- Using fabric as a background is a great idea. There are endless options of color and material and it can be a great choice for the budget-conscious photographer. But making a fabric background that actually looks good is a little more tricky.
In this video, photographer Gavin Hoey shares his experience in making a crease-free fabric background that’s perfect for temporary studios. He then goes on to show two more ways to create different backgrounds using the same length of fabric.

Gavin - great tutorial for self-portrait, work-related still images. In setting my spare room studio, the backdrop is really time consuming yet has such value when 100%...(water spray and 1and 2" clamps for 14'L x 9'H, 18% gray). This is for full-length portrait. Could you now shoot the same type of tutorial, but all the technique and gear set-up based on full-length (4-5 inches in front of shoes/ 3-4 inches head room under frame). Processing this tutorial shows how your full-length process must be even more challenging. Thx.

I use fabric backdrops when I shoot adoptable animals at the shelter. I can throw the backdrop in the wash when I'm done. I've used the A clamps and bed sheet straps but I finally decided to buy a set of the background clips for backgrounds/backdrops. A set of those aren't expensive. Thanks for another great video!!!

I do that too! I’m also a pet photographer. Since not a lot of fabric is needed, I can buy really cute prints at the fabric store for variety.

Thanks for the video. Do you have to iron your fabrics a lot before using them as backgrounds? And do you have to have the iron on quite a low setting? I have been experimenting with different fabrics vs paper backgrounds to see which is best. Sometimes fabrics are a chore to iron, especially if they're about 8 ft x 8 ft. I can never get the creases out completely. I tried a fabric brick wall but I can still see the creases which doesn't look right at all as who has ever seen creases on a wall? What's the best type of material that has the least creases and how do you store these afterwards? Do you roll them up or fold them away? Thanks.

2. How width x length is your fabric?

Question for you Gavin: There are different types of fabrics. Some are quite thin and translucent while some are very opaque. Some absorb light and others are reflective. Some have texture while others don't. It makes me wonder if there is a general all-purpose fabric to look for or do we need to plan the shoot with the fabric-type in mind?
fabulous i need to explore a bit more fabric side not just my popup backgrounds and paper rolls ! Ive got some fabrics I just need to get them out! By the way regards the reflector for clam shell did you try those eyelighter curved things? I wondered about those instead of my usual go to reflectors and card options they just seem a bit large for my small space!
Hi John. I've seen them, tried them at trade shows (back when we could do that) but don't own one.
Awesome. Would you ever backlight the fabric so it appeared glowing from behind?
Good question Jason. Backlighting a lightweight fabric like this is a great idea but don't overdo it as it's easy to "burn" the colour out when the flash is pointing straight at the camera 📸

It's a Lenovo Windows 10 laptop with a detachable keyboard. It's been my go to tethering laptop for the past 12 months or so but has been super handy recently when showing the model the camera LCD isn't possible.
I use an old 12volt tv with a hdmi in connection to show pics and control my cam....

Hi Robbie. It's a Lenovo MIIX 520 tablet PC. Thanks to Covid I can't safely show the models the back of the camera images, so this is for their benefit as well as mine 😉

As someone who sews, my guess is a synthetic knit, like polyester or acrylic. A cotton knit would stretch out and not bounce back.

Hi Lisa. Not really although the more thin and floaty the fabric the more light will pass through. That can be an issue and a blessing depending on the look you want 😉

Hi Peter. My studio is roughly 4x7 meters but that includes the space for my office.
So, if there are folds in the background fabric, use them to the best advantage. Gotcha!

Great Video, thanks Gavin & team. Gavin I am wondering why you shot wide open ( f1.4) forcing you to shoot at 1/2000 and HSS in the middle series of photographs. Would the shallow depth of field at 1.4 have changed the character of the images rather than your ‘normal’ f8?
Hi Paul, good question. Yes f/8 would have made a difference but perhaps not as much as I would like (small studio limitations) due to the 25mm lens. But every bit counts and I did get some much needed separation.

Good question. That's my Lenovo Miix 520 tablet PC. Basically a less powerful, less pricey, less new Microsoft Surface.

That's my Lenovo tablet PC. It's not the fastest but all it has to do is tether 👍
Hello Gavin. I have a question for you. It would be great if you could answer it. I tried to connect my Olympus EM10 Mark3 to my laptop. Although I tried with Olympus capture ı couldn't succeed. So do you know any other way to connect my Olympus to my computer and use it via Lightroom or other software similar to lightroom or Olympus capture... Many thanks...
Sadly the Olympus E-M10 range doesn't tether. The only other option I can think of is to use HDMI into a monitor if it has an HDMI out.
