  • A car totally blocks the storm, the wind and snow - now just stay warm.
Without going to a lot of trouble, get cozy and sleep 3 or 4 hours in a blizzard, wait out the storm, be safe. One of our blankets is a perfect preparedness item - Osni Top Quilt or Personal Survival Blanket - both are excellent for this purpose.
Our blankets are not quilted so they can have maximum loft to give you the most warmth.

Sometimes people question whether it's best to stay in a vehicle or to leave it and set up outside somewhere. In reality most of the time it is best to stay inside. It is unlikely that any shelter you set up will block the storm as well as a car. A car also has carpeting, headliner and foam seats, all of which have insulating value. If you are stranded your car will be easier for rescuers to find than some shelter. If you have the means and can do it without getting colder a snow cave could be constructed nearby and if done properly could get you close to 30 F degree temps. You have to evaluate your situation to determine what is best. Often utilizing a vehicle is most effective.

Wait for the snow to build up and your car would be a snow cave.
The thing with a car is to go out periods dically and shovel out the grill, the exhaust, the rear lights and that area between the hood and windshield. The grill and exhaust are ventilation for your engine if you want to run the engine for heat. The base of the front windshield and the tail lights are ventilation for the passenger cabin.

I've been in my SUV Durango and this is third vehicle in a series up here in Northwest States of Oregon and Washington State. Sleeping in cars or SUVs with them turned on for warmth in twenty degree and subzero weather ....snow and rain and survived quite well and very warm and dry. No carbon monoxide sickness or deaths so far ..
Vehicles do fine and are fairly self contained and well sheltered from weather.
Better than out doors in that weather. Spent several winters this way ...

I recommend a nice hoodie and layer up in shirts instead or in addition to a blanket which mostly I find unnecessary to even use my blanket.
Mostly I get too hot in here and sweat ...not freezing cold at all...SUV
heater works great. I've fallen asleep multiple times and wake up drenched in sweat from the heat in here mostly ...
      Yah ...
      I recommend this
Hwy 5 in NW STATES has plenty of places with public toilets and places to pull into and rest for 8 hours or so and so to try this for starters. Hwy 101 does not have as many rest areas as hwy 5 Calif and Oregon and Washington State to Canada

What’s best is turn around or turn off interstate to state highway and nearest motel. Only if motel is booked stay in vehicle at parking lot. Remember to have about $300 in twenties for lodging and meals since power may be out, meaning no credit. I’ve been in 5 white out blizzards in Kentucky, North Carolina, Wyoming, Michigan, and Indiana to fully understand this is the only route to assure you don’t die, period.

Great. Here in Canada i've remind many to keep blankets and or sleeping bags inside , not just for this reason but sometimes heaters dont work or take long to warm up even. Spare body type of warmers can help, Keeping that exhaust pipe clear of snow in important too

Good advice, Perry. I hope not to need it. The last time at risk was was winter storm conditions from Memphis to Philly at Thanksgiving several years ago. The Interstates were littered all the way with vehicles spun out, wrecked and some overturned. Probably a lot of Yankee drivers who make fun of Southerners who presumably are the only folks who can't drive in ice and snow. Speed aces skill every time, doesn't it? I reckon the first best advice is to stay with the vehicle and avoid CO poisoning. Maybe a CO monitor in the vehicle could add some safe luxury. I am reminded to keep my WI blanket in the car. Good to have for comfort and warmth in any situation.

The CO monitor is a good one. You just never know if you may have a small leak that maybe you wouldn’t ever notice. Until having to run for warmth an sitting enclosed. Than you may not notice it either in the sleep. By than it would be to late

Maybe this should be labeled a public service video. Unless someone lives an arid climate, being stranded in a cold storm could happen to anyone. Tonight we in New England are relatively free of snow. The Carolina's are in for a big winter storm. The basic supplies to survive along with basic knowledge will save your life and the lives of your loved ones. Neither takes much space.Thank you Perry.

A lot of people don't know how northern Arizona in the winter can be a very dangerous place. 20 years ago two girls were stranded for 10 days in the snow southeast of Showlow. Despite being stuck close to a stand of trees they chose to stay in the car instead of getting to the trees and building a fire. One girl had both legs amputated below her knees from frostbite. In 2011 another girl spent 10 days in her car stranded in the snow south of Winslow.

You should always have a small co2 detector in your vehicle in the winter months. I would place the detector as high as possible in the back of the car and crack the front windows a tiny bit.

@@anthonynelson9136 Must been long time ago most snowstorms up north don't last more than a few days here now. I have been snowboarding up north every winter for the past 20 years. Never seen a storm last more than 2 days. I was just up in Springervill visiting a friend. We get lot more heat related deaths people breakdown in their cars with a few bottles of water on some dirt road google told them to drive on and end up being found dead after a week when a rancher drives down that road. Last one I remember was out in Florance some elderly people took a car down dirt road got stuck in the mud after a thunderstorm. Heat was over 110 next few days husband went walking found him dead. Wife stayed at the car she was found barely alive she made it. Then we have the hikers who die on city park trails in the summer right in the city. I always carry 5 gallons of water per person when on a trip.

I would put on a hat rather that sleeping with a blanket over my head. Your breath has a lot of moisture and you will end up with a damp blanket or sleeping bag and it will lose its ability to keep you warm.

Sometimes might get a few feet overnight, or might not snow much but the wind might kick up huge drifts. Being able to use a vehicle for shelter is good. I am surprised that you didn’t use an osni cloak. That would have added extra insulation to your back and the hood would have reduced heat loss through your head as well. Adding an extra blanket over the top would have reduced the need to even run the engine.

Wilderness Innovation I would agree with sleeping in a seat. The back would have been hard floor so you would have needed some additional cushioning underneath and insulation, using up a blanket unless you had a beast mattress as well. Overall I do see any number of these items being almost essential winter items for drivers in emergencies.
