Almost 9 months with my Norden 901 Expedition .. 19.000 Km on her (16k in three months and them a broken clavicle). I am way happy with my decision to buy the Expedition, more joy and trips to come!
Absolutely the funniest reviewer there is. I laugh every time… then you add the fact he rides like a beast and really knows his stuff… bro great review.
The placement of the air filter on the Ducati is why I didn’t buy it. You have to take off the fairing, tank and all kinda **** to get to it. The owners manual says to take it to a dealer to service the air filter! I love my Norden. I’m glad I made the right choice.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Give this comment a thumbs up if you want Smokey to do a video on how to adjust your suspension. Time we all learned! And who could make it more fun than Smokey? ☺
As a T700 owner, I was looking for more power. I bought a DDX but wasn't in love with it. Too much wind buffering, rear cylinder was so hot under my legs, so I did it and got the Norden Expedition. Absolutely love this bike. It's a animal! Engine is very aggressive down low which makes wheelies so easy, but it's the suspension that I love the most. It soaks up bumps so easy. ❤
I've already chosen, picked up my star white silk DesertX in May. Already have over 1600 miles on it. Was delivered with 1 mile. Put the Termignoni race exhaust (cat delete, -9 lbs) with EVO tune (around 120 hp). The db killer installs/removes fine, drops db to around 105. Love the 110db braps and pop without the db killer though. 😊 The stock exhaust sounds like a spastic vacuum. Put 9 turns of pre-load into the rear suspension before my first ride. This reduced squat to around 1.0" when I sit on the bike. I weight 230 lbs. My Desert is 217 kg (478 lbs, on a certified scale) when filled to the brim with fuel. I removed the rear foot pegs and support frames to reduce weight, but added that weight loss back on with the Ducati heavy duty skid plate install (was $450 at my local Ducati dealer, in stock). It connects to the trellis frame, not the engine.
Are you crazy?? lol Definitely play with the suspension clickers!! The ability to dial it in per conditions is a game changer for me, even on my lil Husky 401 Svartpilen. You might not notice on more powerful bike but with 45 hp, making the suspension stiffer will make it quicker, as when soft, it uses some power to squat the bike. Stiffer suspension will direct more power forward... Love both these bikes!!
There is a 12v under the Ducati's seat. As for the height, the Norden's footpegs are in you way when you put your feet on the ground (at least it was an issue for me). Went with the Ducati because it feels better quality and the retro looks.
Gas tank opening is on the right cause when you fuel and the bike is on the side stand, the bike tilts to the left. Allows for a bit more fuel to be added.
Norden Expedition is just such a great deal considering what you get out of the box. I guess the regular 901 sales are going to take a dive this year. And I would not be surprised if KTMs 890 and 890r alto took a hit because of this Husky.
Great deal until the cams melt. And they will. Or you get stranded by the under oiled clutch because you rode up a hill. Who knew adventure motorcycles didn't go up hills?
Both gorgeous bikes, but the price of the Desert X is definitively a deal breaker.... I’d go for the Norden! Great video, as usual 👍 Thank you, Smokey 😀

I just went bike shopping at a small local dealership. Overheard an internal conversation between the owner and sales person regarding my choice of bike (an Africa twin). They were agreeing the reliability is un matched among the newer models, commenting they see KTM, Ducati and Aprilia in the shop for stupid premature problems both electrical and mechanical. I had considered the norden 901 but decided not to test ride after research enlightened to the fact KTM shares interest in the company. A bike MUST be reliable above all as you are exposed to the elements. Looking forward to many trouble free miles on a time tested platform, thanks Honda and Suzuki for producing reliable and well performing bikes, I'll continue supporting the brands that don't turn their backs on the consumer.
this is where everybody comes out to tell you how much better their bike is cause they can't afford these two (like ALL of the T7 owners) - the best bike is always the one you own ! In reality all bikes are awesome and different - I own a desert x and a KTM, but my favorite to ride is my monkey (125ccs)

Good vids - no boring bits! I tend to set the suspension when I first get the bike (sag first, then a bit of damping if needed), then leave it alone. KTM/Husky give some starting points, which helps.

Great work Smokey - I don’t know how many times you changed your shirt but the Segal moves, cappuccino machine and the ass saving width of the Norden gets my vote 😊 love your work
Loved this video. Hilarious and informative. Def got yourself a other sub ❤🙏🏻😊. I was in our local Husqvarna dealership today, who is also our local Ducati dealership and definitely noticed the difference in seat width and the corresponding reach to the ground. I’m 182cm and was on the balls of my feet on the Norden with both feet down. Closer to flat footed on the Ducati (not quite but close). The Norden Expedition is a little dearer than the Ducati here in NZ but given the upgraded WP suspension, pannier bags and bash plate, it’s good value for money. I’m a Ducatista so I’m torn but def will be buying one of them in the NY!
i prefer the look of the Ducati, but the airfilter change seems like such a pain in the ass it kills it as a practical bike especially for people that actuall want to go offroad, i with the norden didnt have the huge head light and had two like the ducati, but cant have everything
I really want a 901 Exspedition but in the UK there all sold out untill next year 😪 also the dealer network is pants nearest desler to me is over 2hrs away and according to KTM whichbis 20 minutes away there not aloud to touch the Husky (same fekin engine and sister company ) its making it very difficult for me to purchase 1.
Desert X - stupid place for the air filter. Picture it. You’re on a long trip, and you’ve been through the desert, etc., then you spend and hour and a half to get to the filter. On the KTM/Husqvarna or T7 it takes less then 5 minutes to get to it.
this is the biggest reason to not get a ducti they really fucked up on this, i guess thats what happens when a brand that until now made exclusively road bikes
Given how relatively hard the seat is, I don’t think the Desert X was ever meant to be used on a long trip. If I was going through anywhere where the ease of replacing a air filter is a concern, both of these bikes wouldn’t be high on my list due to reliability concerns.
For a freeway commuter queen should I just get the regular 901, add the heated bits and taller screen and call it a day, or still opt for the taller expedition?
Looking at Ducati's website is says that Desert X weights 202kg. If we assume that's the dry weight without any fluids and we add 15,75kg of fuel it is approx. 217,75kg. Then add coolant fluid, engine, transmission and break oils and I think you are more closer to 228kg then 238,1kg. So I think they are more or less the same when it comes to the weight. Am I wrong?
I'd love either of these bikes but would always have reliability anxiety. I just prefer placing my trust in Japanese reliability. My heart says European but my common sense says Japanese.Sad, but true.
In Akras defense, they are forced ti rivvet or weld those in by the EU, but yeah, they do push shit out hella fast not neraly as optimised as they could be, atleast for the non premium bikes.
@@LifeofSmokey Yeah, sometimes I wish we lived in murica where anything is possible, so many great bikes discontinued here because its to expensive for manufacturers to convert them to Euro5
@@iNFiN3 yep indeed! I watched a clip yesterday about The Netherlands they are investing 28 Billion Euro on green regulations for the next couple of years. It will lower emissions as much as China produces in 3 days 😂. They say it will drop temperature with 0,00036 degrees I kid you not. 28 Billion euro on tax money for 0,00036 degrees and China will make it all worthless in 3 days 😂🙈
I'd really appreciate it if I can get a reply, because I really want this bike. I'm 5'2/157.5cm with a 70-71 cm in seam. I have only started learning to ride last year (never learned manual and didn't know how to use a clutch), but I started with a Chunky Himalayan with pannier boxes to learn to adventure ride with. My partner taught me to ride, and I can now ride his KTM390 adventure on all the terrains I ride on with the Himalayan (peagravel, dirt, stoney bits, corrugated roads, etc). He is training me to ride it at the lowest seat height of the Expedition - 875cm on his 390. Granted, there's still lots to learn on a tall bike, like trying to get on it in the first place, and getting off of it safely constantly (simulating traffic) or emergency braking. My question is, when you're off the bike, is it difficult/too heavy when stopped and having the bike lean on your hip/inner thigh/leg? Because that's the only way I can keep it up while I'm stopped. 😂 Thankfully, the KTM is lighter than the Himalayan (especially with the darn boxes), but I understand that the Expedition is much heavier. I thought, if I can handle the Himalayan + pannier boxes + a 30kg suitcase on the back, I should be able to ride the Expedition... I think. So, I have to know! I'd really appreciate your feedback/advice!! Thank you! Context: I live remote near the Outback, so I can't just go to the nearest store to try and sit on it. 😂 The closest city is 10 hours from where I live, which also gives me lots of practise for dirt/trail riding. I have never wanted a bike this much, and I know a girl can only dream for now, but I'd really like to work on being able to ride this bike one day when I get my big bike license. I also don't want to get the 890 lowering kit for this because I want as much clearance as I can get away with. The roads here in Outback Australia is rough, so I want the clearance.
Both bikes are indeed pretty high from the ground but even with my 176cm I find them hard to control in some situations. Especially offroad when I would love to have both feet flat on the ground. You should stand up at all times when offroading to be honest but still they are sometimes a bit harder to handle for me. The Himalayan was much easier on that part. My buddy Bob and myself find the Norden Expedition extremely high of the ground , not only is the seat high but it also has a very wide seat and that makes it even higher. If you are not the biggest and really want to do some more extremer offroad I would still go for the 390 adventure r 😁
@@LifeofSmokey Thank you so much for the prompt feedback/advice! I will make sure to keep these in mind when I am considering the Norden! Good luck and be safe out there!
The difference in weight is very noticable when riding offroad and when dropping the bike lol. When both bikes get rolling they both feel very light and the power on the 1290 is just soooo much fun to have. For me the Norden feels like a moped next to the 1290. When I need a bike I would do 80% offroad with I would take the Norden fore sure. But it lacks crazy power for me on the road :-)
Sat on both in show rooms. Actually, the non Expedition.I was really disappointed with the Norden peg position. They are too far back with toes pointing to the ground as if on a crotch rocket. What were they thinking. 890 R is not like that or Desert X or Africa Twin.
In America this video does not matter because you can no longer buy the Norden 901 Expedition. It was sold out almost immediately so it's a moot point for us.
The 1290R vs Norden offroad? Is there a big difference? I currently own a 1290R 21' and thinking about switching to a 890R or the Norden...🤔 But i do love the power and the torque of the 1290😘🤪
When stepping back onto an 890 or Norden it feels like you are riding a moped with no torque 😂. But when doing lots of offroad and trails the 1290 is way harder to handle as the other ones for sure! I do like a challenge so keeping the 1290 😅
Hey smokey, good video mate. For me I really like the look of the Ducati over the Norden, and the name Norden what's that about ? the WP suspension is good and all those extras thrown in too. For me my GS adventure is still king because it does it all very well. keep safe buddy
In my opinion only, the Ducati is a sheep in wolf's clothing (all the looks, wothout the substance) and the Norden is for those that want a very purposeful, well equipped, comfortable tourer that will handle some off road. For those that aren't worried about dealership back up, ktm / norden is for you as they really aren't too bothered about your gripes. Good day.

“It’s blue” 😂
You don't buy a ducati "for the best buy".
Hey, how would you compare the Expedition to the 1290sar? On Paper, its Not a big difference in weight anymore 🤔
Thanks
Big price difference in both fully loaded
With ABS are the front and rear brakes interlinked when using the brakes ?
I don't think so as you need to be able to turn the rear abs off when riding offroad 😊
no ty my fully loaded t7 with evrything on it is 520 lb full gas and all the camping gear bars and stuff and it will run forever lol
Norden is a Scandinavian word for the North 😁. The bike was tested on those roads as far as I'm been told 😂
Norden is a Scandnavian word for "The Nordics"(Norway,Seden, Denmark,Finland and Island)
I think you changed shirts 6 times.
Good day.
Dude, enjoyable review as always! If possible, could you review the standard AT and make a comparison video of the rivals... 890s, the two beauties here and tiger900rally?!!??
Thanks anyway, u rock!
@Honda is not giving me any motorcycles to ride haha. Have to contact a dealer and take one out lol
J.Juan is a brand of Brembo… so in reality both have Brembo breaks
Thank you! Did some research and Brembo bought J.Juan in 2021 it seems right?
🇬🇭 waiting
7x gotta take the ducati.
I just baught an expedition
Wtf, in NL the Norden is 20k… that’s a big difference
X 23 shirt changes😅
