  • Why intermittent Fasting is a simple solution for weight loss. Body fat is simply a method of storing food energy. When we eat, our body wants to store those calories. When we don't eat (intermittent fasting), our body uses those calories. So, if we want to lose body fat, increase the duration of time that we are not eating. Check out my blog at / drjasonfung

    The thing I love most about fasting is that it frees up SO MUCH TIME during my day. When I fast, I am not spending any time shopping or cooking food. I can do other things to get out of the house or distract myself from thoughts about food. Unlike calorie counting, which essentially makes me obsessed with thoughts about food, meal planning, and looking up everything I eat on some app to figure out calories. Fasting is definitely the way to go!

    • @joannathesinger770
      @joannathesinger770 2 года назад +25

      @@violetwade6528 Apparently you're behind the information curve regarding Intermittent Fasting. You aren't "saving up calories to eat later"...you are not eating for a specific period of time, then eating within a specific window in order to keep your insulin as low as possible during your fasting window. It's ONLY when insulin is low that your body can access its fat stores and utilize them for energy. You can have whatever you'd like to eat within your eating window...but the hormones ghrelin and leptin prevent you from binging during your eating window.
      When you Intermittent Fast, you engage all sorts of healthy behaviors AND can reverse Type 2 diabetes which is epidemic in our society today.

    crazy story. my dad lost his drivers license 10 Or so years ago because of the diabetes and it wasn't safe for him to drive. he basically pulled a cartman. about 2 years ago at the age of 88 he had quit eating and his alzheimers was reaching a terrible point. we thought he was getting ready to die.
    this spring his doctor declared him cured of diabetes. he is 90 now
    so this week I discovered this lecture series and it answered some things we didn't understand.
    1. 10 years ago he weighed 230lb, he now weighs under 180lb but he has zero sagging skin.
    2. he cured his diabetes
    3. his alzheimers is A typical. he still recognizes us all. he seems to remember the past the best but he can still carry on a conversation, and other things,
    4. the last check on his heart disease found an unusually healthy heart.
    thanks for sharing this, I'm looking forward to greatly increasing his fat intake to see if we can bring him back a bit.
    I myself have started intermittent fast with a keto diet to fix my own diabetes.

    I did the fasting without knowing that I was doing it. The reason was I was under stress and all I did was slept, went to work and I had no appetite. I ate only once a day. in 2 months I lost 30lb. But once I was stress free I still kept the weight off because I didn't like to eat as much. I had no health problem and I was able to exercise and much more. before I couldn't walk a mile. I would have rather done it Dr Jason way.

As a doctor who also struggled with weight and metabolic syndrome, I would usually tell my patients that you can’t cure hypertension or diabetes easily or even at all; but after reading his book, I realized a lot of the teachings were based on convenience, commerce and a culture that sustains pharmaceutical companies, not the actual science. I reversed high blood pressure and worsening obesity without any drugs and achieved a high HDL (good) cholesterol for the first time in a decade. Dear Dr. Fung. I've studied your work for about a year and a half before I self-experimented on water fasting. I started with a few short; 3, 5, and 7 day water fast, before going for my ultimate goal, of a 40 day water fast. I thought it would be interesting, to check my blood glucose, twice per day and my blood keytones once per day. I was shocked by my results. My blood glucose never went higher than 96 and no lower than 64 on my blood glucose meter. My blood ketone went as high as 7.4 and simply went back and forth, not going lower than 4.0. Sadly, I only was able to make it to the 36th day of my water fast, due to the most extreme nausea I've ever had in my 51 years of my life, due to contracting COVID-19 from a family member. I broke my water fast with some chicken bone broth. I ended up being hospitalized from COVID-19
    Not once was I hungry after the 7th day without food. I lost 48 pounds in the 36 day water fast, and I know, with 100% certainty, I would have gone the remaining 4 days, to fulfill my water fast goal of 40 days, had I not gotten extremely ill. I know water fasting works! Thank you Dr. Fung!

    God bless Dr. Fung. I have had Type 2 diabetes for about 10 years. Was up to 3 different oral meds and my blood sugar kept going up over time. I've been fasting and eliminating sugar/carbs for a little over a month and i've lost weight and my blood sugar has gone way down. I have stopped taking glipizide and Januvia and am now only on Metformin. My morning blood sugar is consistently under 100. Simply amazing My sugars are better than anytime in the last 10 years.

      Keep consistently doing intermittent fasting and keeping your carbs low and very soon you can say 'bye-bye' to metformin as well!! Drugs should only be used as a last ditch effort, when Nothing else will work. Or for a very short period, until your own health-building nutritional lifestyle has a chance to heal your body on its own!😉

    I counted calories for a year.. I couldn’t raise my caloric intake cuz I would gain the weight back. So I was stuck eating low calories and not losing weight just maintaining. Then i heard about the benefit of intermittent fasting and started right away. I stopped counting calories and I lost 2lbs within 4 days… I still can’t believe it!

    Very Good Dr. Fung. I am in chapter 3 of "The Obesity Code", so far very insightful. I wish I had this knowledge 20 years ago. My mother may still be alive, and I would maybe have a more productive life, physically. I have been doing intermittent fasting now for 2 weeks. Everyone thinks I am nuts, but I feel better, I'm losing weight, and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. And that light is, reaching my weight goal, being healthy, and never taking Type 2 Diabetic meds ever again. Thanks!!!!

      @oneofseven777, I feel exactly the same! My main goal is to reverse my t2D; a) to not take meds for the rest of my life (however long that would have been had I continued down the Metformin/Insulin path)? Incidentally, I was terrible abt taking, which turns out may have been good a thing. And b) associated costs, etc. Added bonus, the wt loss. My Dr actually prescribed me to do the Keto Diet the day I was diagnosed. My have also saved me strictly by accident?! Anyway, I have the same feelings as you. And when I mention this anyone, all very skeptical...and I'm a medical professional! Thank God for Dr. Fung!

    The #1 thing is planned and structured diet, because the only way for your body to burn fat is to use it as energy. Basically, you need to eat below your energy maintenance level (in terms of calories) and your fat cells will be used to compensate the missing energy (calories). That's how your body works. There are other things to consider as well, such as hormonal status, diseases... but caloric deficit is a must. You have a lot of online diet planners and calculators, like dietarize or even proleveldiet. Losing weight is just a simple math, really...

    • @Kyarrix
      @Kyarrix 2 года назад +15

      Losing weight is not simple math. Dr Fung explained this at about 17 minutes in. If it were as simple as operate in a caloric deficit, nobody would be heavy.
      What we eat and when we eat matters, a calorie isn't a calorie and reducing calories in, if you cannot access your body fat will not result in weight loss, it will result in your body burning fewer and fewer calories.
      This was the point of the video. The simple math you're talking about doesn't work. That isn't how our bodies function. If your insulin level is high because you are eating the wrong things or eating too often, your body will not be able to access fat to use it for energy. You won't be able to burn fat. If you're eating every few hours you're going to be fighting your body. If you force it by dropping calories so low that you do start losing weight, as soon as you eat you'll gain it back. The people on the biggest loser and anyone else who has done this knows. If they want to keep that weight off they will be hungrier and burn fewer calories. Their ghrelin will be higher and their metabolic rate lower. They will be fighting their body's efforts to return to set point.
      The number one thing is to get your insulin level lower and keep it lower consistently. Your body can only use fat to compensate for missing energy if your insulin level is low enough for your body to access fat stores. That is how your body works. You can force a temporary weight loss your way and you'll gain it back. 99.3% of people who lose weight using the "it's simple math" method gain the weight back and then are blamed for not following their diet. There is no acknowledgment that they are actually hungrier, that they have slowed their metabolic rate and that they are trying to force their body to do something body has evolved to resist. You can only exist in a state of semi starvation, feeling cold and tired and miserable for so long until you give in to what your body is prompting you to do. Then because you burn fewer calories than others, you gain weight.
      Of course you have to eat a healthy diet. A healthy diet means real food. It doesn't mean being perpetually hungry, it doesn't mean figuring out what your caloric deficit is because counting calories has never worked. Eat once or twice a day, don't snack, try to avoid eating a lot of processed foods. Eat a reasonable amount of good protein and a lot of healthy fat. Healthy fats are not the ones you've probably been taught to eat. Avoid over-processed seed oils such as corn, soybean and canola, get enough omega-3s to balance the abundance of omega-6 in our diet. Eat full-fat yogurt (ideally unsweetened or if you have to drizzle a scant teaspoon of maple syrup or honey on it) butter, avocado, eggs and meat (meat is its own ethical issue but that is a separate discussion. I haven't resolved that for myself yet). As you eat less carbohydrates and more fat, your body will have an easier time using fat for fuel. You'll find that when you eat a lot of carbohydrates you are hungrier more quickly than if you had eaten protein and fat to satiety.
      All of this is explained in this and other lectures. Dr Fung has a series of six videos on this topic. You can find them by looking up The Obesity Code lectures on RUclips. The first one is The Obesity Code Lecture (Why do we get fat?) Part 1.
      You might also look into his work on reversing type II diabetes and why conventional advice has failed people. He's a nephrologist, this is his area and what got him interested in it in the first place. He had been giving people insulin and watching them get fatter and sicker. Now he helps people reverse their diabetes and get healthy and off medication.
