There are some species that live longer than a year. My giant asian mantis lived for 1.5 (female) and some other species such as the giant african stick mantis live for 1.5-2 years.
Though that short livespan is also a pro for some people. A lot can change in 2 years.

I can just sit and watch her move and eat! It's very fascinating! Thanks for the burlap tip with the mason jar, I was read to remove the ootheca from her environment in 3-5 days, so I will make a new one for the babies in a mason jar! :)

Neat, I caught one when my daughter was little and took it to her preschool for show and tell. It’s surprising how many people weren’t aware that we even had Mantids living near us.
I let it go in our back yard and we were rewarded in the spring one day with tons of tiny, tiny babies crawling around! At first, laying on our bellies on a small trampoline, we thought they were mosquitoes or ants.
When I was able to get one on my finger however, it stood up on the tip in its prayer position just like its momma🥰🥰🥰!

Illegal to bring in to Hawaii ... BUT we have at least 6 species here Tenodera sinensis, T angustipennis ,T. Australis, Hierodula patelifera and at least 2 smaller types which I need to identify. I've been keeping them since 1972 field caught in CT, FL and TX. They develop RELATIONSHIPS (!) with their keepers and I can't think of any other arthropod which does. In Hawaii we have also cool Cane spiders, a flying stick insect and a scorpion which I also keep.

I love praying mantis. I live in AZ as a teenager I would catch adult mantis and keep them in small terrariums feed them houseflies or whatever insects I'd find. Recently I find some nymphs a few days ago one green and the other one is white not an albino as far as I can tell the eyes aren't pink/red waiting for it to get bigger and see if it's an albino or not. But hope they survive and watch them grow to adult size. I would def love having the Orchid or diabolica mantis.

I had a Dead Leaf at one point, got her when she was a hatchling. She survived two molts before dying and I'm not sure what the cause was but it was very sad. She got sick and starting vomiting brown onto my hand when I'd handle her. One day I just found her dead at the bottom of her enclosure. It could have been a molt gone wrong and the brown vomit was due to over feeding, but I kept her enclosure warm and humid and devoted a lot of time to her. She seemed to be thriving until the circumstances suddenly changed. My point is that these things happen; she was a relatively difficult species to keep and even in the best environment she didn't make it. Be wary before spending up to $30 on a mantis; they're definitely worth it if they survive and you might find yourself forming a strong bond with them, but the reality is that it can definitely be a gamble sometimes. Often it's worth it to spend the extra money and get more than one, especially if you're just starting out

I love my violin mantis and it is really tolerable of the conditions in my room and i mist her cage once per day. Also one missing leg isn't a big deal because i got her with one leg gone and she does fine.

I used to raise them as pets for years when i was a kid. Now that i don't have much time i just look for mantis nests and put them in my garden so i don't have to use chemicals to keep harmfull insects away. The mantis is a farmer's best friend.

Which of these are less likely or don't fly? I have PTSD and having something jump or fly at my face would freak me the fuck out

I have several mantids, one of the species I have is the Egyptian Pygmy Mantis, or the Miomantis Sp. I have raised loads, and they pretty much never fly, but they can breed asexually. I'm watching one of mine molt whilst I'm typing this, and it is really exciting. They only get to about an inch and a bit (both males and females). They don't live that long, but I love them. They're very easy. I would recommend them. (:
