on the table without caring for those using it, etc). It also does let the audience know that even though they're kids of big villains in the Disney universe, they haven't had the chance to do really bad things beyond basic teenage hooliganism due to their situation and also gives us an inkling that though they believe they're bad and that they have the potential to be, they aren't quite at that point of no return and thus have potential for being good.
The third song (Chilling Like a Villain) goes with Andrew's context, but they aren't married, just in a relationship that put her in the spotlight. Mal believed she had to be perfect which clashed with who she is as she's not a stereotypical princess, and due to the stress of this she ran away back to the island (it's easy to get in but harder to get out due to the veil). Her friends and her boyfriend followed to try to convince her to come back and the song is pretty much them trying to teach the king how to blend in so they don't get caught (they haven't been too popular there since leaving) and so they also don't get killed. As for the tech, I think it's implied that their technology is run mainly on magic, so while the mainland advanced, the villain island (which has no magic) stayed as it was. A real-world comparison could be a country that's in self-isolation only depending on itself and not having contact with the rest of the world, whereas other countries share info, tech, and goods thus pushing development and progress. The king also gave them back their own phones, showing that he is learning as he was able to steal from them without them noticing.
The final song (Queen of Mean) is pretty much what Apple White from EH could've become if she had really been a mean girl. Basically a "typical high school bully/mean girl that has potential to be good falls to become a villain" song and definitely my favorite song of the third movie.
I definitely recommend watching the movies. They give so much context to the songs and the songs sometimes take on new meaning with that added story. Plus a lot of the weird moments oddly make sense. The series can be cringy at times, but it's kind of part of its charm in a way. Some of the people who worked on the High School Musical series worked on these and you can kinda see it in the song sequences as they're shot and choreographed as if they were music videos at times.
While on the topic of Descendants, I just want to say Rest in Peace to Cameron Boyce (AKA Carlos/The guy in red black and white 11:20 ). He sadly passed away in 2019 and I'm not sure too many people know about it. He was a great guy.

Chillin' Like A Villain is where they are trying to teach a Ben how to fit in on the Isle so nobody recognizes him, also that wasn't his phone, it was Carlos'. Ben pickpocketed it to show he was learning.
I really enjoyed the Descendants, I wish they did more with it. Also, the Descendants are the children of the previous generation of princes and princesses. For Example, Uma (the pirate with blue, braided hair) is the daughter of Ursula.

The new project follows the story of Red, the Daughter of Queen of Hearts, and a few other newly introduced characters. China McClain is also resuming her role as Uma

As someone who has watched and enjoyed all 3 Descendants movies in my childhood, this video ultimately brought me back to road of nostalgia. I'm glad to hear (mostly) positive comments from your reaction Matthew, and it would be nice to see you react to more songs from this movie. A couple of suggestions I would like to request:

Yes! I'm so surprised you haven"t heard these songs before! There are so many more you need to listen to. One of my favorites is called "My Once Upon a Time". Though i would suggest finding the extended version. The movie version is okay, but you get more with the extended

Descendants has a similar comcept to EAH but thir both really different and both good honestly theres always been a fight wether which was the better concept due to i think EAH being cancelled for more descendants movies (?) But i think both are great in their own way, personally im more into descendants rather than EAH but i still watch both and their great :)
Yeah, the descendants series dropped when it was the end of EAH, but it's not actually that that made them stop doing the EAH. It's because EAH was created to sell dolls, and the dolls weren't selling anymore, they were just creating it and losing money on it, so they decided to stop. I think that Descendants kinda played a part in the series stopping, but mostly it was for the dolls!
I've always loved their songs. Next time i recommend "Night Falls", "Do what you gotta do", and "It's Goin' Down". There similar to what's my name, and great bangers 😊
The thing about Uma, she's more of a side character than the main characters but more of a main character than the side characters

I wasn’t interested in the first movie when my younger sister watched it but after seeing China in Black Lightning it was strange seeing her in the second one but her voice is incredible and probably the reason I like the second and third movies more than the original

Now whenever I watch anything from these movies, I always find myself just watching Carlos (white haired guy). Cameron Boyce was just such an amazing performer and dancer, it’s crazy that it’ll be 5 years he’s been gone next year. I truly hope he’s resting in peace
