      Have you been happy with that purchase? I've been going back and forth of the 20 watt vs 100 watt, was worried that the smaller head one gives up a "crunch" channel...but this video is killer content and perfect tones

    Notes about the 'One Song' series:
    The idea for the 'One Song' series came about when I was trying to come up with a cool idea for my next EPIC/MEGA amp comparison with around 30 amps. So I came up with the idea of writing a song in multiple styles that would do a good job of 'testing' the versatility of an amp. It would start clean and end with metal. And I thought it could be interesting to use multiple guitars, so one for each section. Then I realised that it would be cool to release each amp's video individually first and when I'm all done I'll upload a compilation that would essentially be similar to all my other mega comparisons, including all the timecodes etc. This will be called: 'One Song, 30 Amps!'.
    So that's the plan basically! However, I'm also planning on running the song through some modeling platforms to also demo those and see how well they can work with all the material in the song.
    I've chosen to NOT use the same IRs for each segment this time because I want to use cab tones that the amps are 'comfortable' with. So don't view this as a direct comparison of the amps per say, but view it as an amp showcase that also allows you to hear how the amps function inside the song or inside the music, of course in comparison to one another in that sense! This will showcase the uniqueness of the amps more, which is more fun imho, and it also allows me to be a little bit more creative when reamping each amp. Plus: some of you guys will say 'they all sound the same' anyway and the different cab sounds will make the amps sound more interesting and unique!
    For the metal segment I'll very likely use a boost pedal for most of the amps, just so you metalheads or djentheads can hear how a downtuned baritone with a boost sounds with the amp.
    Anyway, I hope you guys will enjoy this series and I hope I made the song interesting enough to listen to it a couple times (because I don't expect anyone to watch all 30 or more amp videos lol).
    -Jon

      Hi! As always, a cool video!Which of the amplifiers is best suited for home use ? EL34 in dsl20 give more low end than el84 in 6505mh? I choose the first tube amplifier, but in my country there is no place to listen and play them, so I rely on RUclips. Or maybe forget about these two and save up for prs mt15 ? Thank you in advance)

    • @SonicDriveStudio
      @SonicDriveStudio  4 года назад +1

      @@ВадимДавликанов all of the amps and tube types you mentioned have plenty of low-end. It's a matter of headroom. So the small amps with the EL84s will sag and compress more when you turn them up.

    • @ВадимДавликанов
      @ВадимДавликанов 4 года назад

      @@SonicDriveStudio It turns out that the 6505mh has a more compressed sound, in contrast to the dsl20 and PRS mt15 ? I'm very interested in what kind of amplifier would you recommend for home metal ? Is prs mt15 so good or does it make no sense to overpay ?

    • @blakebruner6173
      @blakebruner6173 2 года назад

      I'm afraid the Sound Termites have in their burrowing, eaten away your ability to hear the frequency variations that the presence knob accoutrement controls.
      In other words, loud music has harmed your hearing to the extent you can't hear any difference when you engage presence.
      Or, ya, it could be broke.

    I'm going to be one more person to say: I'm very satisfied with my DSL 20 (I own a CR model and I've swapped the stock Senvety 80 speaker for a Vintage 30 16 ohms) and I think that those who say "It's a Marshall, but not the real thing" are nothing but a bunch of elitists who have not considered that maybe, just maybe, this is a Marshall which has it's own voice. I strongly recommend this amp and say, for those who are not really satisfied, to only consider trying other speakers such as a Vintage 30, a G12h or a Creamback.

    • @nomadronin7361
      @nomadronin7361 4 года назад +2

      It's definitely a Marshall, it has it's own voice, but that voice is definitely in the Marshall tone range. I love mine as well. The only, and I mean ONLY complaint I have about it is I wish it were a little bit smaller but, then again, the head (HR model, which is what I have) was never marketed as a mini head. Mine reminds me of an EVH 5150 EL34 if they had made a 20 watt version of it.

      I changed out my 2 seventy 80’s for a pair of 8ohm Creambacks and man...... I also use a victory kraken pre-amp pedal and run that with the 4 cable method so it gives me a 4 channel all tube amp as the kraken has tubes in it. @@matthewlewis281 I have the DSL20HR and don't like it at all. I think my problem is the Seventy-80's in the MX212 cab I got with it. Great for searing treble tone, like Slayer.... But I'm having a really hard time deciding on which speakers to swap to. V30 seems to be everyone's choice, but there's Greenbacks, Creambacks etc... I'm more of a metal lead tone kinda person. But having that same cab and replacing those same speakers, and i jam everything from Breaking Ben to Kiss to Metallica etc..... those speakers made that amp come alive. And I agree with your take on the 70/80’s although I personally didn’t hate them as much as other people. But I wanted to upgrade so I did. Also the V30 and Greenbacks are also kick ass choices and I was gonna lean that way but the creambacks had something about them in the sound clips I checked out. So I don’t regret my choice

Most channels that have reviewed this are either more classic or 80s rock and the other channels that did a metal review just scoop the shite out of the mids which sounds horrible. @@SonicDriveStudio That's the thing about those. I've seen good and bad reviews. Wondering if some are good and some just have QC issues. You would think by now they would have ironed out the problems if there were any. Who knows. Great video! Which do you prefer, the Marshall DSL20HR or the Friedman JJ Jr? Do you think the EL34s in this amp add something that the EL84s in the JJ Jr doesn't? Just curious as the Friedman is suppose to be based of a modded Marshall, they're both 20w, but have different tubes and are vastly different in price. If you had to choose 1 amp to keep between the Marshall and the Friedman, which one would it be? Would love to see you do a comparison between these two if you ever get the time and desire to do so.

      In the same predicament. Did you get one?

    • @mountainpeakcloud8442
      @mountainpeakcloud8442 Год назад

      @@ScootHen69 Full disclosure, I got the JJ Jr before I posted this question, and had it since early 2020, so the context of my question was more to put my mind at ease that I got the right amp for me. It's easy to have a piece of gear that you love and still compare it to everything in a similar category, with the grass is greener mindset... After considering all this, I still felt the JJ Jr. was the better choice for me.
      From my "research", here are some things to consider. Low wattage Friedman amps sound great at low volume, because there's a heavy reliance on preamp gain, where as Marshalls tend to have more reliance on power amp gain (in general), so you need to have to power tube in a Marshall cooking before you get "THAT" tone. The Friedman tends to be a little darker and voiced more modern (like a modded Marshall), where as the Marshall with obviously have that more classic Marshall sound, but will also have more of that high midrange by comparison. The JJ Jr has a 2 gain "channels" and a clean channel, the Marshall has 2 gain channels, not clean channel (though I'm guessing you could make the "classic gain" channel your "clean". The Marshall has built in reverb, the JJ Jr. doesn't. The Friedman is made in the US is good quality materials and components, and Dave stands by his products, so if something goes wrong, you'll be taken care of. The DSL is not made in England and not to the same quality as the Friedman. The Friedman is twice the price of the Marshall.
      I haven't heard the Marshall in person, only in videos, so I can only comment on it from that perspective, but from what I've heard, it's gain tends to be more open and slightly more "wild"or "untamed", with more higher end. If I was more into classic metal and thrash, (classic Metallica, Megadeath, Anthrax etc.) I'd probably go for the Marshall. The Friedman's gain feels more "refined" and focused, less piercing, but still aggressive in it's own way, and it's great for obviously AIC, but also still that's more mid range focused. Since I play "grunge", stoner rock, doom etc. It works well for me, and you can push the high frequencies will the presence, but the Marshall has this extra percentage of highs that Friedman doesn't, so how important that is to you and what you play, only you can decide.
      As far as the tubes go, I think the Marshall may sound slightly "bigger" cause of the EL34s, but the JJ Jr. does not sound like a small amp cause of the EL84s, cause it also has to do with the size of the transformers, and speaker cab. I saw one video comparing the 2 amps where the guy much preferred the Marshall, cause it could do more aggressive metal tones and had more top and low end, but tbh I don't think he really eq'd the JJ that well, and he's a metal guy and has a certain bias towards amps that can do that metal tone. I've also heard people that prefer the JJ for it's specific mid focused modern voicing. Some people found the DSL20s gain to be generic sounding, where as the JJ has more "character" (pretty subjective imo). To me, if you don't care about build quality and price, and want a more "metal" amp, I don't think you can go wrong with the Marshall, but the Friedman can do "metal" too, however it has a specific voicing that's more mid range focused. They are different enough to have both imo, but I will say that I never plan to get rid of my JJ Jr. it's that good, some may feel differently.

      There is a point where it doesn't get louder, just different sounding

      @scmtbnomad 4 года назад +1

      I run it trough a 4x12 in a hardcore/punk band with a really loud drummer and bass player + 2nd guitarist.
      In the 20 Watt Setting at 1o‘clock and slightly boosted with an boss eq it is very very loud - but: after 2 o‘clock it doesn’t get any
      Louder. In fact: a distortion pedal (infuse Friedmann be-od) through the classic gain channel is much much louder, as this channel not that compressed. However it is not really drive-pedal friendly as it is just too bright.
      The 20 Watt Ultra gain: For a rehearsel room: No problem. For a miced stage: no problem. A larger venue with large stage - I don’t know 🤷‍♂️ unfortunately 😂

      the 20watt is to ñoud for room levels, u can consider the dsl1 wich is a 1watt version, but really, its better if u go for and amp head that u like and use and atenuator so u can crank the amp volume alk the way up so it distors and saturates well the valves and use the atenuator as a master volume

    Must have been something wrong with mine. The gain channel got real fizzy, real quick and it lacked balls. Did not have enough volume to cope with my band (had to have it almost cranked). Hearing this demo, I think there must have been something wrong with it. Maybe something with the power tubes.

    What would be the point of getting this head? 20 watts is not loud enough to play with a drummer in a real band. Don't you need at least 40 watts of tube power? Have you played this head over a loud drummer?

    • @theceoofgibson2563
      @theceoofgibson2563 3 года назад

      20 solid state watts would be a joke in a real band, but 20 watts of an all tube amplifier such as the DSL should hold up. A 40 watt amp will actually only really be 3 Db louder, the appeal is mostly an increase in clean headroom.

  • @RobertMurphy-wm3ge
    @RobertMurphy-wm3ge 3 года назад

    Don't impulse response units give false sense of the amp itself? You can tune an IR to do whatever you want. That's their entire reason for existing. I could be wrong.. fantastic playing though.

    • @theceoofgibson2563
      @theceoofgibson2563 3 года назад

      No impulse responses are more for emulating a specific speaker, in a specific cab, miked up with a specific mic, in a specific room. Once the IR is actually captured you can't really change it or tune it to your liking.
