OH MAN! Tons of logistical issues with this one, but I think we should finally be good! The 4k quality is still pending, I just wanted to get the video out there. :) It turns out there was an issue with the video compression file I originally used. Thank you everyone for your patience and tolerating the multiple notifications of a new video. lol
Without a doubt, you are the best deck builder I've seen in youtube. Your rational for card choices has really made me think more about my approach, and I often see your work as a challenge for me to improve. Just like you have been inspired, you have now inspired me. Thanks for the great work! 😊
I seriously appreciate that comment. It is harder than it seems on the surface to make these videos happen. Comments like this make it worth all the struggle. Cheers to you!
I think the issue arises that I don’t think Joey playtests these decks after building them unless I’m wrong he just changes the deck and doesn’t playtest them like you have.
I am pretty sure that he goldfishes his decks, which can be helpful, but you miss out on that IRL experience. I will admit that some decks I don't get the chance to play before making, but I tend to only pick decks/commanders that are similar to something I have already played so I have a base to work off of.
@@Tempest-Official yeah I’m super pro goldfishing but the issue is when people goldfish too much instead of playing games because they might take removal pieces out because they might not think it’s as useful as it is
Umbris has been my favorite commander in edh and I had this horror tribal deck that always seemed fun to me but never seemed to work that well. One card I have added to my list that I have been loving to have is Haunt of the Dead marshes from the Lord of the rings set.
Apprechate the advise, I'm proxying an umbris deck but as a cthulhu deck (umbris just reskined to cthulhu the great dreamer) and making the nessersary reskins to keep the deck on theme, really like this advise but might add some more ram like a crypt ghast or ways to double black mana, just so I can eventualy build upto casting ulamoog who'd be reskinned to being azathoth the daemon saulton. anyway thank you for the vid Appreachate it.
I hope you get more subs and keep doing this - you have one of the most thoughtful approaches to deck building I've seen on RUclips. You seem to base your thoughts on actual experience playing the decks instead of "this card is cool!". Keep up the great work!
Well made video. Your talking points and presentation are clean concise and on point. I would like to offer some criticism, I hope it doesn't come off as rude or agressive. While I generally agree with a lot of the reasoning and arguments you gave early in the video about the weaknesses in Joey's build, context is important if you are looking at things critcally. The Upping the Average decks are all built with the average deck list from EDHREC as the base and adjustments are only made which will maintain the price or lower it. This is a slight deck building limitation which I am not sure you adhered to or not, and probably should have been brought up.. Additionally this Upping the Average video was posted in February 2022 cards like Not Dead After All and Breach the Multiverse did not exist and, arguably, more importantly Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate didn't exist, which brought in a ton of new horrors which improved the tribe substantially. All in all I wouldn't consider the Upping the Average lists to be finished decks.. they are more similar to a first draft of a deck, just after your first round of cuts where you have the deck down to 100 cards and you have a rough idea of how you want the deck to perform but you are also sitting with 15-20 cards you're considering in you're maybe board. They are a starting point for tuning a deck.
Definitely thinking Changeling Outcast is a free auto include. {B} for an unblockable body that triggers Umbris and can carry equipments or chip for damage is always good.
Umbris is the first deck I have ever made on my own! I made it almost two weeks ago. I’m glad yours and my creature and artifact selection are almost identical! I ultimately made some weird decisions but it was to keep the theme of a HP Lovecraft deck. So I sacrificed some synergy for fun flavor. I can’t wait to actually get to play it once it’s completely assembled! My next deck I want to try is Animar Soul of the Elements (sorry if the name is wrong). That commander looks like a lot of fun and can go toe-to-toe with hardcore Dino decks. I’m thinking it to be my Mech-Godzilla to my friend’s Godzilla deck. Haha
@@Tempest-OfficialI'm currently trying Nicol Bolas the Ravenger. I thought he was cool because it flips to a decent walker. I also like Nicol bolas Drago god, but unsure if it's a reliable enough win-condition.
@@MrSirSquirtle Ya... The ravager really is your best choice in the Grixis colors. If you wanted to branch out, you could go witch-maw with OG Atraxa. Or just send it with 5 color. If you want to stick to Grixis, make sure you have those good blink synergies. Deep glow skate is your friend. Displacer kitten can do some wacky stuff, especially if you downtick your walkers often. Those are just my surface level thoughts. I would love to do live streams for moments like these, then I can talk it out with someone!
Again an amazing video! Keep up the good work! Would love to hear your take on The Twelfth Doctor with Vislor Turlough as Companion. Giving multiple people Vislor with Twelfth Ability sounds fun
I bought the budget version of Joey's deck shortly after the initial video dropped. I've only played it a few times but didn't enjoy it for exactly the reasons you mentioned. Despite having so many protection tools for Umbris, it never lived long enough to do its thing. I like the changes you've made and the reasonings for them, but the upgrades are a bit out of my price range. Any chances we could see a budget version of this?
Im really looking forward to building this deck for halloween im trying to get it perfect or as perfect as i can get it thank you for all your hard work here
Could you help me understand why you didn't include any counterspells? I'm new to magic and I'm not really sure when not to add them, in my mind they make sense in every deck. Btw you made me fall in love with Umbris, your decks are awesome!
Mostly it's just personal choice. Counterspells tend to be great in most decks that can afford the includes. I don't have them in every deck just because my playgroup doesn't use many so I go for a more consistent/lethal deck strategy with redundant lines for winning. That's the short of it. :) I'm super glad my decks have been helpful!!
Hello, first of all I would like to tell you how much I like your content. I'm relatively new to MTG and I'm learning a lot thanks to your videos. I like Umbris a lot and The Scorpion God a little less. A friend I play with has The First Sliver and it is practically impossible to do anything with my Pantlaza deck and my wife's Hakbal deck, due to the cascade (i like to call the automatic win) and various abilities of their creatures, for example regenerate or deathtouch. Which of the two decks do you think would work better against his? Oh! Also has a deck of scarecrows with Reaper King who doesn’t let you play if he doesn’t want to.
I forgot to add that my wife really liked the Eriette deck and it will probably be her second deck. Again, thank you for all the work you put into your videos and for sharing your entire experience in such detail.
I'm kinda new to magic, so I'm curious, is the reason you don't run panharmonicon or roaming throne in this because it focuses too much on just the commander text, and doesn't synergize well enough with the other inclusions?
I think roaming throne is a noteworthy inclusion. When I made the list, Lost Caverns wasn't really on my radar. But Panharmonicon is a card that I have been cutting left and right. It really is a "win-more" card. I try to not include these when I can. I think people assume it is so generically good it must be included, but if you can't build a functional deck in the first place, there is no business including it. I would challenge yourself to find an alternative synergy piece for each specific deck instead of the widely assumed "generally good, auto includes."
@@Tempest-Official yeah for sure, panharmonicon is sitting comfortably in my Elesh Norn flicker deck but just there for now, you're right it doesn't really have a place here, not nearly as much as roaming throne. Cheers for taking the time to respond and give me some advice, much appreciated.
