Momo Á i know this is a late commend but my first mantis i ever had lived longer than a year. When he was a adult he lived for another 6 months so its bullshit that they live for 7 months max
I'm so thankful for your videos! I've recently started looking into the mantis hobby, and your aesthetics's pleasing jars make me want to get into it even more. This information is so helpful! I've recently gotten into exotic pets, I've had an iguana for nearly a year now. But I love these creatures because they're like little fairies
There are some species that live longer than a year. My giant asian mantis lived for 1.5 (female) and some other species such as the giant african stick mantis live for 1.5-2 years. Though that short livespan is also a pro for some people. A lot can change in 2 years.
4:49 I think this is what my daughter just found in her backpack, when she was rock climbing. I got her a closure and decorated it and put a couple of crickets. Great video 💙🐝💙
I just recently found a Chinese mantis outside and brought her into the house. She just laid her ootheca last night!! They are such neat bugs, and this is my first time having one indoors. I can just sit and watch her move and eat! It's very fascinating! Thanks for the burlap tip with the mason jar, I was read to remove the ootheca from her environment in 3-5 days, so I will make a new one for the babies in a mason jar! :)
I’ve bred Idolomantis a few times. They are impressive but they don’t give birth. They lay eggs, in big lumps covered in a foam to protect them called an Ootheca. Egg case.
Neat, I caught one when my daughter was little and took it to her preschool for show and tell. It’s surprising how many people weren’t aware that we even had Mantids living near us. I let it go in our back yard and we were rewarded in the spring one day with tons of tiny, tiny babies crawling around! At first, laying on our bellies on a small trampoline, we thought they were mosquitoes or ants. When I was able to get one on my finger however, it stood up on the tip in its prayer position just like its momma🥰🥰🥰!
I have a Ghost mantis, an Orchid, a Carolina, Chinese, Giant Asian, African and an African Flower. They are all so cool and different, they are so fun to feed and even their habitats are awesome from a decorative point of view and I have them in my living room. Love em!
I kept Mantises as a kid. I used to catch them at my school, put them in Bottles and feed them roaches, Until they grew up and then I release them. They were lots of fun to have in the summer.
Illegal to bring in to Hawaii ... BUT we have at least 6 species here Tenodera sinensis, T angustipennis ,T. Australis, Hierodula patelifera and at least 2 smaller types which I need to identify. I've been keeping them since 1972 field caught in CT, FL and TX. They develop RELATIONSHIPS (!) with their keepers and I can't think of any other arthropod which does. In Hawaii we have also cool Cane spiders, a flying stick insect and a scorpion which I also keep.
I love praying mantis. I live in AZ as a teenager I would catch adult mantis and keep them in small terrariums feed them houseflies or whatever insects I'd find. Recently I find some nymphs a few days ago one green and the other one is white not an albino as far as I can tell the eyes aren't pink/red waiting for it to get bigger and see if it's an albino or not. But hope they survive and watch them grow to adult size. I would def love having the Orchid or diabolica mantis.
As I kid I took care of 3 mantises(?). I used to go outside with a butterfly net to catch flies. I was lucky to find two females because then I had many babies! I think they were Giant Asian Mantis.
I had a Dead Leaf at one point, got her when she was a hatchling. She survived two molts before dying and I'm not sure what the cause was but it was very sad. She got sick and starting vomiting brown onto my hand when I'd handle her. One day I just found her dead at the bottom of her enclosure. It could have been a molt gone wrong and the brown vomit was due to over feeding, but I kept her enclosure warm and humid and devoted a lot of time to her. She seemed to be thriving until the circumstances suddenly changed. My point is that these things happen; she was a relatively difficult species to keep and even in the best environment she didn't make it. Be wary before spending up to $30 on a mantis; they're definitely worth it if they survive and you might find yourself forming a strong bond with them, but the reality is that it can definitely be a gamble sometimes. Often it's worth it to spend the extra money and get more than one, especially if you're just starting out
After watching this, I went outside to play with the mantis that was on my screen door. It was so cute, it did a trust fall into my hand and crawled around cleaning its claws. Then it flew on my face. xD Then my bro spooked it and it flew away.
Tanya Waters Although they're not always in stock, if you go to the website bugsincyberspace.com your can buy many different types of praying mantids including the orchid mantis and even other insects/arachnids. But again, since the orchid mantis is such a treasure, it's not always going to be in stock. But also be sure to be familiar with taking car of mantids because the orchid mantis is not a good beginners species. But ya, good luck on getting one 😊
Tanya Waters I was going to say the same thing, get familiar with care of an "easier" or beginners species before committing to an Orchid, do some research, there are some REALLY beautiful beginner species, and besides being a girl that even owns any mantid at all is cool as hell in and of itself... Wait to see the reactions ppl give you even when you whip out a "common looking" green or brown lil badass... S'awesome.... Good luck.
I found a green praying mantis outside in the rain with a arm missing and I’ve been hand feeding it for the past week it’s kinda hard but I think I have a handle on it
About their not being able to hurt you, well, they can't hurt you very much. But, I was playing with a wild mantis I had caught and it managed to break the skin on my finger. It was like being stabbed with a needle. Just a little drop of blood, but I sure left her alone after that. ^.^;
Akshay Ravi Kumar I would make different costumes or suits of armour for them, so they would be invincible in fights, I was thinking find a dead one and drop it in melted plastic, let it cool then wamo, cut the suit accordingly
The legal status really differentiates between the counties. I’m German. Here the only native mantis is endangered so it’s forbidden to it even if it’s captive bred. But all the other commonly kept species are allowed.
I just caught a big one that's been hanging out on my porch at night.I am going to get a tank and stuff tomorrow. Very excited. She is about 6 inches long and has big wings. Chinese I guess.
I have a (roughly) 3 inch female Chinese Mantis, I'm getting her a new tank because she is getting bigger still, she is really beautiful, she eats crickets, and right now is In a 15x5x5 plastic Tupperware container
I love my violin mantis and it is really tolerable of the conditions in my room and i mist her cage once per day. Also one missing leg isn't a big deal because i got her with one leg gone and she does fine.
I used to raise them as pets for years when i was a kid. Now that i don't have much time i just look for mantis nests and put them in my garden so i don't have to use chemicals to keep harmfull insects away. The mantis is a farmer's best friend.

"tiny badass cat" is a description about a mantis that I've never heard before xD
The only downside to them is their lifespan
Killersnake 898 yea but a year is pretty good for an insect

Are all mantises safe to pick up and touch?
As long as you know it's a mantis, yes, they're harmless.
What else could it be? Are there harmful look-a-likes?
No. You're safe.
the only thing that is harmful is when humans try to kill these beautiful creatures.
There is once that is venomous; the Hooded Mantis. those live in Brazil, if I remember correctly
