Dr Fung, can you teach us about water weight gain? I water fasted and went from 148 to 128 but gained back all the water weight. I was 120lbs since 12 to 25. But since then I started gaining all water weight, looks like it isnt fat gain but all water. Can you please teach us on this topic? Thankful for knowing you. Best wishes. Thank you ❤

I was 495lbs and couldn't lose weight despite strict adherence to what my doctor was telling me to eat... I went on an Ultra-Low carb diet with high (good) fats for satiation and I dropped all the weight like magic. As time went on I became never hungry so I didn't eat unless I was hungry. Sometimes this would be eating every other day. Fast forward 7 years and the weight is still gone and none of the health problems I had from that weight have returned. At first the weight fell off like crazy, but then after the first month it slowed but continued gradually until it was all gone.

Calorie counting is such a damaging lie, we've all been brought up on.

I remember seeing Dr Fung, as a young nephrologist, talk at a conference in Canada in 2011 or 2012 about diabetes management and obesity. I remember thinking, wow, this guy is on to something. It was very exciting looking at what and how we were eating and how it influenced our blood glucose and weight. He had such a novel way of looking at things. Great work Dr Fung. Doing OMAD 23/1... losing on average .74 lbs a day... amazing... Not spiking insulin but 1x per day is my goal... I like structured eating... mindless eating, small amounts, throughout the day was constantly spiking my insulin... once I became mindful of what I was doing and only ate once a day the weight just started dropping off... it is something I can do for the rest of my life... No one needs to graze all day long, we are not cows.

I landed on extending from 1 hour to 3 for a few days... then on the 3rd of Sept, I ate whenever I felt like it up until midnight on the 4th of September...
I have been fasting, water only, for 2 days... when I woke up today on the 6th, I finally broke the plateau... down 2lbs from where I was stuck at for 2 weeks... hopefully it continues... I'm going to Continue to fast all day today as well because I want 72-80 (depending on when it kicked in) hours of autophagy.... and I am absolutely not hungry.
I'll probably drink liquid broth in the morning followed by a green drink... my plan is to do the next 2 days liquids before adding any solids back in... hopefully that does it and gets me back on track!
One thing I noticed ithis time, I'm not as weak or lightheaded as I have been... I was trying everything like adding electrolytes when I ate, taking pinches of salt with water... but I became extremely weak.

HOWEVER when we get to the point of hormones being responsible for BodyFat thermostat, should we focus only on food pattern and insulin?
it seems to me there is a major emphasis on insulin, and carbs but not so much on cortisol, t3 t4, stress etc..
not everyone struggling with weight/fat loss craves carbs or have high insulin
i really hope Dr Fung will dive more into these situation and how to reset the BMR after chronic calories restriction when high carbs are not the issue

I have followed you for over 4 years and lost an incredible 100 pounds, down to within my green zone doing low carb, IF with many longer fasts, the longest being 7 days.
But (always a but) I have gained 15 of that back and no matter what I do, I can't lose it. It's been a year and half and I've been doing the same things that gave me the initial success. My question is: Will there be a video on how to reset the body fat temperature to a lower figure? I'm thinking this is my problem. My body is totally satisfied with the extra 15 and is not going to budge until I figure out the next step. I would love some more information on the body fat thermostat and how to get it to go downward. Thanks so much for all you do! :)

You need to do a longer fast to reset the metabolism, I’ve had to do the same when I stall. I’m currently on day 6 of a fast I’m pretty sure is going to last at least 21 days but more likely will go 30 or more. The last really long fast I did was a few years ago but that went for longer and reset my metabolism beautifully; the disruption happened due to a four month extreme stress period (cortisol) that increased my weight and wouldn’t let me shed it again. Hence, another longer fast is the remedy.

Fabulous information, as usual. Could you do one specifically on sympathetic tone and non-medication interventions to reset the fat thermostat? I've lost a lot of weight via prolonged fasting, and by doing another 5 day water fast periodically I have managed to stay at a pretty constant level, but my body clearly thinks I need to be at one weight and my doctors say another (5'9" middle-aged female body: it wants to sit at 160lbs, with muscle, while the medical community says it should be at 145lbs with muscle). I've been staying at this plateau now for over two years, having dropped about 50 pounds the year before that. What can I do to re-educate my body's fat thermostat?

That first study is interesting because it confirms some other research I came across maybe ten years ago. This particular researcher interviewed as many of The Biggest Loser participants from one particular season a few years later. Can't recall how many. He found that most of them had regained the weight and even more. The ones who had kept the weight off WERE EATING 800 KCALS/DAY LESS THAT WHAT WAS THEORETICAL!
Confirmed in my own observations recording everything I eat during weight loss phases. Now in my fourth one since 2009. My original maximum weight was 280 pounds, 6'2", I was age 63. Got down to 210 pounds over a year and a half. Bounced up, never as bad three times, and even weighed in lower a couple of times. I'm at 230 pounds currently, coming off at the rate of about 7 pounds a month w/o intentional exercise. My daily activities do have me walking over two miles a day.
In theory I should be able to sit on the sofa watching TV and be weight stable with 2200 kcals/day. Ha! Anything approaching 2000 and I gain weight.
    Sigh....

Hormones that increase the thermostat- insulin and cortisol. (also try to get better sleep? Avoid certain foods and eating patterns that can raise insulin
Hormones that decrease thermostat (sympathetic nervous system tone, GLP1 GIP etc…)
Hormonal effects of foods that eat. Eat early vs late. More carbs vs less. Fasting interval, Timing of meals, vinegar with meals vs naked carbs. Carbs later in meal vs later in meal, all affects the hormones. Which affects weight gain or loss.
Focus on calories will be focusing in way that wont help sustainable weight loss if it doesn’t focus on hormonal effects

I also stay satisfied for long so I naturally do OMAD most days. I checked my fasting insulin and it is below 2 now with a hba1c of 4,5. this really works guys! Plus I do not have sugar/carb addiction anymore (so freeing) and my autoimmune issues improved. I do understand that for some the carnivore seems to be too extreme but it shows that this thermostat theory can really be applied in practice for a long term healthy weight without inner fights but just food enjoyment. 😇

Hi there, here is my personal experience:, I lost 45-50 pounds and now have my dream figure: I switched to a almost zero carb diet (carnivore diet) and the first time in 35 years I can eat delicious food until I am full and still be slender. 😇

Hi Olivia, I was going to suggest almost the same thing as the first person who responded. If you can try a couple 24-hour water only fasts and eventually build up to about a 72-hour water only fat (electrolyte supplementation is ok during this) about once per month, you will see the fat burning increase. Good luck and keep up with the very low carbohydrate diet.

He addressed how we can't get more keto, we can't get more carnivore, more Mediterranean, but you can always extend your fast. You may be keto you may be even close to zero carbs but if you don't fast enough the plateau just continues. I noticed when I was sitting still or fluctuating at a weight for a week to two weeks I'd do a prolonged fast and bam my weight starts going back down. I started at 185lbs. I've lost ten pounds the last three months, down to 146.6lbs today. I got about 26 pounds more to go. I'm in the overweight category and want to be back at my healthy BMI=under 130lbs. I consistently do 1-2-3 day fasts back to back. I don't eat more than one meal a day and that can include snacks which I fight with vinegar water and coffee or hot tea.

    • @dwainosborne
      @dwainosborne 3 месяца назад +5

If you lose weight, it will cost your body less energy to carry you around, may be easier to pump blood, hormones around etc. Also if they lost weight through the eat less, move more approach they may still be eating too much carb/eating frequently causing insulin to remain higher in which case the body would lower BMR because it is struggling to access stored body fat due to insulin levels. Not sure if I answered the question you were asking? I have lost 70lbs so far (another 70lbs to go) using Dr Fung's methods, reversed my T2D and I am currently 5 days into a water fast and feel so energetic that I'm sure my energy expenditure is higher than before I lost weight

    • @dwainosborne

@@Edisee007At first I would do 2 or 3 days of keto so I was in full ketosis before I start the extended fast but now I am so used to fasting I can just go straight from a standard diet to a water fast without easing into it. I also use electrolyte powder in my water to avoid the 'keto flu' that comes from keto/fasting. That alone is mandatory to me as otherwise it can take a few days to a couple weeks to feel good again. That possibly could be one reason your wife didn't feel good during the initial phase? Lastly I'd say you need to plan what you will eat and how much of it when you break your fast so you don't go overboard (like going shopping on an empty stomach), especially with carbs because you have mental hunger and feel like you need to catch up. When you break your fast, eat a planned meal slowly and you should feel satisfied because your stomach shrinks during longer fasts.

So if hormones make your body fat thermostat go up causing you to gain weight. That means that water fasting, which obviously lowers insulin to a minimum, will make you loose weight during the water fast because of the lack of calories in combo with no insulin. And if after that fast you keep carbs away and do keto with OMAD which also keeps hormones low, doesn't this mean you should be able to keep the weight off?

I just came out of hospital as a result of a gut bleed. The doctors don't know what happened. But I suspect it was because I was on antibiotics whilst 'fasting'. The antibiotics killed the infection so fast that it was dead in less the 24 hours, but I was told to complete the course despite it causing me dioreah. I was taken inulin so I stopped that just in case that was causing an issue, but I thing my gut biome ate the surface off of my gut wall instead. Either learned the lesson for next time. Go a virus or got dioreah stop fasting immediately.
The thing that Pd me off was the Doctors insisting that I eat carbohydrate at every meal because of the risk of refeeding syndrome, when everything I have read suggests refeeding syndrome is a result of a carb based diet.
Which given I have T2DM seemed crazy. When I entered hospital my blood sugar was at tight controlled 6 to 7 range. When I left 10 days later I was at 23, with them insisting I take insulin, to correct the sugar levels in my blood that they had caused!! And I told them would happen.
The carbohydrates gave me my first sugar highs and crashes that I had in years pushing up my cortisol levels as well.
It was like being an ex-alcholic having drunk doctors insisting that I must have a beer or scotch with every meal whilst in hospital!! Because, drinking never harmed them!!!
And what a surprise 2 weeks later I am craving carbs & sugar. I can't wait to fast again to get rid of the craving.
But there really needs to be more research into why refeeding syndrome only happens in Humans. I think it's because we have switched so hard to carbohydrates in the last 100 years. And the mass use of Antibiotics hasn't helped by killing diversity in the gut biome.
I would love to talk to you more about this. Because, refeeding syndrome makes no sense whatsoever! Any species that died 4 days after finding more food is a species not long for this world!! Yet theoretically that's what refeeding syndrome does to us.
Personally, I believe we are an amphibious scavenger species, giving birth in water, living off sea vegetables, fresh seashore creatures and scavengend month old meat & bones. Or rather that's what we like to eat given the choice.

4:57 So just to be clear. Does this graph mean that even if I fast for 6 weeks, I will gain back the weight I lost during that period? Even if I stick to Keto in combo with OMAD? I mean I did a 1 week fast 2 years ago, I gained back the 3kg I had lost in that week but I always thought that was all water that I had lost, not actual fat. And for a while now I've been thinking to do a fast of 6 weeks to get from 74kg to 65kg or lower by not eating anything and drinking just water. However, I know that even if I manage to do that, if I gain back the weight I lost, I'm sure I'll be depressed for months and I want to avoid that. So I'd really like to know if that's actually what you're saying? I would understand the weight coming back if you eat garbage but if you do keto and OMAD too???

      It’s not that hard:
The two key things that make a huge difference are fasting and diet. Exercise can make a difference, too, but it is absolutely not needed initially if you have a hard time with it or just don’t want to do it.
So, within the framework of fasting and diet, you have several different options. Start with what interests you the most and what you think will be the easiest to get started. That way, it will be easy to keep going. Some people have continued to eat exactly the way they do now and just shortened their eating window, while eating only in distinct meals, no snacks. This is a great approach if you have a hard time giving up certain foods. You can eat in an 8-10 hour window three meals no snacks and then get used to that. Then you shorten your eating window, so you’re only eating two meals per day, while also lowering the number of carbs you eat.
Other people like to jump in right away or have serious medical conditions that help them stay motivated. While you do have to be careful here if you’re on certain meds, you can jump right in and lower your carb intake to 20 g or less and stick to an eating window. Focus on not eating added sugar, processed food, grains, and seed oils. Focus on eating fatty red meat and green vegetables. Think fatty ground beef or a nice ribeye with a big salad.
Then others jump in and do extended fasting while changing their eating not at all or a little bit at first. This is a harder approach, because extended fasting can be difficult if you’ve never fasted before and are still a sugar burner.
Experiment a little and see what works for you. Can you shorten your eating window right away and eat in distinct meals with no snacks pretty easily? Then do that. How about eating protein, fat, and green veggies first, then eating any carbs you like as a kind of dessert? Then do that, too. And go on from there, eliminate some of the carbs, shorten your eating window even more, or try to skip a day eating, if that intrigues you.

Carbs increase insulin, and insulin tells the body to store fat. He teaches a hormone based approach to weight management, whereas low fat tends to be part of the oversimplified (and ineffective) “low calories” approach that has been taught to us for decades. Fats and protein do not result in the same insulin spikes as refined carbohydrates, and naturally leave people more satiated.

After losing all the weight then how do i maintain weight? Another thing is , is it healthy to have a extremely low fat %? Please I would like to know if someone can explain

    • @patrickh709

Nothing "extreme" is ever good. If you eat a proper human diet such as keto or carnivore, you don't ever have to be concerned about your bodyfat %. Your body will self-regulate on a proper human diet.

Pay attention to what you are feeling when you crave crabs. There is a good chance that the carbs could be a way to trigger your reward center and avoid feeling whatever you are feeling in the moment. Boredom is one of my biggest struggles.

      Water, are you getting enough?

@kpeggs82 I have found water to make fasting harder and less productive. Dry fasting (and lots of red meat & eggs) works great for me. #carnivorewisdom
