In his roles Dave rides all the latest adventure bikes but insists on manufacturers providing them for a number of weeks and where possible takes them on a lengthy adventure covering thousands of kilometres.
This review looks at the Ducati Desert X through the lens of Dave's experience as a dirt oriented adventure rider who has ridden extensively in Australia and internationally.
There's no reciting specifications or drawing up charts or riding the bike around the local area. For Dave, nothing replaces long miles in the saddle over wide ranging terrain to get the most detailed appreciation of the capability to take on a tough dirt adventure on the Ducati Desert X.

You always set the standard for these in depth reviews. You covered everything! We all thank you for your continued amazing work to bring us these reviews.
so true thanks Dave and BigRock
Thanks Big Rock. Between the two us, riders should walk away with a pretty good understanding of the bikes we test. That said, I must confess I would prefer to film long form motorcycle adventure movies but world events have turned that upside down. All going to plan I would have ridden from Sydney to Mount Everest and this year would have spent some serious time in the States with Harold and friends from Giant Loop, in the north west.
Thanks mate.
I really enjoy your longer reviews you guys. Keep on keeping on. It's fun to learn about different bikes and what opinions experienced riders have of them from top to bottom. Great work!
Thanks. Frankly, I prefer to be filming long documentary type adventures but I do enjoy doing the reviews and tests. It's crazy in recent years I've ridden so many good bikes reasonably long distances in the dirt I find their strengths and weaknesses very quickly.
Guys, this has to be one of the very best bike reviews ever put online. It's a cracker and prospective owners will now really know what's what with the bike. Well done and keep them coming.
Thank you
The editing, the review, the story telling is amazing. What a pro! Cheers mate.
Thank you. I'm glad you appreciate the effort in this one.
Great songs Dave, along with just the best videos. Nothing even close...
Thank you :)
Glad you appreciate them.
Honest & great, real review mate. Thanks a lot💥👌😎
All the best from Serbia🤟
Much appreciated!
'Your being able to identify the "Achilles heel" by comparison is really the crux of why we rely on you and others just like you Dave. When I bought my 690 it would never have happened without your input. The dealer would not let me test ride it because the software (what they told me) would not be unlocked without a proper sale of the bike. And what an awesome bike thank-you very much. Now I did buy the 901 before you had put out a review, but there was plenty of 890 info. In regard to rider aids. It is amazing how many people turn up their noses on this subject. Quick shift and rally mode on the 901 with the ability to adjust on the fly makes my 901 the greatest bike I've ever owned. 105 hp! Freakin awesome!!!
Thank you for your kind words. We do try.
Dave never been a ducati fan but after your review I think I need to take a long hard look at myself, the way you explain stuff just perfect mate
Great bike with a couple of niggling things that can be sorted out.
Great review Dave captures all the essence of the bike in all situations and terrain environments 👏🏼👍
Glad you enjoyed it.
That's what I was trying to do. I kept away from spec sheets.
Love what you do here Dave, the wisdom is priceless
Thank you.
Awesome video. I am 50 years old. Being rinding since I was 16 on road bikes. I have few Ducati’s amongst other bikes. I just bought the Desert x and I am looking forward to start my off road adventure. Keep up the great work,
It's a great bike.
Absolutely love these reviews Dave 👌
Thank you
Great episode Dave. A nice deep dive into the Desert X. Excellent video production as well and nice addition in using that Lav mic. Your game keeps Brapping!
Glad you enjoyed it
Always good to listen to your reviews..
Thanks.
As a DX owner myself I totally laughed at the ridiculous lean on sidestand. As one of the first DX’s in the Benelux I had one off of the first batches produced and I chopped off a nice bit. Now with my lowering kit a new and more leaning sidestand is mounted. I loved your long review and I realise even more I’m totally in the wrong country for getting the most out of this bike, but I love everything on this bike, it’s my travel companion and I have lots of adventures planned. One day I hope to make it to Australia! Thanks for making this extended vid!
Now that was a very thorough review of the off road capabilities of the Desert X. Thanks for answering my question about the seat comfort.
Thanks Michael a very good question.
Dave, this what you do best, the riding review and questions. This was really good. More of this and less of the talk shows.
Mate these take 3 or more weeks to shoot and produce. If I placed content every three weeks I'd go under on youtube.
As a new adventure bike owner (T7) I am always looking forward to your reviews Dave. Excellent work Cheers
The T7 is a lovely bike. I own one. Although it is a fair way from standard when it comes to suspension.
@Motorcycle Adventure Dirtbike TV Thanks Dave. I have watched all your Tenere 700 clips multiple time over and still enjoy them. 😉
Enjoyed the efforts Dave. A really good Vid.
Thanks 👍 A lot of effort.
Magnificent review !
Glad you liked it!
Wow, what skills you got.. Awesome! thanks for this!
Thank you! Cheers!
thanks Dave, it was a really good review
Thank you
Great honest user experience info Dave, thanks for this. So many bikes sporting those lack lustre STR’s off the floor. Don’t know anyone impressed with them off the tar.
Whilst my go to tyre is the Rally Scorpion MST Race, particularly for the front, I don't mind the STRs in most stuff, but slippery clay they had nothing.
Totally agree on the side stand length issue. It is to long and the bike falls to the right with a minimal bump. Loading it up in the rear will just make it easier to tip. Awesome test. Thanks mate.
Thank you Michael
Excellent review and agree wholeheartedly with your explanation and assessment of the traction control and quality componentry. The only time I can tell it is doing its job is when you see the yellow indicators lighting up on the dash.
Unfortunately, air filter access with all V twins KTM's included do not lend themselves to an engineering solution that makes it easy to access. I don't get hung up on doing filters too frequently and even doing them every 5000km or so wouldn't cause myself as much concern as it might to others. Some of us enjoy working on the bike and checking it over.
I chose the Desert X over the Norden due to suspension, price and quality of components like the Brembos, & over the 890R due to longer distance road manners & price. Like most bike owners there are always extras that are needed that the factories don't give that we wish for and the crash bars & Foam filters certainly fall into this category. I personally think the 890R is probably still king in pure dirt riding, but the Desert X probably has it every where else and the Norden unfortunately has missed the mark with the suspension. It never seems to get mentioned how we are the only place in the world that the Ducati is cheaper in comparison to how significantly cheaper the Austrian bikes are elsewhere that being the case the Desert X is an absolute bargain here.
Excellent contribution. Thank you.
"Desert X is an absolute bargain here", well at least Aprilia is saying the DX is only 10% better than the Touareg given both RRP! Waiting on your feedback Dave. Awesome production and content btw 👍
Great review. You've made really want to get one. Seems very similar spec wise to my old KTM950, a bike I wish I still owned.
I owned a 990. Much, much better.
Spot on...having lost 20 lbs due to cancer ..I am not that comfortable offroading my 2nd GSA....I know never to buy a new model on it's the first year...but your review is much appreciated.
Thank you
Nice Job I just bought the x and loving it!. Cant wait to get it to Turkey Bay here in the USA. crash bars installed! lol
Get those crash bars on it!
Thank you for another great review. Just watched this for the second time and enjoyed it as much as the first time. Maybe it’s because I think I have it narrowed down to this and the African Twin (base model). On paper the two are almost identical but will have to ride each before I decide.
Awesome, thank you!
Hello Dave, great review as usual! Most buffeting comes from the vacuum behind the screen. I fixed it on my touring bike by raising the screen to create a large gap below, like an air scoop. I couldn't ride it over 80km/hr with ear plugs and visor closed before, but now I can keep my visor open and ride without earplugs at over 150km/hr. I couldn't believe it. So the Ducati solution might be two cheap brackets on either side of the screen. Or possibly some tank deflectors which seem to help on bikes where air rushes up behind the screen
Great points. Triumph are masters at the winglets that deflect air.
Excellent video
Thank you very much!
You did a great report thanks watching from Canada. I think I am still going to get the 890 R KTM 2022 still some left at dealers here in Canada.
23 model is just around the corner.
Thankyou for taking the time to make this extensive review. I can’t afford this bike Unfortunately.
Oh well. If its any consolation my best adventure ride was on a Bajaj 220.
Thanks for the review Dave. You cost me a lot of money....but I'm loving the DX after 15 months of ownership. A quick question re your tank bag - is that the Fandango or the Diablo? Cheers. Dave
Enjoyed it...!
Good
turn up the volume this song Rocks old man
Hi from France. Thanks for detailed review. I short tested the Desert X and found that incredibly good handling and ergos, favorably surprised with low rev torque. Now, I found the price was not justified when looking at the KTM 890 ADV R. And I would love to hear from you about this comparison 890 R vs Desert X.
The 2023 KTM Adventure R arrives in Australia in March 2023. They've addressed the all important 'trail feel' and softened the look and a number of other things. The suspension on the R is better, but there is more to a bike than suspension when its close. Too close to call. But look forward to riding the new KTM.
Your detailed explanation along with video as its happening is why your reviews are always a cut above the rest. Deal killers for me on this bike would be the air filter access and weight but still looks like a fun bike. I still think T7 with RR suspension and a few accessories is the best of both worlds. And still cheaper than the Ducati.
I still love my T700. I tell you another thing the T7 centre of gravity is way way higher.
Almost half way through and It is crazy to hear you talk about the suspension. My Multi Enduro Pro was really great on roads like you are riding. Maybe it was just the weight of me and the bike. She was a heavy girl for sure. Well you are adjusting it now, lets see how it goes.
Thanks for sharing!
I’m a Kato guy but that was an amazing review Dave! Well done and thank you..
Glad you enjoyed it. Really looking forward to kicking my leg over the KTM890 Adventure R when it hits Australia in March.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV Yep the new 890 looks the goods Dave. Unfortunately due to my height it’s the 1290 for me.. first world problem though! Lol..
@@nikkato7096 the 1290 is a wonderful bike. I love how they've lowered the seat height.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV lol.. I run the higher Rally seat which is perfect for me.. agree it’s made it more accessible for shorter riders..
A great review of the Desert X the air filter is an issue Ducati will have address crash bars are an absolute must have. You spoke about cost of the bike and potential buyers of an Adventure bike in the mid weight class and pointed out that people need to make up there own mind and do there homework with the calculator and test riding the bikes there considering. The Ducati Desert X is an awesome first mid weight adventure bike but the competition in the mid weight class is fierce.
Spot on Michael
I despise my Ktm 1290 sar surgery, to get at the air filter. Not to mention, the messy oil changes with Ktm.
I am considering a different ride, after my wife bought an 890 Adventure. That's an awesome bike.
I am steering at the 890 sar. Filter location is amazing. It does very well, off road. The low center of gravity, is a huge plus.
I was really looking at, the Desert X though.
I'll still take a look, at Ducati.
Great review Dave. Thanks. You don't happen to have a gpx file from the 3 day ride?
We never give them out. But we do provide hints and bread crumbs during the video to some of the tracks.
Do you recomend red seat?
Thanks for another great review... You're amazing as always.
Compared to the norden , which one is easier to handle off-road?!?
Both excellent off road. But as reported the rear shock needed to be improved for my style of riding.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV thanks
I meant easy as weight distribution... Top heavy and so.
Much appreciated, great overview as usual
Nord901 or DX. Rode both, love both. Please decide for me, im driving myself crazy with the decision. Might as well flip a coin or let the dog choose at this point.
the coin flipper should be the quality of local dealer support.
Allo Dave, great vid mate an thankx as always.
Ok, I was moochin around yt, an foun a vid by a Italian company, called WRS moto special parts, for a larger screen.
Ave a look, cause this buffering at least in Europe is a big thing especially during the winter 🥶.
All the best an thankx again mate.

I will check it out
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV ok I’ve found two more.
Camel adv an ride must adv build prt 1. Second one shows taking off tank an air filter replacement. No mean feat mate.
In Romania the dealer told me we will get new side stands from the manufacturer at no extra cost. But not as short as the one for the lowering kit.
Ah that's good to know. They are listening.
First Thumb Up👍, then rushing to local Woolies to grab my favorite red rock deli chips for this masterpiece 😋 For the same V-Twin engine layout, is there any major difference between this one and V-Strom 1050
No idea.
Nicely done, especially your comments about Adventurer riders expecting to do basic maintenance. Ducati totally missed the mark on DIY serviceability. Ducati, are you listening?
Glad it was helpful! It was a brilliant first attempt by Ducati...but ....dirt riding has different demands.
Bloody great review 👍. That intro song is awesome, who is the artist?

What song is at the begging of the video?
Awesome review and I'm really keen to hear your views on the 2023 890 Adv R when it arrives - one thing, what's the track playing at the start of the video?

Great vid, what crash bars and bash plate was fitted on the desert X you showed from another clip of a desert x ?? Cheers

What an amazing review! Next level! Sounds like they did a great job! Tuareg 660? Does it have an edge on it?
Review on the Tuareg out soon
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV Awesome! Really looking forward to that one!!
I think that engine came out in 2013 as the 821. I have a 2013 821, and love that thing.
I'll take your word on that, but the engine is great for adventure.
Great Review Dave! I have a the new KLR650 and have been considering an Aprilia or the Ducati as an upgrade. Reason for the upgrade is the different riding modes, refinement in ride and cruise control. Wondering if you and Clubby have been thinking of a mid size comparison of these 3 bikes anytime soon? Or how you might personally rank them?
No, but we've tested the three of them and the results are pretty obvious.
Always enjoy your reviews Gentleman! Absolutely fantastic!
Now, from all around point of view (KTM 890 Adventure R, The new Norden 901 Expedition or the Ducati Desert X) - which one would be your pick if you had spare 28k to 30k Australian dollars?
Thank you!
Too close to call for a range of different reasons.
Thanks
Thanks Mervyn, greatly appreciated. Thanks for recognising the effort put into this review.
That is a lot of bull-dust on the belts at 45. I would be running a tape around the seam of both belt covers before hitting the dirt except over any obvious air cooling gap if they exist. Bit of a worry that, it could shorten the belt life and tensioner bearing life considerably. Re air filter, surely there is a way to install a remote snorkel for the pre-filters? 45 minutes is a joke for a filter swap.
Good points James.
No issues with those belts, the bearings are sealed, just like your chain and wheel bearing, they can take a lot of dirt without issues. Years ago I lost a belt cover on a Ducati Monster, I thought it was cool and I never replaced it, the bike lived outdoor - no issues until I sold it 6 years later. Also, the belts are very easy to replace
@@sspirito3130 The tensioner bearings may be sealed but the belts will definitely wear out faster than normal and so will the alloy drive pulleys. Just something to watch out for. I have been running Ducatis since 1993.
The belt housing has a filtered vent for cooling(?). - wouldn't seal it. Looks like this machine has an easy access cover for cleaning - but can't quite tell.
I see you like the Ducati a lot, and before I saw you liked the Norden a lot too. They seem direct competitors. The Norden is cheaper though. How do they compare in handling and comfort you think? And which one do you like more?
Extremely close. Too close to call for me.
Bought a desert X and have done 15k kms on it. I am a big guy and I want to do some hardcore off-roading now. Do you think swapping the stock suspension with tractive or Ohlins or the desert x rally kyb one is necessary? Which one would you recommend? Also, should I be looking at another adv as a second bike - 890r or Tuareg? I own a katana and Royal Enfield and a desert X. Looking to explore what I might have missed in the bike world ☺️. Is there a significantly more awesome bike I can buy? Was thinking about a multi rs or a m1000xr for speed thrills but not sure. Thanks!
I don't know the answer. I don't know what I'd do.
Yeah Dave, I'm thinking about all the gyrations and modification you had to do to get the T7 where this bike is straight out of the box, and I'm thinking that this is a better bet?
Look most riders don't ride that hard. That said I could see and feel the T7s potential. Combined with John from Rally Raid's drive to get the suspension right it turned out well. That fork performance didn't just happen we dyno'd and did three rebuilds and I still have another set of internals in my garage! If I wasn't in the industry and didn't have access to people like John who love to collaborate I would have gone somewhere else. I ride at a certain speed. It keeps me safe. If I ride slower, or faster, I crash. Unfortunately my happy speed is a lot faster than an average adventure rider and frequently involves getting air.
Dave, Thankyou! Than you! Thankyou! Would this be an upgrade to my KTM 1090 Adv R? I would have to pay 4-6 k US more after selling my KTM. The Desert X is only 10-15 pound's lighter. 46mm front forks vs KTM 48. But my KTM has no Cruise control which I really would like or need. Oh and I hate taking off the tank to get to the air filter on the 1090 and the one big negative to the desert X is you have to do the same thing.. ughhh. And one more question, is the tank metal? If so I hope there will be an aftermarket one coming. That would shave off at least 15 pounds.
I love the 1090
YOU SAID YOU AND NUGGET ARE NOT AN ITEM!! AND SAID NO!!! I THINK YOU JUST BROKE POOR OLD NUGGETS HEART! LOL,LOL, FROM UK

Hi Dave
What do you prefer to ride? T7 or Desert X?
Thanks
Completely different machines with a different heart and sole. My favourite at the Husky 701.
ggreat video👍
I hope I covered the dirt aspects of the bike well.
This bike looks great. I want one.
I wish i had money. lol
Good bike.
Just a few things.
You didn’t mention if it have heated gribs, heated seat, cruise control, can you get a center stand ?
I was focussed on the dirt stuff. You'll find that information on other reviews where they drive it around the tar for five minutes. It comes with a heated grips switch. not sure about the other options.
You are right. Focus on dirt stuff.
👍
I agree 100% Dave about the air filter access, that blows me away that Ducati have overlooked such a crucial component of an adventure bike.
Let's be honest it's an incredible debut to the market but obviously many improvements need to be done to bring it closer to the top adventure steeds currently on the market. If only manufacturers added more equipment as standard.
Agree Scott.
Great video... You mentioned the seat being height adjustable.... Is that a thing?
Yes. Quite easy.
From the reviews I’ve watched the seat is not adjustable. Instead there is an option to purchase a high or low seat variation. The low seat is only 10mm difference to the standard seat. The combination of the low seat and lowered suspension pack reduces the seat height to 845mm.
@@jameshind6644 No. I'll have to check up on that. I recall the Ducati rep fiddling with seat height on my bike.
Don't let the look fool you, that's the 990 successor!!! KTM's management should be proud of their motorcycles for midgets, especially in the context where the average height of the population is seriously increasing. Congratulations Ducati!!!👏👏👏
A lovely bike to ride.

Nice Dave yes very nice that Ducati
I liked Dave when you said about the 701 LB
I hope we still buy the LR versions.
Apparently if the fuel tanks were over filled the charcoal filter blocks up and no fuel gets to the engine ( a uro 5 bill shit )
Take it easy safe travels Dave Cheers
Thank you.
That's a good looking Honda at 33min 57 seconds!
I've asked it before.. Could you buy three of those for the price of the Ducati?
Not that one! We seriously blew the budget. You're looking at $17,500 AU there! Look forward to our final discussion on that build.
…and vs the Aprilia Tuareg? Any insight please. Seems the Tuareg is not covered much in depth by my most of you youtube superstars. Thanks in advance.
Mate, you didn't wait till the end of the video. I can't blame you on that. We ride the Aprili Tuareg thousands of kms in a week and a bit.
Hi Dave , what was the Giant loop dry bag on the 3000km trip. Also how did the red rooster go travelling in the group. No fuel anxiety for Clubby, suppose the low cc matched the range of the larger tanks of the bigger bikes. On estetics the desert X looks great. Great pics. Cheers.
Tillamook Dry bag, the little one. The CRF review including footage from this ride is out soon, just waiting on new tyres.

You'd do OK.
So Dave, you didn't mention the air filter, is it good for Aussie dust ? 🤣😁😜
You get a Unifilter. I wouldn't ride it ut back with a paper airfilter.
Good review, would you take an africa twin sports over the ducati? Considering service costs and longevity...
Not sure. I like riding the AT but it is getting a little dated.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV thanks, I enquired about the desmo service and it was allot of $$. I think long term it may cost too much to maintain compared to the honda
@@johnpej122 Ask your Honda dealer how much for a proper service for an Africa Twin that includes valves check...probably about the same as a Desmo service

@@johnpej122 Valves every 18,000 - 20,000 miles - how many do you ride every year? The rest is wet sump and some bolts.
Odd how different people pick out different aspects. You say reasonable seat height. It's the same as all of the 34" and none of them are reasonable because they are too tall for someone of average height. Tourag is 33.8 so a tiny bit lower. And the heat aspect, other reviewers didn't notice any heat from the engine. Desert seems great though, going to have to sit on one soon.
You keep saying it has Brembo brakes, the T7 also has Brembo brakes.
I can't imagine someone trashing this bike in gnarly off-road with the weight it was and the price tag.
I can. Lots of people will.
I’d give Ducati at least another year or two to sort out all the minor issues with the desert X. My father always tells me to buy last year models of any machine and, conversely, never to buy first year models. Manufacturers constantly improve reliability and build quality, the motorcycle goes through drivetrain and chassis tweaks, certain options become standard equipment. Let others do the beta-testing.
Words of wisdom there.
Would you get a Tuareg 660 or this? 🤔
Both good bikes.
KTM 890 for Hipsters. Great riding areas.

Tubeless, not Tubeliss ... Nuetech Tubeliss is the hard enduro setup with the high pressure tyre liner
Tubeless.

Desmo heads and timing belts?

@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV BAHAHAHA. I was saying how it can be a solid adventure bike when it uses desmodromic heads and a timing belt?
How would you compare this to a Tenere 700 World Raid?
Mate that's an essay.

45 + minutes is a deal breaker for an air filter change
accessing air filter is a deal breaker, WTF ducati was thinking...
I have a 2013 Multistrada, currently running sport bike tires but I've had TKC80s on it. Ducati's troublesome maintenance (filters and valves), high part costs and sparse dealers make Ducati a no go for serious dirt work. I'll stick to my trusty old WR250R with screen, large tank and comfort seat for adventure duty.
OK. The little 250 is a great bike.
Serously 45 minutes to change an air filter? You need to remove the gas tank to do it?
Yes,
45 minutes to change the air filter? Not very adventurous this bike!
But they did get many other things right.
I don't get you Aussies. How dare you make honest, unabridged and thoughtful adventure bike review.
Bike companies invite Americans to a bike review, but along with the bike comes a script that must be memorized and regurgitated to the masses. For the reviewer, the allure of fancy hotels and free meals and goodie bags is enough to buy
their allegiance to a company and not to truth. Good on you for breaking the mold. Great review.
I appreciate your comments. There is way, way too much of that going on and the title their videos, "Honest review!" FFS. But what annoys me more are motorcycle reviewers that ride the bike around their local area for 20 kilometres and then 'knowingly' talk about it, citing the spec sheet! We aim to ride the test bikes at least 1000 kilometres.
