Amazing! The visual and sound quality and camera work - they're all remarkably good, considering this is c 1931. Walter liked to keep things moving but also to add sweetness to quieter, melodic sections. - John Austin, Australia
the setting resembles the old Philharmonie in Berlin, but it is rather a replica built in a studio, as Mengelberg´s recording with the Concertgebouworkest from cca the same time, in a scene looking like the Concertgebouw - a studio construction nevertheless. Anyway, great work from all involved in making this excellent recording, the orchestra and conductor Bruno Walter in first place.
At the time of his death, Walter contemplated recording an LP of Weber Overtures in LA with his Columbia Symphony pickup ensemble. I'm sure the record would have consisted of the three "usual suspects" - Der Freischutz, Euryanthe and Oberon. In addition to the fact that all of these overtures exist in live performances, Walter made two 78rpm syudio versions of Der Freischutz (1924 & 1938).
Did anyone else notice a violinist (I think) who is almost a dead ringer for one of Walter's most famous rivals? Took me aback when I first saw him. Hint: even less hair than Walter.
My thought. We know it isn't him, but if you were watching this on television or in a theater and couldn't replay, it would be a little startling. I don't even know what Papa's instrument was.

Interesting to compare with Mahler's other protege, Willem Mengelberg. And after the War, Otto Klemperer. It seems Walter had the least good of the orchestras.
Astonishing. You can hear the orchestra on fire in the tutti and such sensitive ensemble playing.

Even with the loud bits distorted, I can tell this is a 1st rate performance

It's always fascinating to see old concert halls like this, the old Philharmonie, that were either destroyed in/before WWII or were demolished

6:21 and couple of others. I thought I saw a famous conductor who was the father of I daresay, an even more famous conductor. Middle of screen.
looks like E.Kleiber, but of course it can not be him, at the time he was already an established director.

Whoever directed this film was as determined to show the instruments in close up solo passages as he was to exclude the player's faces. Shame.
